My travel itinerary!!

Hi, everyone! This is my first post and I'm so so so excited about it!

I'm finally able to go on my dream trip, the "backpacking" on Europe. I mean, this is a dream since I was a little girl and watched a lot of movies and tv shows where people travel the world like that, usually in sabbatical year. Finally, it's my turn!

As a person who loves organization and Canva, I had to do a map showing every city and country that I want to go.

First of all, I'm going to travel from Salvador, Brazil, to Lisboa, Portugal. Then I want to go to Porto and Pinhão, also in Portugal. The next stop will be at Spain, I'll visit Madri and Ibiza. After that, Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Paris, all in France. Thereafter, I will go to London, England, for a quickly stop. I pretend to spend a couple of days in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Then, I will enjoy the beauty of Italy, I will go to Venice, Milan, Rome and Palermo. Greece will be last country, I pretend to stay for a lot of days, enjoying Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. Finally, I will fly back home.

A rant (and a piece of advice for aspiring tourists)

Hehehe so I found the perfect excuse to rant about my biggest pet peeve regarding tourists in Greece. Thankfully, it’s a small minority but I’ve heard this before so I have the chance to address it this time.  A youtuber called Haley Pham went to Santorini and didn’t like it. Fair enough. However, she caused uproar (fortunately from everyone, not specifically Greeks) because all her arguments were stupid and indicative of her lack of basic knowledge for the place she was travelling to. 

Some say she hadn’t planned her vacation well and she also had some health issues which definitely contributed to that negative feeling but I don’t care for these, I will only discuss some misconceptions about Santorini and Greece that she and a few others have made. 

This is mostly me indulging in a favourite topic for ranting but if Greece is in your bucket list, you should probably read it. 

So here’s what she said and me dragging her:

1. Greece is impoverished, they have a financial crisis, don’t go

The moment this bloody debt crisis was officially announced in 2009, the foreign media defamed the country and its people, making it look worse than a third world country and all its people like thieves and beggars. Whoever hasn’t experienced this from the inside has no idea what a cruel and unprecedented attitude foreign media and governments held against Greeks. Being a Greek became an acceptable reason for mockery and stereotyping (is that how you treat someone with financial issues?!). Most media would also make comparisons between Ancient and Modern Greeks (because apparently Ancient Greeks never had financial issues according to them) and discourage people from travelling to that legendary Wasteland where everyone would obviously kill them for a euro (on the list of things that never happened). Touristic-wise, the propaganda was fortunately unsuccessful but I certainly don’t mean life in Greece was not affected. The salaries and the pensions were indeed cut, the unemployment went through the roof but these were not things a tourist could see. We don’t live in huts, people. (Actually, Greece has the largest percentage of people owning their houses instead of living in rent, in Europe). Anyway, Greece has been through a hard time (it’s doing sliiiiightly better now)  but this could not affect someone not living here. Besides, it is still a developed country with very high standard of living and a well known lifestyle, so I don’t understand why she said that, especially now that things are better and especially in Santorini, which is a very expensive destination. My only assumption is that she was just parroting things she had heard before in order to support her argument more. IDK. Greece faces issues but it certainly looks way less impoverished than many other countries that attract tourists as well. Besides, this is so 2011...

2. Santorini is not like in Instagram and it has no beaches and trees and things to do. 

Ok, this is really stupid and a lie. First of all, find me an Instagram picture depicting a forest in Santorini. Second, Santorini DOES have beaches but have you ever heard anybody claiming that the beaches are its main attraction? Their landscape is pretty cool but they are not what we’d call conventionally stunning beaches. What you see on Instagram about Santorini is: dark volcanic landscape, barren, with contrasting white towns perched on its cliffs. 

Stock photos of Santorini. Obvi tourists see these pictures and are like “yeah this seems to be the perfect place for my tropical palm forest island dream vacation”. A lot think like that, I am not exaggerating. I don’t know if they don’t have eyes or they just learn something is popular and head there blindly without knowing shit. 

