eddie wondering why chris didn't talk to him about his crush, like babe i'm not sure you, a 30+ year old repressed gay man who's in love with his best friend/son's co-parent but is either unaware of it or won't do anything about it, is the person christopher would look to for dating advice

building castles in the sky
6x08 coda
christopher spills into the schoolyard surrounded by a gaggle of kids, bright-eyed and grinning, a flush tinting the shells of his ears bright red. he gets that from me, eddie thinks, looking at him, the knowledge settling warm and certain in his chest. christopher is like him in so many ways, but they’ve never looked much alike; this, at least, is one way eddie can see himself in his son.
“hey!” he exclaims when christopher gets close, crouching down for a hug and quickly getting back to his feet when christopher gives a frantic shake of his head, glancing off to the side at a gathering of his friends. “how was the party?”
“good!” christopher says, then starts climbing into the car before eddie can get another word in.
eddie looks at carla, who raises her eyebrows. “guess that’s all we’re getting out of him,” she says, laughing, and eddie purses his lips.
“looks that way.”
they drop carla off on the way home, and christopher sits silently in the backseat staring out of the window. eddie glances back at him in the rearview mirror a couple of times, and sees a secretive little smile playing around his mouth.
but eddie doesn’t pry. he remembers being eleven, remembers his first school dance and the butterflies that started unfurling in his stomach. he remembers, too, the look on his father’s face when he got home, the knowing nudge of an elbow, the way he’d tugged on the corners of eddie’s collar. what a little ladies man you’ve grown into, he’d said.
it had felt wrong, even then, in ways he hadn’t even begun to understand. he doesn’t want to do that to christopher.
so he lets christopher hold on to whatever it is, lets him smile out of the window and disappear into his room to change into his pyjamas without a word. he goes in to say good night, later, and finds christopher looking up at him like he’s trying to figure out how to say something. but the words don’t come, so eddie tucks him in and tells him he loves him and stands up to head out.
it’s only as his hand brushes the light switch by the door that christopher calls out. “dad?”
“yeah?” eddie says, turning back to him.
“how do you know if you like somebody?”
eddie blinks. “like a friend?”
“no!” christopher groans, flopping back against the pillow. “like more.”
“oh,” eddie says, and crosses back to the bed. he sits down, settling in with one leg pulled up. “do you think you like somebody like that?”
christopher sighs and covers his face with his hands. “yeah.”
“hey,” eddie says, tugging at one of his hands. “it’s not a bad thing.”
“but how do you know?” christopher asks.
“i guess it’s a little different for everybody,” eddie says. “but when you like someone… you want to be around them all the time. you always want to talk to them, and tell them about everything that happens. when you tell a joke, or when something’s funny, you check to see if they’re laughing, too.”
christopher sighs again. “i definitely like somebody.”
eddie’s face splits into a smile, and he reaches out, thumbing at christopher’s chin. he squirms away from the contact, but he grins up at eddie anyway, pleased and a little shy. “hey,” eddie says, ruffling christopher’s hair. “that’s great. do you want to tell me about them?”
christopher looks thoughtful, then bites his lip. “maybe tomorrow?”
“of course, buddy,” eddie says. “whenever you’re ready.”
he gets up again, makes it out of the room and turns the lights out this time. he whispers a final good night from the doorway and heads to the living room, digging his phone out as he collapses on the sofa.
he opens his texts with buck and types out guess what chris just told me, then stops with his thumb hovering over the send button.
his own words echo in his mind. you always want to tell them about everything that happens, he’d told christopher not five minutes ago. and here he is, texting buck about what just happened.
but—it’s buck. he always tells buck about things.
it doesn’t mean anything.
right?
he sends the text.

Um, are we gonna talk about this?!?!?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carla orders dim sum during her and Eddie’s school dance stakeout. That seems important bc based in info above in the screenshots, the show is illustrating Carla’s role in Eddie’s narrative as a stop gap measure or stand in for the home/family dynamics that he really wants. His fantasy is for something more with someone who wants more with him, including a kid and a making a home together. Carla’s cool but she’s not that person, obviously, ofc we all know that. But Buck is that person, or will be! Carla’s presence at that milestone for Chris was dim sum - touching Eddie’s heart but not filling his heart. He’s craving more with his own crush/partner. This idea fits with the ending of 607 (eddie’s talk of the future) and all the talk of crushes and new love in 608. Am I in the weeds here or does this dim sum reference actually do some work in telling the story of where Eddie is at right now?? Don’t mind me. Just chewing glass.

Please tell me I’m not the only one thinking that uncle Buck babysitting Jee is gonna make him think about parenthood and make him realise he’s actually not ok with donating his sperm.
That he’s gonna have a crisis about it because he already said yes and feels like he can’t back out (because that’s who Buck is!) and it brings on his meltdown!!!

