Some tf2 shenanigans . Some sillays
Original scene (it’s from the captain underpants Netflix show and it’s a funny series I promise): friendship separation anxiety
ATLA au ideas under cut
Pauling scout and medic are kind of the og team avatar. Found him on the far far outskirts of the northern water tribe. Heavy (an earth bender constantly utilising seismic sense) and Engineer (who comes from a long line of secret metalbenders) would basically serve as Toph and the replacement for both team Azula and Zuko would be soldier demo and sniper (soldier having refined expertise in fire jet propulsion trying to get back after exiled from the fire nation army, demo cursed by spirits to be a combustion bender trying to please his ma, sniper a former yuyan archer trying to earn back the fire lord’s good graces). Pyro is very obviously a fire bender who likes the spirits a bit too much. Spy’s scout’s father who spent the past 100 years in the spirit realm trying to find his wife. yeah I think that’s everyone

Use of colour in “The Siege of the North:pt2”
I really appreciate the stylistic choice of making everything turn to gray scale when the moon died.
I re-watched the episode and it emphasized the atmosphere of how unnatural and out of balance the world came after the moon’s death. Not to mention the use of limited colour to covey a narrative. Fire bending against the black and white illuminating intense expressions, Yue’s eyes being blue reminding the audience that a part of the moon spirit is with her.
Some of these things I didn’t think about before but it’s nice to notice now

I think it's important to mention that Mike and Bryan didn't plan anything beyond these concepts. That Bryke always decided and planned to end ATLA at Book 3 (since the initial draft of ATLA), even in The Search's notes Mike mentioned they had no idea what to do with Azula post-war so they followed on Gene Yang's ideas.
What post-ATLA content suffers from is that it's not planned. Even the comic writer Gene Yang revealed in an interview that they only thinking about finishing each comic book one by one and that nothing is set on stone. That made post-ATLA content badly paced and inconsistent, it even become hard for the fans to take it seriously however "official" it might be. Besides nothing mind blowing happened in these projects other than bringing Ursa back, but as a fully retconned, hollowed-out, butchered character.
Furthermore, Bryke left the live action project with Netflix owning rights to ATLA too and they established Avatar Studios probably in a rivalry against the latter.
So, it's such a mess because there are too many hands, too many projects, no plans. Meanwhile you can also say that Gene Yang's take pretty much created a rotten foundation for ATLA as a franchise post-war.

(ATLA) Earth Kingdom's northern jungle?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While working on the 'The Deserter' episode (ATLA 116), DiMartino y Konietzko had the idea of an Earth Kingdom town whose architecture had been modified by Fire Nation colonists―hence the contrasting roof style between the temple and its surrounding buildings. Jeong Jeong's camp was located deep within the wilds enclosing the colonial town, close to a shallow pond. For this forest, or jungle, the creators got inspiration from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899), so… is there ivory in this jungle? What's its name? If we translate Heart of Darkness into Chinese we get Hēixīn, which is similar to Hu Xin, one of the earliest Fire Nation conquest during the Hundred Years War. Are this jungle and the colonial town in the Hu Xin provinces? Could be. An isolated tribe lives in the jungle. Little is known about its people, as only the leader―Lin Yee―is named. DiMartino and Konietzko only said they're extremely isolated, having little contact with the outside world and no modern technology. They are masters in lancery and their clothes allow them to camouflage. The clothes appear to be made of dried yellow-green leaves and grass. They go barefoot, and wear bamboo hats called douli (斗笠) in China. If they were of Cambodian inspiration, the hat would be named do'un (ដួន). They have also made rudimentary wooden armor for combat. This tribe remind me of the Xiongnu, a mysterious confederation of nomadic steppe peoples who dominated central Asia for centuries. And since we don't know anything about Lin Yee and his tribe, this is the lore I give them: The Xin people are nomads from the northwest of the Earth Kingdom. They come from the northern steppes of the Taihua Mountains, but the rest of their history is a mystery. Their leader receives the title of Chanyu and for centuries the Earth Monarchs have tried to convert them into a tributary state, but they remain independent. Isolationists and with hardly any technology, they live in the northernmost jungle of the Earth Kingdom, a rainforest covered in wild, majestic and extensive shorelines, wetlands, rocky outcrops and glaciers. Guess this jungle could be inspired by the Chugach forest, which is America's northernmost greenwood. The headcanon name I'd give it would be Xin Wilds, I guess. I really, really love the complex and vast worldbuilding we can discover in 'The Last Airbender', 'The Legend of Korra' and Yee's book. I'll share mor little details and piece of worldbuilding soon!

