Fragged Empire 2e by Wade Fyer is a post-post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting where your people are just now returning to space following a century of hiding during the aftermath of a galactic war. It's a universe that leans heavily into themes of cultural tension and exploration, with a dash of transhumanism, nation-building and a hope for a better future.

Looking through The Complete Psionics Handbook (1991) before writing this made me feel like I am crazy. I remember a book that was dense, hard to parse and ultimately corny — we usually just ignored it back in the day. What I see now is just…pure potential. There is so much cool shit in this book, its like a whole different kind of D&D. I can’t help but wonder if me and my high school comrades were all idiots who didn’t know how to do anything right.
OK, so, psionics in 1E sucked. They were impossible to get, but promised mental powers that pretty much guaranteed the breaking of the game. Here, the idea is to preserve that mystique without the breakage and…I think it works? It is definitely wrapped in a new age vibe a la Time/Life’s Mysteries of the Unknown, but also a weird science fantasy thing, too. Just look at the (awesome) Terry Dykstra illustrations. How come I didn’t play THAT D&D? Why didn’t I want to explode things with my miiiiiiind?
The book IS dense, it is pretty much all rules for a brand new caster class — instead of schools or spheres, psionicists have disciplines that are made up of powerful sciences and less powerful devotions. There are limits on what kinds and how many powers a character can have, and they require skill checks to turn on. This results in characters with pretty narrow, but powerful, but slightly unreliable power sets. Which seems super fun? There are special psychic duel rules to gain quick advantage over other psionic opponents, which is pretty cool.
The approach to psychic powers in this book is apparently derived from Julian May’s four book Saga of the Pliocene Exile, which I never heard of before now but suddenly I am keen to read at least the first book…

I kind of got carried away again working on TTRPG stuff but I wanted to see how flexible this scale is. It worked out better than I expected honestly. What do you think? (also if you saw the o/g post where the astrologer had a displaced elbow shhh no you didn't)

"burnout" this, "former gifted kid" that, where are all my 2E people who fucked off throughout the entirety of K-12 because we didn't see the point and/or didn't get the chance to nurture our "gifts" because it was more urgent for the education system to address the other side of our "exceptionality" at the time and who are clawing for our chance to shine now, today, as adults?

Lolth didn't start out as a Misandrist?
Tumblr media
This might seem strange, but originally it was presented as unclear if Lolth was a misandrist, was behind the sexism in Drow society, and the misandry among Drow being itself much less severe. As stated from even late 1e AD&D article in Dragon Magazine #129 "Children of the Spider Goddess." (from which I take the main image):
Tumblr media
And indeed, the text implies Drow are still less sexist and more meritocratic and egalitarian than many other societies, species and races, while still being an evil matriarchy.
This comes back to the Dark Elves and Lolth's first appearances in "Against the Giants" module trilogy (G1: "Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" and G3: "Hall of the Fire Giant") and Drow series ("D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth", "D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa", "D3 Vault of the Drow and "Q1, Queen of the Demonweb Pits" (latter all collected into the Supermodule - "Queen of the Spiders") - were Drow Elves who worship the Elder Elemental God, still keep the matriarchal structure of their society.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These being the lore written by Gary Gygax (pretty much the creator or one of the creators of D&D)
Tumblr media
It's also further evident in the connected series of modules The "Village of Hommlet"/"The Temple of Elemental Evil", were there is a lead human male cleric of Lolth, Lareth the Beautiful.
Tumblr media
Lareth, no longer as beautiful as once
Lolth was even stated to be pissed of on whoever harms or kills Lareth:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was changed in Second Edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Lolth becoming increasingly misandrist (though even there still allowing male priests/clerics, as stated in 1991 "Drow of the Underdark" and 1998's "Demihuman Deities", specifically the latter stating 4% of Lolth Drow priesthood are male priests), though some writers tried to tone it down at least. Though only in Critical Role, Lolth is not as misandrist as in modern lore at least, calling back to her earliest characterization.
Still, I think it is interesting, seeing how the perception of Lolth in pop-culture, is different from how she started out, if due to old lore being forgotten in place of newer one, and also how R.A. Salvatore's very popular Drizzt novel series did portray Lolth as such (though even in some of his novels, till fairly recently, he did hint Lolth exaggerates/fakes how much of a misandrist she is).

Yo fellow neurodivergents, I need your all’s help for a 2e bracket
What characters would you consider to be twice exceptional? (someone who both has a developmental or learning disability and is considered gifted). The guidelines are that there needs to be tangible evidence in canon that the character is both neurodivergent and excels in one or more specialized skills. They don’t need to be canon, but more than just an “it would be neat” headcannon, you know?
I already have the ones listed below, but by myself I’m limited to media I’ve either seen or heard of. So please submit some others!
The brain (animaniacs)
Donnnie (tmnt)
Edward Teach (ofmd)
Matilda (Matilda)
Peridot (Steven Universe)
Sherlock Holmes (any version)
Twilight Sparkle (mlp)
Entrapta (she-ra)
Marcy Wu (amphibia)
Edward Wong (Cowboy bebop)
Viktor Nikiforov (yoi)

PHBR1: The Complete Fighter’s Handbook (1989) is, love it or hate it, probably the defining book of second edition AD&D in a philosophical sense. The idea here is to spice up the fighter, the least mechanically interesting character class in the roster. This is partly accomplished through new combat rules — there are fighting styles, special maneuvers, a whole new martial arts system. I don’t find these particularly interesting, but they are sturdy enough if you want some extra crunch.
More than the extra rules, PHBR1 introduces character kits. These are sort of a collection of aesthetics, roleplaying cues and perhaps a single special mechanic tweak in exchange for some sort of hindrance. In sum, at this point, they’re the illusion of variety with very little mechanical impact. Thus, the generic fighter can become a swashbuckler, a pirate, a gladiator, a cavalier and so on, without knocking the game out of balance with a billion different rules and powers. For now.
Illusion or not, kits become pretty central to the 2E experience almost immediately, which is pretty neat, because, as I said, they’re primarily packages of vibes instead of weighty mechanical options. Much of their ambiance is derived from the non-weapon proficiencies — in the main rules these were optional, but their use in defining character kits really solidified their place in the core play experience, even if, as a skill system, proficiencies are inadequate.
All of this is pretty formative, I think, to 3E, as well, where the tinkering with character builds mutate kits into prestige classes with significant mechanical impact (ironically while removing any real reason to play a fighter past prestige level). This book also lays the ground work for the tactical focus and feats of the later Players Option book that in turn is a clear prediction of 3E combat.

They Linger in the Mists
I can never resist treks through the mists.  It calls me back and I am seemingly drawn to it.  Maybe I’m just doomed, but so is everyone else.  One may as well take in the nice scenery. Author’s Note: I come up with ideas, or pull from old games, and thus write stuff.  It’s that simple.  Anyway, enjoy.  Also, while I enjoyed more evil schemes for Ivana… it just didn’t feel right.  I’m not fond of…

I'm opening my commission work back up!
If you're interested in hiring me for a project, I'd love to work with you. Here is a link to a 5e editing gig on fiverr, but you can explore my profile there for other gigs I can do. If you have larger editing or design feedback projects you'd like to hire me for, you can also send me a message here. The systems that I know best are DnD 5e and Pathfinder 2e. I can also help with independent games you might be working on.
I really look forward to working with you, and would love to help with anything you might need.

Working on an Astrologer class for w/e system we all shift to, be it Pathfinder 2e or ORC or w/e, and since I can't really do the math/stats until the move I decided to work on some concept art for them. Whatcha think?
