About Darren Criss

Since bursting onto the pop-culture landscape over a decade ago, Darren Criss has embodied the kind of kaleidoscopic artistry that’s entirely uninhibited by form or genre. The multi-hyphenates illustrious career spans television, film, music and stage.

Last year, Criss shared the Broadway stage opposite Sam Rockwell and Laurence Fishburne in “American Buffalo,” which received a Tony Award-nomination for Best Revival of a Play. He also co-hosted “The Tony Awards: Act One” with Julianne Hough. The duo kicked off their hosting duties with a rousing performance of singing and dancing to an original tune written by Criss, titled “Set The Stage.” In 2015, he returned to the stage as Hedwig in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” In the titular role, critics alike raved, including The New York Timescalling his performance “mesmerizing.” He made his Broadway debut in 2012 as J. Pierrepont Finch in “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” With Criss at the helm, the revival made just under $4 million, which proved to be the most lucrative three weeks of its 11-month run.

His portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s award-winning television series “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” was met with widespread critical acclaim, earning Criss a Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors’ Guild Award and Critics’ Choice Award. Known for playing Blaine Anderson on FOX’s global phenomenon “Glee,” he was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. He also received an Emmy Award nomination in 2015 for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song “This Time,” which appeared in the series finale.

As a singer and songwriter, Criss released his first-ever holiday album entitled “A Very Darren Crissmas” on Decca Records in 2021. In it, he brought his radiant imagination and encyclopedic musical knowledge to a wildly eclectic collection of songs: big-band standards and novelty tunes, mid-century musical numbers and modern-day folk-pop ballads. Criss’ original track “Drunk on Christmas” featuring country chart-topper Lainey Wilson, showcased his effortless ingenuity as a songwriter. The result is an essential new entry into the holiday-music canon, both thrillingly unpredictable and touched with a timeless sense of Christmas magic. Made with Ron Fair, multi-Grammy® nominee and producer of numerous GRAMMY-winning hits, “A Very Darren Crissmas” also featured special guest appearances by Adam Lambert and Evan Rachel Wood.

“A Very Darren Crissmas” was only the latest evidence of Criss’ singular gifts as a song interpreter. In 2021, he delivered a collection of character-driven singles as part of his solo EP titled “Masquerade” (BMG). In 2017, his EP “Homework” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart and in the same year, introduced his indie-pop band Computer Games. Through the years he’s also written songs for the comedy musical “Royalties,” “Central Park,” co-wrote “Starting Now” for Disney and performed by Brandy, and headlined the iHeartRadio Music Festival with Steve Aoki.

Prior to his television career, the San Francisco native pursued his acting degree at the University of Michigan. In his senior year, Criss and his friends created a Harry Potter musical parody entitled, “A Very Potter Musical” as a fun project for their classmates, friends and other Harry Potter fans. Along with starring as the boy wizard himself, Criss also lent several of his songs to be used in the show. Within weeks of posting the musical online, it became a YouTube hit, garnering millions of views and musical theater‐world attention.

Using “A Very Potter Musical” as a springboard, Criss and his writing partners started StarKid Productions. Within a year, they wrote and produced subsequent online hits like “Starship” and “A Very Potter Sequel,” both of which he wrote the music and lyrics for. As a result, the StarKid brand has grown to become just as popular as the shows themselves, spawning an enormous cult following from all over the world.

Criss and StarKid Productions appeared on the Billboard charts through four separate releases – all within the year 2012. These include the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Cast Album for “Starship,” the #19 spot on the Top Compilations chart for “A Very StarKid Album,” and the #30 spot on Billboard's Heatseekers chart with Criss’ self‐released EP “Human.”

Criss’ credits include host of ABC’s “The Queen Family Singalong,” “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” “Midway,” “Girl Most Likely,” “American Horror Story,” “Web Therapy,” and “Eastwick.” He is also the founder of New York City’s first show tunes music festival, Elsie Fest.

The Free Music Friday to beat them all is finally upon us. Happy Netlabel Day, everybody!

Serious gratitude and respect going out to Creative Commons Community Music Awards co-founder Douglas Whitfield for getting in touch with me last month to have this conversation about CC licenses, netlabels, and so much more. In part two of the interview, he talks about the CC Listening Parties that he co-hosts on YouTube alongside Donnie Ozone, an event that grew out of the artistic standstill caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In addition, he shares some ambitious plans for a CC Community Music Hall Of Fame slated to premiere in 2026.

Once again, there's great music to accompany the conversation, including a single from Headsnack that blocSonic is releasing for this year's Netlabel Day. THE OFFICIAL TAYLOR SWIFT X PHOEBE BRIDGERS DEEP DIVE/TIMELINE

— haven’t found any deep dives/timelines of phoebe & taylor’s relationship & i don’t have anything better to do soooo here’s my attempt at making a coherent timeline… feel free to correct me if i get any dates wrong! i also might have forgotten some interactions so let me know of any not included!

