Rob is a tired dad with an inferiority complex. He doesn't put much effort into his appearance because basic hygiene already saps a lot of his energy. He has reddish-brown hair that he keeps short for convenience and doesn't shave as often as he should, so there's always a thin layer of stubble. I picture him to be around 33 but stress makes him look older. He usually wears the same basic t-shirts and cargo pants—a polo would be fancy for him. He's on the underweight side because he frequently skips meals so his kids and Milo have enough. He also has random tattoos scattered over his arms plus one on his leg and neck. They don't mean anything, just dumb stuff he got when he was younger, including a winking emoticon and the Pillsbury doughboy.

Blaise is 26 and you can tell he's a stoner from the get-go. He has dirty blonde hair that he grows out but hardly maintains, and the same level of effort goes for his clothes. He often wears things he finds in dumpsters or thrift stores and chooses comfort over style. His clothes have lots of hidden pockets for lighters, firecrackers, and weapons. He's tall and lanky, which makes living out of Milo's car in the parking lot awkward (Rob offered his apartment but he declined). Similar to Rob, Blaise also has a number of meaningless tattoos plus several piercings. He also plays the guitar and keeps his lucky pick on a necklace.

Kellin is a 20-year-old originally hailing from Thailand. Their assassin parents trained them in gymnastics, martial arts, and various weaponry from a young age in hopes that Kellin would follow in the family's footsteps and join the League of Assassins. That obviously didn't work out and they traveled around as an independent hitman (hitperson?) for a couple years before they landed in Gotham. They're always battle-ready—if they could shower in their assassin uniform they would. They changed their name and keep their hair just long enough to mask their face. They're fluent in English, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Arabic, but they prefer to let their actions speak for them instead.

Molly is a 25-year-old trans woman who incorporates her jobs as a drug dealer, team strategist, and nightclub DJ in a single look. She has long dark hair dyed with neon streaks but ties it up when fighting. She's not the most formidable combatant but she has basic fighting skills and is very calculative. Her primary weapon is a metal baseball bat, inspired by her favorite anti-hero, Harley Quinn. She also has a belt equipped with her experimental chemicals and smoke pellets. However, she's not allowed to pair up with Blaise on missions because it's an open secret that the two of them can't focus around each other.

Otto is a war veteran and car mechanic around the same age as Alfred, but that's where the similarities end. He's been wearing the same mechanic's uniform for the past four decades, the only differences between then and now being his hair thinning, a couple front teeth falling out, and acquiring a beer gut. His arms are covered in scabs and scars from the job and he's had trouble with his right knee ever since the army. On the surface he seems like a Boomer yelling at kids to get off his lawn, but he's more like a stern but well-intentioned grandpa who is disappointed to see nothing much has changed over the years.

Milo is your standard 15-year-old delinquent. He's slightly small for his age and doesn't pack that big of a punch on his own, but put him behind the wheel and he's a total menace. When he's not driving, he keeps himself stimulated with video games or his collection of keychains (his favorite is purple bat because of his puppy crush on Spoiler). His look is reminiscent of early 2000s skater punks, including a bright red mohawk and his trusty headphones. Everything he owns, minus his car, fits into a single backpack. His weapon, on the rare occasion Rob lets him on the front line, is a batarang he found on the street.

Gene is someone you would never expect to have so many issues because on the outside he looks like an average 40-year-old glasses-wearing office worker. He has short sandy hair and dark circles under his eyes from nightmares. His meds help a lot, but sometimes he's still seen pacing around and muttering to himself. He's not a danger anymore compared to the past, which is why Rob trusts him enough to share an apartment. Gene focuses his nervous energy into his research and tinkering instead, amassing a comedic collection of hyperspecific gadgets.

Mac is basically the guy in the chair. He's 30 and has thick glasses, thick curly brown hair, a thin goatee, and almost exclusively wears flannel. His nails are down to a nub because he bites them when concentrating. He's also often seen with chips or an energy drink in his hands and wears a jailbroken smart watch. Of the team, he has the least physical prowess but the most brain power. He doesn't see combat often but keeps a pistol in case. He turned an old ice cream truck into his home/mobile office so he can plug in anywhere. Like Kellin, he's also not from Gotham, but instead Fawcett City and has a distinct Minnesota accent.

Booker is a 19-year-old Gotham U student and the third member of the team's Glasses Trio. He's an intelligent guy slated to graduate a year early and thus needs his internship credits sooner. He's very polite (albeit a little socially awkward) and puts his best foot forward by coming into work with slacks and fun patterned suspenders even though he doesn't have to. His hair has a slightly uneven fade because his sister insisted on practicing on him for cosmetology school, so he covers it with a fedora. He carries his things in a laptop bag and has an enthusiastic bounce in his step that only newbies would have.

Jackie and Gunner are Rob's 6-year-old twins (Jackie being 8 minutes older) and are the babies of this hodgepodge family. Jackie takes after her late mother with frizzy black hair usually tied in pigtails. She loves wearing pink, reads way above her level, and is a horse girl in that she wants one to stomp on the people she doesn't like. Gunner looks more like his dad, though his hair is a little messier and overgrown. He hates school but loves dirt and monster trucks. Both of them have a troublesome streak but Jackie's a little better at hiding it. They quarrel like siblings do but at the end of the day, they always stick up for each other.

“How are you so talented?” Luka smiles at Marinette as he hands her back the few designs he’s been permitted to look at.

Marinette’s cheeks darken as she bumps him with her shoulder. “They’re just drafts for the Hero series.”

“And they’re only the drafts?” He looks at he in awe making her giggle.

“I’m thinking of trying a special sub-line this time, too.” She hums, a dash of mischief in her voice as she pulls a few new ones from the folder as well.

Luka tilts his head at the look in her eyes but takes the papers to look at and almost chokes on his spit. In his hands are sketches for what appears to be a his and hers lingerie line of what will probably be all the heroes who have worked alongside Ladybug, and he suddenly understands why Marinette spent so much time having him, Ivan, Mylene, and Alix transform through whatever miraculous hadn’t been used by the opposite sex. She must have been seeing how they would manifest between the different styles, sexes, and body types.