Santorini may not be your cup of tea if you like lush green areas and pristine beaches but it is a unique, otherworldly and stunning place exactly because it is so different. It is dark, it is arid, it is a submerged volcano, that’s exactly why it’s so special and beautiful. Its towns are breathtaking and unique and exactly like what you see on Instagram. I could sign that and hold me to it. Greece is one of the honest destinations - you get what you see. Except for the crowds. Of course Santorini’s crowded. What did you expect from a world class destination?! They are all busy as hell.

As for not finding things to do. Honestly, what can I say. She apparently doesn’t like restaurants, bars, clubs, extreme sports, wineries, shops, volcano excursions, cruises, hikes, numerous museums and ANCIENT CITIES. I can’t imagine what she wanted.

3. THE WORST: SANTORINI does not have beaches and trees, don’t go to GREECE

Okay, there’s the problem. My big pet peeve. The ultimate “facepalm” phrase; “I’ve been to Santorini and / or Mykonos, Greece has no trees”. If you’ve been to Santorini and Mykonos only, then you can’t have an opinion on what Greece looks like. Greece is often mislabeled as “tiny” and since only a few islands are promoted, Greece is pictured as a very small place of a few gathered islands. There are many misconceptions here: Greece is not tiny. It is more like average-small. I mean, don’t compare it to Canada! Canada is the outlier, not Greece! It does not have a few gathered islands, it has 6000 islands that can be scattered at long distances from each other. All its 6000 islands make up a small percentage of overall land compared to the mainland. And last but not least, Santorini is a tiny. volcanic. island, one of the smallest inhabited Greek islands. You might be familiar with the most promoted Greek itinerary: Athens (2 days max) - Santorini - Mykonos. Let me show you how much of the country you get to know with this trip:

Why, that’s some itinerary. BTW, Santorini (the southmost one) is definitely exaggerated in this map. It’s smaller than that. I mean, it looks larger than  Mykonos here but in truth it is way smaller. 

So yeah, in these two neighborhoods of Athens (in 2 days), Santorini and Mykonos you got to see, there were not trees. Mykonos and Santorini belong to the same region and are both arid. Greece, like all other Mediterranean European countries, has a north and central part that is forested with a temperate climate while as you go more and more south it progressively gets more arid and hotter and dryer, maybe in Greece a little more since it is close to Egypt and the Middle East.

I’m not gonna address the “don’t go to Greece, it has no beaches” argument, I don’t think I’ve ever heard something stupider in my life. She’s the first one to ever say that, anyway.

But regarding the lush green thing, here’s my advice. Greece is a very diverse country because it is always either mountainous or broken in many islands, which creates many different microclimates and environments. Make up your mind about what it is you like in a destination and then choose a location in Greece based on these preferences of yours. And honestly stick to a few well chosen places. Don’t try to do a big tour of Greece. The map size is misleading. The mountains create surfaces, block the ways and make the roads narrower and longer. The islands can have great distances between them. It is not easy navigating Greece, neither when it’s your first time there nor at all. 

In general, keep in mind; North and West = Green, South and East = (Semi) arid with exceptions in both cases. For instance, if you really want to go either to Cyclades or to Dodecanese islands that are mostly arid but you value some lush green scenery, then you could consider Andros or Kos islands that are such exceptions.

Don’t forget that arid doesn’t mean ugly. The arid regions of Greece are the most promoted and well known ones in the country! However, if lush scenery is important to you, then just don’t blindly go to the famous islands thinking they are tropical or something. Greece is not a tropical country. It’s a European country, half of it temperate and half of it only a sea away from Sahara! Also, exactly because it’s temperate it has very distinct seasons. Both the lush and arid regions can look VERY different in spring and summer. I’ve seen comments in my posts saying “Oh it looks so green and flowery, when I was there in August the vegetation was dead”. Well, yeah, that’s the Greek August...a Killer, only second to the Greek July. 