6×08 Christopher's first crush
Okay, so I get wanting Buck to be there for Chris' first crush moment but let me tell you, my brain cells had a DVD logo hitting the corner moment and I honestly think it was even better to have Carla there with Eddie instead.
Now before we get into it let's remember some already-established facts:
Eddie's parents never approved of his relationships (bar maybe Ana) and made him feel like he needed to find a Mom for Christopher, and he listens to it in some way proved by the fact he dated Ana
Eddie always feels like he's failing Christopher in some way or another (the examples are endless here)
Eddie has been going to therapy and working towards abolishing his toxic masculinity upbringing thoughts etc.
Eddie sees Carla as a voice of reason and listens to her advice (ie breaking up with Ana after remembering her advice)
Now for the explaining part.
So, first of all, I think it was incredibly important that Eddie be able to have this moment where he gets to focus solely on his relationship with Chris because it allows for things to be passed by more clearly. Like if Buck was there, there would be:
Eddie's relationship with Chris
Buck's relationship with Chris
Eddie's relationship with Buck
Eddie, Buck, and Chris as a family
With Carla we only have
Eddie's relationship with Chris
Carla and Eddie's friendship
(and a bit of Carla's relationship with Chris)
This means we have fewer angles to juggle and we get to focus on the important aspects of things, especially because Carla is very much a neutral character, a mediator who's already established and whose relationship with either Diaz has long since been defined. She's a permanent fixture in that household, which is important.
Because this episode was about two major realisations for Eddie:
The realisation that he's raising his son just fine despite his parents' less than favourable views
The realisation that his fantasies could become a reality
Okay so first off, to explain realisation number 1
Having Eddie do the first crush getting his son ready part without Buck was very much so we could get the single-parent Eddie vibe. Because with Buck, he's always gonna have a second parent there, unofficial as he might be. This was a him thing alone.
So seeing his son thrive and realising that the doctors, his parents, and even Shannon at some point, were wrong and that he can have high expectations because with the right support system, Chris will exceed them time and time again was just a big "huh, so maybe they were wrong about this too".
This was him realising that he's doing a good job with Christopher and that the support system he has going on (Buck, Carla, the firefam) is more than enough, and he doesn't need to find Chris a Mom for him to have a good life, he's doing better than anyone ever expected just like this.
And for all intents and purposes, Carla is the closest thing Chris has to a Mom. As his aide, she takes care of him, is the person to spend the most time with him bar Eddie and Buck, and she clearly loves him to pieces. Even though she is an employee, she does almost everything a Mom would. And she does all that while having her own husband and being friends with Eddie.
So her presence there serves as an acknowledgement that while Chris benefits from having a female role model in his life, especially since he spent so much of his early years with Shannon, that doesn't mean Eddie needs a wife. Carla fills the role of a Mom without filling the role of a second parent. She brings that feminine touch that Eddie's been indoctrinated to search for while also remaining enough on the outside that Eddie could have a partner.
This brings us to realisation number 2
Now that Eddie has seen that his fantasies can become a reality (Christopher thriving in school, having a maternal figure without having to be a ready-made family like with Ana), he realises that maybe some of his other fantasies (aka Buck) can become a reality too.
We especially see this when Carla talks to him about fantasies, and they immediately cut to Buck getting Jee's room ready. It's him realising that if his fantasies have become a reality, then maybe his Buck fantasy could too.
And what makes this even better is that we can see all throughout this episode where Buck can fit. He can be Chris' second parent while both of them would still be balanced out by Carla's never-ending patience and wisdom. He could be a partner for Eddie and a parent for Chris, and they don't have to "give up" anything to have that because Buck has his own space already.
And just overall it was important to have Buck still on the outside of that because Eddie is an established parent and Carla is an established feature, but Buck is still an unstable fantasy-type thing for Eddie and he needed to realise that he could have that without putting his son's stability or his own in jeopardy.
So yeah those are my thoughts, not fully sure how coherent this is or how much sense it made cause my mind's going at lightspeed with all the thoughts and excitement, but yes. Overall loved this episode.

I think everyone should be allowed to have their own opinion on whether or not buddie is going to go canon, but anyone who thinks Buck is not Christopher's other dad is just straight up WRONG!
I mean, what is the show supposed to do? Outright say that Buck is borderline co-parenting Chris with Eddie?
Oh wait, they already did that, they had Eddie say: "It's in my will, if I die you become Christopher's legal guardian."
and no, last night's episode did not change that, I actually genuinely think it was good that Buck wasn't there with Eddie at the end! Him being there would have overshadowed Eddie and his reaction!
Eddie, who for so long carried so much guilt with him about missing out on Christopher's early milestones (*cough* Eddie Begins *cough*) finally being there and being able to witness this one of Chris made me tear up.