Can't afford art school?
After seeing post like this 👇
Tumblr media
And this gem 👇
Tumblr media
As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.
Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.
📺Here is my list:
Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)
Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)
Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)
BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)
Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)
Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)
SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)
Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)
Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)
Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)
Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)
Pikat (art advice and critiques)
Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)
Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)
Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)
Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
Krita (Free)
mypaint (free)
FireAlpaca (free)
Libresprite (free, for pixel art)
Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)
IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.
"also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing"

Typography Tuesday
Last month, the Milwaukee Public Library's Arts & Media Department held its first Art Book Club session. Intended as an informal art book appreciation club that meets once a month in the Art, Music, and Recreation room, each session explores a different theme by looking at the wide variety of art materials in the collection. The collection is historical, non-circulating, and vast. I attended and spent an hour and a half mesmerized by the array of luscious materials presented.
There was design, architecture, fashion, and much more. As a type nerd, I was especially drawn to the several late 19th- and early 20th-century type specimen books on the tables. Here, for example, are some pages of chromatic initials by various European and American companies from Schriften Atlas, compiled by Ludwig Petzendorfer and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann in 1898.
MPL held its second Art Book Club session on the theme of "Animals" last night, but I missed it because I was conducting an evening instruction session. Dang! But I'll be attending future sessions when I can and I'll keep y'all apprised.

Blake Belladonna's Design
This is a quick appreciation of our Cat Girl's design. Its objective is to offer a short analysis by incorporating elements of other metas. Ideally, the end result will be something similar to Yang's post. Finally, this is the final piece of my mid-summer Blake meta spree :) So, enjoy!
Tumblr media
JUST ANOTHER CAT GIRL?
Blake's design plays with the idea of "cat girl". Cat girls are common in anime and mangas, but are often overly sexualized. In particular, cat ears are usually presented as an overly cute trait and sometimes a fetish.
RWBY takes this idea and subverts it in 2 ways.
Blake's ears are initially hidden, so that her affinity with cats gets highlighted through other aesthetical elements:
Gambol Shroud's ribbon resembles a cat's tail and it being a whip may reference the infamous cat o' nine tails
She decorates her eyes with cat eye makeup
She is able to make copies of herself, which get jokingly referred to as copycats
In Mistral she wears leg boots, which bring to mind Puss in Boots
In Atlas she wears a catsuit
Blake's cat trait becomes a core part of her identity, which is explored on a double level:
It represents her faunus heritage, which makes her different from humans and discriminated
It is a symbol of Blake's troubled past and of her involvement with the White Fang
So, Blake covers her cat ears to run from both society and herself. Just like a scaredy cat ;)
As you see, with some limitations and worldbuilding, Blake manages to be a cat girl with much depth to her. Still, there is more to her cat design.
FROM CALICO TO TUXEDO
Let's juxtapose Blake's initial concept art with her final design:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What changes is the cat used as the main inspiration.
In the initial concept art it is the calico cat (tricolor cat):
Tumblr media
In the final character design it is the tuxedo cat (bicolor cat):
Tumblr media
Why the change? Let's explain it by highlighting one similarity (1) and one difference (2) between the two kitties.
