On this day in 1968: American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos won the gold and bronze medals for the 200-meter race at the Olympics in Mexico City. 🏃🏾‍♂️🏅 Upon taking their places on the podium and receiving their medals, Smith and Carlos both bowed their heads and raised their fists. This moment is regarded as one of the most famous demonstrations of political activism in the history of both the Olympics and American sports overall. ✊🏾✊🏾

texan Eddie thirsting over Steve
wc:560 cw: none
Living near the Gulf of Mexico has a lot of perks.
Eddie prefers it to living in northern Texas, where him and his Ma were at, where the heat is dry instead of humid, the sun about dries him out like a piece of jerky.
Nothing beats sitting on his trailer porch sharing a cigar with his old man Wayne, other hand holding a sweating beer, hair gets big and frizzy, sunk down on a beach chair in a pair of blue denim jeans, and a sweat-stained wife-beater.
Even better, his most favorite weather, when there's light drizzling all day, like the sky has turned into a mist machine that sprays cool rain wherever he goes, while the sun remains smiling mighty bright. The green is green out here. The prettiest green you'll ever see.
Nah, see, the gulf has it's scary hurricanes and tornado warnings every once in awhile but nothing beats heading out to the beach and catching sight of a dolphin or two.
Not too far from Corpus Christi is a little place called Galveston Island where the buildings look straight out of an old western movie. He loves driving in his truck past all of the beach houses that are raised off the ground and finding neat sea shells that cover the sand.
Eddie was an adventurous child, so surprising, but now, living right here, like this, taking care of Wayne? Yeah a quiet life like this one couldn't get any better.
Certainly helps that there's a nice view across the trailer park.
A view where moles span bronze tanned skin, muscles flex and relax from turning a wrench thats working some thingamajig on a motorcycle, Eddie doesn't know shit about shit like cars. Big hands are covered in grease and oil, an almost black towel from said grease lays on a wide set of shoulders, that connect to a plush and hairy chest. And that chest connects to a hairy stomach, and a happy trail that leads to–.
"Ya starin' at that boy again?"
Eddie whips his head towards Wayne.
"Uhhh, no. Definitely not, don' know what you're talkin' bout, Wayne."
Wayne hides his smirk by pulling a swig from his beer, the smug bastard. He chances another look at the man out of the corner of his eye.
God almighty, Eddie’s never seen a man so sexy. Someone put him out of his misery.
"Hey, Steve! My nephew's lookin' for some help with his truck, do ya mind?"
Eddie mutters out a quiet, "Yer a son of a bitch, Wayne." He sinks further in chair, cowboy hat tipping down. Wayne just smiles bigger.
Steve looks up from he was focused on his bike and pushes his hair back from his face, using his hands to shield his eyes from the sun to see them. God, his biceps are huge, and fuck, his armpit hair is showing, jesus christ.
Eddie is but a weak, weak man, when faced with another man covered in thick, dark hair.
"'Course, sir! Y'all mind if I steal a beer or two when I come over?"
Jesus. Who needs a sun when Steve's around and has a billion wattz smile? It's making Eddie's insides all warm and gooey, somebody call an ambulance.
"That's no problem, son."
Anyway, yeah, living near the gulf in southern Texas, in a trailer park with Wayne. Well, that ain't too bad.

Away From Her Goalie - Clàudia Pina x Reader
A/n: next part in the Score A Goalie universe... enjoy! next one will take a while, it requires research:)
///
The UWCL final in Eindhoven was here. Barcelona versus Wolfsburg. Clàudia on the pitch, you watching from the stands. You hadn’t felt so anxious about a match since the Copa De La Reina final, Atleti against Real Madrid, a match that went from 2-0 up to Real Madrid to Atleti bringing it to 2-2, through extra time and into penalties. Atleti came out on top and you were unashamed to admit that you had shed tears of joy over Atleti’s victory.
You had spent your time after the league finished organising the stuff you had brought to Barcelona back in January, trying to fit what you needed for your plans after the final.
