Thank you so much for the info. I was under the impression that those captions must have been 'alt text', but it's good that you confirmed that isn't the case.
I scrolled through the resources - thank you for those as well, thanks to the bloggers in question too - and came across a post from 2021 that pointed out tumblr desktop doesn't have alt text.
Then I realized that most people probably post gifs on desktop, and that might have been the cause of those captions. I went to try it on my own blog, and indeed, on mobile alt text is right there, but desktop tumblr just has some other description box. Not sure what the point of that is then.
But, what I discovered is that there is apparently a 'new post editor' in beta, and if you switch that on while you're on desktop, you CAN add alt text when you post images on desktop, because that editor is like the mobile one. The downside of that new editor is that I don't think you can customize it as a gifset with multiple columns, like giffers often like to do. And if you make a post with the old desktop method, you cannot edit it on mobile either (to try and give it alt text afterward), because that gives an error message. So I suppose that might be the issue with alt text on desktop-posted gifsets. The desktop and mobile posting formatting doesn't seem to be very aligned yet.
Sorry if this was an unnecessarily long explanation, I just wanted to share my trial-and-error discoveries haha. Which I looked into thanks to your response, so I'm very thankful once again, I've learned a lot.
I mostly use twitter (which recently made alt text easier to add), so I hadn't quite considered the advantages of more unlimited descriptions on tumblr, or the pitfalls of alt text, on tumblr or in general. I'm gonna try to be more mindful of this in the future. Thank you again!
Really happy to have been able to help! its cool hearing your tinkering, helps me understand where people are coming from & why xyz happened etc!! its so weird how piecemeal tumblr is about features, maybe they can reduce that jank at some point lol. but im glad you got it figured out and that you went through the resources and everything to learn stuff!!
i used to use twitter and alt text was such a pain, great to hear that theyre trying to make it better :)!

House Calls (2/2 )
Hannibal (TV)
This part took much longer than the first. The muse eluded me for quite some time but it has finally returned! And the fact that this beautiful gifset from the show is making the rounds again certainly helped. ❤❤ Shoutout to @mongooseblues for inspiration for and assistance with this fic! A small note for those that read part 1, I'm retconning the fact that Hannibal had a digital thermometer that beeps. He would definitely have a mercury one.
Read part 1 here. (Recommended, it is referenced quite a few times in part 2)
Read my other works here (works best on desktop) (Also on AO3)
My asks are always open for prompts!
For the second time in one week, Will Graham was awoken by the phone ringing. Granted, a week ago it had woken him because it rang at an unusually early hour. This time it woke him because he was still getting over the godawful bug he'd caught, and he was going to bed earlier and sleeping in later.
He fumbled for the device and picked it up with a groggy " H'llo?"
"Will, it's Hannibal." The doctor paused to clear his throat roughly. "I'm sorry to wake you, but I have a favor to ask of you, if you're up to it." There was a strange noise on the other end of the line, a kind of shuffling noise-- or perhaps a sniffle?
"Sure," Will said with a yawn and a sniffle of his own, rubbing his eyes. "I've been feeling pretty good since yesterday. I can help with whatever you need."
"That's very promising. As to the favor...  It appears I've left my medical bag at my office." Here he had to stop to clear his throat again and cough before he continued. "I was wondering if you would be able to collect it for me and bring it to my home. I'm… well, it seems I've caught your illness and I don't believe it would be wise for me to leave the house."
By this time, Will had slid to sit on the edge of the bed as he listened, stifling further yawns. The damn flu still had him feeling so unbelievably tired and groggy.
"I'll head out right away," Will replied, rubbing his face. "And… I'm really sorry to have put you in this position, Dr. Leh--Hannibal. I never meant to get you sick."
"Occupational hazard, and I don't regret any of my actions concerning your care. But I appreciate your assistance in getting my bag. I will see you soon I hope."
"See you soon." Will ended the call with a small sigh. Now he felt guilty *and* tired. He was almost glad there was something he could do for the doctor to help assuage his own conscience.
Less than an hour later, Will arrived at Hannibal's stately house. It had been no problem to retrieve the black leather medical bag from Hannibal's office. Due to the late hour of their therapy sessions, Will always arrived after the office front entrance was locked, so he knew the code to the building’s back door. The bag had been hidden behind a table leg and it was easy to see how Hannibal had overlooked it  Now it was simply a matter of delivering it.
 Already a bit overwhelmed to be approaching such a house, Will hesitated after mounting the porch steps. Hannibal hadn't told him what to do when he arrived. If the doctor was sleeping he didn't want to rouse him out of bed, but he didn't want to just walk in either. However, the safest option seemed to be to bite the bullet and knock. As he raised his hand to do so though, he realized the door was slightly ajar. A man like Dr. Lecter wouldn't accidentally leave a door open, no matter how ill he was. It stood to reason, then, that it had been left open for him. With more than a little trepidation, Will pushed the door open and stepped in.
The house was dim and still, and just as stately and pristine as everything else of Hannibal's. Will heard the sound of a harpsichord from somewhere inside. Hannibal was awake, then. At least that was something.
Will followed the sounds of the music, which led him into the cavernous kitchen. The stainless steel appliances were silent and eerie without Hannibal's bustling presence giving them life. The music was louder now, seemingly coming from the next room, and echoing slightly against the polished surfaces. A strange sixth sense kept Will from calling out that he had arrived, as if there was a spell on the house that didn't want to be broken. Will paused before he approached the corner that turned into the next room. As he did, the music stopped abruptly, and instead a different noise punctuated the air:
"HrrrrRRISHyuu! ErrrrRREISH-shooo! ISSSHH-chuhh! Hh'rrrsshh'CHHOOF!"
It was of course Hannibal who had sneezed. Logically Will knew this was to be expected when a person was sick. Yet it seemed so strange to hear such a mundane noise from such an extraordinary person. It was as if he'd accidentally witnessed something exceedingly private.
Still, the sneezing had broken the spell. The doctor said something in Lithuanian that sounded suspiciously like swearing, then began to blow his nose. As he did this, Will retreated several steps and reentered the kitchen more noisily:
"Dr. Lecter! I'm here! I've got your bag!"
"I'm in the study," came the congested reply, annexed by a chesty cough.
Will found the man where he said, seated in front of the instrument as he tended to his nose. Yet still, the doctor tried to smile warmly upon seeing him, though his shoulders had a limp sag to them, and he shivered as he sniffled into his handkerchief. He was wearing a fine blue silk robe with a plain white tee shirt and blue plaid pajama pants, neat but still a far cry from his usual suits. His hair was combed but lacked the crisp, styled look it usually had, hanging more naturally around his face. His eyes were fever-bright, and his cheeks were flushed from the same. He looked overall rundown and quite unwell.