1- Both cats are called after a type of cloth:
Calico is a fabric, which originates in India (the set of the Jungle Book - Blake's secondary allusion) and is famous for its colorful printed patterns. I wouldn't be surprised if Blake's clothes in the concept art were meant to be calico made.
Tuxedo is a formal wear, which consists of a black suit over a white shirt and a bow tie. Well, Blake's final design is a revisitation of the traditional tuxedo with a shorter jacket and a bow worn in the hair, instead than as a tie.
The idea of "cloth" is heavily used in Blake's design, which may be one of the reasons why the tuxedo is eventually chosen. This kitty, thus, offers a pretty poignant metaphor.
It all starts with Gambol Shroud, where shroud means a piece of cloth that conceals or protects:
Tumblr media
Here come two thoughts:
Blake's bow is her shroud which is why it resembles her weapon’s ribbon (same color and similar material). The bow is the ears, while the ribbon is the tail. Together they complement Blake’s cat design.
Some tuxedo cats are called tuxedo masks because it is as if a black mask covers their whole faces. It is easy to see how this concept fits Blake, who conceals herself thanks to a little piece of fabric.
Basically, Blakes's bow is her tuxedo tie, which is worn as a mask.
2- The two cats differ when it comes to their color:
The calico is a tricolor cat, which is mostly known as having a white coat with some orange and black patches
The tuxedo is a bicolor cat, which has white and black fur
These two color patterns are another reason why Blake has been characterized as a tuxedo instead than a calico. As a matter of fact the black and white dychotomy fits our beautiful faunus girl more.
WHITE AND BLACK = BEAUTY AND BEAST
In old English, Blake's name means both black and white. As a result, she is linked to both colors, which tie with her light and shadow motif:
Tumblr media
Blake is associated to the twilight because it is where light and shadow meet. What's more, her musical theme is built on this duality. She starts in the shadows and climbs her way up towards the light.
Well, Light and Shadow are linked to two Jungian Archetypes:
The Light is the persona, so what is shown to others
The Shadow is what is repressed, so the hidden parts
And these two archetypes are explored in The Beauty and The Beast:
The Beauty is the light - she is beautiful, lovable and accepted
The Beast is the shadow - he is ferocious, scary and misunderstood
So, Blake's own allusion can be read as the integration of beauty and beast, light and shadow, so that a new unit (a new individual) is born. This is also Blake's arc in a nutshell. She starts as a shadow because she hides herself, but with time she steps into the light and shows the world who she is.
In other words, Blake's Beauty and Beast allusion is referenced in her appearence not only in her nature as a faunus, but in her color scheme too. She is both beauty and beast, light and shadow, white and black.
This is also why these two colors are incorporated in respectively Sun and Ilia.
Sun is white, as he leads Blake towards the light:
Tumblr media
Ilia is black, as she forces Blake to face her own shadows:
Tumblr media
Through them Blake integrates her shadows and stops hiding:
Tumblr media
This is why her design changes in Mistral in two notables ways:
She gives up her bow once and for all
She wears a white jacket over a black top
These two details mirror Blake's inner journey. She learns to show herself more, so her ears get to be out in the open and the light (white) surfaces. In Beacon, instead, the ears are concealed and Blake is wrapped in shadows (black).
Ironically, this means Blake's design loses the core traits of her tuxedo cat inspiration. As a matter of fact she has no bow tie anymore and the color pattern is inverted, which doesn't work. Why this choice? It is because Blake is going from Beast (black + cat) to Beauty (white + individual). Symbolically, this happens as she shows her faunus trait more openly:
Tumblr media
She grows more beautiful (human) as she openly embraces her beast side (cat).
GOLD, BLUE AND PURPLE = HOT, COLD AND JUST RIGHT
The shift from calico to tuxedo brings some consequences to Blake and Yang's complementary designs.
Let's compare the bees exploratory ideas:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As people have noticed, Blake and Yang are aesthetically and symbolically linked since early on.