PART 1: 2021

— while in the process of re-recording Red, Taylor reaches out to Phoebe to ask her to join her on a vault track, which we now know as Nothing New. this is officially announced on August 6th. during the Red (Taylor’s Version) press tour, Taylor mentions reaching out to the artists, and specifically uses Phoebe as an example here @ 1:55.

— it’s also important to note that up until the recently released ‘remix’ of Snow On The Beach and the Karma remix, Phoebe was the only female artist Taylor sung a duet with. prior to Nothing New, she collaborated with 3 other female artists; but they only sung backup vocals.

— when Red (Taylor’s Version) was released, Phoebe shared this post via Instagram, which included a screenshot of Nothing New on Spotify and a fan made meme of Phoebe and Taylor. shortly after the release, a trend starts on TikTok, and Taylor participates in it, posting a video on TikTok and Instagram on November 18th, with the caption, “I cringe but I miss her. Your move @/phoebebridgers”. Phoebe responds on December 3rd via TikTok, posting a similar video with the caption, “@/taylorswift we were both young”. this is a play on the Love Story lyrics, which are seen in the background of the photo Phoebe chose for the trend.

—on Taylor’s birthday, Phoebe shares an Instagram story of her listening to invisible string, and wishes Taylor a happy birthday, saying “happy birthday king”. this comment also adds onto the idea that Taylor is the man in some of her songs (ex. being the Heartbreak Prince in MA&THP). there are no more documented interactions of the two in 2021.

PART 2: 2022

— Phoebe attends the 2022 Women in Music Billboard Awards, and is asked about her collaboration with Taylor on the carpet. She gushes about her for almost a minute (0:46-1:28) talking about loving her music & trying to respond to Taylor with the “right amount of chill”.

— there are no more 2022 interactions until Eras Tour is announced, and Phoebe is announced as an opener. Phoebe shares this post which includes two photos of them, presumably from a past event (possibly Midnights release party?).

PART 3: 2023

— at the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Phoebe presents the Innovator Award to Taylor. she gushes about her in her speech, mentioning being grateful to “have grown up in a world with her in it, or, The World (Taylor’s Version)” and how she’s helped her with songwriting. the same day, Phoebe shares a screencap from the show where she and Taylor hug. a video of them also goes viral where Taylor and Phoebe are talking, and Phoebe looks nervous, and at one point glances at Taylor’s lips.

— phoebe begins opening for Taylor’s Eras Tour on May 6th, and Taylor adds Nothing New to the set list, and the two perform it together every night Phoebe opens. they share multiple instagram posts with each other included in it. on Phoebe’s last show as an opener, Taylor wears a necklace from Phoebe’s collaboration with Catbird! she points it out to Phoebe when she joins her on stage one last time, and the two gush about each other, with Phoebe calling her her hero. later in the song, Taylor is seen looking Phoebe up and down longingly, and licking her lips. after the show, Taylor posts for the tour stop as usual, but shouts out Phoebe, saying, “@/phoebebridgers, I’ll miss you out here my dude, thanks for the duets and the dressing room heart to hearts”. gaylor fans speculate they weren’t just having heart to hearts, and are/were romantically involved.

— on June 26, Taylor is spotted in NYC wearing the necklace again (i believe the only other times she’s reworn jewelry is the ‘J’ necklace and the VS angels ring; i could be wrong though). she also wears daisy socks, which could be a nod to her past relationship with Karlie Kloss.

— on October 27th, Phoebe posts Slut! (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault) to her instagram story.

— on November 3rd, the pair are spotted leaving a building together.

BTS and the Power of Music: Breaking Barriers and Spreading Love

BTS, also known as Bangatan Sonyeodan is the biggest boyband in the world (according to the economist.com) and debuted under the HYBE LABELS. They started from humble beginnings. They once begged people to go to their concerts and lived in a small dorm which did not fit all of them. But now all their concert tickets just get sold out at a blink of an eye. And their fans have been mentioning them paving the way of their life and the K-pop industry when it was at its worst. Their 40 million fans loved them because of their music which gives them inspiration, motivation and loving themselves is a must in the fandom. In Fact, they have released an album dedicated to loving yourself (Love Yourself: Answer) on the 24th of August, 2018.

BTS released their first Korean and Japanese-language studio albums, Dark & Wild and Wake Up respectively, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea.

Jin is the hyung of BTS (the oldest). Meaning he has to take care of his younger members since they’re very far away from their family due to their training. His younger members were raised by him for more than a decade! And I do think that they were raised right by their Jin hyung with all their awards and recognitions they still have been very humble about it.

He is a songwriter and the vocalist of the group. Jin has co-written and released three solo tracks with BTS: "Awake" in 2016, "Epiphany" in 2018, and "Moon" in 2020, all of which have charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart

For now, Jin is serving his country as a military personnel with Hoseok.

