AEP Employees Assist Community with Hydration Boxes for Seniors
Tumblr media
In a heartwarming display of corporate citizenship, American Electric Power (AEP) joined together to benefit a charitable cause. This initiative, led by the AEP team, involved assembling hydration boxes for seniors associated with the Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels is administered through Family Service, a local community senior center that serves seniors in Ohio and Marshall counties. Recognizing the critical importance of staying hydrated, especially among vulnerable populations, AEP employees volunteered to assemble specialized hydration boxes designed to meet the unique needs of seniors. The boxes include a selection of beverages that help ensure adequate hydration and promote overall well-being. The collaborative effort showcases AEP's commitment to making a positive impact beyond energy provision. By actively engaging in community service, AEP employees embody the company's values of compassion, teamwork, and social responsibility. "We are proud of our employees. They generously donated their time and energy to support our community. Our work with this effort not only addressed a vital health need but also underscores our dedication to being a responsible corporate citizen," said Erikka Storch, external affairs manager. Family Service, the recipient organization, expressed gratitude for the meaningful partnership. "The generosity and community spirit demonstrated by AEP employees are truly commendable. These hydration boxes will make a significant difference in the lives of seniors we serve, promoting their health and well-being," said Paula Calvert, Family Service CEO.This volunteer-driven project aligns with AEP's broader commitment to social responsibility and corporate citizenship. Appalachian Power has 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee (as AEP Appalachian Power). It is part of American Electric Power, which is focused on building a smarter energy infrastructure and delivering new technologies and custom energy solutions. AEP’s approximately 17,000 employees operate and maintain the nation’s largest electricity transmission system and more than 224,000 miles of distribution lines to efficiently deliver safe, reliable power to nearly 5.6 million Appalachian Power regulated customers in 11 states. AEP is also one of the nation’s largest electricity producers with approximately 31,000 megawatts of diverse generating capacity, including more than 6,900 megawatts of renewable energy. Family Service, established in 1909 in Wheeling, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing the well-being of seniors in the community. Family Service provides transportation, non-medical in-home health, wellness programs, and programs to prevent isolation. For more information on Family Service contact (304)233-2350 x110. To support their programs, donations can be made to Family Service, 2200 Main Street, Wheeling WV 26003. Read the full article

A man from Lancaster is arrested due to a crash.
Authorities said Wednesday that a man was detained for gross vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after he reportedly smashed into two other vehicles in a Lancaster three-truck incident that killed one man and badly injured a woman. At around 9 p.m. Tuesday, Lancaster Sheriff's Station deputies were called to the intersection of Avenue L at 20th Street West, where a red Chevy Silverado, a gray Subaru Forester, and a Ram 3500 pickup were stopped. The suspect, driving the Ram pickup, crashed into the back of the Forester, pushing it into the Chevy Silverado. I'm glad that he was arrested. Sometimes, some drivers are just so irresponsible. London playlist
Tumblr media
London - since 43 AD it has to be one of the more fascinating cities on Earth. Such a rich history. From Shakespeare Theatre to the music from there today. I just had to put a London playlist together. From Soho to Brixton, from Highgate to Clapham  what a collection of songs! It’s over 350 songs and it could easily expand to 400. **I have a separate England & Wales playlist coming, so, stay tuned for that**.

To play the songs, hit the link right here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-iHPcxymC1_ntP663JhZl-hvn9EwFp9L

Total deaths: 7,807 (+786)