Will handed him the black leather bag right away. Hannibal took it, looking grateful.
"Thank you so much for coming, Will. I didn't know who else to call." His voice was husky and thick, more than hinting at a miserable sore throat.
"No problem. But what are you doing out here? I thought the reason I fetched this was because you were too sick to get out of bed."
"I'm really not very ill. I was merely trying to avoid getting anyone else ill by my going out. But you've already had this illness, so you are safe from infection, which is why I thought to call you."
"That's logical I suppose," said Will wryly. "You look pretty sick to me, though."
"I assure you I'm fie- fine…. '' Hannibal quickly disappeared behind the handkerchief again, his breath hitching to sneeze. His shoulders leapt violently several times, and the motion made his hair fall across his forehead. However, any other sneeze side effects were thoroughly stifled into silence. After finishing the fit, Hannibal wiped his nose and flipped his hair back again with a toss of his head. Noting how familiar the doctor seemed to be with the gesture, Will could only guess at the number of sneezing fits he had had prior to this one.
Seeing the poor man’s sinuses take such abuse from the forceful stifles though made Will's own still-congested sinuses start dripping in sympathy. He hastily pulled out a tissue and wiped his nose.
"Ah, but you are still ill yourself. Where are my manners? I'll make us both tea." Hannibal quickly stood, but staggered before he could take a step, a hand going to his temple.
"Dr. Lecter--!" Will was at his side in a moment to steady him, one hand on the doctor's arm and the other at his back, just as Hannibal had steadied him earlier in the week. Will was prepared to do whatever was needed to keep Hannibal upright, though his swaying made Will more than a little nervous, for Hannibal was much taller than he, and would more than likely take them both down if he fell.
Thankfully, the doctor quickly righted himself, pulling away from Will's grasp. "Forgive me, I stood up too quickly." Dr. Lecter cleared his throat harshly, rubbing a palm across his eyes.
"Are you sure you--"
"I'm fine, Will. Now, tea." He strode away to the kitchen, effectively ending the conversation, as was his talent.
Will held his tongue for the time being and silently followed, sitting at the kitchen island while Hannibal puttered around making tea. The silence was companionable, only broken by the doctor's soft sniffles and coughs. At one point though, the doctor was overcome with a nasty coughing fit that bent him over at the waist as he grasped the countertop for balance. When the barking coughs subsided and he could breathe relatively normally once more, he flipped his hair back into place yet again and proceeded with what he was doing as if nothing had happened. Will noted all of this without comment.
Once the tea was poured, Hannibal seated himself beside Will, and they sipped together in continued silence. Will found it odd, though not unpleasant, to be sitting next to Hannibal without speaking, for their usual interactions dictated that conversation was necessary. Will found the quiet enjoyable. Yet Hannibal could not relax, for he was forced to tend to another harsh bout of coughing, turned away from Will and muffled into his elbow. His lungs sounded as if they were trying to tear their way out of his chest. Will could only look on in concern, and it was several long moments before he quieted.
"My apologies, Will," the doctor rasped as soon as he was able, the exertion having turned his face an even deeper shade of red.
"You don’t need to apologize. But you sound sick. And you look like you're running a fever. You should be in bed."
"I rest better down here with my music and my cooking. I couldn't lie in bed all day."
"I don't think you should do any cooking. You're shaking."
The doctor quickly hid his hands, which were indeed trembling with chills. "Even so. I find it hard to rest in bed during the day. I have trouble getting settled. It's too… quiet I suppose." He sniffled wetly, and was forced to dab at his nose with his handkerchief.
"Hmm." Will thought for a moment, studying his own hands, currently wrapped around his mug. "I suppose I have the same problem. And it's worse when you're not feeling well. But you helped alleviate that for me when I was sick." Will met the doctor's eyes, reddening slightly. "You should lie down after we're done with tea… and if you want, I'll stay with you for a while... If you think it'll help, I mean."
Hannibal regarded him in his penetrating way. "Are you that worried about my health, Will?"
"You're sick, Dr. Leh-- Hannibal. And I know how bad this flu is. I don't want to see you get worse."
Hannibal was quiet for a moment, aside from another moist sniffle. "That is very kind of you to offer. I suppose you are right. Some rest would perhaps do me good."
Will nodded. "When we're finished, I'll stay here and do these dishes while you go get settled. I'll come see you as soon as I'm done. But let me know if there's anything else you need."
Hannibal gave a tiny smile. "Thank you, Will." With that, he obediently swallowed the last few gulps of tea and stood, moving toward the back of the house.
"Hannibal?"
The doctor turned.
"You don't… have to keep pretending you're fine. If you are pretending, I mean. I know how badly you're probably feeling better than anyone. You don't need to fake anything for my sake."
Will watched as Hannibal's shoulders slumped almost imperceptibly--a thin crack in the veneer. The sick man gave the barest of nods, then proceeded on to what Will assumed was his bedroom.
Will felt quite out of his element in more ways than one as he cleaned the dishes from their tea. Having no idea where anything went, he left it all out on a towel to dry. Once the kitchen was as clean as he could make it, he steeled himself to go check on his therapist.
The master bedroom was as luxurious as the rest of the house, and Will did his best not to gawk or make comparisons between this and his own tiny house. Hannibal had hung up his robe and was huddled in bed. He wasn't fully lying down, but was propped up against a stack of pillows, his breathing noticeably thick and raspy in the silent room. As Will expected, lying down evidently made the doctor feel the full impact of his symptoms (or perhaps he was simply done pretending). Hearing Will enter, he turned his head, lethargically opening heavy-lidded eyes. Against the cream sheets, the contrast between his pallor and fever flush was even more striking.
"It seems I'm more unwell than I thought," Hannibal murmured with a cough. "This is why I wanted to avoid lying down."
Will made a sympathetic sound. "That means you *need* to be lying down then. Have you taken your temperature recently? If not, we should."
Hannibal glanced at the medical bag he'd brought up with him. "The only thermometer I own is in there, so I have been unable to."
"A doctor that doesn't own a thermometer?" Will chuckled, moving to the bag. "I wouldn't have expected that."
"I do own one. I've never seen the need to own two."
Will deigned not to reply as he rummaged through the bag, quickly finding what he needed. He shook down the mercury as he returned to Hannibal's side. Hannibal held out his hand to take it, then shakily inserted it under his tongue. He leaned back to stare at the ceiling while Will stared at the floor, hands in his pockets.
Will waited what felt like an awkwardly long time before he finally shuffled his feet and cleared his throat. "How long does it take to get a reading? I've never--"
Hannibal held up a hand and waited a bit longer, then removed the device from his mouth, glanced at it, and handed it to Will without comment.
