of apple pies and bloody knives chapter one: a haze in the fields
Tumblr media
warnings: pilot to slasher!graves x fem!reader, hallucinations, hauntings, paranoia
word count: 1,000
Amber waves of grains only applied to two parts of the United States, the Midwest, and Texas. Even with being one of the most well-known lines within American patriotism, one must see the image of urban life rather than endless fields of golden. Flat plains rolled by the windows of her small Chevy, the peaked window caused strands of brown hair to dance in the warm, late summer air. Over her shoulder in the back of the Impala, boxes of essentials clinked and clattered whenever the pavement proved to be porous
Sporadically hitting small towns on the way to her destination, fields turned into hills and then back to drier, rougher patches of empty land, a white dot of a house on the horizon. Orange clouds illuminated the sky as she turned on her lights, and a wave of dread washed over her. The rear view mirror showed nothing but sun-bleached tar and rocky hills behind her. For a pretty girl, even in the absence of men, she will never find peace, now or ever.
The familiar glow of a 7-11’s enthralled her like a moth to a flame, welcoming her back to civilization and the safety net of a crowd. The chill of a Montanan night shivered through her, arms tight on her chest as the wind whistled a soft tune. ‘No more than 20 minutes…’ She promised herself, stepping through the blast of air.
It didn’t even take 15 when she was back on the road again, tank full, bladder emptied, and switchblade thankfully still closed. Making good time, she started up her ending journey to Marburn, Montana. Never heard of it? Good. She checks the time on the dash of her car, ‘11:32 PM’ it read. It was late and late is always bad for a girl. She steps on the gas.
“How long you gon’ be here for, Sweetheart?” The extended-stay motel clerk asked as he thumbed the toothpick between his lips. The teal paint smothered the crackled walls behind him mixed with the fluorescent lights made him look greenish, hair flowing from the desk fan not escaping this effect either.
She fished for her credit card from her wallet and slid it across the counter to him, “Hopefully for a while, but let’s just say 2 weeks for now.”
Her eyes darted over his face, taking in his image just in case. His patchy stubble and tired eyes lent the appearance of a raccoon.
The man shrugged and swiped her card, a satisfying ding echoed from the machine. “$79 for the first week, then it’s $65 for the next, you got that?”
She continued to stare at him, her eyes empty and dead set on the space between his eyes, almost as if in a daze. “Yes, sir.” She whispered.
She took back her card from his hand and the small key to her room. The clock hit midnight as she tugged on her luggage into the damp and dingy motel room.
Locking the door behind her, she also closed the blinds, hanging up a tarp covering the windows as well. She hid. The room was small, with a bed, a pull-out couch, a bathroom, and a small kitchenette with a gas stove, fridge, and microwave. It was doable for the next few weeks, until she can confirm her work and boarding. That, however, was a task for the future. It all resembled a college dorm except if the student had paid extra to get a suite; she smiled just knowing she wasn’t back in that dump, but her smiled dropped into a thinned-lipped frown knowing she was never far from him.
She thought about the boxes of dishes and other necessities in the back seat of her car, debating on whether or not to risk the trip. Her fingers opened the blinds, face nearing in on the dust and eyes peaked between the plastic. Her eyes traveled to the white Chevy parked upfront, the diamond frame of her license plate peeled off. The empty voids mixed with the glittering crystals reminded her of the emptiness in beehives; some filled with honey and nectar while others were left abandoned, hollowed out as if only there to just be there. She sympathized with them as she looked away, catching sight of the innate feeling of danger.
A pair of eyes stared at her, a figure just out on the other side of the parking lot. The figure stood, hunched over a car trunk and turned backward towards her, eyes peering in like a mannequin. His face etched an image of a familiarity, a far she could never forget as he wore the faded red hoodie that she had stolen from him just months prior, laughter bubbled up in them both.
Now, even that thick, old hoodie couldn’t shield the chill than sprinted down her spine, her ears pooling with blood as her heart drummed a solid allegro in her chest. Her stomach growled. It was getting too late in the night, she thought, not worth the trip. Her fingers relaxed as she pulled herself away from the empty parking lot, only her white Chevy in front.
If there she could describe the room in one mood, unsettling would be the word. Dim, yellow lights caused all the shadows on the peeling wallpaper to enhance itself with long shadows, always looming over her seemingly small form. Despite this, she still found the warmth and comfort of tight sheets in a made bed. It wasn’t heavy like how she would remember her bed at home–or well, what was home, but it was better than the back of her car.
Sleep cradled her in its arms, rocking her to a blissful, silent slumber–which was appreciated in comparison to the long nights of sweat-drenched nightmares and paranoia. She was okay, she chanted in her head, convincing herself and the monster that is anxiety and intrusive thoughts. New environment, new life, new identity, she is truly scattered to the winds; a field of dandelions.

