5x22: In an alley, before saying yes to Lucifer, Sam looks over at Castiel and extends his hand to shake. He tries to smile, saying, "Take care of these guys, okay?" Castiel looks apologetic, and responds, "That's not possible." Sam says, "Then humor me." Castiel shakes his head, realizing, "Oh, I'm supposed to lie." Sam rolls his eyes and laughs as Castiel says, unconvincingly, "Uh, sure. They'll be fine." Sam smiles a little and says, "Just– Just stop… talking."
12x23: Castiel sits with Kelly on her bed, holding her hand in both of his own. He tells her, "Don't worry. It will be fine." He gets up to lean forward and places a kiss on her head, and she briefly closes her eyes. Cas sits back and looks into her eyes to say, "Remember: paradise." She smiles at him and nods, closing her eyes again.
bonus 12x23: Sam, Dean, and Castiel look around apocalypse world. Sam asks, "Cas, what the hell is this?" Castiel looks regretful, and answers, "It's a world where you were never born. It's a world you never saved."

when Cas dies outside Kelly's cabin, whats interesting to me is. obviously, in and of itself, dean collapsing and staying at his side is pretty intense, full stop. but I think the context of Sam running off and leaving them alone really conveys the gravitas
dean is a guy who has mastered just putting his shit on hold until the danger / crisis / whatever is over. it's one of the most extreme bits of canonical evidence toward dean so repressive that he has never seen his real self.
but he SHUTS OFF when Cas dies. Sam takes a moment to be shocked but the thing is, like, they are still in ACTIVE danger mode, threat level midnight, new evil(?) god is being born as we speak and his good influence is dead oh shit. and he sprints inside to deal with it.
dean doesn't even move. he doesn't even look over his shoulder. at the house which was visibly crackling with power. or at his brother sprinting in. dean is GONE he shut the fuck down, he literally could not find it in himself to care nothing is real to him because he cannot make sense of a world without Cas, he cannot make sense of how Cas could die so suddenly, he just stares at him like if he makes himself wake up it will all be fine