Here, we have:
Blake with one gold eye and one blue eye
Yang with a blue bandana
This chromatic choice ties into Yang's allusion and design. As a matter of fact our Goldilocks uses colors to represent the too hot, too cold and just right. Specifically:
red/orange is the too hot
blue/green is the too cold
purple (blue + red) is the just right
So, in the picture above Yang's looks play with the dychotomy between too hot and too cold. This same duality is mirrored in Blake:
She is both too hot (gold eye) and too cold (blue eye)
She wears much gold in general (Yang's main color)
The idea is clear. Blake is Yang's hot and cold. In particular, she brings some needed blue in Yang's life. She helps Goldilocks cool down and become more balanced. Similarly, Blake proudly wears Yang's golden tones, as she has to grow more like her Golden Beauty.
So, how have these ideas evolved in Blake’s final design?
Blake has gained a strong association with purple, which makes her Yang's just right
Blake's color scheme has ditched gold in favor of silver, which makes her and Yang complementary
Blake's link to purple is interesting because this color calls back to her family and to the surname Belladonna (beautiful woman in Italian). In other words, it is connected to both Ghira's legacy and her Beauty side. So, it is not a surprise that Blake grows more purple in each arc:
Tumblr media
She is slowly blooming into Yang's just right by reconciling with her legacy and by becoming a person worthy of our golden girl.
This transformation is highlighted also by Blake integrating some gold into her:
Tumblr media
In both her Vale and Atlas's designs Blake is linked to silver, so that she can complete Yang's gold. Still, in Mistral she has some gold details because this is the arc where she integrates her missing parts. This integration ends with Adam's death and Blake's rebirth:
Tumblr media
So, Blake's design tells a story of inner growth, which leads her to stand beside Yang as an equal:
Blake: She's not protecting me, Adam. And I'm not protecting her. We're protecting each other.
This theme is important for Blake's Cat Girl archetype. Cat Girls, thus, are often reduced to love interests, but Blake's arc is a deconstruction of this idea. What would happen if the male partner of a Cat Girl is abusive? Blake explores this concept and tells a story of liberation and development, which ends with a reconstruction of the trope. Our Cat Girl ends up in a happy relationship, but not as a shallow prize. Rather as a winner.
BEASTS, LIONS AND WOLVES
In conclusion, Blake's design alludes to the Beauty and Beast on three levels:
Society= Blake is both human (beauty) and animal (beast)
Couple = Blake and Yang are drawn as complementary
Individual = Blake is both white (light) and black (shadow)
Still, this is not the only fairy tale our Cat Girl ties into thanks to her animal features. Here come three examples.
Blake is Bagheera's daughter and a small panther (a cat) in the Jungle Book
Blake is a Scaredy Cat to Lioneheart's Cowardly Lion. Except that of course the cat is braver than the lion
Blake is Ruby's black beast in team RWBY's LRRH team allusion
This last reference is foreshadowed since Red Like Roses:
Tumblr media
Black the beast descends from shadows.
After all, the Beowolves appear when Blake's line comes up.
Moreover, Blake's secondary allusions all come together to strongly link our Black Shadow to wolves. In the Jungle Book, Mowgli is raised by wolves, just like Blake grows up in the White Fang. The name of the group itself calls back to wolves, as it references the title of Jack London's book about a half-dog half-wolf, who fights to be accepted by humans.
Finally, it turns out Blake is not the only Cat, who turns out to be a Wolf:
Tumblr media
In short, Blake's design lets her freely move between allusions and references. Not only that, but it is crafted to add depth and thematic resonance to her character and her arc. Not bad for just another Cat Girl, uh?

Okay, this is starting to get silly
Tumblr media
First Zeisan, now this. Did Bryke send out some sort of mandate to all artists that all Fire Nation characters must dress like the Firelord?