Lost & Found
Chapter 2 - Hotel full of idiots
Word count: 2,089
Genre: Fluff/Angst/Drama/Slight horror

Tumblr media
The sand dispear as it slowly revealed the two men amidst the grains. The scenery changed to an old fashioned when it comes to architecture city in the middle of the United States of America. Beloit wasn't the biggest town in Kansas, but it didn't matter. In fact - it made it even better, because there was less teritory to search while in the bigger towns searching would be a pain in the ass of the hunter. He despised big cities, which is ironic because he lived in one. He hated all of that noise, the people, sometimes living conditions or even the weather that tended to change quite regurarly. He blamed the baby witches is his city that created a group for spell casting and often fucked with the weather, because they had no idea what they were doing. Yet he couldn't care less, as long as it didn't affect him - why should he? The weather is also not that much of a problem to him since he didn't get out of his apartment that much when he didn't have to. Y/N stepped away from Morpheus embrace, awkwardness filling his body as he fidgeted with the bags in his hands. He looked away embarassed at the whole ordeal and turned to face the road as they were currently in a sort of an alleyway.
-Well, come on then! We should get to a hotel of some sorts - Said the hunter and started walking towards the main road.
As he was going to pass through the road, seeing as there were no cars driving on it, he was immediately pulled back by the Dream Lord by his jacket and a black Chevrolet Impala drove close by. Shock was visible on Y/N's face as he hadn't seen the car coming up. It appeared that the driver with his two passengers hadn't noticed him either before they were really close to him and he honked his horn. He raised his forearms in a slight outraged manner and an annoyed look visited his face. Both the hunter and the people in the car exchanged quick looks and went on with their days. Y/N looked back at Morpheus.
- Bloody unbelivable. What a twat, honestly!- he exclaimed.
Dream looked at him with a fond look and an amused little smile, but quickly got rid of both before the man before him could notice it. He chastised himself for letting himself feel those emotions toward the hunter again. He took few steps to stand next to Y/N and he looked at him, his face expressionless, he wanted to say something but in the end decided not to as he simply put his hand on the hunter's arm and slightly made him turn his body to face the hotel that was not so far away from where they were standing and pushed him gently to urge him to move that way. Both of them started walking over to the hotel, Morpheus during the short walk took one of the bags from the other man, yet not a word was said between them. When they finally got to the building, they saw the same blach Chevrolet Impala standing on the parking lot. Y/N made a face that was the equivalence of saying "You've got to be kidding me" and released a deep sigh before walking towards the entrance of the hotel, Morpheus right behind him. He opened the door and walked in, standing aside and holding the door for the Dream Lord, a sign of respect for the man, as he waited for him to get inside before releasing the door from his grip letting them slowly close. They walked up to the registration counter and greeted the clerk that stood behind it, at least Y/N did. The hunter gave all the needed information to the clerk and looked down the hall for a second while the man behind the counter filled in the brackets. He saw three men walking towards one of the rooms and stopping before the room that appeared to have number 65 on the door. He cursed under his nose lightly as he recognised them from earlier, the feeling of annoyance coming back to him. Morpheus sensed the change in the emotions of the hunter standing in front of him and also looked to the side, catching the quick sight of the men before they got inside their room and sighed, putting his index finger and thumb on Y/N's chin, turning his head to make him look at Morpheus. A blush appeared on the H/C haired man's face as he tried to look away and hide his face, so Dream wouldn't see his reddened cheeks.
-Stop worrying and thinking about them. We need to focus on the task on our hands, we can't be distracted by such things right now, Y/N - Morpheus said and shortly after let go the hunter's chin from his grasp, making him finally release the breath that he didn't know he was still keeping in his lungs.
The action made him slightly dizzy, he didn't expect that Morpheus would do that. He thought that after everything, any type of affection coming from the King of Dreams and Nightmares would be none existent. Apparently he had let himself do those little things that were so minor, yet so majorly affected him in the end. Y/N quickly composed himself and stood a bit straighter.
-Yeah, you're right, sorry. Won't happen again - he promised and turned back to the clerk as he tried to get his attention.
-Okay, sir, what type of room would you like? We have three rooms with one big bed left and one that has two beds. Would you and your boyfriend like the room with the big bed? - the clerk asked Y/N, looking between the two men as both of their eyes went wide and a deep blush appeared on their cheeks. The hunter quickly shook his head and started pointing at himself then to Morpheus and then again to himself, and so back and forth between them.
-Wha...? Me? And him? We... No, we aren't... You know, uh... He's not my... boyfriend, we're just... friends! Yeah! Friends... Just, the room with two beds, please - Y/N stumbled with his words, not being able to form a proper sentence because of the embarrassment engulfing his whole mind, but in the end he stuttered out his plea with a bit hanged low head, hiding his face from both the clerk and Morpheus. He could hear the little cough come out out of Dream, which only further on deepened his embarrassment. He passed a hand through his hair in a stressed manner, ruffling them a bit.
-Oh! Oh, no, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to... you know, make assumptions! I'm very sorry! Uh, a room with two beds coming right up! - The man stuttered and awkwardly started typing into his computer the information before going up to the wall behind him to search for the room key. He took one and came back quickly handind them to Y/N. - Here you go, sir! I'm so sorry, once again! And please, enjoy your stay! Your room is just down this hall! - he added and tried to busy himself with some papers to save himself from saying something stupid again.