International/General News
Eurovision is canceled. Lovers of sparkles and cheesy ballads weep in the streets.
I’m blasting ABBA in mourning and encourage you to join me
Many places are closing liquor stores, bars, and restaurants. This is very concerning for people who are dependent on alcohol as they are at high risk for withdrawal. Public health measures to mitigate this are necessary
The US-Canada border is now closed. Holy shit. Essential business is still allowed but still. Holy shit.
Cuba is working with China to test interferon-alpha as a potential therapy for the virus. Watch this space for further news.
I’m less optimistic about this one than the favipiravir I mentioned yesterday because interferons are a way less directed therapy but the trials will tell the story!
Vaccine trials continue in Seattle, United States. Authorities of the state of Washington are asking for healthy volunteers to join the trial.
Antibody trials are underway in the Netherlands.
The United States has a major shortage of testing supplies, still.
US immigration enforcement are a bunch of bastards. Still.
Italy has promoted a bunch of senior medical students to start practicing in the outpatient setting so more seasoned doctors can work in the hospitals.
As a senior medical student, this frightens me personally.
Virology Corner
Today’s question is: Why 6 feet of separation? How does that help? How is COVID-19 spread?
Let’s start with how COVID-19 is spread. It’s a respiratory virus, so it is spread by respiratory droplets, aka the garbage you breathe/cough/sneeze out.
A good hard sneeze won’t launch your eyeballs out, but it will launch nasty shit up to 6 feet away from you at a shocking speed. (This is why you should Dracula when you sneeze.)
6 feet is a great rule of thumb to keep people out of each other’s sneeze radius, so they can’t get in contact with each other’s respiratory droplets.
Regional News (if you want somewhere added just let me know. Don’t be shy!! I highly recommend you just skip to your area if you don’t wanna be overwhelmed.)

Today’s Hot Tips Make sure you know what your local area classifies as an “essential” business. They vary from place to place.
Hand Washing Song of the Day
If you hate singing happy birthday while you wash your hands, try Waterloo on for size!
Sorry Mom, I’m sad about Eurovision being canceled. You can find a different song you don’t hate.
Sing the first verse and chorus to follow CDC handwashing guidelines! Use soap and water with bad 70s-esque dancing for maximum efficacy and embarrassment of anyone stuck at home/work with you.

About this newsletter I’m Emily, I’m a 4th year med student w/ a degree in molecular biology. I started this because I’m an infectious disease and epidemiology nerd and also all my friends have questions & anxiety. Hi internet! The archive/proper website is located at coronaextranewsletter.wordpress.com. All this info is sourced from regional & national public health organizations, plus the WHO. It’s as up to date as humanly possible. I’ve been beaming information about this outbreak directly into my brain 24/7 but I still miss stuff. Please let me know if I miss something! Most public health departments stop updating their information around 4-5 PM local time on weekdays. That means that the earliest this will come out is around 6 PM Pacific time on weekdays going forward. On weekends things update more sporadically and earlier, so who knows what I’ll do then, but I’ll do my best. The excellent title is courtesy of @marywhal and the Wordpress site is courtesy of @molly0xFFF and @goblintinkerer, thank you all!

Woolworth Building

124 Old Rabbit Club

Eastwood Residence in Chicago, IL
Nov 25, 2021
Architecture: Searl Lamaster Howe Architects
Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA
Eastwood Residence
The defining characteristic of the Eastwood Residence is its contextual responsiveness. While contemporary in expression, it relates to its location in Chicago’s leafy Lincoln Square neighborhood. in a number of ways. Its scale aligns with the surrounding century-old houses. The generous front porch repeats a common detail of the block and serves as a spot to hangout and socialize with neighbors. The exterior’s board and batten siding was inspired by the wood cladding of other frame houses in the district.
While the site had many advantages, one contextual constraint was the pair of large houses that hug the property. These structures prompted the pulling of sunlight into the interior in innovative ways without compromising privacy. An exterior atrium cuts into the core of the house bringing light into what normally would be its darkest parts. The atrium footprint is evoked in a double height space that houses the staircase and it is topped with a series of skylights that flood the space with light on even the cloudiest of days.
Clerestory windows appear at multiple locations including on the west side of the kitchen where they perfectly frame the view of a large birch tree and provide a wash of light along the surface of the ceiling at sunset. A slight tinting on the south facing windows minimizes solar heat gain at the back of the house while the same tint on the street facing windows enhances privacy.
Despite the expanses of glass, the house far surpasses energy standards due to a number of features. A carefully calibrated mix of seven types of insulation optimizes thermal performance. Motorized dampers reduce energy costs and increase comfort. The neighborhood, with its direct links to public transportation, plethora of services, and its extreme walkability embraces the best aspects of urban living.
What were the key challenges? One key challenge was bringing light into the home without sacrificing privacy. This was a key issue since the neighboring houses are just feet away. Clerestory windows, a series of skylights, strategically placed conventional windows, and a central atrium were used to achieve the objective. Another key challenge was honoring the scale of the neighboring houses while allowing for extra high ceilings in the kitchen and family room. By locating these rooms at the back of the house and lowering them down 2.5’ feet from the main level, an appropriate scale for the house street side was possible.
What was the brief? We were called upon by a young active family to design a serene, casual, refined house that was responsive to its neighborhood context, unfussy, unexpected, and light filled yet private.