Choose your destination carefully and you’ll be fine. Just know where and when you are going. Greece is beautiful and has pretty much everything. Except jungles. We don’t have jungles :(

Top Things To Do in Syros - a 2 to 3 days Itinerary in a Greek Paradise

This year in Greece I wanted to try something different, a bit off the beaten track so I chose an island in the Cyclades which was not the usual stop for most travelers. Usually, tourists chose the usual 5 to 10 islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, or Ios for example. That was risky, because being there in springtime, it could end up being very quiet and most things shut down. But I happen to arrive on Labor day weekend, so I arrived in Syros with all the Athenians leaving the Capital to reach one of their favorite islands. Syros is in fact one of the smallest of the Cyclades, but has the biggest population of all, making it the capital of the Cyclades. I haven't found much information online about Syros but the little I found stated a little paradise which is unspoiled by international tourists, mostly frequented by Greeks. And what a surprise. This place is stunning! The Capital, Ermoupoli is a very attractive town, its streets built with white marble and limestone, making it look like a royal palace! Its most important landmark is the Catholic Church from the 13th century, the Agios Georgios Cathedral, built on top of the picturesque town of Ano Syros, worth spending an afternoon exploring on its own! The other landmark is on the other hill, the Orthodox Anastasios tou Sereos. There are a few beaches around the eastern side of Vaporio, close to the massive Agiou Nikolau church, providing stunning views of the city and a nice place to swim.

Astoria Beach in Ermoupoli Downtown Ermoupoli is really nice, with the typical shopping street of Stamatiou Proriou and the other street right on the seafront filled with cafes and restaurants, on Akti Ethnikis Antistasis. That's where most of the action happens and where most people go to be seen. The Town hall is gorgeous with its wide main square. An absolute must, if you are lucky enough to be there while there is a representation, is to attend a concert at the Appollon theater, a very small but really well-built theater that produces some amazing acoustics. I attended a show of a famous Greek Singer called Fotini Darra, beautiful women with an incredibly powerful voice which didn't even need the microphone to push her voice through the theater. The Island is so small and packed with beautiful towns that it is a must to discover on your own wheels. In one day you can cover the whole island going at a slow pace while visiting and bathing in a dozen beaches on the way. My favorite towns around the island were Kini Beach on the west side and my number one has to be Vari Beach in the south. Kini Beach is a small town with a nice little harbor for fishing boats, and a dozen cafes and restaurants around the beach. Vari Beach is set up in a bay which provides crystal clear and very calm waters for the best place to swim on the island! They have great restaurants and a lively atmosphere! Overall, Syros has become surprisingly one of my favorite island in Greece, and I won't hesitate to recommend my fellow travelers to spend a few days on their next Cyclades trip!

Appollon theater 2-3 Day Itinerary of Syros Start the first day exploring the Capital on foot as it is much easier to roam the area walking than with a vehicle. Go straight up in the morning to Ano Syros and have breakfast in one of the cafes with a view while exploring (and getting lost in the alleys). Continue to the other hill, and get to the Orthodox Anastaseos tou Sereos before continuing to the Vaporia neighborhood with its grand villas. Go down towards the sea to visit the Agiou Nikolau church. Just nearby, have lunch at Sta Vaporia, providing an interesting menu but the highlight is especially the view off the cliff. From there you can go down the stairs and Enjoy an afternoon swim at Astoria Beach. Coming back towards the center you can do some shopping around Stamatiou Proriou and Akti Ethnikis Antistasis street and the on the evening, enjoy dinner at sunset at one of the many restaurants on the seafront. Try to catch a representation at the theater if something is on, usually on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Main square of Ano Syros On day two, rent a motorbike and go on to explore the island. Go straight to Kini Beach crossing the island from east to west. Reaching the highest point will provide great views of Ermoupoli and on the way down, stunning views of Kini Beach and the Valley. Continue east and hit Galissas Beach and then to Posidonia following the coast for amazing views and pristine blue waters. Next is Komito all the way to Mega Gialos but reserve as much time as possible for Varis Beach in the south where I found it to be the best beach for swimming. Have lunch there at one of the many restaurants and enjoy the afternoon at the beach. Coming back to the capital you can take the smaller roads around Azolimnos and around the airport if time permits. Now head north to San Michalis which has a nice valley and views of the neighboring islands on both sides and especially for the Restaurant Plakostroto which makes its own cheese. For Sunset, go back to Kini which has the best view and have dinner at one of its restaurant on the beach front. Day 3 can be spent in one of the towns for more exploring or staying in Ermoupoli for some cultural visits such as at the Archeological Museum. You can also visit the Apollo Theater if you couldn't catch a show. The Plateia Square is worth spending some time. there is also the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli which traces the shipbuilding history of Ermoupoli or you can also visit the Gallery Of The Cyclades for some local art.