-Yeah, uhm, thanks - The hunter took the keys, left the agreed with the employee money and started walking towards their room. The awkwardness between the two men thick in the air around them. Y/N looked down at the number at the key and saw a big, gold "66". - Oh son of a bitch... - he exhaled tiredly and shook his head.
-What is it? - Morpheus asked curiously, trying to peer over Y/N's shoulder to see what made the man react such way only to see a simple number on the key. - What is wrong? Something about the room? - he continued asking.
-Yes, kind of... Luck is on our side - Y/N said mockingly. - Just so it happens that we got a room next to the three guys from earlier... - He sighed and finally stopped in front of the doors to their room. He made a face and looked behind him just to see number "65" there. - Oh marvelous! We not only got a room next to their, it's quite literally in front of their's! Fantastic, would love to some time stand eye to eye with them - he continued his annoyed rant before putting they key into the hole and opening the doors, going quickl inside and keeping them open for Morpheus, then closing them when the man finally got inside.
Morpheus wondered why did Y/N feel so strong about the whole ordeal. Nothing really happened, so what was the problem? He didn't get his answer as he didn't ask. He decided that it didn't matter at the moment. In the room there was waiting another surprise for the two men. In fact there were too beds. What they weren't informed of was the fact that they were joined together without the real possibility of pushing one away from the other. Y/N raised his hands as if he was directing his question to Dream's brother, Destiny, wherever the hell he was.
-Why?! Why must you do this to me, huh?! - he exclaimed, slight anger in his voice at the situation they were in. After a second he calmed down and simply put down his bag by one of the beds and went up to Morpheus to take the second bag from him and place it right next to the first one.
-You know that you can take both of the beds, right? I don't need to sleep, but you do. I can simply sit in the chair or the couch and read a book - said Dream, not really seeing what the problem was.
-What? No! That would be simply rude of me! There's two of us and two beds! I know that the bed would be more of a comfortable place to read your book than the couch or the chair, so don't even suggest such things! Simply I'll take this bed and you'll take the other. It's not as if we're going to end up on one bed together somehow - Y/N explained, gesturing towards the beds, slightly enraged at the mere suggestion of the action of him taking two beds, leaving Morpheus with the uncomfortable couch and a chair.
How could Dream even say that? It felt to Y/N as if his pride and sense of respect for the other man was being attacked. Morpheus looked at the man hesitantly, before nodding, respecting his decision.
-Very well, let's start searching now - he proposed the idea to Y/N and only got a nod of agreement in return.
The hunter went up to one of his bags and bent over to open it. Morpheus blushed slightly when his eyes traveled over the man's bottom . He rapidly averted his gaze and decided to walk over to the window. Dream opened it a bit to let some fresh air and simply stood there, looking outside. Y/N unaware of his companion's previous gaze took out his laptop, journal with a pen and a portable map of American states and cities. He went to sit at the table that was next to where the Dream Lord stood, that still had a bit of a blush on his cheeks which Y/N now noticed, his eyes opened gently wider, but he said nothing ans just took a seat on the pulled out chair. He displayed his stuff in front of him and organised it. Laptop directly before him, a map behind it and the journal to the right of the device. The hunter opened up the laptop and clicked the power button turning it on. The faster he started searching for information, the faster they find the Nightmare, which in the end would come up to the fact that Y/N could finally go home and relax. It appeared to him that it was going to be a long search before he could go back though. He couldn't do anything else but sigh, shrug his shoulders and simply suck it up and do his damn job. It didn't mean that it was a pleasure to him, especially with a certain King of the Dreaming breathing down his neck. Metaphorically and literally. Oh dear god! When will he get some deserved vacation?!

while they are yet speaking
oneshot, set in s5. read on a03 partly inspired by thee midsommar scream scene. characters: cas, dean cw: nail gun used for non construction purposes
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. --Isaiah 65:24
+
Dean wipes the grease off his palms and tosses the rag aside. He can see the sweaty sheen of his jaw curving in the reflection from the Impala’s hood. He flips the socket wrench around before tossing it aside and climbing into the driver’s seat. The upholstery embraces his spine like a second skin. When he slips the key into the slot the engine practically sings hallelujah. It rumbles like a choir of one thousand ange-
It hums like a multitude of ang-
It reverberates like the throat of heavenly an-
He blinks and tries again. Tries to place himself back there: open toolbox at his feet; three p.m. sunlight soaking through the back of his flannel. Dragonflies. New brake pads. The taut rubber tiles swelling with air. The sounds of a screw squeaking as it burrows deeper into its hole. Hiding down in a tunnel where no one can reach. Not even angel-
He flicks his eyelashes up and down again. It’s getting harder to go there. Harder to ignore the fact that he’s pinned to a wall two feet off the ground. Harder to not see Castiel sitting there a few feet away, flanked by blade-wielding angels. Harder to not be reminded that Dean can’t lift a muscle to save him from being cut into by his own siblings.