WHO Warns Africa to Prepare for the Worst on Coronavirus
Tumblr media
Sub-Saharan Africa has recorded its first Covid-19 death, a high-ranking politician in Burkina Faso, as the head of the World Health Organisation urged the continent to “prepare for the worst”. “Africa should wake up,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Geneva on Wednesday, pointing out that “in other countries, we have seen how the virus actually accelerates after a certain tipping point”. Africa has lagged behind the global curve for coronavirus infections and deaths but, in the past few days, has seen a significant rise in cases. Experts have repeatedly warned about the perils for the continent, given its weak health infrastructure, poverty, conflicts, poor sanitation and urban crowding. Medical authorities in the poor Sahel state of Burkina Faso announced on Wednesday that the number of infections there had risen by seven to 27 — and that one of them, a 62-year-old diabetic woman, had died overnight. The country’s main opposition party, the Union for Progress and Change (UPC), said in a statement that the victim was its lawmaker Rose-Marie Compaore, the first vice-president of the parliament. South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised economy, reported a more than one-third jump in cases, with 31 new infections, bringing its tally to 116. Nearby Zambia announced its first two confirmed cases — a couple that returned to the capital Lusaka from a 10-day holiday in France. As of Wednesday, a tally of reported cases compiled by AFP stood at more than 600 for all of Africa. Of these, 16 cases have been fatal: Six in Egypt, six in Algeria, two in Morocco, one in Sudan and one in Burkina Faso. Those figures are relatively small compared to the rest of world — the global death toll has passed 8,800 with almost 210,000 total infections. WHO chief Tedros said sub-Saharan Africa had recorded 233 infections, but warned the official numbers likely did not reflect the full picture. “Probably we have undetected cases or unreported cases,” he said. Watching from afar as disaster unfolds in Asia and Europe, some African countries have wasted little time in ordering drastic measures. Air traffic has been particularly hard hit, as many of Africa’s initial cases were detected in people who had returned from affected countries in Europe and the Middle East. Some countries, such as Somalia, Chad, Guinea-Bissau and, most recently, the island of Madagascar, have moved to stop all flights into their countries. On Wednesday, Cape Verde — a tropical archipelago off Africa’s west coast that is heavily dependent on tourism — and the continent’s most populous nation, Nigeria, joined others in banning flights from the countries most affected by coronavirus. Burkina Faso has ordered the closure of all schools and barred all public and private gatherings until the end of April. There was concern on the unusually quiet streets of the capital Ouagadougou on Wednesday. “It’s worrying what is happening with this virus, but we cannot barricade ourselves like developed countries. We lack everything here — we live day-to-day,” said bicycle seller Boureima Baguian. “We cannot, for example, close the big market. If that happens, it’s not the coronavirus that will kill us but misery and hunger.” The Democratic Republic of Congo announced similar measures as it reported its first local case, banning flights from affected countries and closing schools and universities for four weeks. South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa’s worst-hit country, has banned cruise ships from its ports. More than 1,700 people are stranded on a liner off Cape Town over fears that some have the virus. It is just the latest blow to tourism across the continent, with coronavirus fears also cancelling sporting, cultural and religious events. Christian and Muslim leaders in Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Senegal said they would suspend services to protect their faithful. A 2016 analysis by the Rand Corporation, a US think-tank, found that of the 25 countries in the world that were most vulnerable to infectious outbreaks, 22 were in Africa — the others were Afghanistan, Yemen and Haiti. The report identified a “disease hotspot belt” extending across the southern rim of the Sahara through the Sahel to the Horn of Africa, where many countries are struggling with conflicts. “Were a communicable disease to emerge within this chain of countries, it could easily spread across borders in all directions, abetted by high overall vulnerability and a string of weak national health systems along the way,” the report warned. Tedros recommended that mass gatherings be avoided, urging Africa to “cut it from the bud, expecting that the worst can happen”. “The best advice for Africa is to prepare for the worst and prepare today,” he said. 12+ Easy Weekend Getaways From Toronto
Tumblr media
Have you tired the city as well as trying to find a very easy weekend break vacation from Toronto? This guide to the best Toronto day trips details not just where to go however also points to do and also just how to get there. Let's showcase the very best Ontario and also past has to use including Niagara Falls, Hamilton as well as Blue Hill. An amazing mix of nature, society as well as obviously, a glass of wine!
Outing from Toronto
1. Toronto Island
If you have actually not taken the easy day trip to Toronto Island do it currently!
Things to do on Toronto Island
Local, as well as my friend, Maddie, advised a see to this special neighborhood during my visit to the city and the trip did not dissatisfy for 3 factors.
To start with, the surroundings. You take a fast boat ride over Lake Ontario to Toronto Island, with the skyline vanishing as the boat sails to one of the 3 stops on the island (Ward's Island, Centre Island and also Hanlan's Point).
The second factor is nature. Toronto Island is just like a big park with coastlines and attractions! You can walk at your own pace or work with a bike in Midtown and also pedal around (I cycled, really lovely thing to do).
