Hey. Hey, MASHblr. Are we ever gonna talk about how in the season 1 Christmas episode, Father Mulcahy very sincerely has to talk Klinger down from blowing up Frank with a grande? Because Frank tried to make him take off his bandana? Are we going to talk about that ever?

I think part of what was so entrancing about Klinger for my young queer heart was that he was always masculine. He was hairy and his voice was deep and he hung out with the boys and talked about girls and was a man and never denied or shied away from it, as he also wore frocks and spring hats and pumps and even lingerie.

The jokes surrounding his crossdressing were mostly about how everyone was like "gonna have to try harder than that to get out of the army. Try wearing mismatched hat and skirt next time" and him going "how fucking dare you insinuate I be anything less than perfectly styled in my handmade clothes you heathen." And it's saying "isn't this funny because a man who IS manly and loves women is so passionate about it? About dresses and heels and petticoats? How silly!" But it's also saying "but isn't it also silly when people care so much about it? Who's he hurting? He looks nice! he can be both. He can be everything a man is and still like wearing fashionable dresses. He isn't what you're expecting. Look at all the people helping him and complimenting him. He is one of them just the same."

And that's. Yeah that gets me, when I think about how I saw Klinger and how his portrayal influenced me and my perceptions of gender and expectations of it as a kid.

The thing about Hawkeye is that he doesn't want to be in Korea, he'd rather be anywhere else and he's not afraid to tell anyone that. but the SECOND those choppers roll in and those wounded need help, he's professional and ready to save lives.