The angel blade makes a soft, squelching sound as it breaks stomach muscle and tissue.
Castiel sucks in a breath sharply. He tips his chin up, eyes searching the cracks in the corrugated metal roof of the warehouse. His lips part ever so slightly. Foreign-sounding words escape in thin, half shapes of breath.
Dean doesn’t understand them. He doesn’t need to. He knows exactly what a child’s desperate plea to their father sounds like.
Zachariah moves in front of his view like a thundercloud. “Praying? If God wanted to pay you a visit, He’d have answered long ago.” The angel turns his head slightly, eyeing Dean with a hooked grin. “But then again it’s your attitude. I’ve heard that He favors the penitent.”
The angels on either side of Castiel finally step back and Zachariah leans back, hands on his hips, like a teacher proudly surveying the work of his pupils. Dean doesn’t recognize the sigil etched into Castiel’s chest. Neither does Castiel seem to know what it is. There’s confusion mingled in the carefully concealed pain in his eyes. When Zachariah deliberately traces a finger over the broken skin Castiel’s jaw tightens imperceptibly.
“What have you done to me?” he asks hoarsely.
Zachariah lifts his fingers and sniffs the blood crowning his fingertip. “You’ve got yourself so set on saving humanity. I thought it might help you to understand what these jabbering monkeys feel. This is what you’re condemning six billion people to, Castiel.”
Castiel shifts his knees, trying to pull himself into a dignified stance. With two angels still pinning his shoulders to the back of the chair he can’t even straighten himself up fully. Or lean forward far enough to spit in Zachariah’s face. Dean would sell his soul to be able to move right now and bite that smile right off the bastard’s wrinkled face.
“You can’t take my grace.” It sounds much more like a plea than Castiel probably intends it to be. “That has been forbidden for centuries.”
Zachariah laughs. It’s a short, scratchy noise. He paces in the half shadows of the room, towards the abandoned work table that’s behind Castiel. His sallow fingertips graze over the array of half assembled tools. “I don’t think your word on Heaven’s law counts for much these days.” He pauses over the bright orange handle of a nail gun. “But no, I just muted your grace. Wouldn’t want to taint the authenticity of the experience, now would we?”
Castiel tries to crane his head around to see what his superior is doing, but the angels force him to face forward. Castiel doesn’t look at Dean. His attention is fixed on the angel with the outstretched palm who’s keeping Dean in place, as if he can glare at him fiercely enough to disable the iron hold.
It’s not helpful to the current situation, or going to stop his skin from feeling like it’s being stretched right off his skeleton, but Dean somehow finds himself wondering what Castiel is thinking about. Is he imagining himself disassembling these bodies around him, bone by bone? Is he somewhere else, in a star system no human has even named yet, drifting in a field of atomic matter Dean wouldn’t understand even if he drew a diagram to explain it? Where does his mind flee for refuge when the body is under assault?
Dean goes back to Bobby's yard. Weeds brushing against his ankles. Oil sloshing in the plastic jug. The afternoon sun warming the hairs on the back of his neck. The squeak of the hinges as he pops the hood open.
Click-clack-click. His knuckles brush across a palette of brown grime and grease. Click-clack-click. The intake manifold needs to be cleaned. He feels around for the-
Click-clack-click.
He blinks. It’s coming from outside the afternoon sky. Outside the fence of his cranium and the fabrication of Sioux Falls.
Click-clack-click. Zachariah slides the last set of nails into the gun and lets the spring fly back, securing them into place. “Mind you, I don’t actually need to use this. I can hurt you in ways your little human eyes could never even perceive. But I’m feeling dramatic today.” He hefts the orange nail gun over one shoulder and straightens his suit jacket with the other hand. “I want there to be a real visual element here. Especially for our audience today,” he gestures in Dean’s direction.
Castiel doesn’t react. He doesn’t realize what Zachariah is holding.
Not until Zachariah walks over and stands in front of him.
Not until Zachariah pulls a wooden table over with just a flick of his head.
Not until Zachariah says “Put your hand on the table.”
Dean’s eyes fill with tears.
His body reacts before his mind does. Before his thoughts even form the words telling him what’s about to happen. He wants to scream and warn Castiel. He wants to throw his body over the angel and cover every inch of him like a giant tarp that shields you from the coldest and cruelest elements outside.
Castiel looks at Dean.
It feels like being slammed by a wrecking ball into his chest and all his ribs shatter. He’s being suspended and pinned halfway up a wall, paralyzed by angelic force, and it hasn’t come close to torturing him the way Castiel just looked at him. Castiel looks at Dean instinctively, the way you might stare at someone right before they let go of your hand and let you slip below the surface to drown.
Dean wants to close his eyes. An eyelid is just a few inches of skin; it’s not the miles and state lines and concrete walls that he wants to put between himself and now. But somehow right now the act of closing his eyes feels like it’s the biggest decision he’s ever made. It’s the choice between stepping into a portal that will take him far from this world and into one where nobody ever hurts the people he loves.
