Was thinking about this scene and how many of us, myself included, saw it as a nice break in levity as well as Claudia possibly expressing a hint of interest in Kasef. Which would make sense, seeing as how she’s been around people who who don’t like her before (Rayla in early s2) and was never bothered about it, let alone this much. And, under that lens of interpretation, it’s funny just how different Kasef is from Callum in every way. He’s taller, colder, a more traditional prince with an even quicker temper. Yet Claudia is still comfortable being just as goofy with him.
The one thing he and Claudia (and Callum) have in common is a deep loyalty to their family, one that causes Kasef and Claudia to tunnel vision and just fall further and closer to their demises.

Watching the beach episode made me feel sad for Azula. She doesn’t seem to know how to interact with people in a way that doesn’t involve asserting dominance and or being in control in some way.
Zuko’s super awkward too, it makes me think as kids being the firelord’s grandchildren and later children prevented them from having normal interactions with kids. Also, I don’t think Mai and Zuko are a good fit. At first the goth energy was fun, but not in the Gomez and Morticia Addams kind of way. Mutual anger at the world isn’t necessarily the best basis of a relationship.

mai being jealous of katara due to the FN gossip?
i understand the point (especially with katara and not any other girl) and normally i would be glad to write some good drama, but i'm so so tired and deeply shocked by ship wars and insulting people based simply on their taste, and bashing real people because of a bunch of pixels in the kid show, and other mess which is going in this fandom... i won't write it.
if you want to read something about it or other mai/zuko/katara and vice versa situations, there are, i'm sure, plenty of fics on ao3, fanfiction.net and other sources. even though i actually have some thoughts and hcs, i'm not willing to write it here. i joked once about the certain ship. and people claimed me toxic and vile, thank you very much.
so i choose for myself to write in my maiko blog only about maiko (i'm not saying it about my fics!!!), and as i mentioned earlier, i'm really tired and overwhelmed of how far people can go and how rude they can be, and how easily they can assume ~everything~ about you as a human being (and blame you for your skin color or other things you didn't choose haha) because you ship this drawn boy with this drawn girl and not that. besides, maybe i run not the biggest maiko blog, but i have a decent number of followers and sometimes(!), some of them(!) look up to me, and i feel some responsibility for my blog and my audience. so when other people claim my followers toxic etc. because of my lame joke/post/any words... wow, i really don't want and don't need to see it.
so thank you, but no. i'm done with toxicity in atla. of course, it doesn't mean i'm the biggest pacifist here and spread only positivity and love and yay, and it doesn't mean i'm against more heavy topics in fiction (jealousy is one of them). but if i'd ever want to raise an issue of jealousy in maiko relationship, i'd rather think up some ooc person for example/for drama. i don't want to be involved in ship wars.
i must add, that i genuinely like and respect katara as a character, and i won't bash her here or somewhere else, like... ever :) i'm just saying, okay?
also i must add, that considering mai's interaction with jin in comics, and her behavior in 3x05 and 3x09 when she had been watching personally a very... active part of zuko's fan club and hadn't said a word to him, i could assume that she's not a jealous person in general. to write really jealous mai takes some grace imo.

Hoo boy.
Unfortunately, I’ve heard that quote before, so it wasn’t a surprise, but hearing it with context for the first time is... heavy. It’s a genuinely funny line, and I laughed, but man. There’s a lot going on there, isn’t it?
Azula genuinely believes with her entire being that Ursa hated her. That Ursa hated her and loved Zuko all the more simply because he wasn’t Azula. And honestly? With the small snippets of Ursa that I’ve seen thus far, I can absolutely see how she would have gotten that impression, especially being younger than Zuko. It’s no wonder she flocked to her father so quickly - she felt as if his love was her only option.

People talk about this all the time, but I need to talk about it some more.
ATLA continuously showed the strong contrasts between Sokka and Katara’s family vs Zuko and Azula’s.
They’re set up similarly, of course, with the mother absent, a younger sister and her older brother. The sister is, in some way, considered superior than her older brother toward the beginning because of her abilities, whether it be that she’s a prodigy or just has bending altogether.
But I just,,, HHHNNG.
First, let’s talk sibling relationships.
Sokka and Katara don’t get along all the time. But siblings bicker often, and that’s really all it is for the most part. They genuinely love each other and are devastated when one or the other gets hurt.
Azula and Zuko, as previously explored, don’t like each other but get along fine when their father isn’t there to pit them against one another. (i.e. 3x05 The Beach). Azula has tried to kill Zuko on multiple occasions, and she’s never had trouble manipulating him, even in their younger years. And it was all to please her father or because she was the favorite.
But what I REALLY want to talk about is the parental relationships.
Katara and Sokka loved both their mother and father.
Azula and Zuko both favored a different parent, and that parent favored them in return (not to say that Ursa didn’t love Azula, because she did, but there was clear dysfunction present in their relationship).
Katara and Sokka had a father that loved them both and did what he could for them.
Ozai, was, well, Ozai, and didn’t ever show any care or love for his son because Azula was always better.
Hakoda loved Katara and Sokka and never favored one or the other. (He never degraded Sokka for being a nonbender.)
(Ozai would have killed Zuko if he were a nonbender.)
It’s just apparent how the members of one’s family, primarily the fathers in these cases, can change the entire dynamic.
If Ozai didn’t treat Zuko like he did, and didn’t favor Azula to an extreme, maybe Azula and Zuko wouldn’t have the relationship shown in the show. Maybe they would’ve been more like Katara and Sokka, just a little bit.
If Hakoda has chosen to favor Katara because she could bend, Sokka would grow to resent her while she’d grow to believe he was inferior.
And I just think about that a lot.