Like idk who this is but it sure ain’t Hei Ran. You’re telling me this practical lady who is always down to fight is gonna be sweeping around in long flowing robes & flappy sleeves & a fucking tassel on her hairpin? That a character who has a rigid sense of honour & status is wearing 3 shoulder spikes (something only seen a very, very small number of people in the royal family & nobody else is shown wearing) & looking way fancier than the highest status person in her whole nation, especially during a tense political situation where there’s a dispute over the throne, complete with confirmation that the wannabe usurper flounces around in very Firelord-ish robes to flaunt his claim. Yeah, I’m gonna call serious bullshit.
WTF happened? ATLA had characters wearing interesting costumes with strong cultural influences that made sense for them, & the only problem was that they had to be simplified for animation, so a lot of intricate detailing was lost. And now they have more freedom to go wild on details we’re getting ‘just do Firelord robes for Fire Nation characters don’t bother thinking about what makes sense’. Especially when it comes to art of characters from the Chronicles of the Avatar books, which have such excellent worldbuilding.
[Source: AvatarWiki Twitter]
Source also has images of Jianzhu & Tagaka, whose designs are... okay, I guess?
Tagging @atlaculture idk if you have any thoughts on this design

Im not going to say you cant remake an animation in live action and it work. There is always value in retelling stories and looking through different lenses. But I will say most live adaptations dont respect the orginal medium. They see it as childish. Think themselves above; mature. And in doing so they miss what works in the original stories. This isnt just about Netflix's atla. But it IS about Avatar the last Airbender.
Avatar is quite possibly the closest thing ro a perfect television show out there. Its a compelling, timeless narrative; so perfectly molded for episodic animation. I truly do not see what a shorter live action adaptation could do that the original couldnt. So much would have to change to refit for all that would be lost.
The wonderfully choreographed and animated fight sequences. The magic system so well thought out and drenched in real martial arts and culture it doesnt feel magic. Neither of these things can be captured the same with cgi or practical effects. One could say theres value to be had in the real martial arts being done in real life. But enough to recreate the whole show? I think not. I think one would have to move much further from the original medium. Such as a stage play, or ballet. Something off the small screen. A television show made of real people is vastly different from one made of cartoon, but in the end it follows the same structure. And what of the way you tell the story is to change if the structure doesnt? A large issue with tv readaptations from cartoon to live action is it is both to different AND to similar.
Cartoons are animated for a reason. Anything can be imagined into them. And so their stories take the shape of magic and colors and movements no human could ever achieve.
No artform is invalid. Pinocchio has been told countless times since it was created. Many stories hardly even resemble the orginal serialization. Its been told in every art form you could think of. On tv; in your books! Animated; in real life! Stop motion; video games! But the most striking to me a version ive never been lucky enough to see myself. A atage production where everyone but the titular puppet is a puppet themselves. Pinocchio sits in stark contrast to these huge life sized puppets as a human.
You might be wondering where this little tangent came from. We've been talking about atla. And I bring up Pinocchio because I would have personally never conceived of making such version of that story. A truly unique take on such an old tale. And if someone could make a new moving version of a story thats been told so many times then whats the sin of retelling a newer tale of a new story? Whats the crime of remaking Avatar?
Atla is nearly a perfect story. but that does not mean there is not value in re-exploration. I just wish people would reexplore it in a more interesting way.

A Doggone Shame: Part 1
An Obscure Oneshot
Tumblr media
Inspiration art by Tracy J Butler
It's a rarity Mordecai finds himself home before sunrise, so it is with great delight he's enjoying some time to himself that fine autumn evening in 1926. He'd made dinner - a warming and nostalgic Matzo ball soup, with enough for tomorrow - had a shower, made a hot cup of tea and had just settled into his favourite armchair to continue reading Soldier's Pay by William Faulkner when there's a hurried, desperate knock on his apartment door.
