if toni shooting sam is meant to be an act of suicide on sam's part then it parallels dean's suicide in red meat and therefore shows an interesting new dynamic that's come out of billie's appearance. because if they can't bring their brother back, then there's no reason to live themselves
(of course dean was still hopeful at the time he did that but the actual actions he took were desperate and violent in ways he's never pursued before, so the imagery is the same)