Both sets of plans, as Clàudia planned to help you with your move, before the two of you went on a small holiday to serve as a break for you before you were thrown into training for the NWSL with NJ/NY Gotham FC, a club in need of a strong goalie to maintain their position at number 1 in the table.
It was hard, but you no longer had your apartment in Madrid, moving your things into storage that you did want to keep, but selling a lot. Clàudia was keeping some of your stuff for your return to Barcelona, the plans being after the NWSL season was done in November, you would be able to visit whilst Atleti and Gotham sorted out the post-NWSL training you could do before the winter transfer window in January.
But your career wasn’t the focus right now, as you sat in the stands of the Philips Stadium, in Eindhoven, waiting. Pina was on the bench but the stadium energy was electric.
Wolfsburg may have scored two goals first, but you couldn’t help but think about the Copa De La Reina final, Atleti were two goals down before bringing it up to 2-2, taking it to penalties after extra time where Atleti won.
You did not want it to go to penalties.
The second half was different and you could feel it, Patri sending the ball into the net to take it to 2-1, then two minutes later, Patri sent the ball in again, the score going to 2-2. Rolfö eventually making it 3-2 but later shots were going wide.
Pina was finally subbed on for Mariona in the 79th minute, while Ana was subbed on for Caro at the same time.
You grimaced as Wilms fouled Pina, but it wasn’t long after that Wilms was subbed off. A clash between Bronze and Popp had all the attention on the sidelines however, as Ingrid and Alexia prepared to be subbed onto the pitch at the 89th minute. 7 minutes of stoppage time were added, your stomach twisting as you leaned forwards in your seat, watching carefully.
Popp and Paredes ended up with yellow cards after a collision almost looked like it would turn into a fight on the pitch, Alexia and Ingrid having been subbed on minutes before the seven minutes of stoppage time arrived. Tackles flew in with players dropping like flies and you couldn’t stop grimacing.
Eventually the minutes ran out, Barcelona being crowned champions of Europe as Queen’s We Are The Champions played across the stadium, the team swaying and Pina rocking the trophy like it was a baby.
She spotted you in the stands, grinning and waving as you waved back, jumping up and down in celebration.
///
The UWCL final was a flashbulb memory in your mind, and your fiancee’s as you sorted out your suitcases, the flight across the Atlantic amounting to more than 8 hours in the air, with Patri driving you two to the Barcelona airport.
“I will miss you, but I will miss your pancakes more.” Patri declared as she watched you travel with double the amount of suitcases as Pina, but the reasoning made sense.
You were moving countries for your career, your fiancee was helping you settle in first, but you were allowed a break before going head on into the NWSL.
A break that you were spending with Pina, visiting someone you hadn’t seen in almost a year. Jenni Hermoso, who currently resides in Mexico to play for Pachuca in the Liga MX Femenil.
Arriving at JFK airport, Pina pulled up her hood, whilst you dug through your backpack, eventually finding a pair of sunglasses and putting them on to obscure your face.
“Where do we go?”
“I was emailed instructions… we need to get the subway to…” you paused, looking between your suitcases, to your large backpack balanced on one of them, to Pina’s luggage, “we’re taking suitcases on the subway… great start.”
“So we go from central station and get a connecting train to New Jersey…” You went over the instructions, passing Pina your sunglasses as you found your hat, almost amused at the Atleti logo on it but you were pretty sure someone had recognised you both whilst on the subway already.
///
“This should be it. The club arranged something close to the subway so I could get around without a car.” You explained, putting the key in the lock and almost celebrating when it turned and opened the door.
Wheeling all the suitcases inside, you headed over to the windows as you heard your fiancee speak, “es pequeño,” as she locked the door behind you both.
“Un poco,” agreeing with her, but it was a studio apartment with a tiny kitchen and windows that let in a lot of natural light, the view of the city presenting the hustle and bustle of New Jersey as you gazed out at the busy road full of cars.
“It feels very… New York, New Jersey… I don’t see a bat signal though.” You joked, peeking through the blinds like you were looking for a way to summon Batman.
“Gotham.” Pina rolled her eyes playfully as she snickered at your joke, walking over to the window to have a look.
