Tarlos Week 2022 Day 4: Tarlos + Home

I still find it hilarious that when TK tells Carlos to scoot over in 3x05, Carlos just knows to scoot to the edge of the couch so that TK could have the inside spot.

I've seen people say TK uses physical touch/sex as a distraction from his feelings and actually talking to Carlos about things but I'm wondering if it's him trying to show love in his love language? Or maybe tk is just really thirsty bc Carlos always just looks like That? (bc same tk, same.)

As LL answers anon asks from a month ago, I appreciate you bearing with me. Dear nonny, I held onto this one because it's an important beat to me in 3x13 and I wanted to give this ask it's due.

I think that physical touch, for TK specifically, holds a couple different bits of significance. I'll get into it under the cut.

We all know by now that physical touch is a big part of TK and Carlos's love language. They're like puppy level of physicality with each other from the start. Even when they're somewhere between FWB and Boyfriends in season one, they have a deep casual physicality. 1x05 is a great example of this (including that still of the deleted scene that is the thumbnail on hulu). We have the missing tamale scene but we can see Carlos wrap himself around TK from behind (a favorite Carlos move), and then when they come to pick up Paul, Carlos and TK are side by side their shoulders touching. In the club, TK reaches for Carlos and wraps Carlos's arm around his shoulders.

As things develop between them, this only grows more pronounced. As recently as last episode, while it wasn't a huge Tarlos heavy episode, in 3x17, when Carlos shows up, before he goes to get his chili that he came for, he stops and runs his hand down TK's chest before Mateo distracts him. Similiarly, as medical gets called while Carlos gets his chili, TK reaches out to scratch at Carlos's back as he leaves.

So yes, I think part of it is physical touch in general is part of how they connect. Even Carlos starts that scene in 3x13 by coming over and doing his signature wrapping himself around TK from behind move.

But in 3x13, the thing people were talking about is TK turning the conversation and the physicality sexual.

So, the sexual connection has been there from the beginning with TK and Carlos...we all remember the first 15 minutes we knew them...and it's a lot. It's an important part of their relationship even if we haven't seen the end result of it this season, we've seen some starts-like the way Carlos drags TK down to the couch in 3x04 and the end of the opening scene in 3x13.

BUT, when TK isn't doing well, mentally, he often shuts down the physical touch stuff, and that we've seen consistently over the past two seasons. In 2x04 when Carlos is trying to pretend like everything was fine TK keeps a solid space between them and won't let Carlos touch him. In 2x12, once again, when TK gets physical it's violent and when Carlos tries to hold him TK freaks out. In 3x04 Carlos feels touching TK while he's unconscious would be a violation which made me wonder what happened in the loft fight. When we open in 3x08 TK is entirely shut down and while he lets Carlos touch him, TK doesn't reciprocates until after the plane disaster (Aside for reaching out when he realized Carlos wasn't coming along for the ride), when he was closer to himself because he'd done his job on the plane and now Carlos was distraught and TK was able to comfort him. At the end of 3x13 when Carlos comes home to find TK on the couch with the photo albums, he sits right next to TK on the smallest section of the couch and at one point reaches his arm around TK to either hold him or rub TK's back. When Carlos does that though, TK pretty quickly decides to go to the bedroom and be alone. Even when Carlos comes to get him and insist on TK getting up and eating, he doesn't breach into TK's personal space. TK reaches out afterwards, when he realizes what Carlos has done and that he's going to leave.

So, TK being able to initiate touch at all, let alone sexually, is a HUGE indication, TO ME, that his work at his meetings and with Cooper is allowing TK to come home as a full partner to Carlos.

Additionally, y'all, Carlos is trying really hard to drown himself in TK's addition in 3x13 and it's really uncomfortable to watch, for me. Carlos is leaning on some pretty codependent behaviors to be the person that TK unburdens all of that on. And it makes sense for Carlos, he is a control freak and he cannot control this, but he wants to. TK is his person and his well-being is so essential to Carlos.

BUT both TK and CARLOS deserve a relationship that exists beyond TK's addiction. TK has, at the point he comes home in the opening Tarlos scene in 3x13, spent at least four hours processing his addiction, his cravings, and made himself safe to come home. Then when he comes in, he shared about what happened in general beats at his meeting, that he asked Cooper to be his sponsor, noted that Carlos's research aligns with what he and Cooper talked about, gives over a big revelation of what Cooper said that he's thinking about and thanked Carlos for all that he does to support TK. And then TK's done. He's ready to get this shirt off of his boyfriend's chest, because that's why he's doing all of this work, so his addiction doesn't swallow them both whole. So they can get back to a sexual level of physicality that had been missing since Gwyn's death.