If he doesn’t see it, it doesn’t happen.
Zachariah doesn’t grab Castiel's arm and slam it onto the table. Doesn’t dip the nail gun down and snap the trigger back.
Castiel doesn’t lurch his entire body to one side, eyes blown wide in agony. Doesn’t try to lift his wrist off the nail embedded through the table.
Blood pours into the patterned wood of the table top. Castiel’s fingers writhe like worms.
Dean makes himself watch. He chooses to stay there. He won’t leave Castiel alone.
“Put your fingers out.” Zachariah says.
A tear slips out from Dean’s eyelids, leaving a thin smear down the length of his cheek.
Castiel curls his fingers tightly into his shaking palm. He shrinks bodily away from his superior. Zachariah snaps his fingers and suddenly Castiel’s fingers are flattened against the table, ramrod straight. Castiel makes an aborted movement with his arm, like he’s trying to pull them back, only to realize he can’t.
Castiel gaze up at Zachariah, his pale lips almost forming the o of a no.
“Why don’t you pray now--” Zachariah tips the nail gun back “--and see if God is listening.”
The next nail goes into Castiel’s thumb, splitting the fingernail in half. The third one is embedded into the second knuckle of the index finger. The fourth lands in the tender web of skin between the middle and forefinger. Spurts of blood burst out from the punctures and start crawling across the table in steady streams.
Castiel hunches his shoulders almost up to his ears. His knees are knocking into each other like pieces of pottery. His lips are clamped shut, even though his chin is wobbling. Blood is starting to ooze out from the thin line of his mouth. Dean worries that he might’ve bitten his own tongue off.
But Castiel refuses to emit a single whimper. He doesn’t spare a glance up at Zachariah. Dean understands what he’s doing, not allowing his torturer any satisfaction in the torment. Sometimes even just reclaiming something as small as your own inhales and exhales infuses you with enough willpower to endure the unspeakable.
The bronze nail heads stick out from Castiel’s fingers like headless flower stems. The white of his fingers stand out between the pour of bright blood. He’s breathing quietly, but so labored that his breath sounds solid. Falling out like rocks. Dean feels like he’s being stoned alive just listening to it.
“You can make this stop.” Zachariah drops the syllables of each word low and heavy. He circles slowly around Castiel, his bald head gleaming like a blade. “Just do what you were made to do. Stop getting ideas above your pay grade.”
Castiel turns away from the direction of his voice.
Zachariah reaches down and snags the angel’s other wrist. He slaps it onto the table and aims the muzzle of the nail gun right at the slope of the wrist bone. “Dean. Say the word.”
Dean’s tongue burns the roof of his mouth. His intestines dissolve inch by inch and then surge up his esophagus in a sickening fountain of bile. He forces himself to keep the mouthful of vomit and consent down.
Castiel flinches before the nail even cracks through his marrow.
Dean watches Castiel’s index fingernail peel off when the nail slides into the soft of the fingertip. Watches the top half of the little finger snap up when a nail thicker than its width stabs into it. Watches the pearly white of the knuckles show through the torn skin. Watches like it’s the only promise he’s ever made.
He’s not leaving Castiel, not even for a second. He’s staying there with him in every writhe and wince. He won’t look away. Not even for the length of a blink. Not even when a roaring wave of searing light engulfs the entire warehouse and he feels his own body hit the ground.
By the time Dean realizes he’s no longer being pinned to the wall by an angel, he’s already staggered halfway across the room towards Castiel. He blinks--affords himself the reprieve of a brief snippet of darkness--and recognizes his brother bent over Castiel. Sam’s mop of dark hair glitters in his watery vision like a curtain of handpicked stars.
There’s blood on Sammy’s fingers. Dean shifts his gaze from side to side and recognizes the banishing sigil on the wall near the entrance. He tastes gratitude and relief in the back of his throat, but only as a background flavor. The forefront is sweat and spit and blood from biting his own gums raw.
He reaches the chair where Castiel is still huddled in. Sam looks up, his brow furrowed.
“He told me to break the sigil”--Sam gestures to the open wounds in Castiel’s shirt “--but I don’t know what to do about the…” His eyes move half an inch. Not a full turn of the head, as if afraid to acknowledge the grisly display on the table.
“Take them out. Please.”
For a second Dean doesn’t register that Castiel is speaking. He’s never heard a voice sound so utterly mutilated before. He moves down into a crouch instinctively, putting himself on eye level with the angel. He reaches out a hand to touch him and then pauses, the skin of his palm hovering but not quite touching the cold sweat painted over Castiel’s cheeks.
“Cas….” Dean murmurs, gently, as if the very timbre of his voice might be too harsh.
Castiel’s chin is dripping in blood. His lower lip is almost chewed through, practically hanging by a thread. His front teeth are wet and red. He doesn’t look at Dean, though. His gaze is still fixed on some point in the distance, like he’s steeling for the next flood of pain.