“Suppose I should unpack something. Can’t leave it all until I’m back from Mexico and you’re on a flight… back to Barcelona.” Meeting your fiancee’s sad gaze, you held back your emotions as she reached for your hand.
“What am I doing? Moving nearly forty thousand miles away from you for a few months in the hopes my goalkeeper career isn’t just sitting on a bench until I retire then get stuck trying to become a goalkeeper coach? I’m sorry, you deserve better.”
“No. I deserve you. We deserve each other, and we both deserve play time, but I want you too.” Pina declared, her hand cupping your cheek as your face softened from where it was scrunched up in sadness, trying to hold the tears back.
“I want you too, and I want to play minutes. You are the only person who has put me first in a long time. You’re it for me, mi vida, our souls are together, even when our bodies are so far apart. I want to come back to you, marry you, and never leave you again, unless you don’t want that-”
“I choose you, remember? And our bodies are not apart yet.” Pina smirked, leaning in to press her lips against yours, before pulling away as you smiled.
“You’re right. In fact, I think our bodies could be a little closer.”
///
It took a little while to get your stuff unpacked, the two of you heading back out to travel from Hoboken and ending up in Greenwich Village, Lower Manhattan.
“I’m sorry you’re missing Ibiza this year.” You apologised over dinner/lunch (the timezone difference threw you two off), but your fiancee shook her head, pointing out that she was getting to spend time with her fiancee, in a new city before heading to another new city for a few days and seeing Jenni again after so long.
“I missed you in New York last winter.” Pina rationalised, smiling at you, before avoiding eye contact with whoever was behind you as the two of you were recognised.
“When do Atleti and Gotham announce your loan? People are recognising us from Barcelona.”
///
The flight to Mexico was nowhere near as long as the Transatlantic flight from Barcelona, the two of you bringing a lot less luggage too as you both looked to find Jenni and whoever she had brought with her to pick you both up from arrivals.
“¡Hola mis bebés!” Jenni cheered, pulling you both into a hug when she spotted the two of you approaching.
///
Your time in Mexico came and went, revealing the engagement to Jenni and how you were going to be on loan to NJ/NY Gotham until the end of the 2023 NWSL season. Jenni’s reaction included how you did not ask for her blessing, before she was congratulating you both and hugging you for taking a big step in your goalkeeping career.
Now you were staring out of your tiny studio apartment’s windows, watching the sun rise and trying to hype yourself up on your first day with Gotham.
///
Atleti and Gotham posted their posts first. Atleti revealed you had been sent on loan to NJ/NY Gotham for the rest of the 2023 NWSL season with good luck.
Gotham was a little more excited for you, using a photo array of shadows to tease your arrival, the shadows even resembled Batman before the final reveal of you in the Gotham goalie kit, the shadows made to look like the Bat Signal through the use of the spotlights during the photography session.
You were the next one to post, announcing your loan with a repost of the photo of you in the Gotham kit, with Bat Signal shining onto the dark background behind you, followed by photos of New York and New Jersey you had saved from when you and Pina were exploring around the two states.
Your previous posts consisted of photos of you and Pina hanging out with Jenni in Mexico, throwing people off online who thought everyone would be going to Ibiza, whilst leaving fans speculating as your engagement rings were spotted in one of the photos.
‘Sorry I’m not Batman, but I’m here to protect Gotham.’ Your caption was cheesy, especially with the bat emojis that Pina copied into her comment, along with a heart and flame emoji reminding you of the early days in your relationship.

