그때는 아마 그런 분위기였던 것 같다.

약간 습하고 찐득했던 공기, 적당히 시끌벅적했던 그 날의 가게,

그리고 좀 어색하게 웃기던 너.

대화가 끊길랑 말랑 한 아슬아슬한 끝을 붙잡고 너도, 나도 무수히 많은 생각을 하며 바삐 눈동자를 굴렸겠지.

무슨 얘기가 그렇게 재밌었어? 하는 물음에 무어라 답하긴 어렵겠지만 뭐 딱히 재미 없던 대화도 없었던 것 같다.

평생에 흥미도 없던 운동 얘기를 신나서 늘어놓던 너가 조금 웃겼던 것 같다.

여름은 채 가질 않고 가을이 올랑말랑 살그랑한 날 사이에

익숙했던 사람과 새삼스럽게 그런 분위기에 빠진 게 웃기다고 해야할까.

이건 다 그 때의 분위기 때문이라고 해야할까.

뻔한 분위기가 싫어서 여기까지 왔는데 아직도 뻔한 잣대를 들이밀고 있는 나는 아직 정신을 못 차린 건가. 어쩔 수 없는 건가. 그래도 변함없는 사실은 쇄신은 언제나 중요하고, 부러지지 않는 유연함이 절실하다는 것. 더 많은 공부와 사고가 필요하다. 있는 그대로 받아들이는 것 또한.

*분위기

크리스마스 분위기를 내겠다고 집 한구석에 둘 트리와 오너먼트를 사던 때에는 무언가가 망하기라도 한 듯 허탈했었는데, 그 싸구려 트리의 가지들을 펼치고 장식하고 전구를 두르고 겨울을 보낸 뒤 접어서 보관했다가 다시 꺼내두는 일련의 과정들이 모두 내 일이 되고 난 뒤에는 필연적인 애정을 갖게 됐다. 거리를 지나다 보면 아~ 트리를 저렇게도 꾸밀 수가 있구나 싶은 것들 투성이다. 지난날 산이나 숲에서 주워 온 솔방울, 나뭇가지 정도로는 만족할 수 없게 된 지 오래인데다, 이제는 돈을 더 들여서라도 더 잘 꾸며보고 싶은 마음을 다잡느라 애쓰는 지경이 됐다.

지금껏 이런 분위기들에 냉소적이었던 이유는 간결함과 거리가 있기 때문이라고 느꼈기 때문이다. 따뜻함을 만들려는 인위적인 요소들이 넘쳐서 오히려 차갑고 무겁다고 생각했었다. 그런 분위기에 휩쓸려 사는 행태가 스스로를 불안하게 만들었었는데, 올해 12월이 되기도 전에 트리를 꺼내 설치하던 나는 이제 그런 분위기를 MSG 정도로 여기게끔 바뀌었다. 적당히 즐기면 더 다채로운 겨울이 된다. 겨울이 더 겨울다워지는데, 조금은 더 의존해도 좋을 것 같다.

사람을 볼때 그 사람의 분위기를 느끼게 된다. 좋은 사람은 분위기에서 느껴진다. 나는 내 직감을 신뢰하는 편인데, 선입견을 직관으로 착각하지 않는 연습이 필요할 것 같다. 좋은 분위기를 풍기고 같이 있을때 즐거운 사람이 되고싶다.

연말 분위기가 한창이다. 모두들 행복한 연말을 보내고 다가오는 새해에도 내게 주어진 것에 감사하며, 모든것을 수용하고 받아들이는 2024년이 됐으면 좋겠다. Flow universe. 흐름에 나를 맡기자.