Dean nods at Sam. His brother understands the wordless instruction and positions his fingers over the first nail.
“Cas. Look at me. Yeah, that’s it.” Castiel twists his head a little further back and makes eye contact with Sam’s ashen expression. “No, no. Don’t watch--” Dean lets his skin sink into Castiel’s as he cups his fingers around the side of his face and guides him back towards him. “Don’t watch it, Cas. That’ll only make it worse.”
He rubs a thumb softly over the tremors in the angel’s jaw. “Look at me. You don’t have to hold it in any more. Just--just scream, okay? It’ll make you feel better.”
It’s not true. It is true that when you’re screaming, you’re distracted from the horrendous squelch of your flesh being ripped apart.
Castiel stares at him, almost fearfully. Like he needs confirmation that he won’t be penalized for the act; that he won’t be taken advantage of for releasing an auditory confession of weakness.
Dean brings his other hand up to the other side of Castiel’s face. He wants to shield him, protect him from what has to happen. He’s never felt more uselessness right now, trying to build a fortress of clammy skin and wildly thumping heartbeats. “I’ll scream with you,” he breathes. “You won’t even hear yourself.”
From the corner of his eye Dean sees Sam’s fingers move. He focuses on Castiel, drinking in every drop of the angel’s terrified expression. He wishes he could drink it all down and take the suffering away. Place it back in his own body where it belongs.
All he can do is drop his jaw and scream.
At first Castiel only emits a low, strangled noise, and Dean can’t tell if that’s all the volume he has or if he’s actually startled by the sound that Dean’s just released. But when Sam pulls the second nail out Castiel bares his teeth and screams a long, crooked howl. He locks eyes with Dean. It feels like his eyes have fingers that are clutching onto his wrists for support. Every subsequent scream is louder; it erupts from a hollow deeper than the one before. Their chests heave and flatten and then rise again in sync. Saliva webs between their teeth and then drips from the edges of their lips. Castiel’s jaw bruises Dean’s palm, he’s leaning so heavily into the cradle of his hands. Their screams become longer, thicker, braided with such density that the sound practically clatters to the ground, kicking up dust in its wake.
Dean only knows that Sam yanked out the last one when Castiel’s elbows jerk back with the sudden release. His mangled hands fall into his lap. His fingers look like strips of bacon, twitching like they’re sizzling on a black stove top.
Sam pants heavily above them, swaying unsteadily from side to side. He gasps something about getting bandages from the car and disappears from Dean’s periphery.
Castiel tips forward, his forehead pushing against Dean’s cheekbone. Dean feels his breath ghost over his shirt collar; the trepidation of a slow inhale dragging across the hairs on the back of his neck.
Then Castiel lifts his chin towards the broken ceiling and screams. The line of his throat is exposed and pale. His bloodshot eyes search the above for a second before he widens his mouth and expands his chest. He screams again and again. Every sound has teeth and sharp nails. Dean feels his bones wincing in response. He folds his arms around Castiel’s shaking shoulders. He joins in the screams, too; as if it would make any difference to God that not just one, but two of His children were crying out for the smallest touch of mercy.

You want 3 shorts, you will get 3 shorts >;3c General tw for blood, body horror; these are shorts about Javier's turning
🖊 Hellbent
“Would you get off my back?! I don’t wanna hear it, man!”
Javier snarled at the figure in the passenger seat of his danube blue ‘65 Impala. He’d agreed to drive Lucas home from work, not to another lecture about Riles. As they pulled to a red light, Lucas gawked as Javier propped a cigarette between his lips and flicked a lighter.
“I thought you said you quit last year.” Lucas drawled, “Where are you even gittin’ the money for those? You couldn’t even pay yer half of rent last month.” “Seriously, dude what are you, my ma?” Javier growled in response, “Wouldn't need ‘em if you’d stop stressin’ me out so much with all the lecturin’.”
“I wouldn’t have to lecture yer ass if you’d just break up with yer crazy chick.” Lucas spat in response, “You don't drag yer ass in til dawn half the time, you stopped goin' to Mass, you miss work, and now yer smokin' again? It’s like I don’t even know you anymore, man. Whatever she's doin' wit'chu you ain't right. You need to git rid of her.”
“Lucas, I’m warnin’ you…”
The car fell into silence as the light turned green. The fuck did Lucas know about Riles anyways? He’d hated her ever since he met her. Javier took a long drag and let his breath fill the car with smoke as he eyed Lucas in the passenger seat, almost daring the man to say one more thing about Riles. Lucas glared right back. Then, without warning, he snatched the cig right out of Javier’s mouth, cranked down the window and flicked it out of the car.
“What the fu—?”
“—Stop bein’ a dick and I’ll stop treatin’ you like one.” Lucas cut in.
“If anyone’s bein’ the dick, it’s you!” Javier bellowed, “What the fuck is your problem with Riles? The real one, not the bullshit you keep makin’ up about her.”
“I ain’t makin’ up shit, Javi. I went with my gut and made some calls at work. There ain’t no Riley Reid from Tampa that matches her in the books. She’s lyin’ through her teeth, and yer eatin’ it up!”