Remember to book your accommodation in Greece in advance. The most common thing is that you arrive in Athens at the international flight. The first thing you will have to do is understand how to get to the center of Athens from the airport. You have 3 options: metro, bus and taxi:

Metro: You only have to buy a subway ticket and get on the blue line until the Plaza Syntagma stop (it takes about 30-40 minutes). The regular metro ticket is € 1.40.

Day 2: Athens

Lia beach, despite being a little further from the capital of Mykonos is another great option. Yes, Greece has so many islands but even so in the peak of summer all of them are bustling with life. In high season it is best to book the buses in advance, especially if they are in tourist sections such as Athens-Delphi. If you do decide to follow this itinerary keep in mind that your #1 priority is to make it easy on you and your companions and to enjoy it to the fullest. As such you’re advised to alter it in any way you find suitable. Don’t follow it blindly but instead keep its best parts and add your own preferences on top.

Italy and Greek Isles Cruise

Last month I had the opportunity to take a luxurious 10 night Italy and Greek Isles Cruise on Celebrity Cruise Lines. My husband and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and the cruise was the perfect way to celebrate. Here’s a little taste of the islands.

Going to Greece has been on my bucket list for a long time, but I couldn’t decide on which island to visit. So a cruise that stopped at several of the Greek islands sounds like the perfect solution.

The ship departed from Rome (Civitavecchia) Italy, and stopped in Sicily Italy, Valletta Malta, Mykonos Greece, Rhodes Greece, Santorini Greece, Athens Greece, and Naples Italy. 

Our ship was the beautiful Celebrity Reflection. We had a Deluxe Ocean View Stateroom with a Veranda. It’s hard for me to get completely away from work (I’m finishing up the last details of my new cookbook Instantly Sweet), so I brought along my laptop.

I loved working out on my beautiful balcony after a busy day touring the islands, and during the two relaxing days at sea.

Our first stop was Messina in Sicily. Instead of booking a tour, we took a taxi to the town of Taormina. Taormina is a quaint hilltop town with a funicular you can ride down to the beach and take a dip in the Mediterranean sea.

We shared the taxi with a cute couple we met from the UK. One of the nice things about cruising is meeting wonderful people from around the world.

Our second port was Valletta, Malta. I wasn’t familiar with Valletta before our cruise, but I was so impressed with this beautiful city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site sailing into port you could imagine the island as it was when it was built in the 16th century.

We bought a hop on hop off bus pass before leaving the ship and visited the town of Mdina, an ancient walled city with cobbled streets and medieval architecture. Then we hopped off in Valletta for lunch, shopping and a stroll around the picturesque town.

Mykonos, Greece was our third stop and one of the places I was most excited to visit. We took a private tour of the island with a group of fellow passengers from the ship.

We stopped at Agios Giannis, a small fishing port, and then Kalafatis beach. I was lounging on a beach loveseat in the picture above, just look at the color of that water!

Then we visited Ano Mera, the second main village of Mykonos, Ornos Beach, and we ended our day in Mykonos town.

Rhodes, Greece was one of the islands that wasn’t on my radar before we visited and I fell in love with it. Rhodes has an Old Town with narrow, medieval streets filled with shops and restaurants.

We’re beach people and Rhodes has lots of beaches to choose from. We visited Elli beach because it was close to Old Town and we could walk there from the port. There are lots of umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach so it’s a fun spot to relax and spend the day.