On this day, 16 October 1968, Black sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their gloved fists in a Black power salute during the playing of the US national anthem as they were awarded gold and bronze medals at the Olympics. Smith would later clarify: “I wore a black glove to represent social power or Black power; I wore socks, not shoes, to represent poverty; I wore a black scarf around my neck to symbolise the lynching, the hangings that Black folks went through while building this country.” Following the protest, they were largely ostracised by the US sporting establishment. While Time magazine now considers their picture of the event as the most iconic photograph of all time, back then they wrote: "'Faster, Higher, Stronger' is the motto of the Olympic Games. 'Angrier, nastier, uglier' better describes the scene in Mexico City last week." Back home, both Smith and Carlos were subject to abuse and they and their families received death threats. The Australian athlete Peter Norman, the other man on the podium, also showed solidarity with the protest wearing an 'Olympic Project for Human Rights' badge in protest of his government's 'White Australia' policy. He too would also be reprimanded by his nation's Olympic authorities and was not picked for the following Olympic games — although it is disputed whether this was as a consequence of his stand in Mexico. After Norman’s sudden death in 2006, Smith and Carlos helped carry his coffin and delivered eulogies at his funeral. Oh, right, I never posted these!  Here are the rocks I acquired at my last rock show!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This big sparkly girl with the bottle green, glassy appearance is vivianite, a rock which is just as fragile as it looks!  Vivianite has some really cool properties.  It begins as a colorless mineral, but as soon as it’s exposed to light, it undergoes a chemical reaction that turns it this blue-green color.  As long as it’s exposed to light, this chemical reaction will continue, and the crystals will turn darker and darker until they’re completely black.  Another cool thing about vivianite is that it exhibits pleochroism, meaning the crystals look more green or more blue depending on the angle you view them at.
Tumblr media
This funky-shaped sparkly girl is a scepter quartz!  Scepter quartz occurs when a younger crystal begins growing on the tip of an older one, resulting in a big crystal perched atop a skinny one, like the jewel atop a scepter!  This scepter is a smoky amethyst with some really cool stuff going on inside.  My favorite detail is those red spots, which are caused by needle-like crystals of hematite growing inside the quartz!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the third meteorite to join my collection!  This piece fell to Earth about four to five thousand years ago in northern Argentina.  Its melted appearance is because the heat of entering Earth’s atmosphere actually caused it to melt!  Campo del Cielo meteorites are iron-nickel meteorites, made from a metal alloy called meteoric iron.  (Ok, so, not to go off on a tangent but meteoric iron is really cool stuff, historically.  See, iron doesn’t occur on planet Earth in its native, metallic form.  It’s always bound up in ores and has to be processed.  But native iron does occur in the vacuum of space, and sometimes that iron falls to Earth as meteors, so the only iron that Bronze Age people had access to before the advent of iron smelting was from meteors.  They made some really cool stuff with it.  Did you know that Tutankhamen was buried with a dagger made from meteoric iron?)
Tumblr media
This fossil boy is a slab of turritella agate!  It comes from a fossil deposit in Wyoming called the Green River Formation.  Those white shapes are the fossilized shells of turritella sea snails encased in chert.  These shells were once buried at the bottom of an ancient ocean!  Because of the cool patterns their cross sections make, turritella slabs like this one are used by lapidary artists to cut cabochons for jewelry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of cool agates, here’s a neat little fire agate!  This piece came from the southwestern United States.  That metallic, rainbow iridescence (or “fire”) is caused by alternating layers of goethite and limonite, which form as botryoidal bubbles encased in translucent chalcedony.  Fire agate is one of the coolest forms of agate, because it’s so incredibly rare!  The only place in the world where it’s found is an area from central Mexico up through California and Arizona, where it was formed during ancient volcanic activity.
Tumblr media
Here’s another cool agate!  This is Aztec purple lace agate, which comes from Mexico.  I don’t think they’re mining it out anymore (actually, it hasn’t been mined for a long time), so this is pretty scarce stuff!  It doesn’t photograph well, so trust me when I say that this piece is much purpler in person.  Other than that, I don’t know much about it!
Tumblr media
Also very purple and also from Mexico is this Coyamito agate!  Note the super cool hexagon shape.  Coyamito agate is known for its pseudomorph formations: it replaces other minerals and grows in their shape.  That’s rare in agate, but super common in the Coyamito agate deposit!  In this case, the agate was growing in the hollow left behind by a hexagonal crystal.
Tumblr media
Here’s something I’ve been wanting to add to my collection for a long time!  This dignified boy is royal imperial jasper, possibly my absolute favorite kind of jasper. (And unlike most of the rocks the crystal healing crowd likes to slap the word “jasper” on, he’s actually a real jasper!)  We’re seeing in cross-section what’s known as an “egg” formation, the result of a jasper nodule which started small and then grew outward in uneven layers.  Changes in the environment during the formation of each layer resulted in all these different colors!  This piece is also from Mexico.