The monochrome tom glances up, stilled in place with book in hand and cup halfway to his lips. He's not expecting to be bothered. The Lackadaisy would still be in full swing, which would keep most everyone Mordecai knows occupied until gone three tomorrow morning. It's possible Atlas has sent someone to fetch him at the last minute, but Viktor would not knock so gently, nor not announce himself.
Another knock, this one faster, more urgent. Mordecai sets his teacup down on its saucer and closes the book without saving the page, placing it on the chair. Slippered steps are silent as he crosses the room, habitually drawing a pistol from within his dressing gown on the way. He's tense as he presses his body to the wall beside the door - not the wood, as it's too flimsy - and cranes his neck to peer through the peephole, expecting at least an enemy.
Familiar large, yellow eyes framed by a deep brown bob cut stare back. The black feline sighs, though he's unsure if it is out of relief or vexation, and slips his pistol away. Taking a breath, he composes himself once more before answering the door. "Miss Pepp-Urgh!"
There had been more to his greeting, some formalities and an honest query for her visit, but Mordecai can't help but recoil when he sees what Ivy holds; a mangy animal, beady black eyes and nose standing in sharp contrast to scruffy, white fur. The creature is small enough to fit in an austere lady's handbag, sharp, unkempt claws loosely grasping Ivy's sleeve as its ratty tail swings uselessly between its legs.
A dog, he realises with disdain, scrunching his nose at the scent of slobber and damp fur. He takes a step back into his apartment and half-closes the door between them, as if the partial physical barrier might make it less revolting. Sadly, it does little. "Miss Pepper," he tries again, forgoing formality for precision. "Why is that… thing, outside my apartment?"
The girl puffs out her cheeks. "He's not a thing, he's a dog!"
Mordecai scowls at the creature, which seems to find joy in his discomfort; the thing wags its tail more intensely and in a fit of excitement, begins to squeak and struggle in Ivy's arms until unable to get free, begins frantically licking her chin. Ivy giggles and tries to block the slobbering tongue lashes with a hand, with very limited success. "Isn't he cute? I found him running about on campus, no collar or anything. He might be a stray!"
The very prospect of being slathered with dog germs makes Mordecai feel nauseous. He has no idea why anyone would willingly cohabit with such a beast, let alone allow it to share its microbiome so recklessly. Ivy has also pointedly avoided his questions. "If it's a stray," he asks carefully, choosing his words to evoke an accurate response. "Why bring it here? Why not transport the infernal thing straight to the pound-"
Ivy gasps and foregoes protecting her face from more licks to pointlessly cover the animal's ears with her free arm and hand. "Mordecai," she admonishes through grit teeth, yellow eyes wide and judgemental. "You can't be serious? They put strays down in the pound." She uncovers the dog's ears and snuggles him close, trapping its head under her chin. "I'm going to keep him! I just have to convince someone he'll be a great addition to the cafe!"
"Wonderful," the tuxedo tom cat answers flatly, ears laying flat and eyes narrowed with resignation. He doesn't want to run into this animal again, certainly not at his place of work. Unfortunately, given their unique brand of relationship, explaining as such would only encourage Miss May to keep the thing. He'll just have to pretend not to care. Starting now. "If that's all you wished to discuss, my tea is going cold. Good evening."
"Actually," the student interjects, even pressing a boot into the space between the door and frame before it can close, bringing the dog even closer while doing so. It's difficult for Mordecai not to hiss in discomfort at the renewed proximity. "I was hoping to ask a favour."
Green eyes fixed on the mongrel within inches of his pristine home, the statement snaps his gaze to wide, hopeful yellows. Ivy looks almost as pitiful as the animal she carries, gazing up at the man her Godfather would take everywhere like his personal shadow, batting her eyelashes and offering the soft smile that always works on Viktor.
He doesn't need to hear her question. "No."
