S. Korean Chung Hyeon suffers hard-fought loss to Federer in ATP Tour quarterfinals

SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) — South Korean tennis player Chung Hyeon has suffered a hard-fought loss to world No. 1 Roger Federer in their latest meeting.

Federer defeated the 26th-ranked Chung in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, on Thursday (local time). Chung gave Federer all he could handle in the opening set before running out of steam in the second set.

Federer has only lost three sets this year and has matched his previous best start to a season, which came in 2006, when he opened the year 16-0.

This was the first showdown between the two since the semifinals at the Australian Open in January, when Chung was forced to retire in the second set because of blisters on his foot. Federer went on to win the championship for his 20th career Grand Slam singles title.

In this meeting, Federer needed just eight minutes to go up 3-0 in the opening set. He was down 40-0 in the second game before rallying to break Chung.

But just when a rout appeared to be in the offing, the South Korean started battling back, winning the next three games to pull to a 3-3 tie.

The two traded games and were locked at 5-5, before Federer pulled away to take the set 7-5.

Federer built another 3-0 lead in the second set and didn’t let Chung creep back into the match this time, keeping the South Korean on the run with an array of outstanding shots.

Despite the loss, Chung is still having a fine season. He has reached at least the quarterfinals in five consecutive tournaments, dating back to the ASB Classic in New Zealand in January.

Chung began the year at No. 58 in the world rankings but has jumped 32 spots since, thanks in large part to his run to the semifinals at the Australian Open in January. He’s expected to climb even higher after this week. No South Korean tennis player, male or female, has ranked higher than the 21-year-old.

At 20-years old, Alexander Zverev has come under the microscope with people wondering whether he will just be another tennis prodigy whose seeming endless future winds up deflating into mediocrity or will he prove to be what Rafael Nadal predicted as "A clear possible future No. 1?" The past champions whose names line the grandstands at the Citi Open include Andre Agassi (five times), Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl. On Sunday, Alexander Zverev showed he may one day belong among such exalted company. The 20-year-old rising star from Germany picked up early breaks in each set and was never challenged on his serve in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over South African veteran Kevin Anderson on Sunday for his fourth ATP title of the year. That matches Rafael Nadal's victory total this season and trails only Roger Federer's five. The eighth-ranked Zverev dropped his opening set in Washington and had to survive a third-set tiebreaker to avoid an upset in the first round. He didn't lose a set after that opening match against Jordan Thompson and grew stronger as the tournament went on, having little trouble with the hot and humid conditions or the late nights brought on by rain delays. "I feel like the longer the tournament gets, the better I start to play," Zverev said. The title was Zverev's first of his career on an outdoor hard court and gives him momentum heading into the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 28. Anderson, 31, came in with a tournament-best 62 aces, but Zverev got enough first serves back to give himself ample break opportunities. N. Kyrgios having announced his withdrawal ahead of his QF match against Federer due to illness helped Federer reach the 10th Indian Wells Masters semi-final of his career which he played against J. Sock. Federer’s serve and shots were brutal in the first, however, late into the second he couldn’t seem to hit a first serve to save his life and he was much more conservative off the ground, probably as a side effect of missing serves and feeling inaccurate. This is a Fed norm, of course, but always a frustrating ebb. But all’s well when end’s well as Federer beats Sock 6-1, 7-6(4).

The Indian Wells 2017 All-Swiss Final was set off to a blistering start with both players holding serve until the 10th game of the first set with Federer, out in front by 5-4, a long, probing rally brought up the first breakpoint of the set, and then Federer was trying and tormenting before he got his reward: a forehand hit long, taking the set, 6-4. Not capitalizing on the advantage of serving first in the second, missed severals first serves enabling Stan to break his serve (for the first time in the tournament) to go out in front 2-0 before the champion-to-be battled back to come out victorious, equalling record five titlein Indian Wells as he registered his 90th tour-level career title.

Although there were speculations that Federer might skip Miami after big run in Indian Wells; Roger played his first match against the young, promising 19 y-o Frances Tiafoe of USA who didn’t shy away from giving Roger a fight in the match that resulted in a 7-6 6-3 win for Federer.

The strange this about his return is that even Federer himself may not have not anticipated such dominance not only over the opponent, but his own game too.

Since the start of the 2017, as of now; Federer’s only loss came from the hands of Evgeny Donskoy in Dubai.

The world couldn’t go more gaga about his newly improved, aggressive backhand return; it was only until he met Del Potro in R3 in Miami Open that Federer decided to unleash the sublime return of serve. Showing no signs yet of any wear of the busy back-to-back weeks in Indian Wells and Miami Open. Federer beat Delpo by 6-3 6-4 with which he recorded 1,095th career win, in what was a brilliant game of Tennis. It’s safe to say Federer hasn’t have his opponents dished out for him to make an impact, it’s all due to his sheer magnificence with all the hardwork paying off at the right time.