Seeing the reading, Will gave a low whistle. 104.1… that's high, Hannibal."
"My body temperature is always above average. This is more pronounced when I'm ill."
"Do you have some medicine? You should probably take something. Or do you want a cool rag?"
"I have just taken medication." The doctor gestured to his nightstand with a thick sniffle where there was a small collection of unmarked pill bottles. "And there's no need for cooling methods. A fever is a natural physiological response to infection. Nothing to be alarmed about." He swiped at his nose with his handkerchief, stifling a cough.
Will was skeptical, but before he could respond, Hannibal jerked forward at the waist, pressing the handkerchief to his face again:
"Gghnxt! Kppshht!"
The expression on the doctor’s face indicated that he could have (and maybe should have) kept sneezing, but he harshly pinched his nose with a wet squelch and blew, forcing the tickle to subside.
Will sighed and shook his head, then made a face upon noticing the state of the handkerchief Hannibal was using.
"That handkerchief is...sodden. It's practically dripping. I'll get you a fresh one. Where do you keep them?"
"I only have 3 others and they are in worse shape than this one. I've rather been running through them."
Will chuckled. "I can't imagine why." He rummaged through his pockets, finally producing a nearly full, cellophane-wrapped travel pack of Kleenex which he handed to the doctor.
Hannibal made a face. "I despise using these."
"I'm not sure you have an option right now. These have to be better than your soaking wet cloth ones."
"Debatable," Hannibal muttered. Still, he shook one out and gingerly brought it to his face. He gave several thick, gurgling blows, productive to the point of starting to disintegrate the tissue. Seeing this, Hannibal made another face.
"You really need to use 2 or 3 of those at a time," Will said, trying not to laugh. "But let me get you a trash can."
"There is one in the master bathroom," Hannibal croaked, looking peeved and sounding more congested than ever.
Will quickly fetched the bin while Hannibal tried again to blow his nose, using 4 Kleenex this time. The 2nd round of blowing was equally productive. When he was finished, Will held the bin out and Hannibal tossed the tissues in as if he were tossing in a dead rat.
"This is most unsanitary Will," Hannibal muttered with a slushy sniffle, yet still pulling out more to continue wiping his streaming nostrils.
Will only chuckled. Hannibal was breathing slightly easier now, but his eyes were heavier than ever.
"You should sleep, Dr--Hannibal. You don't have to stay awake for my sake. I'll be here when you wake up."
The doctor nodded, obediently closing his eyes with a sigh.
Will didn't expect such a quick response, and for a moment he watched the doctor to ensure he was truly going to sleep. When it appeared he was, Will perched on a nearby chair, unsure what else to do. It seemed he was to be staying with Hannibal in the most literal sense, for he wasn’t about to go wandering around this house by himself.
Half an hour passed, the minutes dragging slowly. The doctor lay perfectly still the entire time, but Will knew he wasn't sleeping. His frame was too alert. Meanwhile Will, with nothing to do except scroll through his phone and listen to Hannibal's deep breathing, was struggling to stay awake and wishing he too had a bed. Killing time was only making him more groggy, and his head was beginning to ache.
Getting fed up with it, Will went with his instincts and tried something else. Swallowing a yawn and rubbing his eyes, he navigated to the e-reader app on his phone and pulled up one of his favorite novels. Clearing his throat, he began to read aloud: "The year 1866 was signalised by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and puzzling phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten…."
As soon as there was another sound in the room, Hannibal began to visibly relax, angling his face toward Will even as he got more comfortable in the bed, though his eyes never opened. Slowly, slowly he sank deeper into the pillows as Will read on. Will sensed he was trying to follow the story, but it seemed the doctor's fatigue was overwhelming, especially since Will was trying to make his voice as soothing as possible. Within another 30 minutes, Hannibal's hand had gone limp around the Kleenex he was holding as he softly snored, sleeping at last.
Will finished the chapter he was on, just to be sure the sick man wouldn't wake again, before he finally closed the book. His mouth was very dry and he needed a glass of water. Before he left the room though, he turned on the white noise machine he'd noted near the bed (he had a similar one in his own room), hoping some kind of continued noise would help Hannibal sleep longer. Will then tiptoed to the kitchen, pouring himself a huge glass of water right away. As he sat and drank it, he thought about what else he should do, for he didn't want to just continue sitting around.
"What do you do for someone when they're sick?" he murmured to himself. Another moment later, he answered himself: "Make them soup, I guess."
Hannibal's soup had been wonderful, but Will was no chef. He could prepare many basic things, but spices and seasonings, and thus soups, eluded him. He cringed at the thought of preparing something from scratch for a culinary master like Dr. Lecter.
However, another idea occurred to him, and he smiled to himself as he considered it. It might work, but he would need to run an errand. He stood right away and strode to the front door, wanting to go and be back as quickly as possible. He only hoped Hannibal would sleep the whole time he was gone, for Will had promised to be there when he woke, and he intended to keep that promise.
~~~~~~~~~~
Hannibal didn't wake until many hours later, and Will was indeed at his side when he did. It was Hannibal's treacherous nose that did it. Will had noted subtle signs of him nearing consciousness again for a while, but the final straw was an uncontainable volley of sneezes:
"HRRIIZZSHH-uh! HhURRSHH-shuh! hrrRIIIZZSHHD! Hhh-KKRRCHHSSHHooo!"
The sighed exhale that followed bordered on a groan as that doctor shakily grabbed the tissues at his side and tended to his cherry-red nose yet again with several gurgling blows. Will had been at his side from the first sound, looking for any way to be useful. Eventually Hannibal met his gaze, taking a moment to survey the younger man.
"You look tired, Will."
Will huffed a cheerless laugh. "You haven't doctored me enough yet this week?"
"A physician's nature doesn't change just because he's ill," Hannibal sniffled. "And you've also been ill. I don't want you to overtax yourself on my account."
"I'm fine. But you look tired too. How are you feeling?"
Hannibal didn't reply immediately, seemingly taking inventory. A shaky breath caused him to cough harshly before he could speak, and Will winced in sympathy.
"I feel thoroughly disgusting. And ill," Hannibal mumbled through congested-sounding consonants. "My head and chest feel achingly thick. Heavy." He put his own wrist to his forehead for a moment. "Feverish."
"Here, you need to drink." Will handed the doctor a tall glass of ice water. Hannibal took it and drank it down with a grateful look, but the chill from the ice immediately caused him to cough into his fist yet again.
Will watched all of this, feeling uncomfortable. "I'm still sorry I got you sick, Hannibal. I hate seeing you like this."