Okay, my all time favorite crying scene is when Daniel Jackson breaks down in Stargate SG-1 2x05 “Need”. So fucking good. The way his face just falls and Jack hugs him close while rocking him back and forth. I love it.
Mike Warren in Graceland 3x07 when he breaks down with Charlie after the intervention is my second favorite (big surprise right? lol)
Other favorites include:
David Tennant in Single Father. The breakdown in the bathroom scene
Roger all throughout Outlander 5x08. But specifically when he starts crying while listening to Brianna sing Clementine to Jemmy

Avatar: The Last Airbender episode 3x05 ☆ﾟ*･｡*･
Beach episode Fire Nation style! I was actually hoping we’d learn more about Mai and Ty Lee and hopefully this is our chance.
Zuko’s hair is getting so long lol.
They’re going on an island where they used to go every summer as kids. Oh boi. There are going to be flashbacks and it’s going to hurt, uh?
The island is cute... but they’re staying with the two old ladies. Who say the beach has some kind of magical power that can help you understand yourself and each other... and get in swimsuits.
Meanwhile the gang is also relaxing in a lake. But Aang gets seen by Fire Nation soldiers who send a message to the Fire Lord. *facepalm* You had one job.
Meanwhile the Fire Nation gang is the most dysfunctional bunch of people ever and it’s the funniest thing.
They get invited to a party by some dudes who don’t recognize them... Azula says she is intrigued by the idea of seeing how people’d treat them when they don’t know who they are. Ember Island reveals the true you...
Zuko’s assassin intercepts and destroys the message about the Avatar being alive. Helpful, thanks I suppose...? I mean, putting the assassin-out-to-assassine-Aang part aside.
I love how Azula is unable to say something funny.
“For some reason when I meet boys they act as if I’m going to do something horrible to them” no one in this family has a grain of self-awareness lmao
I don’t know if Mai and Zuko are the absolute worst or absolute best couple. Both at the time time I suppose. When it was first shown they were a thing I thought it was some kind of fake dating to spy on each other or something but apparently they’re just two human disasters and they click together.
I’m laughing out loud asdfghjkl Azula
This episode is a fucking GEM I fucking STAN whoever came up with this.
Whoops Zuko and Mai broke up. Yeah, the human disasters theory fully explains everything.
Whee the angsty part begins. Zuko goes to their old beach house and remembers the past...
Meanwhile the assassin arrives and his forehead tattoo apparently sends explodey rays. Yikes. Did you blow up Alderaan or something...?
Awwww the beach does indeed work as a therapy session. Everyone yells at each other and blurts out their traumas! Yay! Our favorite disaster muffin finally admits/realizes he’s angry at himself. Because he’s confused and it feels like he can’t tell the difference between right and wrong... you are so close to the point sweetheart you just need a few more steps.
Aww they get back together. Now that they’ve actually talked it can be a healthy relationship! Good, good.
Ooh even Azula gets affected by the feeling-y environment. It weighed on her that her mother thought she was a monster... “she was right of course but it still hurt”. Girl be a normal person for once please
This is cute. Like they’re murderous disasters but they’re cute. I also like the parallel between Aang burning his glider and Zuko burning the family portrait. Always need some good ol’ pars destruens in narratives.
Excellent episode, insight on Mai and Ty Lee was very due, Zuko getting a grain of awareness over his own feelings was very needed, and Azula is intriguing as more than just murdery machine. As I think I’ve already mentioned in another post, it’s interesting how they haven’t been just writing her as “well she’s evil and does evil things” but in a way that makes her really seem like she cognitively lacks a capability for empathy. She seems unable to muster certain basic social skills, understand how humor works etc. I’m intrigued to see the writers’ choices for her because she seems to be written as an autistic kid on whom her father installed a specific script; she was rewarded for sticking to that script and the rest is history. It would run in the family after all.
(We’re going with ‘Zuko and Azula have AtlA-universe special autism that works differently from our-universe autism and just skips several generations as a time or jumps around family trees randomly’ because this-universe autism is generally inherited by the father and we don’t want to be like ‘the genocidal Fire Lords are autistic uwu’ okay.)