Santorini, Greece was our fifth stop. It is a volcanic island and the buildings are built into the rock. When I think of Greece, I think of Santorini with it’s stunning white buildings and blue roofed churches.

I booked the ships tour so that we could catch one of the first tenders to the island and visit the village of Oia before it got too crowded.  I longed to lounge at one of the Oia hotels with a pool over looking the sea with a good book.

Athens, Greece was our second to last stop. I was blown away by the views from the Acropolis. It is set upon a hill with 360 degree panoramic views all the way to the sea. It’s amazing to be able to walk where people walked in the fifth century BC.

There’s a beautiful new museum where you can learn all about the history of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.

Our final port was Naples, Italy. In Naples there are so many great choices for excursions. Positano, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Capri. We opted to head to the island of Capri and we fell in love with it. It’s more tropical than some of the other islands we visited – it was so green and beautiful.

We started with a visit to the town of Anacapri at the top of the island. To get there you take a bus on a crazy narrow road our tour guide called the “Mamma Mía …. Oh my God Road!” Then you take a chairlift that goes to the highest point of the island Monte Solaro which is 2000 feet above sea and has amazing views.

We spent some time shopping and had lunch on the island. Then took a boat tour around the entire island visiting the White Grotto, the Red Grotto, the Green Grotto, the natural arches and the amazing rocks formations.

We had two days at sea where we could just relax and enjoy the ship. I sign up to do Zumba one day while my husband played Bingo.

We enjoyed the great shows every night in the theater. We spent time watching karaoke, salsa dancing, and I spent some time at the spa getting a massage. There was so many fun options, or you could just spend the day relaxing pool side if you preferred.

In addition to enjoying the great meals in the main dining room. We ate at many of the specialty restaurants on the ship.

Our first night aboard, we ate at the Lawn Club Grill. The Lawn Club Grill is an open-air restaurant with a view of the sea as you’re sailing away. You can watch the chefs prepare your flatbread or even help cook your own steak on the outdoor grills.

We were seated next to two couples that met during embarkation and decided to dine together that evening. Both the gentlemen were named Mark – one Mark was from California and one was from New Jersey. When they learned that my husband’s name was also Mark, they decided we all needed to take a picture together to remember the moment.

People are always so friendly on a cruise and we enjoyed visiting with people sitting near us at meals, before the shows, or whatever fun things you’re up to on the ship.

We also dined at the Tuscan Grille, an upscale Italian restaurant one night for dinner and again on a sea day for brunch – I highly recommend both the dinner and the brunch. At The Le Petit Chef At Qsine a funny video plays on each plate on your table before each course.

We spent our anniversary at the Murano, which is the most luxurious restaurant and serves classic French dishes.

One of the ways to eat healthy on the ship was the Aqua Spa Cafe. The Aqua Spa Cafe was located in the corner of the Solarium, an adults only pool area. They served better for you fare for breakfast and lunch. Most mornings I opted for fresh fruit and half a bagel topped with peanut butter and banana, or avocado toast with eggs.

I was impressed with the wonderful meals in the main dining room. Especially the desserts. My husband and I love a great dessert, so we splurged on desserts at dinner. For the most part, we skipped the cookies, ice cream and sweet breakfast treats and ordered several desserts to try with dinner.

The desserts were beautifully plated and they had a wide variety, with something for every taste. Some of my favorites were the cherries jubilee, the Grand Marnier souffle at the Murano, and the chocolate cake with a dulce de leche filling.

The chocolate cake with a dulce de leche filling was available every night in the main dining room and I ordered it 3 nights. I plan to recreate it at home. So look for my version of their recipe soon.

The two year line

           Finally, we hit the two-year line. I said to my high school friends “hey, why not do a cruise in Italy/Greece for our 55 year?” I asked that question 3 years ago. Me and others have gone to several cruise line info nights. We have also cruised on 4 different ships in 4 different locations. There is not really a stone we have not turned over to make this a great trip.