Though Hannibal's eyes shone with fever, he eyed Will keenly. "This is not your fault. Illness is an expected part of the human experience. You must not blame yourself." It occurred to Will that congestion was not the only thing making Hannibal more difficult to understand--his Lithuanian accent was also far more pronounced than usual.
"I still feel terrible."
The doctor quirked an eyebrow at him, looking faintly amused. "What a coincidence. As I've just told you, so do I."
Will couldn't think how to respond, so they merely shared a wry smile. Then, without warning, Hannibal's torso whipped forward, and he exploded into another pair of thick, spraying sneezes:
"Hhht-KNNXT! hhnnxxt-CHUUHG!" Evidently his ability to stifle was weakening as his symptoms worsened. The sick doctor stayed hunched forward, blowing and wiping his raw nose for the hundredth time, looking utterly miserable as he shook the last few Kleenex from the package.
"At least that's something I can help you with," Will said, nodding at the empty wrapper. He bent down and came back up with 2 new boxes of tissues. He opened one and handed it over. Hannibal took it reluctantly.
  "Those are the best ones you can get. They should be almost like real cloth."
"I rather doubt that," Hannibal muttered. "But I thank you nonetheless. They are sorely needed."
"And I plan to take your cloth ones home and wash them and bring them back tomorrow. Including the one I still have. So you'll only have to deal with these for a bit longer," Will said with a little grin.
The doctor's eyes lit up in pleasure. "I would be most grateful for that."
"Is there anything else you'd like? Either now or tomorrow?"
Hannibal again coughed into his first before he spoke, sounding thoroughly phlegmy. "I should likely take some food. I'm feeling weaker than I ought to."
It was Will's turn to light up. "There's another coincidence… I have food ready for you. Some soup and stuff."
"I thought I smelled something simmering, even through this dreadful congestion. That explains why I'm suddenly hungry," Hannibal said with a thick sniffle, leaning back into his pillows. "Thank you for thinking of it. Though I would hardly call your predicting my needs a coincidence, but rather proof of your capabilities as a caretaker. Just something to think on.” The doctor gave him a pointed look even as he sniffled again.
Will was now embarrassed and quickly moved to the doorway. "I'll go bring some for you now."
Hannibal let the subject drop and nodded weakly, closing his eyes as he massaged the bridge of his nose. Will hurried to the kitchen and ladled a bowl of chicken soup from the pot warming on the stove. He had the ingredients for grilled cheese ready as well, and a hot griddle waiting, so it was only a matter of minutes before he had a fresh, hot sandwich to accompany the soup. As a final touch, he peeled an orange and placed it on the plate with the sandwich, then grabbed the bottle of soda he'd bought, and transported it all to the sick room on a large tray.
Hannibal was clearly a bit taken aback upon seeing it all. "This is quite the spread, Will," he croaked. "Did you make all of this?"
"Define 'make', Will chuckled. "I turned the stove on, yes."
"The soup isn't yours then?"
"It's Campbell's chicken noodle, fresh from the can. The genuine, original sick day food. Grilled cheese made with the finest Kraft singles of course. An orange for the Vitamin C, no seeds. For the drink, we have ginger ale, the beverage that can cure any ailment. And for dessert, if you so desire, we also have hot chocolate."
Hannibal was speechless for a moment. Then, a tiny smile began to play across his features. "This is ...really something, Will. I haven't been served a meal quite like this in a very long time. I can't even remember the last time I had a cola."
"Only the finest. Or at least the finest I could manage on short notice."
"You bought all of this just today?"
Will nodded. "This is what I used to like when I was sick. I figured I couldn't go wrong with classic comfort foods. I'm sorry I couldn't give you something higher quality. But I hope it still helps."
"Indeed." The doctor chuckled hoarsely. "This is quite satisfactory. I'm sure it will help. Thank you once again." Without further ado, the doctor dug into his feast.
To Will's surprise, the doctor easily finished not only the orange, but the soup and the sandwich as well, and seemed to enjoy them as much as could be expected. He was most skeptical of the ginger ale, but he finished half of that as well, pronouncing it "very interesting." Will also made sure he drank plenty of water to round it all out. Finally Hannibal pushed the tray away with a contented sound.
"In a practical sense, I always knew the restorative properties of chicken soup, but it's been many years since I experienced them first-hand," Hannibal managed, after blowing his streaming nose several times. "My throat and sinuses feel significantly better. As does my headache. Perhaps we should save the hot chocolate for tomorrow however, for I am comfortably full now."
Will thought he was going to say more, for he paused oddly. Instead the doctor's breath hitched violently:
"Gihh-chuuh! Chnnggh!..."
Only the first two in the fit were audible. He seemingly sneezed several more times, but he stifled them into oblivion, with only the movement of his head to indicate what was happening. Watching such forceful suppression was still painful, but it heartened Will slightly to know that Hannibal was feeling well enough after some food to worry about his dignity once more.
Finally the doctor ended his fit and fell back against the pillows with a weary sigh and a weak cough, flipping the hair off of his forehead yet again.
"That looked exhausting."
"Perhaps it would have been if I weren't exhausted to begin with," Hannibal mumbled, an arm over his face.
"Then you should sleep more."
Hannibal uncovered his eyes to meet Will's. "It would be terribly rude of me to sleep again while you are here."
Then I'll get ready to go. I'll clean up all of this then head out. Let you have some peace. But like I said, I'll be back tomorrow with your handkerchiefs." Will grabbed the tray, preparing to carry it to the kitchen.
"Will?"
Will paused, turning around.
Hannibal looked slightly imploring. "If it's not too much trouble, would you mind reading a bit more before you go? I was quite enjoying the story."
Will couldn't help but smile. "It would be my pleasure."
ー CREATOR TAG MEME:
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
tagged by @p-irozhki thanks for tagging me Rissa!! Sorry I took so long to get to it lolll. I know it’s already like a week into 2021, but everything on the list will be from last year lol
The Kissing Journals: I was in a real writing slump at the beginning of the year and I spent a loooong time just slowly working on this and enjoying taking my time with it. I really enjoyed just writing it all at once and then posting the chapters weekly and already feeling at peace with it before I even posted it and it turned out to be one of my favorite things I worked on all year. Now if only the other tsukkiyama ideas I have would come as easily loll
The “connect” coloring/edit (chp 402): First of all, I completely sobbed when I read this page in the manga and I think it’s probably the single page that affected me the most of the entire series. I was still pretty new to coloring manga panels when I made this, and while I would do a few things differently if I did it again, I spent a longgg time working on this one to do it the best I could at the time and I’m still really happy with the way it turned out.