Help in his hands were the designs for what looked like the mouse, the fox, and the dragon. Each was in the colors of the appropriate kwami with their accent colors appearing like they will have a shimmer to them. He looked over the lacey hood and rope...whip?...the tail of the mouse, the obvious fox play aspects in orange, and the elegant Chinese inspiration for the dragon until something occurred to him and his head snaps up to look at Mari.

“Is there a snake design?” He asks wide-eyed, suddenly realizing that was the exact reason for her behavior as he sees the smug look on her face. His mind races through possibilities of how Sass’s colors will play with her eyes and flops back against the couch with a groan. “Please tell me you already have a test run made.”

“Hmm. Maybe.” Marinette smirks, slipping the designs back in her portfolio carefully. “Guess you’ll just have to wait and see.”

Luka sighs dramatically, sinking further into the couch. “How did I get such a talented, pretty, and beyond amazing girlfriend?” He asks, just to see the pink dust her cheeks at the praise. Even after all these years of him desperately trying to fix the damage her so-called friends caused, she still can’t handle genuine compliments. At least she’s stopped denying them.

“Flattery will get you nowhere this time.” Marinette giggles as she flops equally dramatically across his lap. “At least not any faster anyway.”

“So you do have one ready?” He hums with a smug eyebrow raise.

“Well of course I’m going to use my favorite hero for my pitch to the boss.” She smiles slyly, playing with a button on his shirt. “By the look of things, it might be done by Friday.”

Luka’s eyes lit up at her hidden meaning. “Just in time for date night?”

“Might be literally just in time if the dark teal shimmer lace doesn’t stop catching.” She pouts, looking at the bangle around his wrist in annoyance. “Would be a great time for someone to let me borrow him for Second Chance, but nOooo. Someone is too attached to their holder.”

“Itsss not my fault he’sss the besst holder I’ve had sssince the American Revolution,” Sass smirks from where he has landed on Luka’s shoulder. “And while you’re a fantassstic Ladybug and an amazing Guardian, you put too much on yourssself which is not a good thing for timeliness. Even if itsss jussst fussssy fabric.”

Marinette pouts up at the small snake, trying to use her puppy eyes.

“Thossse only work on Luka.” The snake snickers as he flies out of range of the pillow thrown at him in embarrassment.

“Sssshush you! They do not!” Luka huffs at his kwami while trying to ignore the hiss that slipped out even as his ears turn pink.

Marinette and Sass look at each other before looking back to the guitar player with deadpan expressions.

“What?” Luka sighs, knowing he’s already about to get tag teamed.

“Hey, Marinette? Remember that one egg disssh?” Sass hisses.

“The kind of smelly one that tastes really good, but someone won’t let in the house?” Marinette hums innocently. “Yeah, I remember.”

“I sssudenly got a craving for it and had to ussse Sssecond Chanccce too many timesss today. Think we can have it tonight?” Sass sighs with dramatics more befitting of Plagg than the snake.

“That sounds like a wonderful idea!” Marinette grins before looking at Luka with her earlier puppy eyes. “Pleeeease, Luka?”

“Absolutely not, Marinette!” Tikki scolds as she zips into the room. “It took all weekend to get rid of that smell last time!”

“Tikki’s right. It does smell really ba-” Luka started to try but saw the girl’s lip wobble as she clasped her hands together. “Mari…”

“Please, Luka?” She pouts.

“Come on, Luka! Be strong!” Tikki tries to help despite knowing they’ve already lost.

“Mari, come on. Those won’t work…Not the whimper.” He sighs, letting his head flop back on the couch again. “What happened to the shy awkward girl on that boat all those years ago?”

“She got the world’s best boyfriend who showed her her worth?”

Luka sighs again. “I’ll open the windows…” He relents, ignoring Tikki’s groan and Mari and Sass’ celebration.

“I told you, Luka,” Sass smirks, ducking behind Marinette before the next pillow could get him.

“Ssshush you.” Luka hisses despite smiling fondly at the two. “Menacesss. The both of you.”

Marinette giggles, giving him a quick kiss on the lips before pulling him up from the couch with her. “Come on, help me cook.”

Luka just smiles, letting himself be pulled to the kitchen as Tikki, Sass, and the non-permanent Kwamis zip around to open windows.

I ended up smelling foul the rest of the night, but the happy hums from Marinette and Sass were worth it.

“Mari~!” Luka calls from the entrance. “We’re gonna be late for the reservation! Should I cancel and we go to a cafe instead, or are you almost ready?” He had gotten used to changing plans a while ago when he found out she was Ladybug and they decided to try again so it didn’t really bother him.

“Coming! Coming!” Mari yells, jumping down the two entrance steps and struggling into her flats. “Sorry, the clasp broke on my purse and a certain dragon stole my spares because they looked like treasure.” She huffs, calling the dragon out despite knowing he’s across town with Kagami and probably did it the last time they visited. “Let’s go.” She smiles.

Luka chuckles at the kwami’s antics, offering his arm as he opened the door. “Find a substitute?”

“Yeah, luckily the Chat purse matches well enough with the teals of my dress.” She smiles, taking his arm as they leave the apartment. “Guessing you got us in at the hotel?”

“Mhmm.” Luka nods as he opens his jacket for Sass to fly into the pocket. “The fame has its perks, but it’s also nice that Chloe finally calmed down after she went away to college.”

“You’re telling me. She spoils Sabrina rotten now that they’re together. I thought the poor girl was going to combust.” Marinette giggles as they leave the building, hand in hand.

“Still wild to think that all those years, she was just pulling on your pigtails. You seriously had everyone in your class enamored with you didn’t you?”

Marinette flushes at the reminder, hiding her face in her coat. “Oh shush, Mr. Chat Noir’s Bi-Awakening.”

It was Luka’s turn to flush now as he laughed. “Fair enough. Probably would have asked to go for it if his two sides weren’t so horrible to you.” He smiles lovingly down at her.

“He’s in therapy after the Hawkmoth stuff so maybe one day.” She giggles, hip bumping him. “As long as you let me show Kagami how Adrien should have treated her.”

Luka chuckles at the mischief in her eyes. “I almost feel sorry for my fellow reptile if you get ahold of her. I thought you already started on her?”