The third factor is curiosity. Ward Island is residence to an unique community of 100 lovely old homes. The islanders claimed their residence by adding their name to a list. There was no bidding for buildings like we are normally accustomed to!
Get a bite to eat at family-owned Island Coffee shop and also admire the pier, lighthouse and also fairground on Centre Island.
Exactly how to Get to Toronto Island from Toronto
Boats leave regularly from Jack Layton Ferryboat Terminal in Toronto and the trip lasts around 20 minutes. You can buy online or at the ferry terminal.
2. Niagara Falls
By far one of the most popular day trip from Toronto needs to be Niagara Falls
Throughout your trip to Niagara Falls you are actually obtaining 3 Falls for the rate of one! From the Canada side you can get up near to the Horseshoe Falls as well as appreciate the American Falls as well as Bridal Shroud Falls over the opposite in the U.S.A.. Neat, eh?
Viewing Niagara Falls from the Canada side is cost-free as well as there is a viewing system at Table Rock Welcome Centre.
Naturally, numerous Niagara Falls visitors intend to get as near the Loss as possible and also the best method to do that is to take a boat trip. Prepare to splash!
Frequent watercrafts cruise near to the Falls which causes unpleasant hair, great deals of sound as well as free botox. Trips supply totally free ponchos but I would certainly advise wearing a waterproof jacket too.
You can still get great views yet remain dry at the Skylon Tower which is 233 meters (775 ′) high.
Linger during the night to see the Falls brightened. A preferred night task is a helicopter flight over the lit up waterfalls.
If you prepare to go into Niagara Falls by means of the American side you will certainly need your key and visa waiver.
Various other Points to do at Niagara Falls.
Although mainly concerning the Falls you can additionally dine and also consume at Niagara Falls, play games at The Terrific Canadian Midway, go to Niagara Falls History Museum and also make a dash at The Fallsview Indoor Waterpark.
Toronto to Niagara Falls: Bus, Train and also Tours
There are lots of means to reach Niagara Falls.
Both Megabus as well as Greyhound Toronto to Niagara Falls have bus courses. The journey takes under 2 hrs. Tickets can be gotten online for under $20 CAD.
By Means Of Rail Canada runs from Toronto Union Terminal to Niagara Falls Terminal. It takes simply under 3 hours and also tickets can be gotten online for under $25 CAD.
Among the fun ways to get there is to book one of the Niagara Falls tours from Toronto. This was my prefered alternative.
Why Schedule a Niagara Falls Scenic Tour?
Central pickup location.
A comfortable bus trip from Toronto.
Well-informed as well as funny tourist guide (ours was anyway).
Snack/scenery quit at the cute Niagara-on-the-Lake (get gelato!).
Ice wine sampling at one of the preferred Niagara Falls vineyards (so delicious).
Adequate time at Niagara Falls to take a boat trip and also even a helicopter ride.
3. Niagara-On-The-Lake.
Niagara-On-The-Lake is typically called the 'loveliest community in Ontario' and also truly so. This cute community has had a long past, playing home to military bases, shipbuilding industry, as well as currently a treasure of a tourist place.
Niagara-On-The-Lake.
We bought cakes as well as gelato and mooched regarding the stores nestled amongst the flowers. Niagara-On-The-Lake is a well-loved town and it shows.
Visitors can likewise enjoy Ft George as well as the Historic Society Gallery, the Shaw Celebration and also is 3 theaters, the marina and also golf course.
The community puts on many occasions during summer season such as quizzes, ghost walks and also BBQs with red wine, obviously.
If driving, head along the Niagara Parkway to Niagara Falls created "the prettiest Sunday mid-day drive in the globe" by Winston Churchill. Not driving? Think About a Niagara Falls excursion to avoid missing this breathtaking road.
Niagara-On-The-Lake Wineries.
There more than twenty wineries in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Canada's leading tourist attraction for food and drink.
Vineyards vary in size from large estates to small boutiques which adds a bit of flavour to your day trip!
First of points to try is ice red wine. This delicious sweet a glass of wine is a dessert wine produced from icy grapes.
4. Hamilton.
There might be an unlimited amount of points to do in Toronto yet the greatest aspect of Toronto arguably has to be the variety of great excursion you can take from it as well as none is far better than Hamilton.
Someday in Hamilton.
Hamilton is an up as well as coming city that offers an excellent mix of things to do. It's called the city of falls as well as with over 100 waterfalls to choose from it absolutely meets its name.
It's likewise a college community, an up and also coming foodie city and one with lots of choices for checking out the history of the location.
If you have actually just obtained a day in Hamilton you do need to dedicate part of it to nature.
Among the most prominent walkings in the area is Dundas Top. It's a 20-minute walk (each means) as much as a cliff that gives you a bird's-eye view of the location.
As it is extremely popular so you have to pay for a shuttle there now which will cost you $10/car as well as $5/person.
Right by Dundas Optimal, you'll additionally find Webster Autumn (within walking distance of each other) so make certain to inspect that out as well!
Another quick walk worth looking into is Tiffany Falls. It's a short 10-minute stroll each way from the parking lot however it is among the waterfalls you can walk right approximately which makes it a wonderful area to take some images.
When you've had your fill of nature there's a lot of other points to do in the area. The HMCS Haida National Historic Site * is a must do. It's a gigantic ship that joined World War II and the Korean War for the Canadian Navy.