Tsukki’s character development gifset: While not one of the more technically challenging gifsets I made this year by far, it’s probably one of the ones I had the most fun with. Using that quote he says during the Shiratorizawa match and finding correlating scenes for each line of the quote was SO fun. I put a ton of thought into why each clip fit with each line n stuff and not to toot my own horn or w/e, I think I did a good job lol. And since we don’t hear Tsukki talk about himself much, it was really really cool to go through whats been animated so far and find instances where his actions have backed up how his development could be narrowed down to that single quote.
hq!! the last supper coloring (chp 369): lmao the name is kind of a joke, but it is the last meal we see them having almost all together, and this is when I think I started to really feel comfortable with coloring and I started to nail down a lot of the techniques I’d been trying. I also had a lot fun playing around with the steam effects and trying to just subtly make the gif aspect of it noticeable.
Hinata’s receive desktop wallpaper: The most recent coloring I’ve done, and probably the best one skill wise. I spent FOREVER editing out all the screentones from his jersey and I’m happy I did. My understanding of shading has gotten a lot better and actually taking the time to get rid of the screentones let me practice some shading even more (definitely still not perfect, but an improvement). Plus, I just love the simplicity of this one and how bright I got it without it hurting your eyes - it’s still my own wallpaper right now and I love it.
detailed giffing + basic coloring tutorial for beginners
so a lot of gif/coloring tutorials are pretty outdated or not that detailed & i wanted to put my own out there! in this:
how to get the screencaps for your gifs
how to make a general gif
basic coloring (no psds here, it just gives you a basic idea for making colors pop and look nice. you can look up how to use psds, but i prefer making my own for every gif as it’s much more personal, gratifying, and creative. there’s nothing wrong with using psds as long as you don’t claim them as your own, it’s just not my personal thing)
how to save a gif
we’ll be going from this:
Tumblr media
to this
Tumblr media
what you need:
photoshop (cc 2019 is what i’m using, but this works with any version of photoshop really as long as you download a version with the timeline feature) i won’t add download links here since i don’t want this deleted, but you can look some up on tumblr or use the pirate bay (current url is pirateproxy.blue as of 4/29/2020) & follow the instructions there.
for windows: potplayer/kmplayer (both use literally the exact same instructions) this tutorial uses potplayer but kmplayer uses like literally the same instructions, it just doesnt work right on my computer
for mac: mplayer. this tutorial does NOT cover this so find a tutorial on tumblr on how to take screencaps with mplayer & then skip to the “how to make a general gif” section. though, again, i’m on a pc so i have no idea if this is entirely accurate for mac.
if you’re downloading from youtube: clipconverter
if you’re Definitely Legaly torrenting: utorrent + the pirate bay (again, current url is pirateproxy.blue as of 4/29/2020) or another torrent site + you should really consider getting a VPN when torrenting (i use privateinternetaccess but you can find one that suits you)
note: download an adblock of some kind, disable automatic downloads on your computer, & download an antivirus program if you want because some sites are sketchier than others! this is ESPECIALLY crucial on sites like piratebay. keep your computer safe babes.
1. screencapping
there’s several ways to get screencaps on photoshop, but this is the easiest imo and i’ve never done the whole convert video frames to layers thing. like i said, you’ll need potplayer or kmplayer. i’m using potplayer. important note: don’t accidentally download viruses here! read each screen carefully & make sure you’re not hitting accept to download any secondary programs.
1. download your .mp4/.mkv. you can go to youtube & find a clip/scene/whatever and use clipconverter to download it. just make sure you download it at 720 (or higher) as anything lower than that will give you a poor quality gif. you can also download using somewhere like the pirate bay, but for this you need utorrent & i would HIGHLY recommend using a vpn if you live in a country where torrenting copyrighted content is illegal, as your internet provider may flag your ip address if you don’t & you torrent too often.
2. download potplayer/kmplayer & get it set up
3. create a screencaps folder. i always put mine on my desktop. in your screencaps folder, make a folder for however many gifs you want in your set. i just have one for mine so:
Tumblr media
4. open up your .mp4/.mkv
Tumblr media
5. hit ctrl + g to bring up the screen capture pop-up & set your settings to these. click the button w/the three dots next to the storage option & select the folder you created for your first gif
Tumblr media
6. navigate to the scene you want to gif. when you’re there, pause it and hit the start button on the consecutive image capture screen, then play the video. how many screencaps you need depends on the size of your gif. for larger gifs (so like 540px wide gifs), you’re probably going to want to keep it below 30 frames. for smaller gifs (268px wide or less) you can maybe stretch it to 60, depending on how much coloring you add. you can always delete screencaps later though in photoshop, so don’t worry about it too much. for this gif, i only had 17 frames because the scene was really short lmao
7. go to your screencap folder you made & delete any unnecessary frames. it’ll look like this:
Tumblr media
8. repeat the process for any other gifs, making new folders in your “screencaps” folder, numbered for however many gifs you’re making. make sure to change the folder you’re loading the images into on the image capture pop up though so they don’t all go into folder 1.
2. making a simple gif (+sharpening)
1. first, you need to load your screencaps. when you open up photoshop, go to file > scripts > load files into stack
Tumblr media
2. when the window pops up, switch the “file” option to “folder”
Tumblr media
3. click browse and find your screencap folder for your first gif (in my case, desktop > screencaps > 1) once it’s all loaded, click “OK”
Tumblr media
4. it’ll take a minute to load all your screencaps into photoshop. when they do, go to the upper bar on photoshop > windows > timeline
Tumblr media
5. when the timeline bar shows up, click “create frame animation”
Tumblr media
6. hit this button and click “make frames from layers”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. hit the button again and click “reverse frames”
Tumblr media
8. click back onto your first gif. then select the rectangular marquee tool and set it to whatever gif size you want. the width for 2 small gifs next to each other is 268px, the width for full size gifs is 540px. most people use 268x150 px for gifsets of 4+
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. use the marquee tool to select what area you want for your gif, like this. it’s up to you how to crop it! get creative!
Tumblr media
10. go to image > crop
Tumblr media
11. now that your image is cropped, go to image > image size. change the size to your desired gif size (in this case 268x150). hit “OK”. then make sure it’s zoomed in to 100%
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
12. now, you COULD just save this gif, but they look way better sharpened. so you need to convert this to a smart object. to do so, first select all your layers in the righthand layer window. to select all the layers, click on your top layer, hold shift, and scroll down to your bottom layer & click on it as well while still holding shift
Tumblr media
13. next, you need to select all your frames. go back to the options button from part 6 > select all frames
Tumblr media
14. next, we’re going to create an action to make your life 100x easier when it comes to sharpening gifs in the future. to do so, go to the actions icon (may look different on different versions of photoshop, but basically just find the actions window)
Tumblr media
15. create a new action with this button. name it something. i named this one “sharpen tutorial” and hit “record”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
16. click this button to convert to video timeline
Tumblr media
17. go to filter > convert for smart objects
Tumblr media
18. go to your single created layer and right click and click duplicate layer. this helps get rid of the transparent border around the gif.