Marinette slumps, pouting. “We’re still working on the being emotionally stunted. What’s with rich parents messing up their kids so much?”

Luka shrugs with a frown. “Almost glad it took my dad 16 years and me getting akumatized again to show up if that’s the result.”

Marinette frowns up at him, bumping their shoulders. “At least he’s trying now?”

Luka smiles at her, bumping her back. “Yeah. It still feels like babysitting when we hang out, but it’s nice to see him and Juleka finally bonding now that Roaar’s helping her. Good choice as always by the way.”

Marinette beams up at him, and his smile turns fond as they enter the restaurant and get seated. As they separate to go to their separate seats across from each other, however, Luka finally realizes Marinette had slipped something into his hand while they were walking. His brow furrows as he looks at her, only to be met with her mischievous look from behind her menu.

“Uh, Mari, what is thi- Oh.” He turns the small rectangle in his hand as he begins to question her before he finally sees the brand name on what he realizes is a remote and it finally clicks what he’s holding. He looks back up at her with a smirk. “Are you sure you shouldn’t be the one with the fox?”

“Nah, Nathaniel is doing much better with it than I ever could.” She giggles, waving him off. “Though Trix and Marc are probably going to be the death of him.”

“Probably.” He hums in agreeance as he slips the remote into his lap so she can’t see it. “So how is your new pitch going?”

“Almost done.” She sighs, looking through the menu. “I got the one project done today finally.” She hides the smirk behind the menu as she watches the meaning click and his head snap up to look at her. “I’m wearing it now.”

Luka’s eyes spark in interest as he looks her over. “Oh?”

“Mhmm. Looks kind of like your original suit if it was lacey and showed off assets.” Marinette hums.

Luka groans under his breath while giving up on the menu. He’ll just end up ordering the same thing as a few months ago anyway. “What day is your meeting again?”

“Monday, so it needs to stay in one piece.” She warns, looking at him mischievously. “But it is washing machine safe.”

“Perfect.” He smiles before pressing the remote in his lap.

Marinette slaps a hand over her mouth to hide her squeak as she pretends to glare at him. “Getting right into it, huh?”

“How can I not when you’ve given me such a nice new toy?” He smiles at her innocently. “Don’t worry, I’ll behave when the waiter comes...As long as you do that is.”

Soon enough, Luka is pulling out and tossing the tied-off condom into the nearby wastebasket so he can collapse onto the bed and pull Mari onto his chest.

“How are you so perfect?” Luka whispers into her hair as he spoils her with kisses.

Oh goodness that is going to be hard to pin down but from what I have seen the most popular Xiyouji adaptations have been at least

1960 Alakazam the Great - only saying this one because it is one of the first cartoon of Sun Wukong that was exposed to the West and while not hugely influential there made such an impact in Japan, leading to this version inspiring cartoon shows and even a remark movie years later. I hope that this verse keeps getting talked about and maybe a tv series about him can come around.

1961 Havoc in Heaven - this version will not die and will never die, this is the OG Wukong for so many people then and now, the defining master among Wukong's. Out of all the media, this is the most marketed and the most well-known. While not having new movies or tv shows this one is seen in commercials, shorts, toys, and designs. This Wukong's influence on things from children's clothing to even watches for thousands of dollars is mind staggering. If I would think anyone could last another 400 years with their impact of influence, it would be this Wukong, he is almost 100 since his first debut and he is still going strong. I have no doubt he will still be there in the next 40 years to celebrate his 100th birthday.

1978 Monkey (Saiyūki) - the popularity of this one wasn't in China but rather in Japan and even the dub in Europe. This is what really brought a generation of Western audiences into Xiyouji media. Went on to inspire more Japanese Saiyuki media as this was that standard with a female cast of Sanzang and a more outrageous Wukong. This one has most recently influenced the Netflix tv series Legends of the Monkey King.

1986 Dragon Ball - I feel I am kinda cheating by including Dragon Ball because it's only really the first dragon ball series that followed a similar 'journey' plot structure but it did get the franchise going and led to its future success in Dragon Ball Z. While current Dragon Ball has undoubtedly becomes its own thing with only it's main character having the same name as Sun Wukong it cannot be doubted the mass influence this media has on current culture and while no longer quite Xiyouji media, it was still started with it and should be noted.

1986 Journey to the West - this one set the standard for Wukong's live-action actors. Like sure there was plenty of life-action Wukong movies before this, so many in movies and even other tv specials but this is the most defining cast and most loyal plot following series that defined what people think when they think of Wukong, Saznag, Bajie, Wujing, and even Bailong. This was the series that didn't give Bailong a name but they were the ones that gave him the unforgettable plot of having a finance, something that has spun into SERVAL movies and even a tv series. The Wukong actor set how other Wukong actors were to play the character for years to come. So many movies use these designs in their own movies as it was so recognizable and notable. While other live-action series have come out that have tried to capture that same magic I have not seen anything nearly as nearly all-encompassing to audiences as 1986

1995 A Chinese Odyssey: Pandora's Box and A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella - this piece in particular was revolutionary, I cannot express that enough. While it wasn't huge in Hong Kong on its debut it was near worshiped by mainland audiences about 5 years later, just through being watched through pirated VHS that grew its popularity on the early 2000s internet. It was so popular that it was given theater releases again, and even college classes over these media with how effective it was in changing Wukong's image in modern culture. He went from being an upright, stoppable hero to a man with heartache, identity issues, and being forced to being a product of the system, many things early 2000s youth related to on another level. You couldn't go anywhere not knowing "It was only when I lost her, that I felt regretful. It's the most painful ordeal in this world. If I'm given another chance I will say three words to her "I love you" If there's a need to put a time limit to this love, I hope it's ten thousand years." People who never watched the movie knew this quote. Went on to inspire the Bio of Wukong webnoval which was turned into Immortal Demon Slayer. Even argued it inspired Conquering the Demon and Demon Strikes Back.