5. Buffalo.
Like a phoenix metro rising from the ashes, Buffalo is turning into something lovely, as well as you won't intend to miss it.
One Day in Buffalo.
Although a field trip is hardly enough time to obtain a feel for Buffalo, it's simply sufficient to take in both things that establish Buffalo aside from lots of other cities: an industrial waterside turned playground and also incredible century-old architecture.
Beginning your day by discovering Buffalo's history. A hundred years ago, Buffalo was just one of the richest cities in America (and also it reveals!). Art deco design is simple to find downtown, as well as site visitors can take free tours inside Municipal government or hit the streets with Explore Buffalo on an inexpensive walking tour to find out more. The Frank Lloyd Wright Martin Residence is one more prime example of life in Buffalo throughout its prime time.
Afterwards, head along the river to take a look at a wonderful example of Buffalo's physical makeover. Riverworks is an old commercial website that's now a great mid-day out. You'll find an interior ropes course, roller rink, curling/ice rink (in period), as well as brewery.
On a nice day, head outside to zipline between deserted grain elevators or rock climb up the silos. Nearby there are likewise boat as well as paddleboard rentals to hit the water.
While you're in town, ensure you taste some iconic Buffalo foods.
The hen wing is most renowned as well as can be found at virtually every bar and also restaurant in the city.
A neighborhood favorite is Gabriel's Entrance, in the Allentown night life district (they have actually also got a fantastic beef on weck sandwich you will not wish to miss out on).
Other great alternatives are Roost's month-to-month rotating food selection or the locals-only group at Smoke on the Water, which although beyond town is virtually on your drive back to Toronto. Clean every little thing down with a cool drink; you'll find craft makers and distillers in the Larkin Area, an additional historical spot transformed contemporary.
Buffalo's a friendly, laidback city; just don't forget your ticket!
Just how to Get to Buffalo from Toronto.
By far, the fastest means to obtain from Toronto to Buffalo is by car. The 100-mile (160 kilometer) trip can be covered as rapid as 90 mins at the correct time of day. To cross the border, make sure your car insurance policy is valid in both Canada as well as the U.S.A..
Megabus is your next fastest choice, at a little over 2 hrs and also $15 each way, though timetables are seldom and also not for a day trip.
Greyhound as well as Amtrak are additionally public transportation choices, though they take twice as long as driving as a result of quits and also lengthy boundary hold-ups as they refine everybody onboard.