Tumblr media
19. go to filter > sharpen > smart sharpen & use these settings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
20. go to filter > blur > gaussian blur. set it to these settings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21. go to your second layer with the filters on it & right click on the gaussian blur filter to select “edit smart filter blending options” and set the opacity to 50%. you can mess around with this for different levels of sharpness. the closer to 0%, the sharper your gif will be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
22. hit the stop recording button on your sharpen action. now you’ll have an action to use next time you make a gif! after you’ve followed all the steps 1-13 you simply go to actions, click on your saved sharpening action, and hit play instead & it’ll do steps 14-21 in a few seconds. here’s a pic of the stop button on the actions window
Tumblr media
23. our gif is now sharpened! you can end with this & skip to the saving a gif section, or you can continue to coloring. here’s what we have so far.
Tumblr media
3. coloring
now on to coloring. this is pretty basic coloring and it probably won’t work if you follow my numbers exactly, as every single scene is different color + lighting wise. but this is just an example of the kind of thing you could do. basically, if you’re making vibrant gifs, you want to up the brightness + contrast + vibrance and make the colors already present pop. if you want anything more complicated (pale gifs, changing the colors to make, say, quentin’s shirt in these gifs red instead of blue), you’ll have to find other tutorials or experiment on your own. learning how to color & finding your style takes time! you can download psds if you want, but imo those kinda take the fun out of making gifs? that’s just me though.
after each step, i’ll show you what the gif looks like.
1. i usually start with a curves layer. i usually don’t mess with the color curve options, just this one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. next, i do a brightness/contrast layer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. next, i do a vibrance layer. make sure not to make it TOO saturated or it’ll look bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. next i do a color balance layer. this is where it really starts differing depending on what color you want your gif to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. next we move to the selective color layers, which are arguably the most powerful. here you can make colors pop, change colors, etc. it’ll take lots of practice & messing around with, but here’s what i did with this gif. this one is making yellow + blue pop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. next, i did two more selective color layers editing the blue tab to make the blue pop even more
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. i still wasn’t quite happy with it, so i added another selective color layer to edit the blacks + neutrals + greens
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. for good measure, i added one more brightness/contrast layer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. and the gif is done! however, you can play around with various adjustment layers until you’re happy. again, this is just an example of how to do basic coloring. it’s a skill like any other & takes practice. to keep consistent coloring in a gifset,
9b. you may want to make a psd of this coloring. to do so, you need to put all your adjustment layers in a folder, delete your frame layers, and click file > save as. save it as a .psd. then you can open it and drag it onto any other gifs you make, adjusting the coloring accordingly but still with the same vibes. you don’t have to do this, but it makes life easier. here’s how to use your saved psd, though obviously you’re using your own in this case and not a downloaded one.
4. saving your gif
1. on photoshop cc 2019, you go to file > export > save for web (legacy). for other versions, you can just go to file > save for web. use these settings. the gif size limit is 3mb per gif, so make sure your file size is under that. if it’s not, you’ll need to delete some frames or some adjustment layers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. now, photoshop is a bit of a pain & this gif timing will not be right. so you need to open your newly saved gif. then you hit this button + select all frames
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. click this button & select “other”. tumblr gifs are typically .05-.08. my photoshop is glitchy and i have to set mine to .1-.15 or they’re WAY too fast. but usually, go with .05-.08 unless yours ends up glitching too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. save it like you did the first time and ta-da! you’ve made a gif!
I really wouldn't mind you aiding me with some tutorials love
giffing tutorial/resources
hi anon! sorry it took me so long to answer. i figured this might be helpful for others out there who have asked me similar questions, so i’ve compiled a pretty comprehensive list of tutorials/resources. idk about others but when i was new to giffing, it took me a lot of painful effort to go around and look for resources, so i’m putting it all here to make it a little easier!
i download videos using 4k video downloader. it will download very good quality 1080p videos in .mp4 format. if you’re downloading a 4k video, make sure to change the setting option to .mkv so that you get 4k and not 1080p—for obvious reasons since you want the highest quality.
i rely on kpopexciting to get .ts files — which are basically raw, very high quality video files for live performances. they are much less grainy than .mp4 versions of live performances—which are the ones you’ll see uploaded to youtube. i’ve found that 4k videos (in .mkv) are just as good quality as .ts, but obviously you will rarely see live performances in 4k, so get .ts when you can!! you can also try to find .ts files on twitter, but you may have to do a lot of digging. i wish i could recommend you twitter accounts, but the ones i used to go to have been very inactive/taken down all their drives :( but this website is really nice and updated frequently so i would recommend it!
vapoursynth links + download. the reason you would use vapoursynth is to resize your gif, while maintaining the optimal quality of the gif. if you gif without vapoursynth (.ie only using photoshop), it will still be fine, but the image quality may be grainier. also, you will definitely need vapoursynth to gif .ts files —more will be explained in the tutorial i’ve linked below. i would recommend that you have a high processing/lots of ram/newer desktop or laptop to use vapoursynth so that 1, your computer isn’t fried and 2, your vapoursynth process will go a lot faster. i am using a 2017 macbook pro for all my work, and it runs pretty well, but my laptop still gets pretty hot so just make sure you’re not running a million things in the background while using adobe products and vapoursynth lol. i used a pretty old and beat up 2011 model macbook air back then, and i will say that yes vapoursynth worked and ran on it, but it took much longer, and basically fried the laptop’s battery (aka i had to get the battery changed twice and the laptop would die randomly) but issok it was a school borrowed laptop so i didn’t feel too bad lol. im just saying this as a precaution, to preserve the health of your electronic devices!! but don’t be afraid to use vapoursynth! you should still try it at least once.
thank you to @realstraykids for this super detailed, really nice tutorial! it includes how and where to download videos, how to gif using vapoursynth, using photoshop, comparisons, coloring, and pretty much all you need to know. 10/10 would recommend
thank you to @dreamcolouring for this lifesaver!!! the best and easiest way to blur out unwanted captions/objects in your gifs. i recommend doing this step after converting your frames to video timeline and before you do sharpening and coloring. another tip i’ll add is to feather the selection you’ve made right before you click on “add vector mask” —this will make sense once you’ve read through the tutorial. feathering it will make the blurred spot less noticeable and more subtle.
i use this generator to create gradient colored captions! copy and paste your text, then select the colors you want. generate the code, and copy it. change the settings of the text editor on your post to HTML. paste the code, preview, and voila! add elements <blockquote>,<b>,<i>, etc as needed. see more on colored captions in this tutorial by @kylos --i believe op mentioned a different and better color generator but for some reason it won’t work for me :( hopefully it works for u! basically same idea as the previous generator i mentioned.