1996 Journey to the West- one of the most controversial but beloved series with how it changes plot lines but the increased character development and character-driven narratives within the story. Dicky Cheung brought a talent that was unmatched and honesty their risks with changes in plot lines paid off greatly with how much care they put into their characters. This version was not afraid to take risks when it came to changes and performed greatly by giving the characters such deep meaningful moments and amazing humor, drama, and action. This has influenced when it comes to being a lot of people's first Xiyouji love action experience and that fun-loving hero in Wukong can be seen in other Wukong designs.

1999 Legends of the Monkey King - another generation-defining Wukong media, I find it so hard to find people that don't know him or watched him as this was and arguably still is the best animated Wukong retelling to date. The characters were lively and the actions was fierce but it gave each episode such life. At the moment there hasn't been another animated retelling that has had the same influence that this one has. At least no other tv series that I am aware of.

1999 Lotus Lantern - While not really Xiyouji retelling, this version completely rewrote Lotus Lantern media and its connection to Sun Wukong. This was the first time we see Wukong giving solo attention as a shifu to Chenxiang and before this version, you would see Chenxiang having some other teacher in live action movies or even mention of his brother and his accidental killing of a noble son. But after this movie that version has been GREATLY overshadowed with Sun Wukong being Chenxiang, leading to about three more movies and at least three tv series. with the same concept. The idea of Erlang Shen's greatest rival teaching his nephew to defeat him was so captive to audiences that it has had a stronghold of the version since.

2009 Monkey King - This one's media influence was large but more so in how it was in both merchandising and promotional material. This piece of media leads to a particular focus on Wukong in his younger years, leading to more media in the future following a concept similar. However, the largest connection this series has had is with it's spin-off series for children's education called Little Monkey King.

2015 Monkey King: Hero Is Back - another defining Sun Wukong in the animated department, not seen since 1999 with how well received and beloved this Wukong is. This was a lot of people's first movie Wukong and brought in another wave of Xiyouji fans into the series and adored. This series led to a game being created and even promises of a sequel and prequel in the works. There is a large agreement this Wukong was to inspire the Monkey King Reborn movie that came out a few years later.

And at the moment I believe that I'm going to have to stop there as these are series that I have seen prevails and while there have been great movies and shows since Imma have to wait to see which really make an impact on further media. But until then I would think that these are some of the most defining media to date that have affected other media as well!

why do I trust fandom with anything... This took me 5 min of googling heian period clothing. Like writing this up has taken 6 times as long as realizing fandom heian was wrong when they were describing clothes. Patterned kosode were not outerwear until The End the Heian period (more during the kamakira period honestly) and really only took off afterwards. Heian was the start of diverging from Chinese fashion so during this period it was still Tang dynasty galore. During the Heian period kosode and hakama would have been worn as underlayers. In terms of menswear a hitoe (lit. Layer) would have come on over that, possible many hitoe. There sometimes were even more layers that I don't care enough to research. On the outside would be a closed round collared jacket (think tale of genji, or the clothes in folk tale books like kaguya's story, or priest clothing, or just tang court clothing really). The type of outer round collar jacket and some of the other layers depended on court position and formality.

Now here's the interesting thing. Sukuna is both a culture snob and the type of dude to do whatever he wants regardless of societal norms. I mean he's wearing a women's kimono which didn't develop until like the 1600s (1800s? Eh some time wayyy after the Heian period. It's also an iki style kimono which didn't happen until the edo period restrictions). But he also gets hung up on a haiku not having a seasonal word and is the type of pretentious bastard to sprinkle his speech with poetic phrases and literary references that no one is going to get. His speech pattern is kinda flowery. Anyways this is all to say that in like the 30min I've looked this up I don't think he'd wear a sokutai which is the formal court dress that's the best documented (on the english internet anyways), and he and yuuji and megumi and whoever else time traveled wouldn't be wearing kosode as outer robes. Whats crazy is that heian period clothing is still being worn in japan 1000 years later at all, even if it's only imperial family and shinto ceremonies. Anyways I think it's more likely he'd be wearing kariginu (狩衣) which are informal hunting clothes. Good to slaughter people in. I'll be honest to my uncultured eyes the types of heian menswear all look the same they just have different names.

Elena Dawson: The Art of Artisanal Fashion

Today's blog post marks a special moment for me. Not only because it's my first on Shifting Patterns, but also because I deeply admire and enjoy the work of this designer. So much so that my wife and I even got married in her garments. Today, I want to introduce you to Elena Dawson.

Elena Dawson, a London-born fashion designer for menswear and womenswear, keeps much of her personal life under wraps.There's no existing website anymore, and her former blog is no longer accessible. Only a Instagram account with a couple of posts and a contact email serves as a point of contact. It all somewhat reminds of the enigmatic Paul Harnden, doesn't it? But we'll get to that later. She studied Art and Fashion Design at the University of Brighton and worked as a seamstress after completing her degree. At that time, she said, "I draw on the knowledge I learned at the tailors still now in the way I make clothing."

In 2000, she co-founded the clothing line "Paul Harnden Clothiers" with her ex-partner Paul Harnden. She was an integral part of the design, concept, and business until 2009 with Paul Harnden, who was primarily known under the name "Paul Harnden Shoemakers" until then, when she decided to establish her own clothing and shoe label in East Sussex. Her studio is located there as well. Despite Dawson's departure, Paul Harnden's ready-to-wear collections continue to this day. Since 2009, the brand has naturally grown, but Dawson still produces her clothes and shoes herself, supported by a small team. Everything is produced in-house in multiple studio spaces, but all is handmade.

The aesthetic of Dawson's work at Paul Harnden and her own brand has definitely evolved over the years. Paul Harnden, who is now known not only for his shoes but also for his blazers/jackets, coats, trousers, and shirts, has a rather clean cut and neatly sewn edges. On the other hand, Elena Dawson has a rather rough look and is known for her unfinished seams with dangling fabric scraps. It's sometimes hard to describe, but she has a very romantic, poetic, Victorian look that partly reminds me of Tim Burton movies.

When I put on one of her beloved blazers, I often feel like a part of Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, almost like a wardrobe from the 19th century. I own 2 blazers (linen and wool), 1 linen shirt, 2 pants (linen and cotton), and silk accessories from Dawson. My wife has a mix of a coat and dress. All her clothes are labelled with the classic "Elena Dawson - Made In England" label and the washing/material information written in her really unreadable handwriting with a Sharpie.