Min Yoongi (Suga)

The lead rapper of the group came from a financially unstable family in Daegu. But due to his hard work he is now part of the Biggest Boy Band in The World and the global ambassador for Valentino. He used to work as a delivery boy in his teenage years. While working as a delivery boy he had a major injury which caused him to have surgery. He's been battling with mental illness for the past years. His fans and group members were a big help to him to overcome it.

Suga has also collabed with big time singers, like PSY, IU, Halsey and many more.

Jung Hoseok (J-hope)

The third hyung in the group. He is the ambassador of Louis Vuitton all because of his great fashion sense. Before debuting with BTS, J-Hope was part of an underground dance team called Neuron, and took dance classes at Gwangju Music Academy for six years, from fourth grade to his first year in high school when he signed with Big Hit Entertainment.[He was relatively well known for his dance skills, and won various local prizes, including first place in a national dance competition in 2008.

In 2019, J-Hope released a free collaboration single, "Chicken Noodle Soup", featuring American singer Becky G, on September 27.The track debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making J-Hope the first member of BTS to chart on the Hot 100 as a solo artist, the third Korean solo artist to rank on the chart , and the sixth Korean artist overall to do so. "Chicken Noodle Soup" also became J-Hope's second song to debut at number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart. And now, he is currently serving Korea as a soldier.

Kim Namjoon (RM)

RM, is the leader and the main rapper of the group. He is called the Backbone of K-pop, since he was the main reason why it was popular and why the group BTS exists which contributed a lot to the Korean economy. Namjoon, is the only BTS member to be fluent in english which is a big help to them when they go to foreign countries. As a child, RM largely learned English by watching the American sitcom Friends with his mother. As a student, he actively wrote poetry and often received awards for his writing. He posted his work to an online poetry website for roughly one year, where he received moderate attention. He also has an iq of 148.

RM is the youngest and second most-credited songwriter in the association's history. With 213 songs attributed to his name as a songwriter and composer by the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), as of April 2023.

Park Jimin (Jimin)

Jimin’s passion for dancing started at an early age. When he was in high school he learned contemporary dancing as a top student from Busan High School of Arts. Seeing his talent, one of his teachers suggested that he should audition for an entertainment company. With his talent, he successfully made it to Bighit. And now he has a networth of $8 million plus his collaboration with Dior which is $17 million. And a little fun fact is that Jimin is always teased by his younger member Jungkook because of his height. (174 cm)

Jimin's vocals have been described as delicate and sweet. He is regarded as an exceptional dancer among the members of BTS and in K-pop in general, often praised for his "smooth and elegant movements" and charm on stage. In the documentary Burn the Stage, Jimin addressed his perfectionism, stating that even the smallest mistakes on stage make him feel guilty and stressed.

Kim Taehyung (V)

V, also known as Taehyung, first aspired to be a professional singer in elementary school. With his father's support, he began taking saxophone lessons in early middle school as a means of pursuing a musical career. V eventually became a trainee for Big Hit Entertainment after passing an audition in Daegu. He never actually intended to audition, he was just there to support his friend but I guess he was too good.

Jeon Jungkook (JK)

The moment Jungkook saw Namjoon’s audition video for Bighit he knew he had to join. Jungkook is said to be Namjoon’s #1 Fan and joined the auditions because of him. Jungkook is the maknae of the group meaning he is the youngest and left his home for his dreams to become a superstar. And with that he now has an astonishing net worth of 20 million US dollars and is the ambassador of Calvin Klein.

The group's success can be attributed to their unique sound, relatable lyrics, and dedicated fanbase known as ARMY (Adorable Representative MC for Youth). BTS fans have played a significant role in the group's success, and here are a few ways in which they have helped BTS:

Summer Marjani Walker (born April 11, 1996) is a R&B singer. She signed with Love Renaissance, an imprint of Interscope Records in late 2017. She released her debut commercial mixtape Last Day of Summer (2018), supported by its lead single, “Girls Need Love.” The song became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and spawned a remix featuring Canadian rapper Drake. Her debut studio album, Over It (2019) peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart—briefly breaking the record for the biggest debut streaming week for a female R&B artist—and receiving double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Her second album, Still Over It (2021) debuted atop the Billboard 200. The album broke the record for most streams in a single day by a female artist on Apple Music and broke her previous record for the largest streaming debut week for a female R&B artist. It spawned the single “Ex for a Reason” which peaked within the top 40 of the BillboardHot 100, while its follow-up single, “No Love” peaked within the top 15 and received platinum certification by the RIAA. Her 2023 single, “Good Good” entered the top 40 of the chart.

Her accolades include a Billboard Music Award, an IHeartRadio Music Award two Soul Train Music Awards, and two Grammy Award nominations. In 2022 Billboard Women in Music recognized her with the Chart Breaker Award for her achievement on Billboard charts. As of 2024, she has sold over 32 million certified units from the RIAA between albums and songs.

She was born in Atlanta. She had a small cleaning business and was a stripper in Atlanta before she taught herself how to play the guitar by watching tutorials on YouTube. Soon after, she began performing covers and posting various videos of herself on the platform.

She has well over 24 tattoos as of 2019.