"Come on, please?" The university student begs. Apparently still oblivious to his aversion, she holds it at arm's length towards Mordecai, forcing them within an inch of each other. Its tongue lolls absently, eyes devoid of intelligent thought, and its breath is faintly tainted with an unidentifiable stench. Mordecai grimaces. "It's just one night, and Atlas is so small! He won't get in the way or anything!"
Gingerly pushing her arms - and by extension, the dog - back into the hall, Mordecai snorts humourlessly. "Naming it after my employer does not garner additional sympathy for its wretched existence," the sharpshooter responds flatly. He feels like he needs another shower just being in the same building as the creature. "What on Earth led you to believe I would willingly shelter this creature at all?"
Her mouth twisting and brows knitting together, Ivy looks away. "Actually, I… you're kinda my last choice," she admits, holding Atlas tightly as he begins to whine and squirm anew. A few gentle pets calm him down, but her eyes water when their gazes lock once more."We're not allowed to keep pets in the dorms, so I asked Viktor and Freckle and even Miss May already if he could stay, but they were all yoo busy to talk tonight. I just need time to convince someone to keep him for a night or two while I convince Atlas to keep him. Please?"
Factoring in his own sacrifices and discomforts, Mordecai can see two possible outcomes to this request. First, he can refuse to assist and force her to take the dog to the pound. While this option would make his evening more pleasant, it could also incur negative affiliations with his character, of which he already has plenty. While unbothered by their perceptions, Atlas would likely find fault, something Mordecai does care to incur.
Alternatively, he could agree to house the glorified rat for a night or two, bolster his social standing with the few people he cares for the opinions of - namely, Atlas and Viktor, who are both fond of Miss Pepper - and garner appreciation from Ivy. Factoring in time to feed and clean up after the dog, it's a substantial and exhaustive alternative, but the potential benefits could outweigh the short-term detriments.
Despite the logical analysis, Mordecai feels like he's making a mistake when he sighs and opens his door wider again. "It can stay in the bathroom tonight," he concedes, but raises a stilling palm when Ivy begins to vibrate with excitement on the threshold. "A single night, Miss Pepper. I don't have the time nor patience to coddle the mongrel beyond that."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" The young feline speaks as she steps inside, bouncing on her heels as she heads for the bathroom backwards, so she can continue talking to her newest benefactor as she goes. "I'll bring him some food in the morning and go straight to Miss May to talk about Atlas after! I promise, you won't even know he's here! We just have to set him up with some old blankets for a bed."
Dark ears fold back, already regretting his decision. He'd not considered the messier components of a dog staying in his apartment, having assumed it would sleep on the tiles. "I do not own any old blankets; they are of the finest-"
"That's okay, he won't mind!" Ivy deposits the small bundle of problems onto the tiled bathroom floor and pivots straight to the airing cupboard, opening it up and extracting a slew of pristine, carefully folded sheets. To the tuxedo's horror - and before he can object - said sheets are dumped onto the likely bacteria-ridden tiled floor next to the toilet. "There! It's perfect! Now, some newspapers."
Mordecai has yet to recover from his dirtied sheets, hackles raised and tail fluffed when he dares to ask as Ivy retreats into the living area: "Newspapers?"
"Of course!" She yells from the next room, a sifting of paper as she rifles through his magazine rack. Mordecai stares at the little dog sniffing around his bathroom and the bundle of sheets with great interest. Its nose creates an obnoxious, displeasing snort with every breath, like a wheezing vacuum cleaner in dire need of a filter change. "In case he needs to go potty!"
Ivy reappears with an arm full of old broadsheets just as this new information clicks into place. The tom turns on her with a sharpness that could dislocate a lesser man's neck, his disgust evident on his usually carefully modulated muzzle. "Potty-? No, he is not… relieving himself in my bathroom. He will have to refrain until morning."
The black feline glances back to see Atlas is making himself at home in his borrowed sheets, climbing all over them while his nose works overtime. Mordecai shudders, deciding that once this ordeal is over with, he'll burn them, just to be sure whatever contaminants the beast left behind are dealt with. Ivy seems less concerned as she kneels down and sets out a number of sheets of paper. "He's a dog, not a person. He can't just hold it until you take him out."