my own mini tutorial/workflow process of making gifs. this includes working with a .ts file, vapoursynth, photoshop, coloring, watermarking, etc. and a few of my own tips below:
if you are working with an .mp4, you do not have to make any changes to the preprocessor/denoise filters/sharpening in the resizing part of vapoursynth—it doesn’t make that big of a difference if you do. but if you are working with a .ts file, definitely do make those changes,, that’s the whole reason you have vapoursynth. with an .mp4, i like to use vapoursynth to just resize, but i don’t add any additional settings. i use smart sharpen in photoshop to sharpen it, which is pretty good on it’s own (at least in photoshop 2020!).
my rule of thumb is to do add .02 seconds when i am setting frame delay. so if when you first import the frames, they are at 0.04 seconds, i usually change them to 0.06. of course, this is my personal taste—you can make all your gifs faster or slower depending on how you want em to look.
if you are on a mac, you can screen record by pressing Command+Shift+5 (it’s a shortcut to quicktime screen recording). I only screen record for things like the beyond live concert or other live streamed events. the image quality of the screen recording, in my experience, is actually pretty good. when you gif the screen recording however, you may notice that it adds extra frames that you don’t need. by that i mean duplicate frames. you could keep the duplicate frames but that just means the size of your gif is going to be much bigger (keep in mind the limit is 8mb). in order to remove those duplicates, my only solution has been to remove them manually (by holding Command while selecting), or when you are importing the video to frames, select the option to “limit to every 2 frames”—but this method will be less precise and still not as good as manually removing frames. if you remove the duplicate frames, this means you will need to set the frame delay even slower, to make up for lost frames. in my experience, fps(frames per second) and frame delay work in conjunction. so for example, if i delete every other frame because they are duplicates,  but the starting frame delay is 0.02, i am now going to change it to something like 0.05 (so i added 0.03 seconds rather than my usual 0.02). if the duration length and the image dimensions of the gif are short/small, feel free to keep the duplicate frames in—i only delete duplicate frames in order to keep my gif under the 8mb limit. then, if you keep the duplicate frames in, continue with your standard frame delay preferences.  now that i’m writing this im realizing this might not make a lot of sense lol.. but don’t worry about it for now and if you run into trouble w screen recorded gifs then you can come back to this for reference. again, this is only my experience recording on a mac—it may be a lot different if you use a screen recording program or are on a pc.
i don’t really use .psd templates because i like to give every gif/gifset it’s own unique coloring—so i remake the coloring every time, but if you get into a rhythm it’s pretty easy. there are a lot of nice coloring tutorials out there, too! my personal coloring adjustments in order: levels, exposure, color balance, selective color (if needed), vibrance, photo filter (if needed), color lookup (i use 2strip most often and i put it on ‘color’ blending mode). don’t forget to adjust the opacities and fills of the ‘color lookup’ adjustment layer in case it’s too strong. go back to correct each adjustment layer as needed. then, when you’re done and satisfied, group all those layers, copy the group (you can do an easy command+c), and paste it onto the next gif you’re working on for easy workflow.
if for some reason you can’t see the frames when you import your layers/video, it’s likely because your ‘timeline’ window isn’t showing up. just go to the window menu on photoshop, go to the bottom and you’ll see ‘timeline.’ make sure it has a check next to it.
i recommend watermarking your gifs because a lot of people like to repost tings these days 😠 - so make sure u got your brand on it! i keep my watermark saved to my ‘libraries’ in photoshop so it’s ready when i need it. i use the blending mode ‘overlay’ and adjust the opacity, but if you don’t want to do that you can also add a stroke/shadow to your watermark/do all sorts.
tag #nctinc for your nct creations and #jenonet for your jeno creations!!
here’s my own mini tutorial (well not much of a tutorial ig more like a work process vid?): took about ten minutes including the time to search and download the video (but i didn’t record that part i trust yall know how to do that), vapoursynth, and exporting. i hope this helps somewhat! feel free to ask more questions whenever :)
youtube
keep in mind that giffing takes a lot of patience, energy, and experience—so don’t worry if it takes you a bit to figure things out or if your gifs don’t turn out the way you want them to the first time around. we all start at the same place and all run into problems. i know giffing can sound intimidating and seem like a lot of work, but i promise, once you get into a routine, giffing is going to happen in minutes—and you’ll get beautiful gifs. have fun! 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey y’all!! new gifset means a post of me blabbering about what happened behind the scenes <33
to start off, let’s talk about the above gifs. y’all, i had TWENTY EIGHT (28) CLIPS TO MAKE GIFS OF 😳 now, that is by far the MOST i have had for any show i’ve ever giffed (it’s the mint tall illness xx) so there was a lot to consider. i knew i wanted some key scenes to be made (edrisa drinking that four loko, fire consuming sarah, and the eyeball) so i worked myself around those. there are other scenes that i wanted to gif but just...couldn’t fit them all and may be used for future gifs (if i get inspired). these two above were made to be in the original gifset but ultimiately got cut because:
the ainsley gif has very few frames and moved too fast for my liking despite it being at 5 speed like the rest of them. typically i don’t like really short gifs with less than 35 frames but sometimes i do make exceptions (like my gifset for 2x02) -was going to be a “warm” gif
 i LOVED this scene between malcolm and edrisa when she gets on the table because she is trying to come down from a caffeine high. when there is no brightwell content, i LOVE a good maldrisa scene <3 really wanted to include this one but i wasn’t too sure of the coloring :(( i felt that it was a bit too dark and i knew the other psd that i used (yes, i used two psds hehe) wouldn’t help much. so, ultimately, with a HEAVY heart, i had to drop it from the lineup -was going to be a “cool” gif
the blue and gold theme was by accident. i had gotten new psds to prepare for this week and one of the new ones amplified the blues of dark scenes (like the entirety of prodigal son) and really liked how it looked on the edrisa gif. then i started to see the pattern of the scenes i picked (cold, warm, cool, warm) and decided to run with it. like i said above, i did use two psds and the other psd is for warmer scenes that the main psd couldn’t really do them much justice. the three gifs with the other psd? you know my fave game :3c answer in the tags!
like i said before, there were a LOT of scenes i wanted to use. i spent like five hours on this set? that also includes small breaks like for lunch and bathroom breaks plus i had to give photoshop some downtime aka force quitting in task manager to give it some room to breathe because there was A LOT to go through. i didn’t want to do anything fancy so i went with my new favorite framing pero i added 1 px to the height (is that right? i forget). also, i am SOOO sorry for making it a long post but i think it was truly inevitable lol.