The coats and blazers (mostly) feature beige/white cotton lining, and the classic look, often seen online, is achieved by rolling the sleeves backward, exposing the lining through the open seams. She works with a dress form, sculpturing everything, and only uses natural materials. Her favorites are English wool, Indian cotton, Irish linen, and Chinese silk. She describes her work as follows: "When you work on alterations you are really tearing the guts out of the garment, performing a sort of autopsy—you really get to see a garment at its most vulnerable point. Observing this state of semi-deconstruction in the making of a garment or shoe is what I like to retain in my finished work."

You'll rarely get the chance to buy her pieces online, as there are hardly any retailers offering her items online. She mentioned: "We don't do much press or social media work and we don't sell online at all. I'm not against that. It's just not the brand's main job." Elena Dawson limits the maximum order quantity and carefully chooses her retailers. She prefers to keep the brand small, and even on classic online platforms like Grailed, Vestiaire Collective, or eBay, you won't find many of her items used.

I highly recommend visiting a retailer near you for the experience alone and trying on the clothes in-store. In my case, it's Harvey's in Berlin. However, the most well-known point of sale is probably Dover Street Market in London, with whom she has a strong relationship, as Dover Street Market has actively supported her brand from the beginning, granting her a significant presence there. In Tokyo, I was also able to find her pieces at DSM and at the Comme des Garcons Pocket Store.

The result is garments full of personality that evolve over time alongside one's own personality, incomparable to any other looks consumed and worn nowadays. Each piece, crafted by her hands, is unique, and I'll tell you, the first time I wore an Elena Dawson blazer at Harvey's in Berlin, it resonated with me. The look, the weight, the fit… it felt like a second skin, and over the course of 2 years, seeing how it aged with me, it became more like an extension of myself each day.

Here's to Elena — may your artistic journey continue to inspire and captivate for years to come!

Tibetan Uprising Day 2024 and a Half-Forgotten Human Rights Disaster

"Tibetans inside Tibet: We are with you!"

The red, yellow and blue colours of Tibet's flag flew across the Pariser Platz square behind Brandenburg Gate on Sunday as some 80 protesters gathered for Tibetan Uprising Day.

Reeducation camps for Uyghur Muslims in China, more rarely developments in Hong Kong, and controversies around the Dalai Lama who is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, may dominate international news headlines.

But the plight of inhabitants in the Tibetan region that the protestors portrayed in signs, speeches, and information panels yesterday is no longer common knowledge.

A youngish man in jeans and a puffer jacket, who was walking across the square on Sunday, asked the police officer beside him who had mentioned Tibet, "Was ist das?" ('What is it?') The police officer, at least, knew the answer.

Miniature History In 1950 the Chinese People's Liberation Army invaded the remote region bordering Nepal. Ever since then, the autonomy or even the independence of Tibet has been hotly disputed, as well as the measures through which the ruling Chinese Communist Party governs the country. Tibetan Uprising Day marks the anniversary of a revolt in 1959.

'Many of us standing here today,' a speaker wearing traditional embroidered clothing told the crowd in Berlin, 'have never been in Tibet.'

Instead the protesters on Sunday were often exiles, many second-generation.

Their relatives in Tibet face systematic repression.

The Berlin speakers accused the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of cultural genocide. Children as young as 5 years old are sent to residential boarding schools where they are educated as Chinese, while Tibetan language and culture are forbidden.

Monasteries and convents that were destroyed in the mid-20th century and only partly rebuilt in the 1980s remain vulnerable.

The Chinese government has been building massive hydroelectric dams in Tibet. Permission from Tibetans is not asked, a reporter from Tibet.tv said at the protest in Berlin. Instead, entire villages and monasteries, dating back even to the times where Europe was in the Middle Ages, are destroyed.

Local Tibetans who protest mega-dam projects are arrested and, at times, beaten.

A-Nya Sengdra, a nomad in Qinghai province, is in the middle of a 7-year prison sentence on charges like 'provoking trouble.' In a 2020 press release from the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, experts say that he had been active for example against "illegal hunting and poaching of endangered animals."

As his prison sentence continues, friends are worried for his health.

Outside Tibet, in his Indian exile of Dharamshala, the Dalai Lama has also spoken enigmatically about his successor as spiritual leader. He is 88 years old. The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama has a spiritual dimension for Tibetan Buddhists, but the Chinese Communist Party — a secular body —wants the next Dalai Lama to be approved by them first.

But, also explaining why Tibet is seldom in news headlines, it is difficult to obtain information from within the region. Writing for the Human Rights Watch website in 2022, an expert spoke of

The Heyday of International Awareness of Tibet In the 1980s and 90s and early 2000s, Tibet was a cause célèbre. Actress Sharon Stone and actor Richard Gere, who are Tibetan Buddhist, spoke out in favour of its independence. The Tibet-inspired American fantasy film The Golden Child (1986) earned $149.4 million at the box office. In 1997, two films followed: Kundun, directed by Martin Scorsese, and Seven Years in Tibet . When this reporter arrived in Germany in 2006, a string of Tibetan prayer flags crossed above a neighbourhood street. Tourists were drawn to Tibet — this has not changed: it is estimated that 15 million of them visited in 2015. But Tibet was not just famous in cultural spheres. In 1989, the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Tenuous links exist between Tibetans in countries like Germany and Tibetans in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. But the CCP's surveillance extends beyond international borders. Telephone calls may be monitored, participation in protests by Tibetans in exile become a problem for relatives.

Surveillance within Tibet is so severe that human rights organizations and activists reported in 2022 that the CCP are gathering DNA on a large scale — of hundreds of thousands of people, including schoolchildren — to track dissidents.

The Tibet Initiative Deutschland and the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker, two non-governmental groups, co-organized the Berlin protest on March 10.

The Gesellschaft noted on their social media that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to China in April.

In Tibetan communities in the country and abroad there are conflicting opinions on how to resist the Chinese Communist Party. Peacefully, through classic forms of protest? Through self-immolation?

A speaker from the Tibet Initiative Deutschland described his group's campaign to persuade municipalities across Germany to raise the flag of Tibet over their town halls for Tibetan Uprising Day in solidarity. Over 400, he said, had agreed.