Sitting back on her haunches, the university student studies her handiwork with a look of satisfaction. "There!" She says, leaning over to scratch behind a flopping ear. Atlas tilts his head slightly into the attention and begins jerkily twitching a back leg, his tongue lolling stupidly from his drooling maw. Ivy giggles. "You're all set, little guy! Now, be good for Uncle Mordecai, okay. Of course you will! Yes, you will!"
Mordecai watches the pair exchange idiocies with a sense of dread. He feels foolish, for being so shortsighted with his expectations. What had seemed to be a simple favour has already evolved into discomfort in his own home. The oddly overly-affectionate farewell Ivy offers the dog only intensifies those feelings, though he can't pinpoint a distinct emotion to associate it with as she kisses it's revolting head and stands back up.
"Thank you so much!" She reiterates as she turns back to the older feline lingering in the bathroom doorway. To both his surprise and relief, Ivy seems to step toward him for a hug, only to reconsider and falter at the last moment. An awkward second of silence passes before she clears her throat and edges around him, towards the front door. "I really mean it. Thank you! You saved that dog's life, Mr Heller. I'll make sure Atlas knows what a good man you are! See you tomorrow!"
She lets herself out, and Mordecai finds himself alone with a panting mongrel, the warm scents of saliva and dog seeping into the air as they stare each other down. The tuxedo tom cat wrinkles his nose, takes a step back into the living room and closes the bathroom door with care, eliminating the new problem from his peaceful evening. One night, he reassures himself as settled back into his chair, book in hand and a sip of lukewarm tea, trying to relax. How difficult can a dog be?

Writeblr intro!
Hello! I go by Nihil, I've been here for about three months, and I'm redoing my writeblr intro since my first one just isn't what I wanted it to be.
About My Writing
Okay, disclaimer, I'm not a novel writer! The stuff I do write is planning and scripts for comics I am planning on making.
My absolute favourite genre is superpowers, specifically mixed with action. This is probably why I've felt more drawn to comics as it's a vastly more popular genre than it is in written works.
I currently only have two WIP, both original stories. My favourite of the two is the aforementioned golden duo for me, superpowers and action. The others a fantasy-mystery-romance kinda thing.
About Me
I'm 17, from Canada. I've been writing since I realised it was something that people did and that books didn't just spawn out of the ether. Big on Japanese media, manga's and anime and the likes. Favourite anime are Licoris Recoil, Buddy Daddies and No.6, and favourite manga is Chainsaw Man.
My WIPs!
Blue Cataclysm
"Eramos Varma, the halfling son of an important religious figure among humans, and Cyrus, a halfling spy working for elves, meet through a kidnapping and get wrapped up in the investigation of a cult threatening them both."
You'll see a lot of art for this, since I'm trying to actually prepare to make the damn thing. Era is the guy I post that is freakishly tall and has dark blue hair, and Cyrus is the one thats kinda buff and has short, white-blond hair (not to be confused with Nat, the one with long white hair).
The Pandora Program
"The Pandora Program is a project run by the government to help juvenile criminals, among the small percent of the population with special powers, take time off their jail sentences by doing dirty work for the government. Varen Voclain is an interesting recent addition to this program, charged with multiple counts of terrorism, murder and assault after trying to go out for lunch with his mother."
Varen and Nathair, or Nat, are the main characters, but really there's five. Varen is a red-head and has a big scar across his nose bridge, Nat has long white hair and wears a face mask. Atlas is the one with brown hair and forearm crutches, Stelle is the short blonde one with the black hoodie and Charlotte has purple hair and six arms.
These always end up longer than I want them to be, but I figured it'd be useful to show some art as well since that's half my blog.

thanks for reading this far :)