And finally (drumroll please), it’s time for opals!  As is tradition, I came home from the show with three brand new Ethiopian opals.  Here they are!
Tumblr media
Opal number one!  Beautiful!  Subtle and refined!  10/10!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opal number two!  Stunning!  A style all her own!  Her birthmarks really add warmth and color to the overall presentation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opal number three, the Big Girl.  Gorgeous!  Full of fireworks!  What a wonderful sparkly girl!

A pure australium coin, worth 100 Australian dollars. A portrait of a kangaroo is depicted wearing a crown reminiscent of St Edward's Crown. The kangaroo is called Queen Trixie, as inscribed by the text at the top. The dates 1947-1967 are also written. It is unknown whether these dates is the timeframe from when this coin was minted, or if it is the timeframe of Queen Trixie's rule. The same dates are also found on a post stamp, also featuring Queen Trixie, suggesting that 1947-1967 is the timeframe of her rule, though this is speculation.
Tumblr media
A silver dollar featuring the original Soldier, Abraham Lincoln, hired by the MANN twins roughly between 1850-1930. He is depicted shouldering the stock Rocket Launcher, launched high in the sky, into the clouds. Text on the coin says "Abraham Lincoln", "Inventor of the rocket jump", and a quote from Abraham saying "I love arena mode"
Tumblr media
A bronze coin worth half an American dollar. The coin features Claude Huggins, the founder of Teufort, New Mexico. Claude is crouching down, his arms are bent and raised to hold down his hat. He is in this cowering position under a rearing horse. The fact that the steed is rearing, and that Claude appears to be directly under the front half of the horse, suggests that the horse is a statue. The text "A proud legacy of hiding" is embossed to his right.
Tumblr media
A structurally questionable gray coin made of 100% pure badlands gravel, worth 5 cents. A pile of gravel with ray-like lines haloing the top of the pile is featured. The text "In pits we trust" is depicted.
Coins obtained by using a Gun Mettle Campaign Pass, which was a pass for a three month event which ended the 30th of September, 2015, during the Gun Mettle Update. Players were given the 5 cents coin upon using the pass, and the coin tracked progress with contracts by "levelling up" to the next rank of coin.

This scene for context:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional context for both undercut.
Demestrap
In several london and modern productions, it is hinted that Munkustrap and Demeter are a couple. Munkustrap defends Demeter from Macavity's attempt to kidnap her. In these portrayals , Demeter usually comforts Munkustrap following the fight, and they are frequently depicted cuddling, and snuggling afterwards.
The way this fight usually ends is with Munkustrap knocked out by the end, Alonzo entering the fight to help but being thwarted by Macavity, and the tribe uniting to face Macavity until he realizes he's outnumbered and flees.
youtube
Present in: London Productions and the UK Tours, 1998 Film, Broadway Revival and US Tour 6. RCCL, Asia tours, Vienna revival, Uk/ international tours 2019 and 2022, Moscow 2005.
Demelonzo
In most international productions in the 1980s and 1990s it was assumed that Demeter and Alonzo were a couple. Alonzo defended Demeter by thwarting Macavity's attempt to take her. In these narratives, Alonzo is usually harmed during the fight, and Demeter tends to him by the end.
Alonzo is usually his "Golden Alonzo" self in this rendition. adorned with gold, bronze, and brown patterns.
A major distinction between this fight and the one with Munkustrap is that Munkustrap is knocked out earlier and Macavity is usually defeated by Alonzo by taking him on head-on and weakening him until he has to flee. (Alonzo was not spared of harm given Macavity’s nature)
youtube
Present in: (OBC, US Tours 1-5), Vienna 1983, Paris 1989, Zurich 1991, Euro Tour 1994,. Sydney 1985 and Melbourne 1987 and the Australian Tours, Hamburg 1986 and Stuttgart 2001, Mexico Tour 1991 and Buenos Aires 1993.)