           Why? 5 years seems like a long time. It is and it wasn’t. I began with trying to gain interest. There is interest. Then I thought that we should save for it. This trip is called the all or nothing trip. If were going then let’s do as much as we can. That takes some information and planning. My head is in a different space with a cruise than it was three years ago. We are ready.

           The booking of this cruise will happen probably this year or in the beginning of next year. I might want to wait until I have cruised on Pacific Princess in December. Plus, there will be deals. I do think that there is no huge ultimate deal. These cruise lines seem to offer the big three. It’s a discount on friends. A discount on drinks. Plus, a perk like room upgrade. Something is offered.

           As a group, we need to see what is the most important deal. The price of the cruise. Adding a flight. Some cruise lines offer flights. The discounts. The time of year seems to not matter much. I believe we will go in May/June of 2021. Right now, I am leaning towards Norwegian, Pacific Princess, and Royal Caribbean. I loved Carnival but they don’t seem to have the right itinerary. I did like Viking and Celebrity X but they are a little pricier.

           So, what does two years mean? It means be ready. We will book probably within 6 months. Plan ahead. Our itinerary looks like Rome, Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Naples, and Pisa. However, Pisa, Venice, Barcelona, and others like Sicily might factor in. We might get the best deal if we leave Pisa off the boat. What that means is traveling from Rome to Florence/Pisa before or after the cruise. It’s close, cheap, and easy by train.

           The only group thing I insist on is a jumping picture in front of the coliseum in Rome. This trip will likely begin and end in Rome. That means a picture probably the day before the cruise. I want one dinner together on the boat. Other than that, it’s your own individual trip. Now, if you stick with me you will have more fun, but that’s up to you.

           Food for thought? I have been kicking an idea around of Airbnb Rome with a house for a few couples at once. It might work or not. Tonight, begins the booking part. I will be attending a Princess cruise night. If they offered some sweet deal or itinerary, I might recommend it. They are usually a little more expensive but if the deal is right, we might even book this week. Well see though.

