So I remembered a post that talked about crosswalks or street art that glowed in the dark. And honestly I really like the idea, why not make art to be enjoyed day and night? Why not making something as simple as crossing the street fun? But I just had a question pop into my head. Would glow in the dark art mess with any nocturnal creatures? I know there’s streetlights that can use a different color of light to be practically invisible for those creatures. But I don’t know much about glow in the dark stuff. I don’t know if you know much about that either, but I kinda wanna get that conversation started somewhere ya know?

I am answering some questions now and this one is super, super fun! And got me to research a bit.

So, scientists are in general arguing a bit about the amount of lumen (that is the measurement unit in which we measure brightness) it takes to become light polution. And that is even without going into the entire thing about light colors. Generally bluish/cold light is considered to be worse in terms of light pollution, because it reflects stronger in the atmosphere.

However, it is generally argued that light sources with a low lumenosity are not really much to be worried about. Usual street lights tend to emit 5000+ lumen, car lights are around 1000 lumen, and room lights are 500+ lumen, depending on the size of the space.

The current law is basically "everything over 500+ lumen is counted as light pollution if not done with proper paperwork", but obviously laws tend to be very relaxed about this.

However, "glow in the dark pain" rarely does emit more than 100 lumen (which is then further scattered on distance), often only like 30-50 lumen max. So actually they could be a much better alternative to street lights in terms of light pollution.

Now right now we do not have a good powder that would last the entire night. And then there is the other issue: Because lighting up places at night once more is one of those issues were we need to ballance ecological decision making and accessibility concerns. As night blindness is very common in both old people and folks living with diabetes. And glow in the dark stuff is often not bright enough for them and hence might endanger these people.

So in truth we would probably need to find a balance between those two aspects of life.

Something we should definitely do, though, is return to the warm street lights, which lead to less light pollution overall.

@jettewing oh right i forgot americans don't say torch it's a flashlight, it's like about 1000 lumens I believe? so it can light up anything in like a 300ft distance. It comes in handy I lit up an entire graveyard with it once in the middle of the night when my friend lost their ring and we needed to look for it if you want fire tho I do also carry a zippo, but it doesn't go on my carabiner so i've been thinking about switching it for a sailor's or match lighter bottle opener gets use often, probably like half of the times I'm out? technically don't really need it because I can open bottles with just my ring, but I do not like scratching my rings so I have two that I switch around they're like palm sized? one folds out into pliers & the other into scissors, they both do have knives in them but I also have a seperate lil knife but the knife is only an occasional thing depending on where I'm going because ya know laws I don't think it's that heavy? but idk if i'm just used to it so shrug Pill capsule is so fucking handy would recommend it has saved me so many times when I've forgotten to take my meds before I left the house

What's that uplighter? (lumens, kelvin, distribution polar?)

it's a Magneto LED Lantern, ultra-cheap battery lantern with an array of 24 white SMD LED's running off a 4AH 6V lead acid battery. Cost optimized to hell in a very endearing way. Has a built in AC plug so you don't need an external charger, very convenient.

Claimed 1000 Lumen, no idea on colour temperature but suffice to say "cool" and it has a very basic reflector. It's very bright and runs for well over 12 hours on a charge if you run all the LED's, longer if you only run the middle column.

Very useful as easy bulk lighting while camping, almost everyone here has a couple now for lighting during blackouts, which is what it's doing in that picture.