6. Blue Mountain, Ontario.
The year-round resort region of Blue Hill in Southern Georgian Bay is just one of the most effective day trips from Toronto when it pertains to landscapes as well as exterior activities.
Someday at Blue Hill.
Blue Mountain is Ontario's most popular ski area, yet springtime, summer season and fall are suitable for adventures off the inclines, as well as it's a growing destination for mountain biking. Whatever the period, stunning Blue Mountain Town is your go-to point for outing to the area, as well as it's where visitors must start their day.
This alpine-style resort town has a lot of restaurants, stores, resorts as well as coffee shops, and also there are constantly occasions taking place.
To enroll in outside tasks such as electrical bike tours or zip-lining, head to Task Central at the foot of the ski slope in the town.
If you're seeking adrenaline-pumping things to do in Blue Hill you'll be spoiled for choice with family-friendly choices such as the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, the Wind Cyclist Triple Zips or Hardwood Challenge Ropes.
As soon as you have actually tired your power, you can wander through the town and also choose from the many restaurants there. Kaytoo has a patio overlooking the breathtaking Mill Pond, while the Copper Blues normally has a great crowd. For a drink try the Northwinds Mixture Club.
There ought to still be time in the day to endeavor past the village, as well as with all this lovely nature around, it would be a pity not to.
For adults, a peaceful method to experience the richness of the surrounding woodland goes to Scandinave Medical Spa Blue Hill, a relaxing circuit of exterior swimming pools, saunas, and also relaxed lounges. ($ 65 pp.).
Just how to Get to Blue Mountain from Toronto.
The close-by Breathtaking Caves at 260 Beautiful Caves Rd is an additional special method to connect with the setting. You'll wish to spending plan a number of hrs to explore the ancient caverns, hunt areas and also 420-foot-long suspension bridge. Don't miss Ekarenniondi, a standing limestone rock that was spiritual to the Very first Nations individuals who made southern Georgian Bay their house. (Entrance from $17.50.).
Driving is the very best option to get to Blue Hill. It has to do with 2.5 hrs north of Toronto, though the roads obtain crowded on weekends and also can reduce you down. In the wintertime there is an everyday shuttle for the ski groups.