Crete - Estate Kares, Chania, Archanes

We avidly set off for Greece's biggest island being told constantly that it had the best food and the best people with the best hospitality. Our ferry was late into Heraklion (though we were very amused by our waiter at Santorini port as we waited for our ship) and it wasn't too bad as it is light until 930pmish as I've said before. We had decided to hire a car given Crete's size and i am so glad we did. We set off from the port in our little Celery (Suzuki Celerio with a whopping 1100cc engine) for Estate Kares that advertises itself as a hotel in a little Cretan village. Google maps had different ideas as to how to get to the Estate and we ended up on a back road with the sky darkening and our fuel light coming on. Joely jumped out at what we thought was Estate Kares only to be told that the whole area was villas under Estate Kares and the one we were looking for was up a flight of 160 stairs to our left. We schlepped it up the almost vertical steps and found the hotel. We were greeted by Georgia who was our first wonderful introduction to Cretan hospitality. She informed us that we should have kept going straight (even though the Estate Kares sign said left) towards the little town of Thillosis so I set out alone to complete the mission. It was 20 minutes in and almost dark when I was regretting leaving Joel and his 20/20 vision in the dark at the estate. Luckily it wasn't too hard to find and I ended up arriving back at the correct entrance around 930pm. Georgia prepared us a home cooked meal of spaghetti for me and stifado for Joel and we washed it down with a couple of carafes of red (in Greece it is cheaper to get a half litre of wine than 2 glasses!) We finished the meal and night with Georgia and Emanuel (the owner) around 11pm when we were shown to our apartment. It was amazing especially considering we were paying the same or more for shoebox rooms on Mykonos and Santorini. We loved the place so much that we decided to stay another night. We didn't even head out to explore, but just enjoyed the serenity of the little Cretan village after a busy 11 days on the other islands. After saying goodbye to our new Cretan friends we headed to Chania town - the ancient port town on the west coast of Crete. A brief explanation of the crazy ass driving in Crete - everyone in Greece drives at least 20kms over the speed limit while simultaneously creating a 3rd lane in the middle of the road for overtaking on double white lanes! All I can say that it was like intense rally driving with random cliffs thrown in. We stayed near Nea Chora beach at Constantino's who turned out to be a American Cretan who's personality was as big as his hair and stomach. He happily explained everything that Chania town had to offer and helped us book a walking tour of the Samaria Gorge in a few days time - Samaria Gorge is a 16km walk, one of Europe's longest which ends at the Libyan sea and requires a ferry trip and bus transfer out if you don't want to walk (sadly this never took place as we happening to come to Chania town in the middle of a heat wave! It was 40° in town so that means with the wind it can reach upwards of 50° in the canyon!) After settling in we wandered down to Nea Chora for lunch and a swim and Joel got to try wild greens for the first time (apparently the meal that kept the Cretans alive during many a war siege). He loved them. I thought it looked and tasted like soggy spinach. We had a quick dip after lunch and were attacked by those nibbling fish. That night we meandered the km or so to the old Venetian Port past the Chania Metal Festival that happened to be on while we were there. The port was absolutely amazing and beautiful. We walked all the way around and out to the lighthouse before finding a spot to dine. In the am I told Joel we were going for a drive as I wanted to see the famous pink beach of Elafonissi. We headed to the very west coast and first stopped at Falassarna Beach. We have seen some exquisite beaches in the Med and obviously are spoiled for them back home but this one was special. We just bobbed around for an hour taking it all in. We then headed south for Elafonissi and fark! I did not realise that I would be driving up and down cliff faces to get there. I'm so glad I was driving because I think if i was the passenger I would have had a panic attack. Joel absolutely loved it and it was amazing (you can see a clip on Instagram). When we reached Elafonissi after and hour or so we were met with a resounding wah wah waaaaaah. No pink sand in sight and just rubbish and lounges everywhere. It was the epitome of fucking up a naturally beautiful landscape so it has no appeal anymore. We still had a dip and then headed back the internal route to Chania. More mountain driving interspersed with quaint little villages and tunnels through rock. A truly memorable drive and day. That night we headed in early to prepare ourself for the 6am pick up for Samaria only to find it was cancelled. We didn't waste the day though as we booked onto a boat tour that took us out to Kri Kri Island for snorkelling. The snorkelling was ho hum as was the scuba diving but we met a lovely English couple and it happened to be Rachel's birthday. We decided to meet up that night somewhere for drinks. Joel and I went to a little taverna in a laneway and stupidly ate way too much food (Joel had stifado again :) and I had souvlaki). While we were sitting there we noticed that in the window next door was a dungeon like room that people were setting up as a bar. Rachel and Nathan mer us there and it turned out to be a beautiful open roof bar called Synagogi as it is inside or next to an ancient synagogue. The cocktails and music were great and we ended up out till 3am (the oldies still have it) with promises to meet up at the Pride Festival in Brighton in August. Nursing a hangover we left Chania and headed to another little village called Archanes. We stopped in at Bali in Crete just to say we'd been there and also to rehydrate. We were going to swim but were worried about the urine content of the water in the bay as there were a hundred kids. We stayed at Ahrontiko in Archanes which was a refurbished 100+ year old building. On arrival we were greeted by an old Greek Mamma with polio who didn't speak a lick of English but put me on the phone to her son who explained the details. The apartment was a 2 storey delight. I bailed the first night due to the previous nights activities but Joel wandered down to the square in search of sustenance. The big ticket item on joel's itinerary was the Nikos Kazantzakis museum - I am not a philosophy buff but it was still a great experience. On the way home we happened across a winery and figured it would be rude not to have a tasting. I managed to get down to Archanes proper that night and we had a lovely meal in the square surrounded by the local men (woman seemed to stay at home and cook all together while the gents popped out for cigarettes and ouzo). Our last day in Crete we ventured to the east of the island (much better highways so not as hairy) to Agios Nicholos. We had lunch on the beautiful ocean lake and wandered through the cobbled laneways (mainly in search of gelato to which I am now addicted). The morning of our departure we had to be at Heraklion Port by 11am to return the car and board our ferry for Rhodes. Unfortunately when we got there we eere informed that the ferry would now depart at 2pm. We decided to borrow the car again and explore some of Heraklion. We went into the old fortress on the ocean (AMAZING!) and had a lovely seaside lunch. The ferry ended up being another 30 minutes late and then didn't depart until 330pm which did not bode well for our arrival in Rhodes. I had booked a hotel with 24hr reception as we were meant to arrive at 2am. The ship was an experience in itself as it was a ship and not a ferry. We had a room with bunks and there was a lounge, a bar and a restaurant. We hit hay after many episodes of Silicon Valley (thank Al) and I had fitful dreams that were half Titanic and half rollercoaster (our room was internal and felt a bit steerage like). We ended up arriving at 730am in Rhodes! 3 and a half hours late and still swaying x