Efforts at the federal level by the German chancellor, foreign minister, and others on behalf of minorities' civil and political rights, however, are apparently often undermined by German corporations.

A representative of the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker told the crowd in front of the German Foreign Ministry yesterday:

Corporations doing business within China — the German foreign ministry reports in its China-Strategie publication that there are 5,000 of these — lobby for silence, fearing financial losses.

near death experience… growing up in a rich family with a father deeply involved in his work, dohyun was no stranger to acting out in his youth. whether it was because he simply enjoyed it or because he was vying from attention from his overly busy parents he wouldn't have admitted otherwise. when he was about twelve almost thirteen years old and hanging out with the wrong type of people, dohyun and his friends had snuck into a construction site one night. as idiots in their youth, the boys were playing among dangerous and unstable structures that they shouldn't have. when one friend knocked a beam slightly out of its position, a series of events led to it falling from several stories above the ground and landed on dohyun. the impact and being crushed underneath, against all odds he shouldn't have survived. he doesn't remember much past the shock of the impact knocking him unconscious and it took several months of surgeries and rehabilitations before he regained mobility once more. every now and then a lilt can be noticed in the way he walks, evidence of past trauma to his body and how he had to relearn how to walk.

power… magnetism manipulation / magnetokinesis. the most basic example of this power would be magneto aka erik lensherr from marvel comics ( for which he also shares his alias with ). on its most basic level, dohyun can manipulate magnetism and magnetic fields, an attractive and repulsive phenomenon produced by the movement of electrical charges. magnetism is commonly demonstrated with ferromagnetic materials ; matter that forms magnets or objects that attracted to magnets. as a result this is common to see with any material that some kind of level of metal in that is is attracted or influenced by magnetic fields such as iron, cobalt, nickel, and other alloys. dohyun can simulate telekinesis in a way that an object must have some kind of metal or influenced magnetic material inside of it. for example, he can easily lift cars of various sizes, manipulate and change their shape and sending them flying with accuracy. if something is sent flying towards him, he can redirect or even stop such as long as it again has some kind of metal or magnetically influenced material inside of it. something he has been working as of late could be called magnetokinetic flight which makes it seem as if he is able to fly or glide in the air using magnetic manipulation. through generation of strong magnetic fields around himself he can do this and has been working on how high he can take himself safely and how long he can stay in the air.

drawbacks / vulnerabilities… prolonged overuse of his ability leads to severe nose bleeds which can lead to a myriad of symptoms including dizziness and lack of coordination. there have been times when he has used to his power to such a overbearing degree that has exhausted his body and caused him to collapse. whether this is simply due to overuse or the remnants of his injury when he was a child that led to the development of his power he is not certain of. excessive heat on metal objects can lead to it becoming paramagnetic meaning that the usual attraction of magnetic forces is much weaker and as such can be harder to control or manipulate for example molten metal. a certain type of shielding known as a faraday cage or faraday shield is an enclosure that is used to be block electromagnetic fields and could be used to disrupt his ability if he were enclosed in such.

codename… using his power as the basis for the so-called alias about him, magneto rolls off the tongue quite well. considering that dohyun himself is quite morally grey, he tries to separate his publicly known persona as dohyun, the hotshot lawyer who inherited a law firm from his long since deceased father and whom is known for taking on high profile cases with an even higher win rate, and the eo known as magneto. he enjoys anonymity and the separation between the two and often exhibits his more negative attributes as magneto than as dohyun.

He was the youngest of four siblings and his family was one of the poorest in the village. He has been described as a very intelligent, but introverted and sociopathic young man. In 1985, at the age of 17, he dropped out of school, refused to return home, and began his wanderings around China, working as a pieceworker. Three years later he had his first trouble with the law and was sent to a work camp for having committed a series of thefts in Xian, in Shaanxi, and Shijiazhuang, in Hebei. In 1996, he was arrested for attempted rape in Zhumadian, his home village. He served three years in prison. During this time something happens in Yang’s mind. Once free, he began an endless series of murders and rapes that will stain Chinese news for the next 4 years. The provinces of Anhui, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong were hit by a wave of crimes never seen before.

Yang slipped into victims’ homes at night, killing all occupants with improvised weapons (axes, hammers, and shovels). Sometimes he slaughtered entire families. Each time, after the murders, he showed up in new clothes, often wearing shoes that are too big. In October 2002, Yang killed a father and his six-year-old daughter with a shovel, then raped his pregnant wife who managed to survive the assault, sustaining numerous head injuries. On December 6 he massacred an entire family (grandmother, parents, and two children) in the village of Liuzhuang in Henan. The details were told by the grandfather, Liu Zhongyuan. In the words of the elderly man, three days later they were supposed to move to their new home. The grandfather discovered the crime when he entered the old house to visit his grandchildren and found his granddaughter lying on the floor with a hole in her head.

The room was completely bloody. Liu Zhongyuan’s wife was still alive, but she died ten days later from the injuries she received and was no longer able to speak. Yang Xinhai later confessed that in that case, he killed the family with a hammer, which he then buried in a grave that same night after throwing his clothes into a river. Then, he walked to the nearby town of Luohe, about two hours away. This was not the only time. On several occasions, Yang slaughtered entire households in similar ways: In Anhui, on October 1, 2000 (3 victims, 1 rape), on August 15, 2001, in Henan (3 victims, 1 rape), on January 6, 2002, in Henan (5 victims, 1 rape), on June 30, 2002, in Henan (4 victims, 1 rape), on July 28, 2002 (4 victims, 2 rapes), on November 8, 2002, in his home village (4 victims, 2 rapes, 1 injured), on December 15, 2002, in Anhui (3 victims, 1 injured), on February 5, 2003 (3 victims, 1 rape, 1 injured), on February 18, 2003 (4 victims, 2 rapes), on March 23 in Kaifeng, Henan (4 victims, 1 rape), on August 8, 2003, in Shijiazhuang (5 victims).