“Yeah sure. You’re stalkin’ her records, but she’s the crazy one! Do you even hear yourself, man? Maybe you're the one that's changed.” Lucas went quiet. Javier scoffed.
“She told me you were gonna try and use some bullshit story to scare me away from her.” Javier’s voice grew cold, “Can’t you just go be happy with your fiance and leave me the fuck alone already?” “...I gave her til the end of the month to git the hell outta dodge before I call the feds.” Lucas responded, tone equally as icy, “I can’t let her ruin yer life with whatever scam she’s pullin’.”
Tires screeched on pavement as Javier swerved to a stop.
“You WHAT?!” Javier practically roared, “...Nah. Get out of the fuckin’ car.”
Lucas gave Javier a hard look, but it went ignored as Javier jerked the keys out of the ignition and stepped out in a rage. He rounded the front of the Impala and yanked the passenger door open. “I said, get out of the fuckin’ car, Lucas!” Javier yelled, “Or I’ll make you get out.”
“You can’t make me do shit, Javi.”
That was it. Javier reached in, grabbed a handful of Lucas’ blazer, and tugged him right out of his seat. He didn’t care if it was Lucas, he was gonna feed the jerk his own teeth for threatening Riles. Javier drew his fist back and swung, but Lucas banked to the right and before Javier knew what happened, Javier’s back slammed against the hood of the Impala and Lucas had an iron grip on Javier’s jacket collar. Stunned by the impact, Javier flinched and closed his eyes for a punch that never came.
“Believe it or not, I’m doin' this because I care about you, pendejo.” Lucas huffed, still holding Javier in place by two fistfuls of jacket.
“...liar.” Javier managed, “You just can’t stand the idea that I’m not the sorry little queer that needs your protection anymore. God forbid I find a woman to be happy with. What; did you think I’d never get over you?”
The grip loosened. Lucas looked down at Javier as if those words had been a switchblade to the chest. Good. Javier took the chance to shove Lucas away and got back on his feet.
“Up yours, Lucas. You can fuckin’ walk home.” Javier spat as he fixed the jacket’s popped collar, “You’re not makin’ me late to my date.” Javier slammed the passenger door shut, slid into the driver’s seat, and flipped Lucas the bird before revving the engine and peeling out, leaving the other man to choke on exhaust in the rear view mirror.
🖊 Love Me Dead
Javier felt like he was on fire. His ears were ringing, the smell of something foul assaulted his nose, he could taste an entire ashtray on his dry tongue. His fingers stung as he groped blindly along… dusty concrete?
Bleary brown eyes finally cracked open to take in his surroundings. Blood. It was all over him, old, dry, flakey blood. It was the only thing on him, he soon came to realize.
Okay, focus. Try and remember what happened…
He’d been furious when he got home. Packed a backpack for everything he’d need overnight and tossed it in the trunk of his Impala before going to meet with Riles. She’d cooed and smoothed his ruffled feathers, she’d made him forget his anger, but things got fuzzy from there.
To Javier’s surprise, his sight was the only one of his senses that wasn’t overwhelming him. He was in a basement, or at least, what once was a basement. It looked like a tornado had blown through the place. What had happened down here...?
The world around him was moving too quickly. He crashed into a wooden banister, and splintered it. He went headlong into a stack of old boxes and scattered their contents. He remembered the headache that was denting some kind of pipe. Then there was the door. Clawing and clawing at impossible speed with his bare hands like a trapped animal. Desperate. Screaming. Starving.
Javier rounded what was left of the banister up to the basement door. Deep scratch marks, highlighted with more old blood. His blood, he finally realized. In his frenzy, he’d worn his fingertips down to blood and bone. What kind of drug had he been on last ni— OhhhhHolyMotherOfGod there was a hole in his chest.
“HELP!” Javier’s lungs burned as he filled them with air to scream, “¡AYÚDAME! SOMEONE; ANYONE!”
He grabbed the doorknob. He twisted and pulled and pushed and rattled but it wouldn't budge. He pounded and pounded on the wood, first with his fists, then with his shoulders. Until finally he heard the sound of footsteps.
"LET ME OUT! I NEED A DOCTOR!"
The groan of a heavy object scraping the floor. The rattle of a chain. The sliding of a deadbolt. The twist of the doorknob. He came face to face with…
“...Riles?” Javier uttered. A wash of relief crashed into him, “Riles, thank God!”
She simply stood there, amusement growing on her lips and a folded pile of clothes in her arms.
“Ohh, Pobrecito~” Riley snickered, “Still reeling from that tantrum, I see. C’mon, let’s get you all cleaned up.”
“Riles, you gotta get me to a hospital before I bleed out!” Javier urged, unsure why she was so calm. Jovial, even.
“Baby… you’re not bleeding out. You’re already dead.”
“I’m… —Riles, c’mon, that’s not funny.”
“I’m serious. You’re dead. Although damn; did you come back swinging. What a display.”
