I'm finally getting around to editing my fanfic for actual publishing. Any warnings for Kindle Direct Publishing?
Aside from, you know, "It's Amazon and they'll fuck you out of every penny they can on principle," I can't really speak to it -- I've never used Kindle Direct. My only real experience with pub/sales through Amazon is the fact that when I allowed them to sell my books via Lulu, they artificially inflated my prices because they take such a massive cut of your profits. I have a little more discussion of how that works at this post (look for the paragraph just after "wait, what?").
Now, that said, Amazon is a much, much larger platform for your work than Lulu and unless you are marketing from a platform where you already have a readership (like my blog) then Amazon will probably get more eyeballs on your work. Especially if you are marketing primarily to people who aren't familiar with you, they'd much rather buy from somewhere known, like Kindle, than from a random website they've never encountered like Lulu.
You might peruse @thebibliosphere for more useful information than I can give -- Joy has a lot more experience with Amazon's various fuckeries and has spoken to them pretty extensively. I don't know what the tag is offhand but Joy's tumblr is fun reading anyway, so if you browse around you will also get entertained :D
Readers, if you have info to share, please feel free! Remember to comment or reblog, as I don't repost asks sent in response to other asks.

If you haven't seen it yet, Amazon is stopping returns of ebooks that are more than 10% read thanks to the pushback. (Statement about it is linked on the Society of Authors twitter) Thanks for being willing to discuss money in the book industry and the ways Amazon finds to screw over authors.
I just saw it via the Author鈥檚 Guild! This is such good news!

Where should I put my stories?
heya fellow writers on Tumblr, I got a semi serious question, or at least it feels semi serious at the moment. I'm making a lot of progress with this short story and I was wondering where I'm supposed to put it?
I know I could try self-publishing it, but that requires people caring enough to pay for it
I could enter it into a contest, but that requires it to be small enough, and I don't want to constrain myself
I could put it in Wattpad, but I know they're very heavenly romance and fan fiction which this isn't
Same applies to AO3, which I know a lot of people on Tumblr like
I could try just putting it straight in Tumblr, but that didn't work last time
I could record an audio book of it and put it on YouTube, but I don't have the money for recording and such
I could do maybe something else?
Just kinda need a little bit of help

Ok, genuinely, Ama*on wtf are you doing? My pages are the exact size you require for comics. The last time I submitted (the third time) you told me my images were overlapping the cut lines and said nothing about the page sizes. I鈥檝e been trying to get the hard copy print of the third book submitted properly for three months now and it鈥檚 been nonstop errors and messages like this that aren鈥檛???? A real problem?? You literally sent me a proof copy that was fine??? Did they just change the page sizes in the last few weeks? Am I loosing my mind???????????????*
*yes.

THE BLOOD SERIES
Everyone knows that Werewolves and Vampires are blood enemies, everyone that is except Rory Dungarven, a Werewolf, and his beloved adopted daughter Angelique, a Vampire with extraordinary powers like no other Vampire before her. This series follows the rise of each character, detailing along the way the true origin of both species. It chronicles the challenges each face, both separately and together, as they become the most legendary immortals of their kind. This series also reveals the still very human desire of immortals to love and be loved by another. Moments of tenderness and desire draw you into the secret places of the heart where love burns more hotly than even the thirst for blood. Along the way, this series reveals the existence of other mythological and supernatural creatures. Some become valued allies to the Dungarvens, while still others watch and wait. Their immortality is challenged over and over by other preternatural beings that threaten their right to exist. This, even as they strive to unite the two species, and end a war that has secretly raged in the shadows of human society for longer than any can remember.

The brain does silly things sometimes.
I thought I would be self-publishing a collection of poems called Writer's Block about, you guessed it, writer's block.
But then my brain did a thing today and THIS was the result:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So. Coming soon... I guess? Maybe?
Oh, and does anyone have any suggestions for self-publishing poetry collections? I did Amazon once for fiction and was less than impressed. Now I'm thinking IngramSpark but I'm *scared.*
Thoughts, anyone?

I cannot believe this is real.
All of the jobs I have had, where I wrote on receipt papers just to keep up with writing, all of it came down to this moment. There has been so many stories born and bred from where I have been so far. Inspiration is never just in one place; it is everywhere if you look hard enough. Whether the market, a restaurant, a gas station, or an office. There is never one path to the destination, but many, many roads that get you there.
Thank you to everyone who came along this journey with me. 馃寵

Hello, wonderful human being! <3
I recently found your book (well, like a few seconds ago because of the last ask you answered), and I wanted to ask if you get a good share when buying your paperback edition on Amazon? And if not, is there another website where I can buy it? Just wanted to ask first before getting it because I want to support you as best as possible with it! <3
All the love to you <3 and btw, the summary had me hooked within a second 馃憖
Oh hello! I am so happy liked that summary and are interested in reading my book.
An interesting question! I always push the fact you can read my book on Kindle Unlimited (which is always running a sign up deal if you aren't already signed up) and then ya know if you really like me/my book, you can buy the paperback as a trophy (this is what I do lol).
Tumblr media
But some transparency! I'll but this below the cut, but you can see what rates I get from Amazon on each format, and what I made in October as a new author who only promotes their book through crazy tiktoks.
I actually had to look this up because I couldn't remember (and I should probably make a note of this), but let's not focus on my disorganization today.
When you buy my book as an eBook for your kindle, I make 拢1.58/$1.90 (ignore the 70% I am not enrolled in that option).
Tumblr media
When you buy my book as a paperback, I get 拢2.52/$3.07 (wide just means you can find me on like the B&N website I actually don't know who much or little or whether I get sales from those wide/expanded outlets). But the big thing to point out here is that Amazon has a minimum I must set my books to so the pricing here is less my choice.
Tumblr media
If you are like me, you only read on your phone and really only read Kindle Unlimited books because you are cheap trying to support indie/new authors more, but are be sensible with your budget before you buy a paperback for you trophy shelf.
When you read my book on KU cover to cover (400 pages) I make about 拢1.50. This number a bit of an estimation because I won't really know until the months end what I will make on KU because it is based on page reads.
So I guess what I am trying to say is that if you are on KU, read my book there. Because if you don't like it, you can return in and I still get paid for the pages you do read. Where as, if you buy the eBook or Paperback, decide you don't like it and return it, I get the full retail price taken from my royalties that month, which could mean I have to pay Amazon money.
This is my October Royalties breakdown. You can see I made .99 from print sales (which means I got some wide sales!), and the rest from KU page reads.