On November 3, 2003, Yang was arrested by a police patrol during a routine inspection of some entertainment centers in Cangzhou, Hebei. Once at the station, the officers discovered he was wanted for murder in four provinces. Yang confessed rather quickly. His short but intense criminal career left a long trail of blood in the provinces he visited: 49 murders and 17 rapes in Henan: eight murders and three rapes in Hebei: six murders and two rapes in Anhui: two murders and one rape in Shandong. He often travelled between cities by bicycle. His DNA matched that found at the crime scene. On February 1 of the following year, Yang, at age 38, after refusing to appeal, was found guilty and sentenced to the death penalty.

According to some reports Yang was driven to kill to take revenge against society, guilty of having negatively influenced his relationship with the girlfriend. Later, other newspapers declared that his actions were dictated by more macabre motives: Yang took a morbid pleasure in stealing, killing, and raping. Although Yang has never really expressed the motivations that drove him to kill, there is an emblematic statement of his that helps us to understand the reason for his extreme and heinous acts: “When I kill, I feel the desire to kill again. This drives me to kill. I don’t care if my victims deserved to die or not. I don’t give a damn … I have no desire to be part of society. Society is not my problem.”

she was really upset by luis' death, as she had grown to see him as a friend and even possibly as a lover, but had to disguise her feelings to avoid showing weakness to krauser and wesker

in fact she very seriously thought about going to desprate measures in order to save luis through the use of one of the virus samples she had collected, but decided against it because she knew how wrong and twisted reanimated human life could be

she's saved leon more times than he or even the audience knows, even on smaller missions, if she learns that leon is out doing government work, she will (directly or indirectly) keep an eye on him to make sure he's okay

no matter how much time has passed, she still can't fully explain why she saved leon the first time in 1998

who are some of your biggest musical influences?"you know when i think about musical influences i always come back to women in music. like i'd say theres an infinite number of artists that i like or love and i'm sure i take inspiration from so many of them but when i'm thinking about people who make the kind of music that inspires me and made me go 'i wanna do that too', always women. alanis morissette, amy winehouse, florence and the machine, fiona apple, regina spektor. but i'm also constantly inspired by my friends who make music too."

what is the first record you ever bought?"the first record i ever bought... oooh--" she started batting her lashes trying to recall through the scattered thoughts in her brain. her collection was big and she remembered being a kid with her brother when she'd bought her very first CD. "i think it was inside in / inside out from the kooks. yeah and i still love that album."

what has working in the music industry meant to you thus far in your career?she couldn't have smiled wider if she tried in that moment. "oh it's meant everything. this is all i've ever wanted so to be able to be a part of this industry and have this career is literally my dream."

what are some stand out moments from your career so far? "i think just the entire trajectory of my career i've been really thankful for, you know? like getting signed to eclipse, being able to tour, getting featured in sonic, being able to work for eclipse... it's all been so fucking amazing i wouldn't wish for anything else.

how would you describe your style of performance? what makes your shows worth seeing?"i think my favourite kind of shows to perform will always be intimate ones. you know tiny bandrooms and stages that are like three feet off the floor just because it enhances the atmosphere and connects you to your audience so easily." there's almost a look of reminiscence on her features, like she's thinking back to specific shows in mind. as she slowly comes back to reality immy starts nodding her head again. "but i think as my shows grew and you know my stages had to get taller or rooms got bigger or i was opening for bigger acts i really had to adapt and find other ways to connect with crowds, especially when they're not your own crowds right? so i find just trying to have as much energy as possible is the best thing. making sure you're connecting with your band too and just trying to get everyone as fucking hyped as possible whilst throwing a slow one in there every now and then."

[Hypebeast] Essentials: Oh Hyuk

For our latest installment of Essentials, Hypebeast Korea speaks with South Korean multi-hyphenate artist Oh Hyuk. As the leader, singer, and guitarist of the indie band HYUKOH, he has had a tremendous impact both locally and globally through cross-boundary collaborations with various artists and individual projects. Oh Hyuk is also a member of 다다DADA多多, a creative collective and label that has been developing a variety of playful collaborations across apparel and F&B. Inaugurated into HB100 back in 2017 as an individual artist, he appears in Hypebeast 100 once again this year as a member of 다다DADA多多.

Behind Oh Hyuk’s multifaceted career is an intriguing personal history. He was born in Korea and grew up in China where he graduated from an international school, making him trilingual in Korean, Chinese and English. He then entered the Department of Arts at Hongik University, the most prestigious school for arts in South Korea while working retail at Vans.

Oh Hyuk decided to become a singer at an early age but his parents were against his dream. In an effort to convince them, he auditioned for the most prominent music agencies in South Korea and got accepted by them all, but ultimately declined them all due to creative differences — going on to form his own band. Having shown a keen sense of fashion in many different ways, he eventually captured the attention of the iconic designer, Virgil Abloh, leading to a number of collaborations.

Join us below as the 29-year-old multi-hyphenate runs us through his picks including special collaborations, personal collectibles, and musical equipment. Maison Martin Margiela “0,10” Artisanal Military Field Jacket Tanker

This is my favorite jacket. It’s an artisanal Maison Martin Margiela piece from the early 2000s based on military field jackets. I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago at a famous Japanese vintage clothing shop called LAILA TOKIO. I carry the jacket with me whenever I travel and I’ve worn it so much that one of the four signature stitches under the neckline on the back has worn out, but I like it as it is now.

Shin Murayama x HYUKOH Face Mask

This is the work of Shin Murayama, a Tokyo-born mask designer based in New York who has collaborated with many famous artists such as A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. We worked together several times, and this mask is the first one we made together. Knowing that I like Polo, he reconstructed a Polo vintage cap into a signature mask. There are four versions for each member of HYUKOH. The design is very unique so I mostly wear it for performances or photo shoots. We worked with him again later on the outfits for through love in which Shin Murayama, Virgil Abloh, and HYUKOH worked together.

Off-White Out of Office Sneakers Signed by Virgil Abloh

The first time I met Virgil was at Coachella in 2019. I was introduced to him at the site and he contacted me later. From then on, we started working on several projects together. I remember when our EP was released, he shouted us out. We made music for the Louis Vuitton SS21 show in Shanghai and he made the costumes for our online world tour. Each project was released at a different time, but they were carried out almost simultaneously. He also gave me special gifts, and this is one of them. I heard the news of his passing while we were working on so many things together, so I was incredibly shocked and upset of the news.