Riley chuckled darkly, gazing him up and down with pride in her smile as she handed Javier what he now realized were his duds and jacket.
“Everything is going to be okay now.” she reached up to caress the side of his face. Anxiety and panic fluttered away as Javier practically melted into her touch, “You’re free, Baby.”
Javier found himself grinning right back at her. He wasn't entirely sure why. “Free, huh? Free from what?”
“Your miserable life. Your awful friends. Your pointless studies. Sharing the same fate as your father. You’re more than all of that now. You are the night personified. Beautiful. Eternal. Vicious.”
Riley drew Javier closer with her touch and cradled him against her neck. Something inside Javier stirred. A foreign instinct, demanding to be acknowledged. Or had it always been a part of him? He kissed her, gratefully. God, she was cold as Death.
“Go on; I know you must still be hungry.” Riley whispered as her fingers slid through the hair at the back of Javier’s head.
He was still hungry, and somehow he already knew what to do. He curled back his lip and bit sharply into her neck…
🖊 Teeth
He was met with the bright amber eyes he’d fallen in love with. His senses weren’t screaming, the hole in his chest was gone, and his fingertips were whole again. Thank God it was over.
“I must’ve been on a helluva trip if you stayed with me all night. You never do that.” Javier snorts out a laugh, “I don’t even remember what I took, pero I was loco en la cabeza last night. I was convinced we were both vampires. God; I think I even tried to bite you.”
“Oh there was no try, Baby; you did.” Riley smirked, “And we are. You just might be a little hazy on the details, seeing as you went so buck wild I had to stake you for a couple weeks.”
“Seriously, stop pullin’ my leg, Riles.”
Riley tilted her head and smiled at him in a way that didn’t need words: she was patronizing him. Then she flashed her teeth and Javier’s own smile dropped. His gaze darted to a mirror on the nearby vanity and in what felt like a blur, he was already there, rattling the furniture with an unintentional collision. Reflexively, he steadied the wobbly mirror before it could topple. The sight that greeted him was paler than ever, almost no color to his lips. The dusty eyes looking back at him were sunken and dull. He looked half-dead. Behind him, Riley giggled.
“Cool the jets, Babyfangs, there’s no fire.” she purred.
“Babyfangs?” Javier wrinkled his nose at her reflection.
Instinctively, he curled a lip and sure enough, four massive fangs protruded from his gums.
“...Madre de Dios…”
“Oh Baby… God didn’t have anything to do with this.”
Reality hit Javier like a speeding car and he staggered backwards. Cold arms caught him and snaked around his middle.
“I had to do it,” Riley insisted, “He was trying to take you away from me; look at how much he upset you. You’re better off without him. Without all of them. We’ll hit the road tonight and leave this miserable place in our dust. You trust me, right?”
“Yeah…” Javier found himself saying, almost automatically. Of course he trusted her. “I just need to tell Ma or she’ll worry.”
“Oh, I already took care of that. Your funeral was last week.”
Something hitched within him. Not his breath, not his pulse —he’d already come to realize both were long absent. No, this was something deeper, in the pit of his stomach. His poor Ma.
The arms tightened around him and cold flesh pressed against his back.
“You don’t live in their world anymore, Baby. It had to be done. They can’t come looking for you.”
“...How? What… what do they think happened to me?”
“Oh, you can read about it if you like.” Riley almost sang. She removed one hand to grab a newspaper clipping on the nightstand and handed it to Javier.
Fiery Crash Leaves One Dead And Rocks Nashville Suburb
Javier Andres Peña of Nashville, Tennessee was found dead on the side of Bell Road this morning by police after reports of smoke in the area. He was tragically killed in a vehicular accident on the evening of August 15th, when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a telephone pole. Evidence suggests he had been drinking and that a lit cigarette started the blaze that later consumed the vehicle. There was not enough left of the body to identify, but the plates on the burnt out shell of the 1965 Impala found at the scene matched a title in his name. His girlfriend, Riley Reid, reported he was meant to show up for a date that evening and never made it. Peña was 25 years old and is survived by his mother, Celestina Peña. The closed casket funeral will be on August 18th at 10pm at Our Lady Guadalupe Catholic Church. Wake to follow.
He almost choked. That pit in his stomach started to burn and boil. How… how could Riley do that… to his car. To whatever poor fuck she’d passed off as him. To Ma. To Lucas. Oh God Lucas. He felt sick. Angry.
“Baby… this was for your own good.” she whispered, “You love me, don’t you…?”
“Yeah…” Javier nodded tersely. The arms wrapped tightly around him once more. Guilt suddenly overwhelmed him.
“You trust me, don’t you…?”
“... Yeah.” What was he upset about again? He couldn't remember.
“You want to be with me forever, don’t you…?”
“Of course, Riles. Siempre.” He couldn’t have been more sure of anything in the world.
She turned Javier to face her and stood to meet him. Cradling him close to her neck again and tracing fingers through his hair.
“You’ll feel better once you’ve eaten, Baby. I promise.”