7. Wasaga Coastline to Toronto.
Wasaga Beach is an area where most citizens in the Greater Toronto Area choose a weekend vacation. It is most definitely worth the drive from Toronto and is the best location to invest a Sunday mid-day with close friends.
Eventually at Wasaga Beach.
Throughout the summer, there are lots of people that go for a fast dip in the waters or a tanning session by the shoreline.
Apart from the car parking cost and also some gas cost, Wasaga Beach is practically totally free.
Bring a beach towel, some sunscreen and a cooler packed with drinks and snacks if you plan on remaining the day.
Otherwise, you can head to Catch 22 for some fish and shellfish at $20/person or Maple Restaurant and also Smokehouse for a quick brunch at $10/person.
Just how to Reach Wasaga Coastline.
Public transport isn't the most effective option when trying to reach Wasaga.
You can get hold of a greyhound to Wasaga Beach East and also take a taxi to the major beaches.
The entire trip will take 3 hours as well as cost around $30.
The best alternative is to drive up as this will only take an hour and a fifty percent.

Manufacturing, Technology & Engineering Center
Architects: JGMA
Location: 4101 W 76th st Chicago, IL, 60652 USA
The new Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering Center (MTEC) at Daley College is an addition to the Richard J. Daley campus. The MTEC sets the framework for a wider master plan. The project unifies the existing complex by creating a campus environment with engaging pathways and collaborative spaces throughout.
Rising from the transformed parking lot, the MTEC project speaks to issues larger than architecture; it seeks to revitalize a Chicago southwest neighborhood by creating a connective message that all are significant and welcome. Daley College tasked JGMA with removing the negative stereotypes that exist in the workforce when pertaining to manufacturing careers. Often suggesting these careers as devoid of dignity and reserved typically for minority populations. The project reverses the misconception through a design focused on celebrating state-of-the-art manufacturing spaces and proves careers in this industry require tech and skills as advanced as any other.
The design strategy utilizes building transparency to showcase machines, equipment, and products integral to the learning objectives of the colleges as well as provide a visual connection to the surrounding West Lawn community. The seamless fluidity to the building’s form was inspired by the constant and linear flow of the manufacturing process. The building spans the main thoroughfare with a strong industrial bridge that links the south and north campus of Daley College.
The new building celebrates the manufacturing industry through the expression of materials such as metal panels, glass, and exposed steel. In addition, the underside of the elevated bridge is intentionally painted caution yellow, bringing the manufacturing expression to the exterior.
The transparency of the building provides a similar experience for even the casual passerby, by providing a look into the advanced technical nature of manufacturing today.
The project challenges the latent stereotypes of a community college and alters the psychology of simply crossing the street to go to class. Through dynamic spatial organizations and site responsive architecture, the MTEC provides students and staff a unique experience from the moment they walk into the building. The circulation spaces inside the building intentionally collide with seating areas, platforms, and alcoves to encourage students to congregate and participate in incidental learning between peers. There is a combination of exterior and interior terraces for users to enjoy in the warm weather months. These green areas facilitate the students’ and faculty’s interaction providing connections with nature and lead to increased cognitive function and wellness, as well as creating a more unified campus.
As the MTEC is now the front door to the campus, thorough analysis was conducted to the user experience with regards to security, wayfinding, and new learning opportunities. It was imperative that the new addition set-up a framework for further transformation of the existing building while still celebrating its current legacy. The unique exterior façade of the MTEC building is phase one in a masterplan to completely rebrand and re-clad the existing facilities to create one new energized campus.
The new building will not only be a catalyst for growth and change within City Colleges of Chicago, but also inspire the pursuit of manufacturing careers as a sophisticated and high-tech learning path.