Hey Joy! I hope you're doing alright and your spoons have started to recover from your last migraine
if you have extra spoons or just want to open it up to your community, I have questions about erotica and amazon.
Is there any content that amazon nukes that isn't implicitly part of it's TOS or written rules? For examples I guess:
Knots in erotica (were-anything, dragons, etc.) I heard from a friend that they don't allow this so they're trying to work around this by calling it everything but a knot.
How 'steamy' is too steamy? I know for non hetero they gloss over a lot of them but I guess what keywords did you have to avoid to not be shadow banned on their algorithm
I read up a little on what kinds of cover pictures were acceptable and that's just, weird but I guess color blocks and silhouettes are all in right now (It's erotica, why not have somebody in a questionable pose?!?)
And I guess this final question is a little outside what your book series did, but non humanoid love interests (more akin to Shape of Water and other love interests that look less like humans). What does Amazon expect the writers to avoid (aside from writing them in general) and what goods ways are there to put tags, the blurb, etc?!
Thank you Joy, and community, you rock!
So, for the most part, provided you stick to the TOS with Amazon, you're fine. However, the Amazon censors are human and have their own biases you have to contend with. Amazon also recently purged their dark romance category, which was an actual thing, presumably in an attempt to look squeaky clean despite romance and erotica being the backbone upon which KDP is built. Yay, sanitized capitalism...
I'm not aware of 'knotting' being banned, though it probably depends on whether you're writing straight or queer erotica and which human you get on the other end of the screen when it comes to final approval. There's a well-known problem with a homophobic censor on the weekends (Fuck you, Carlos, 馃枙) who seemingly tends to knock back LGBTQ+ content on a whim. Hilariously, he knocked back the Fluff version of Hunger Pangs the first time I submitted it for approval. I didn't make any changes to the file and reuploaded it on Monday. Problem solved. (This also happened to Chuck Tingle about a year ago, though I can't seem to find the thread atm.)
When it comes to het-content, you can start the book with dubcon, and likely, nothing will happen. Queer content, you will want to give yourself a longer build-up to avoid getting knocked back. I've heard that censors stop reading after 20% but don't quote me on that. Putting certain content after that mark may be a way to avoid getting certain things picked up. When it comes to the algorithm, don't tag it like fic. Things like Shifter Romance, Monster Romance, and Gay Romance are acceptable (or whatever category you are in), but DO NOT tag it the way you would fic. A list like gay, shifter, knotting, BDSM, kink, tentacles--whatever-- is not how the Amazon algorithm works. Avoid putting trigger/content warnings anywhere inside the book as well. If you want a comprehensive list of content tags for your readers, you'll need to do what I did and have a specific page on your website listed at the front of your book, but you'll also want to keep that page inactive on your website until the book gets approved. These are the hoops we jump through to let our readers make informed choices... Also, don't tag it as queer anywhere. You can't even use 'queer' in reviews on Amazon anymore. 馃檭
The reason you're currently seeing the trend of vector art and whatnot is twofold: one, it's cheaper than hiring models or paying for certain licensed content. Secondly, it's to avoid being flagged as erotic because we live in the bad place where everything must be sanitized for advertisers. You'll still see the odd headless hot-abbed torso, but it's safer to have non-explicit content on the cover. If you want a good example of how to code something as erotic without using explicit images, take a look at Katee Robert's covers. They tend to have a symbolic image framed in the middle surrounded by darkness with very vibrant colors--usually an electric purple, red or green.
In terms of content, in theory, as long as you are sticking to the TOS, you're fine. As for tagging, I sort of already answered this with how to tag via website links, but as for how to write blurbs, you're going to want to phrase it as something hintingly vague. For example: After an accident at work, Merissa finds herself plunged into an alternate fantasy dimension ruled over by the merfolk of Atlan'titsia. Captured, she is brought before the mysterious Prince SexyMonster, who claims her for himself. Bound and displayed as an oddity in his court, she is torn between her desire to return home and to learn more about this strange new place where desire rules supreme, and the rules are not at all what she expects... Or something to that effect. Don't ask me. I'm rubbish at blurbs, lmao.
Anyway, it's been a minute since I contended with Amazon's uploads, and some of this may have changed. If it has, I'd be curious to know what has changed. I hope some of that helps, though.
Also, before anyone starts ragging on Amazon for any of this, the TOS are pretty universal across the board. It's just more evident with Amazon because it's often the only place indies can afford to publish.

Serious question for Indy Authors.
I am wondering if, even though I originally published Year One of the Blog via Amazon... can I take it down and republish through Ingram Spark?
I am doing my own research, but anyone who has experience with the process, can you help me out?
I really want to do some formatting to Year One while working on Year Two and then publish the updated version.聽 I just don鈥檛 want to get in trouble legally.
