Speakers In The House - a new album from THE Headhunters! Mike Clark and Bill Summers carry on the name, and the sound (Ropeadope)

Few bands can boast a history as fortuitous and storied as The Headhunters. That history began back in 1973 when iconic musician Herbie Hancock formed the Headhunters - saxophonist/clarinetist Bennie Maupin, bassist Paul Jackson Jr., drummer Harvey Mason, and percussionist Bill Summers. What each member of the Headhunters brought to the table helped forge a timeless legacy and history that most bands can only dream of. Their blend of jazz with funk and rock reached millions of fans of jazz, rock, funk, and R&B alike. With over a million albums sold, the band’s legacy would inspire musicians of every genre for years to come, be sampled by various rap artists throughout the '80s and '90s, and influence countless musicians' styles of playing today. The Headhunters’ impact remains a global phenomenon, and their time with Hancock proved to be a life changing experience. The band has released 6 more full length albums including "Thrust" in 1974 with the addition of drummer Mike Clark, struck out on their own in 1975, without Hancock's involvement, on "Survival of the Fittest” and on "Straight from the Gate” in 1977. After a twenty year hiatus they reunited in 1998 with Hancock for the Verve album "Return of the Headhunters" with Clark, Jackson, and Summers performing as the Headhunters actively touring until the March 2021 passing of Jackson. In addition to original members Clark and Summers, the line up of the band consists of Chris Severin on bass, Donald Harrison on saxophone and Kyle Roussel on piano. I almost cannot believe 2022 is already ending. Part of me is so much happy with that, and another part is like "what the hell?!".

In only one year I:

- Left my former job;

- Started to work in another company as Java Developer;

- Started my post-graduation course in Tech;

- I visited my family more than 2021 and 2020;

- I went to #KnotfestBrazil (!!!) - still thrilled <3

Now I look back, and cannot regret the choices I made. I was so courageous, so brave, even with my heart full of fear, I took a step, I walked the way.

For 2023 I have more dreams, I think I will never have enough of them, ant thank God for that, these dreams keep me moving forward.

I will soon publish my next goals here to help me to remember why am I still giving my best. But, for now, I want to ask you all: did you pursue your dreams? What new dreams entered inside your mind for 2023?

Quick Lunch Meal prep:

Spinach Pasta, Chickpea pasta (high in protein), 1 can tuna, bell peppers, pickles, red onion, light mayo, pepper.

I make a big tub on Sunday and take for my lunches.

I have no idea what the nutrition is in it but should be fairly decent for protein and you can add whatever for veggies.

I want to get into making commonplace books. I just found out about it two days ago but I feel like that makes so much sense for my minds cape. All of the notes and ideas spread across Evernote, my various Notion databases, text messages and emails sent to myself and scribbles are just not...the goal. I can still have that and still do them, especially because I like far reach and spread and knowing if I lose a platform or an account I have back ups of everything I ever thought of, but having physical commonplace books for my archives of thought is a big yes.

And the day I have to put things in my time capsule(s), I will have those to give the world for later.

I firstly want to have a commonplace book for each of my ten core values:

Autonomy, Authenticity, Adaptability, Creativity, Curiosity, Connection, Community, Dignity, Discovery and Exploration.

I then want commonplace books on Value, Integrity, Love, Hate, Purpose, Desire, Violence, Life and Death.

Lastly, I want commonplace books on various systems of oppression, power structures and hegemonies/hierarchies.

One of each: Colonialism and Colonisation, Imperialism, Capitalism, Patriarchy, White Supremacy, Anti-Blackness, Anti-semitism, Anti-Indigenous, Queerphobia, Transphobia, Ableism and Sanism, Lookism and Uglification and Genocide in all its versions. I then want to bind them all together titled "The Hydra". Or maybe I'll buy just a big ass book and make them all a chapter of it.

I want my commonplace books to be part collage, part painting, part paper cut out, part paper pop up art, part essay. I want it to have so much texture and visuals and tie all the words and quotes of others with the reflections of my mind.

So, here's to another goal to add to my life!

Allison Miller & Carmen Staaf - Nearness - drums/piano duo (Sunnyside)

Miller and Staaf were originally introduced by bassist Todd Sickafoose in 2015. The two jumped right into a productive partnership, including monthly “lab sessions,” where they would meet and rehearse their new musical ideas. The two found that they had a very special improvisatory and rhythmic chemistry. Their initial discoveries were documented on their debut album together, Science Fair (Sunnyside 2018). Opportunities to work with each other continued to multiply. Miller invited Staaf to participate on an homage to Shelly Manne’s 2-3-4 album, a 1962 recording of the legendary drummer in duos with different participants. The project wasn’t completed but it left Miller hopeful for more work with Staaf. The pianist then joined Miller and violinist Jenny Scheinman in their co-led ensemble, Parlour Game, and she is instrumental to Miller’s new project, Rivers In Our Veins. While still trying to resurrect the Manne recording, Miller and Staaf reconvened for another recording session but the onset of the pandemic and the initial shock of not having played with anyone for months left the results in the can. The two did start their monthly sessions immediately, building up repertoire and revisiting ideas that they had experimented with previously. They began to focus on building their body of material but freeing it from the structure that had once defined it. They wanted music that was free to go anywhere. The pair showed up at New York’s Eastside Sound recording studio in May 2021 with a deepened approach and a beautiful Yamaha CFX piano provided by Staaf’s new sponsor. With two days to work with, Miller and Staaf tried a new approach to creating an album together: Letting go. The recording is made up of original compositions and a couple of standards. A number of the pieces emerged organically just from the act of sitting down, playing, and letting the music come together on its own while honoring melody and a sense of time, even while playing free.
