Setting the Record straight on 90/2000’s culture was like as told by a person who lived it.
Much like with the 90’s people misinterpret what 2000’s culture was like. Everyone assumes 90’s culture was essentially 80’s culture. When the 90’s hit grunge and metal were hitting their stride. Plaid was in style, baggy clothes and torn clothes were cool, even better if they had patches even comics got edgier around this time.
That would evolve further once we reached 2000’s where Goth culture took off. Their became what I think of as a splinter group of people still with that edge but on the opposite side of that coin. Rave music, dubstep, and famously Nightcore, which also morphed into an obsession with Eurobeat. Clothes also moved in a similar route. Mixing really bright colors in with the black to make it both colorful and dark at the same time, also skinny jeans and frosted tips were popular. Also for some reason this was the point in time where the Invader Zim fanbase was at its peak and we were resilient, still are I suppose. Also Nightmare Before Christmas. Both things are a good reference point to where the younger crowd was in terms of the quirky to edgy ratio. With memes of the “can i haz cheezburger” variety. Also Anime and later Vocaloid had a really strong sub culture.
Speaking of anime in the 2000’s for a reason they also got hit hard with the edge and quirkiness of the times, however they were REALLY in to Christian imagery at the time. Random Crosses everywhere, an Angel or Angel adjacent type of character, Nuns with guns and sometimes even Priests with Guns. There had to be a fight inside a Gothic architectured Catholic Church. That was the style at the time.