Apple AirPods Max, AirPods Pro, Teenage Engineering M–1 Headphones

I usually use AirPods Max, AirPods Pro, and Teenage Engineering‘s M-1 Personal Monitor Headphones to test and monitor my music in various conditions. With popular noise-canceling headphones and earphones, I can check my music from the perspective of ordinary listeners. With headphones from a completely different style, I’m able to check the overall volume. It all becomes a reference when adjusting the sound. The AirPods Max in particular was a gift from former Apple designer Eugene Whang, a Korean American industrial designer who played a key role in designing the AirPods Max.

Teenage Engineering Silver TX-6 Field Mixer, Cables

This little mixer is another Teenage Engineering device I use. I purchased it because I was trying to make my work environment more simple and partially because it looked so cute. Considering the size, the spec is quite impressive. You can use it as an audio interface for recordings, and every function from faders, effects to EQs is available. It also supports up to 6 channels of stereo and 12 channels of mono. It hasn’t been that long since I bought it, so I’m still studying how to use it well. I also always bring a Porter bag full of cables because I often work outside. All the cables are Teenage Engineering products too.

Apple iPad Pro

I carry an iPad instead of a laptop as a way of simplifying my work environment these days. Since the introduction of the M1 processor, the iPad is enough for most of my music works. I can do MIDI work without difficulty and even sample-based work is more intuitive and easier because it’s touch-based. I mainly use three programs: Cubase, Pro Tools, and Ableton.

Tom Sachs MacBook Bag

As I do design work at 다다DADA多多, I study a lot about fabrics and materials. While researching, I discovered a fabric called Dyneema which is flame-retardant, waterproof and used for ballistic armor and fishing line. Soon I found a bag made of Dyneema on the Tom Sachs website and purchased it. These days I only bring my iPad, mixer, and headphones, and they all fit compactly in this one bag, so I carry it around often.

Busan International Film Festival ID Card

I served as a music director for a feature film titled The Dream Songs this year. DQM, who was the cinematographer and a friend of mine, introduced me to the director. As this was my first music directing experience, I had great fun and excitement. Since I am a fan of Johnny Greenwood, a guitarist of Radiohead and film music composer and have always been a film lover, I used to think ‘this kind of music could be good in this scene’ while watching movies. I was quite proud that I could make scores for the first time and was invited to the Busan International Film Festival as a music director. I want to do it more in the future.

Sacred Card Holder, CLAUSTRUM Ashtray

It may be difficult to identify at first glance, but these are a card wallet and an ashtray. I bought the ashtray from a shop called Eliminator in Daikanyama, Tokyo. I first visited there about six years ago. The owner is so cool and her items are unique, so we talked a lot and got to know each other. Since then, it has become a regular place I visit whenever I go to Japan. The first thing I purchased there was the ashtray.

This compact metal wallet is from a brand called Sacred, which mainly makes utility items. The first time I saw it was at Kyobo Bookstore, Korea’s largest bookstore chain, and I decided to purchase it because I thought it would be great to pair it together with the ashtray which features a similar design.

The metal pick holder was made by me and a close friend of mine 10 years ago while I was a college student. I was going to buy a pick holder at the time, but the available ones were all made from plastic and I didn’t like them. I wanted a weightier metal case that fits in my hand. My close friend was majoring in sculpture, so I designed it and asked him to make it. A lump of iron was added to make it heavier. It works like a magazine. When you remove a pick from it, a new one comes up from the bottom. I use Dunlop picks — usually a 0.73mm thick pick for acoustic guitars and 1mm ones for electric guitars.

Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen, D’heygere Pen Charm

The pen on the left is made from metal similar to my pick holder. It’s easy to carry and I like its weight and size. The other pen on the right is a keychain made by replacing the cap of a BIC pen with a metal one. It’s made by D’heygere, a Paris based accessories brand that 다다DADA多多 collaborated with. They make unusual and fun accessories I like.

D’heygere x 다다DADA多多 Fortune Ear Cuff, Rice Necklace

These are jewelry pieces made by 다다DADA多多 and D’heygere. I think it was a good collaboration that wittily reflects Asian elements. The ear cuff is made of jade, and after the D’heygere collaboration, we made several more collaborative items with the theme of the stone, such as BE@RBRICKs and skateboards. The necklace on the other hand, is made with rice grain-shaped pearls. I find the combination of these two themes fun.

Mexican Opal Ring

The Mexican opal in the middle of the ring has a story. I fell in love with opals when I saw a picture of a large Mexican opal a few years ago, so I went around the jewelry stores and got my hands on a rough stone. I entrusted it to an acquaintance for processing, but soon forgot about it as I got busy with world tours. After 3 years, I suddenly remembered and went to look for it. They gave me another opal with a similar design, saying they couldn’t find the one I had entrusted and the opal then was commissioned to a friend who completed the current ring. It’s a ring that I’m especially attached to because of the bizarre process.

Leatherman Raptor Shears, Knipex Pliers Wrench XS

I really like tools. The one on the left is Leatherman‘s emergency scissors I recently bought. These are for paramedics who need to cut patient’s clothes or objects in case of an emergency. I haven’t been put in that situation, but I wanted to have it because the build quality was so good. The one on the right is a wrench from a German tool brand called Knipex. It’s small in size, so I usually carry it around and use it when changing guitar strings.

Custom Matthias Headphone Amp

Since we frequently record at different locations overseas, the monitoring conditions are often different each time. One time we recorded a song at the Funkhaus, which is Nils Frahm’s analog studio in Berlin, Germany. There, I found a headphone amp custom-made by Matthias. We experienced the performance of the amp and liked it so much that we asked Matthias, the producer of it, to make one for us.

We like vintage German music equipment a lot such as Neumann instruments from the pre-unification era and Matthias is an amazing analog gear engineer. He knows how to handle all of them and even restore them in detail. He also can custom-make analog equipment to our specifications. For the amp, we chose the material of the casing, the gold color panel, and the knob designs, and we also requested the numbers to be engraved in Chinese characters. Additionally, the port configuration for the amp is optimized for all four of our members to listen in at the same time.