However, for the first time in a while, Federer struggled to reproduce the dominant form when he faced R. Bautista, in the QF of the Miami Open 17 where he committed 32 unforced errors perhaps it had to do with playing on consecutive days , but even that didn’t cease him from continuing his exceptional run of games as the two tie-breaks declared him the winner setting him up to play the SF against T. Berdych where Federer broken to LOVE when serving for the match in the decided, had a match point in the next game and couldn’t convert, then was down 4-6 in the breaker before winning the final four points…

he certainly lost the match twice before finally winning it. and there; game, set, match Roger Federer as he marched to SF (first time since ’11) to play N. Kyrgios. Surely, Tennis world hadn’t seen THIS coming their way either.. A three-setter with three tie-breakers in a Kyrgios vs Federer match….sounds like payback to me! After he sneak past a hit-hitting Tomas Berdych, nobody knew what to expect next; but then, Federer’s season of resurgence took another thrilling turn when he won a seesaw semifinal against Nick Kyrgios at the Miami Open, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5). Although Federer was unable to convert two match points in the second-set tiebreaker but he managed to finish off the quick, unpredictable Kyrgios an hour later in a brilliant match. Fighterer. Kyrgios seemed to have come of age for the thriller whilst Roger seemed to have rolled back the years; certainly match of the tournament that could’ve gone either way. Kyrgios’ high-wire game, including huge groundstrokes irritated Roger a fair bit but eventually he was able to persist and make most of his high-maintenance patience level that Kyrgios seemed to lack, not that he didn’t try…given the crowd who showed no mercy to him throughout. Federer marches on.

2017 – year of comebacks, anyone? Patriots in NFL, Barcelona in Champions League, Chelsea in Premier League, Roger Federer at what he does best, etc etc..

Fedal for the third time in a span of 3 months…what a time to be alive! And what better venue than the one they first met in 2004, Key Biscayne. The final score might make it seem as if Federer won with ease. He did not. Just like his rest of the matches. a well-played exchange of held serves interrupted only by Federer breaking Nadal in the eighth game of the first set and ninth game of the second, just when you figured tiebreakers might be looming..

When Nadal hit long on match point, Federer joyfully pounded the ball up into the upper deck and then lifted his arms to the sky in triumph.

As Federer goes on to claim the sunshine double; capturing his 26th ATP Tour Masters 1000. His 91st career title. The greatest ever. End off.

That, right there is as good a fairytale comeback as it can ever be. It’s astonishingly, amazingly, frustratingly pleasing to think what could’ve been had Roger had a better control of his backhand back in the day…for what it’s worth, could he have achieved more…(?) For now, I can only pray that the comeback (after a much needed break/pause continues…

Federer defeated the 26th-ranked Chung in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, on Thursday (local time). Chung gave Federer all he could handle in the opening set before running out of steam in the second set.

Federer has only lost three sets this year and has matched his previous best start to a season, which came in 2006, when he opened the year 16-0.

This was the first showdown between the two since the semifinals at the Australian Open in January, when Chung was forced to retire in the second set because of blisters on his foot. Federer went on to win the championship for his 20th career Grand Slam singles title.

In this meeting, Federer needed just eight minutes to go up 3-0 in the opening set. He was down 40-0 in the second game before rallying to break Chung.

But just when a rout appeared to be in the offing, the South Korean started battling back, winning the next three games to pull to a 3-3 tie.

The two traded games and were locked at 5-5, before Federer pulled away to take the set 7-5.

Federer built another 3-0 lead in the second set and didn’t let Chung creep back into the match this time, keeping the South Korean on the run with an array of outstanding shots.

Federer won 70 percent of his first serve points, compared with 53 percent for Chung. The Swiss great also had 12 aces — the last one on match point — while Chung didn’t have any, and Federer broke Chung’s serve four times.

Despite the loss, Chung is still having a fine season. He has a record of 15-6 this year and has reached at least the quarterfinals in five consecutive tournaments, dating back to the ASB Classic in New Zealand in January.

Chung began the year at No. 58 in the world rankings but has jumped 32 spots since, thanks in large part to his run to the semifinals at the Australian Open in January. He’s expected to climb even higher after this week. No South Korean tennis player, male or female, has ranked higher than the 21-year-old.

This was Chung’s first quarterfinal appearance at a Masters 1000 tournament. The Masters 1000 series is the third-highest tier of ATP tournaments after the four Grand Slam events and the season-ending ATP Finals. Players earn more ranking points at these events than the 500 series and the 250 series tournaments.

No South Korean tennis player, male or female, has ranked higher than the 21-year-old.