Again, with Carlos in yoga clothes doing yoga...TK was restless sure, but he's not blind. He was very distracted by the sweatpants, and frankly, considering the gifs and comments, so were y'all. You cannot blame the man. Group therapy sessions seem to work really well for TK and he doesn't have to worry about Carlos's feelings as he processes his own in those settings.

Because, here's the thing, when you are a person with mental health struggles with a partner with mental health struggles, you can get into a spiral with each other when one of you is going down. If you don't think TK isn't intimately aware of Carlos's anxiety and his feelings of responsibility, well, you've missed the way he shoulders the burden of Carlos's feelings in 2x12 and 3x08 at the end of the episode. He knows how Carlos gets, and the depth of TK's addiction is a place where that anxiety can run wild. It's not up for Carlos to hold it, even if he wants to.

And we know TK has used sex, particularly with Carlos, to feel something again when he's numb. That was a season one coping technique. His interactions with Carlos in 3x13 don't read the same as their early sexual interactions in 1x02 and 1x03 or even how he strides into the bar when he just wants to feel something.

So, the short answer is, yes and no. Sure, it might be a way of moving Carlos off of a conversation TK is done with or has answered or because he's thirsty af for Carlos and because he WANTS to be sexual with his boyfriend again for the first time in awhile. And their relationship should be more than TK's addiction. Everyone is more than their worst moments, and their sexual connection is an important part of that.

Season 3 Character Highlight - 3 Things

Character: TK Strand

Favorite 3 scenes:

3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: The proposal was beyond anything I could have come up with. It was absolutely perfect and I wouldn’t change a single second of it. The way his smile didn’t leave his face, the way he never doubted the way Carlos would answer.

3x15 “Clown Down”: I love all of the Tarlos scenes in this episode, but my favorite TK moment is when he realizes that Lou has escaped so he tries to distract Carlos, nearly successful until the Lizard decided he wanted to be on Carlos too.

3x08 “In the Unlikely Event of an Emergency”: It’s hard to pinpoint one scene to highlight, but the scene with Gwyn on the plane, after drinking in the bathroom and then when he grabs onto her hand in the “Amen” montage. My second choice would be the scenes with Carlos, both at the loft and on the tarmac.

Favorite 3 lines: funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous

3x08 “In the unlikely Event of an Emergency”: “I have to stay here, mom. They need me. Plus, look at me, I'm fine. I'm a firefighter, mom. I save lives.”

3x12 “Negative Space”: “He’s stalking a stalker and he brought a date” & “At least our fire insurance is up to date since last time he pissed off a maniac our entire place burned to the ground.”

3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: “It’s not drama, it’s love. The kind that you can’t get away from.” The whole scene was amazing, but this part, the part where TK acknowledges that the love they share is something that is meant to be. “The love that I feel is infinitely more powerful than the fear of losing it” is a very close runner up.

Favorite 3 dynamics:

Carlos: The connection between these 2 was clear from the beginning, but has surpassed any expectations I could have had. They balance each other out, they love freely, they make each other better. We got lucky with the casting in this show.

Nancy: Nancy is the sister he never had, never knew he wanted, but now doesn’t know what he would so without. She is the #Tarlos Fan. She calls him on his shit, which is needed, but also shows that she pays attention to what he doesn’t say as much as what he does – ex: getting Carlos to the hospital at the end of 3x02.

Fire Fam: The relationships he has formed with Paul, Marjan, and Mateo is very different than the one he has with Judd, but equally important. The will scene in the firehouse is a great representation of his relationships with Marjan, Paul, Mateo, & Nancy. Judd is more of a older brother he never had, someone that he actually looks up to, but also trusts to not let TK’s head get too big/keep him rooted in reality.

3 things we learned:

Name:  We learned that the Tyler portion of his name came from an uncle that died as a child. This makes me way more curious on the Kennedy middle name now.

History:  We learned that his drug addiction was more than just opioid pills, but heroin as well & that Gwyn made him go to a rehab in California in 2017, which was more recent than I had thought it was.

How much like his parents he really is:  He is very used to self-sabotage (just like Owen) and tends to blow things up & run (Both Owen & Gwyn here). The difference is, now, TK wants to be different, he wants to stop running.

3 hopes for season 4:

Less trauma for one season – I know this one is a long shot, but really give the guy a break. NO hospital beds for 1 season, that is all I ask (but don’t expect – they seem to love hurting him)

A worry-free wedding – Lets save the drama for the honeymoon or their return. Let the actual wedding go off without a hitch.

Healing in his relationship with Owen – Owen has a pretty decent relationship with everyone, apart from his son. Season 1 – they were great, season 2 – he reminded me so much of my own father, I hated him (with a few exceptions), Season 3 was an improvement, but they didn’t have a scene of just the 2 of them from 3x08 until 3x18.
