Ellie Carpenter
For years, the world of women's football has been hearing the name 'Ellie Carpenter' for her outstanding achievements from a young age. Some notable accomplishments include being the youngest soccer player in the history of the Olympics, and being Australia's first international football to be born in the twenty-first century (male or female). She has received many individual accolades, such as the 2020 Asian Women's Player of the Year, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team of the decade, 2021 and 2022 PFA Australian Women's footballer of the year, 2021 and 2022 Young Australian Women's footballer of the year, and AFC player of the week (making her the first woman ever to win this). Ellie Carpenter is a highly decorated player at the ripe age of 22.
Ellie Carpenter started playing for the Australian senior women's national team at age 15, the same year as her W-league debut for the Western Sydney Wanderers. She has played for three W-league clubs, most notably Melbourne City, where she helped her team win the league premiership by scoring a brace against her former club. After securing that victory, she won the W-League's Young Footballer of the Year for the third consecutive year (18-20). She has been highly successful on her home turf.
After shining on the international stage with the Matildas, Carpenter got signed to one of the NWSL's most successful clubs, Portland Thorns. She became the youngest player in the NWSL, then ten days later, the youngest goal-scorer. She helped lead them to a second-place finish in the league in 2018 and a third-place finish in 2019. After her remarkable and record-breaking career for the Thorns, the club announced her transfer on a 3-year contract to the French giants, Olympique Lyonnais, one of the best women's teams in the world.
For Lyon, she shone as a regular starter. She was voted best new signing by Lyon fans in 2020. She was named to the Ligue 1 team of the season, wrapping up her first season for the French powerhouse very nicely. With Lyon, she has won 2 UEFA Women's Champions League (UWCL) titles. Unfortunately for Carpenter, she was on the bench in the 2020 final, and although she started in the 2022 final, she tore her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in only the 13th minute. This shouldn't be a detriment to her success, as she was a vital part of the squad in all three of her seasons in France, where with Lyon she has won 2 UWCLs, 2 French titles, and a French Cup title. Now after tearing her ACL, Carpenter has signed a new 3-year deal, sealing her future with the massive club until 2026.
Ellie Carpenter's success would be commendable for any player, but the most exciting thing about her is that she hasn't even reached her full potential. She frequently makes lists such as top 50 or 100 female footballers, or more significantly, was named number two on ESPN's 21 under 21 list in 2021. At age 22, she still has many years to continue to hone her prowess of skills and dominate women's soccer.
The young defender plays a pivotal role for Australia, the team being generally more successful when she is present. Over the past 15 months, the Matildas have a record of 10-4-7 with Ellie Carpenter, and 0-1-4 without the star wing-back, making their success ratio respectively 57%-10%. This could be luck, but Carpenter's ability to make huge defensive tackles, then immediately transition in a dangerous attack, creates many of Australia's more well-constructed goal attempts. She has proven time after time that she can hold the world's best attackers off, such as the likes of Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd. During the Tokyo 2021 women's Olympic soccer tournament, Carpenter was a key player to Australia's successful and historic run. She received two player of the match awards from the Matildas, as well as being recognized by many women's soccer fans as one of the best defenders of the tournament. Her presence is key for Australia.
Carpenter plays her right-back position with ease, very rarely messing up and recovering in the rare occasion she does. She frequently makes runs up the side and delivering perfect balls for attackers to finish. She often records assists on both the international and club stage. Carpenter's speed is a dangerous weapon well-utilized by her country seeing as she is one of, if not the fastest player on the Matildas squad. Her connection with Matildas teammate and fellow speedster, Hayley Raso, is a deadly combination down the right-hand side that breaks down many world class defenses. Carpenter doesn't often score, but scored her second and third goals for her country in a remarkable fashion in the historic 18-0 win over Indonesia.
A formidable opponent, Ellie Carpenter will surely come back even stronger for a home Women's World Cup in 2023.

India's match vs Taiwan was cancelled because of a COVID outbreak in the India squad, and it's possible India might have to withdraw from the entire tournament??? I hope this is not the case, but the journo I first saw the news from seems to think it is a possibility.
I hope the AFC sort this out, this is an eventuality they should have been prepared for. The best scenario at this point would be for the AFC to reschedule the match, but I don't know if they would be able to find the time since it's such a short tournament. And who knows if India will even have enough healthy players in time? 😢