Day 1

Bodrum → Kos

After leaving the port of Bodrum, you can sail aboard the yacht for about 40 minutes to Kos, a fascinating island in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, rich in history, landscapes, and nightlife. The most picturesque places are Kardamena, with a beach bathed by emerald waters, and the beautiful Mastichari with an almost Caribbean flavor and where, from its small marina, it is possible to reach the nearby Kalymnos island, beautiful and wild.

Day 2

Kos → Patmos

It is one of the smallest islands in the Aegean Sea, mystical, barren, and sunny, which you can reach by catamaran in about 2 hours from Kos. Among the many beaches surrounding the island, there is Livadi Geranou beach, wild and sandy, with deep blue waters. Psili Ammos, to the south, has Caribbean blue water with spectacular white sand. Diakofti beach, to the north, is a small bay with extraordinarily transparent waters.

Day 3

Patmos → Mykonos

Onboard your yacht you can reach Mykonos in about 3 hours from Patmos. It is a cosmopolitan island with intense nightlife. It has 81 km of coastline: in the north, the landscape is rocky, while in the southern part the beaches are sandy. The wonderful beach of Psarou is located along the southwest coast, while Agios Sostis is remote and wild. Houlakia beach, in the north, is instead recommended for those who love nature.

Day 4

Mikonos → Paros

In the Cyclades group, Paros, 45 minutes from Mykonos, gives you the opportunity to swim in the clear waters of the beaches but is also the ideal destination for those who love water sports because of the wind blowing strong and steady. In Parikia, you can contemplate the seawater sculptures called Kolymbithres: the golden sand embroidered around the rocks and smoothed by the wind, and the sea has created incredible shapes.

Day 5

Paros → Milos

Leaving Paros early in the morning you can reach this beautiful island in about 3 hours. It has a unique charm thanks to its unusual land morphology, where the coast has been engraved in infinite inlets. Sarakiniko is a unique place with a lunar landscape where you can dive to enjoy the deep blue of the sea. Papafragas, to the north, has three small channels that run through high rocks into the sea, forming caves and arches.

Day 6

Milos → Santorini

Santorini is only 2 hours from Milos: due to its geological peculiarities, its past, and its impressive unique scenery in the Aegean Sea it differs from the rest of the Cyclades. The Caldera cliff, formed by the explosion of an ancient volcano, today results in a wonderful natural spectacle that you can observe from your yacht. The beaches are made up of dark pebbles and black sand from which you can admire the town of Oia, perched on the cliffs and wonderful at sunset.

Day 7

Santorini → Astypalea

The last stop on this itinerary is the small island of Astypalaia with crystal clear waters, located just over 2 hours from Santorini. The capital with its famous castle overlooks the windmills and makes the landscape extraordinary. You can explore its small coves with the unique beaches accessible only from the sea. The close Livadi Island, with citrus groves and vineyards, has the most beautiful beaches, cafes, and restaurants.

Day 8

Astypalea → Bodrum

Leaving Astypalaia in the morning, in 2 hours and 15 minutes, you and your catamaran will reach the Bodrum port at around 12:00.
