TURQUOISEDEATH - PAINT THE WORLD BLUE
(Breakcore, Atmospheric Drum and Bass, Hardcore Breaks)
Expanding on their atmospheric breakcore with noisy guitars, glossier synths and a wider variety of grooves, TURQUOISEDEATH leaves no moment lacking on PAINT THE WORLD BLUE. These six tracks are all some of their best yet and a thrilling reminder of how innovative and singular their brand of frenzied electronica is.
☆☆☆☆☆
The best thing about listening to TURQUOISEDEATH's new projects is that I can always come in with a general understanding of how it'll sound, but any specifics are beyond me: sometimes it's the most intense and euphoric atmospheric D'n'B of the year, and sometimes it's vivid neon breakcore with a delightful fluidity to it. Intense hardcore breaks and swirling synth pad layers are the foundation of their sound, but there's seemingly nowhere TURQUOISEDEATH is uncomfortable exploring with the elasticity of everything they do. With PAINT THE WORLD BLUE, they once again entirely transform their sound into something fresh and thrilling, with hints of everything from bitpop to trip hop to pure serene ambiance, embracing a wider range of electronica from the producer's native London and incorporating it into their usual breakcore madness. On its face, combinations like these seem totally nonsensical; in reality, it's absolutely perfect.
Flat out, this is the most intense and electrifying EP I've heard this entire year, TURQUOISEDEATH hitting the most experimental edges of their sound and still making it all feel effortless. Server Maintenance is where things really kick off, the track's glowing synth stabs and flashy drum breaks sending the song up into the sky before multiple countermelodies and crashing percussion sends its second half to the stars, but You're Doomed! works wonderfully as an opener with its crunchy 16-bit synths that quickly morph into an amen break and metal-adjacent guitar leads - a surprisingly fitting contrast with both genre's emphasis on intensity and speed. It's not always breakcore in the most traditional sense, what with Starfields' half-time end section à la a stadium rock jam or the chilling ethereal ambiance filling up It's Not All Your Fault second half, but by taking an alternate route to the same euphoric destinations TURQUOISEDEATH unearths a wealth of new ideas and musical pathways to follow, PAINT THE WORLD BLUE constantly on the hunt for anything and everything that could take their music even further. By letting go of a singular sound in favor of eclecticism and spontaneity, TURQUOISEDEATH has reached a level of technical precision and pure magic nobody else has in recent years.
Like the drum and bass artists of yore, the power in TURQUOISEDEATH's music is found in how they explore different ideas without trying to think about whether or not they'll work in the moment. The same way liquid funk musicians toyed with lush jazz and soul samples in a dance context or 90s ragga jungle mixed dub grooves with colorful jungle breaks, TURQUOISEDEATH looks to see what will happen if they throw a random trip hop cooldown in the middle of Rabbit Hole or a squeamish synth lead at the end of Server Maintenance, always a gamble but pulled off with such confidence and excitement that there's no possibility of it being anything but wonderful. Not that I love comparing projects to one another, but I'd be stunned if any EP this year comes close to the highs of PAINT THE WORLD BLUE: it's nothing but the best of modern electronica with forward-thinking instrumental ideas and a constant, unyielding energy. TURQUOISEDEATH's music has only gotten better with time, and PAINT THE WORLD BLUE is one of the highest highs it has reached yet - I can't wait to see what's up next.

On this day, October 12
In 2022: My Chemical Romance performed their 55th show of the 2022-2023 Swarm tour in Inglewood, California, USA. At this show, Gerard Way wore a red "black sheep" sweater (a design also worn by Princess Diana) with a black neck-scarf, and two tally marks were drawn on the drums. The majority of the songs performed at this show were from their second album, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge". (🖤)