here are some scrapped scenes:
the crime scene of the dead former debutante. i promised y’all i wouldn’t gif these crime scenes and i almost broke that promise because the scene was soo interesting
malcolm on the tail of jt and the camera follows them as malcolm talks about candy. REALLY fun scene that i would’ve loved to gif but simply had no room on the roster :((
the gilessica scene <3 i wanted to put at least one of my fave pairings in there pero there were some other really good scenes i knew others would find more interesting
*there were other clips i saved that are self-indulgent and for me for future headers or sidebar gifs ;)
i wrote down four quotes, one spoken by gil and the rest were spoken by malcolm. i would’ve used the ainsley quote at the end about how she has a reason to be a bit reckless because it is a solid quote but i felt like it would be overused so i didn’t. i knew i should’ve bolded what sarah said to differentiate somebody else is talking pero like...this was my fourth? fifth reupload? because i kept messing up in the tags and wasn’t sure of the order plus there was a gif that didn’t look right so i had to go back and edit it again (i won’t tell u which one that is my secret shh). everything was kinda asjdksajkdlsa like it was getting closer to my deadline (ONCE AGAIN) so it was basically a mini crunch to get published and in the queue.
PERO I AM SOO, SO, SOOOOO PROUD OF IT!! it’s really cool and has a lot of color to it!! i even went out of my comfort zone in terms of coloring. yes, warmth is my jam y’all know this but the other more intense blue coloring was a huge step. also, don’t look so closely at them because i know of at least one flaw and that particular gif looks better on mobile (surprisingly) pero desktop is like LOOK AT IT!! LOOK AT IT!!! anyways, every note is like a blessing, and i am always overwhelmed with joy and happiness whenever i read each tag !! :)
An Annotated Mass Effect Playthrough, Prologue
I don’t know how long I’ll end up doing this for, but I thought I’d give it a shot.
I try to play the Mass Effect games at least once every other year now, last time I did ME1 was early 2018 so it’s time.  Also, doing a bunch of work on Masseffectsaves back in the fall kinda gave me the ME-playing bug.  It’s nice not feeling like the site is horribly behind where it should be anymore.
I’ve been excited to play through now since there’s now a ME1 Recalibrated mod, and though the changes are relatively minor compared to 2 and 3, I’m glad they’re there.
I’m also using Mass Effect Overwritten which fixes a bunch of stuff in the codex / subtitles (not that I play with subtitles on but you know).  Then FPS Counter and Post-Processing Effects, except I turned off that mod’s color correction because I wanted the colors to be true-to-game.  (But no film grain.)  And of course, MEUITM, ALOT, including the shadows redone addon, and ALOV.  The game is just so, so pretty now (for a 13 year old game!), and the shadows redone addon and ALOV are such great additions.  The cutscenes are just so much better especially.
Once again, all praise to the Modders, everyone who contributed textures to ALOT and CreeperLava for putting it together, C3Anderson for MEUITM, GiftFish and the ME#Recalibrated teams for fixing so many little bugs, etc.  It’s amazing the love and care that’s gone into the games by the fanbase after the games have come out.
I’m re-recording a lot of videos this time, and screenshotting, since the game is now about as perfectly pretty graphic/texture wise as it’s going to get both mod-wise and hardware-wise. Now that I have a 2060RTX and 32 gigs of RAM I mean... it’s not going to get any better.
I know not many people go digging for Mass Effect screenshots anymore, so I’m not sure I’m going to upload to Flickr anymore unless there are people who actually want me to.   Mostly I’m doing these for me, for my rotating desktop wallapers, I’ll probably be replacing a lot of my older screenshots for these, and for inspiration for photosets, even though getting any notes on tumblr anymore is like pulling teeth. =\
People do still visit my crazy extensive screenshot collections on Flickr, though.  Sometimes I feel like deleting everything up there though, in exchange for one big gallery of a perfect playthrough of each game.  Maybe I’ll end up doing that here, I don’t know.
But yeah, expect photosets and gifsets for awhile. :)  Already have one queued.  If you’re not interested, blacklisting Mass Effect or “annakie’s mass effect stuff” will work.
I’ll be doing, once again, my canon Shepard (Female/Paragon/Vanguard/Spacer Sole Survivor/ faithful all the way to Kaidan).  Maybe after this I can redo other Shepards, but it feels almost like wasting time if I’m not spending time with the Shepard and Kaidan that I love the best, you know?
Maybe this will be the last time to play this Shepard before a Remaster comes out.  A girl can dream, right?  But even if that never happens, the modders have taken the games that extra mile so they look and feel the best they can.
7, 8, 10 and 17 for "Ask something to an editor" :)
7. what's the edit you're most proud of? - from recent ones i think my color gifsets, especially the ones with Lilith, because it’s caos and we all know what a nightmare to color is that show :D also this gold missy gifset. while i noticed the mistake on one of them only later, and i know i could actually fix it, it was too late tho... i still love that set a lot. i enjoy making those gifsets lately. i love playing with colors ^^
8. how many edits did you make and didn't end up posting? - a lot :D there’s around 50 in my drafts that i have not posted at the moment... because i don’t like something in them and maybe i will fix it or remake them, and some i just need to finish :D and a lot from my drafts i removed recently because i don’t think i could make anything better and i did not like the result.
10. is your material for editing organized? - i clean and organize everything like once in every few months and then create a mess until i do that again in a few months :D
17. how have you learnt to edit? - i think i wanted to put kristen bell and allison mack on one picture to put as my desktop background :D so i got ps, cut out them and put on bg i liked, it was total crap, i was so proud lmao and then i learned to make icons and banners for smallville forum, and eventually i learned to make manips, then i wanted animated signature for forum and that’s how i started making gifs :D my first animation was horrible lex gif, but it was not a moving gif from a scene or something, it was just lex and some animated lighting on the background on lexcorp lol i did it by tutorial i found on the said sv forum. but all of those tutorials were sooooo hard to understand, i gave up eventually and just started doing whatever the hell i wanted myself, mostly also because i could never find a tutorial for what i wanted to do... well, back then i did not know what is called something :D i would just go and click on everything until i figure out what it does and how to use it, but tutorials are good now, because i understand them and sometimes i watch or read them on tumblr when they catch my attention.
BASIC COMPREHENSIVE GIF TUTORIAL
Tumblr media
This is my first full fledged tutorial so please let me know if anything is unclear or if you have any questions.
REQUIREMENTS (or at least what I use to make gifs):
VLC Media Player
Photoshop CC 2018
CAPPING
So in order to create a gif you need a screencap of every frame within a sequence to make said gif, kind of given. In VLC it’s a complicated process in which you need to press a button to screencap the current frame, press another button to move to the next frame, and then continue the process until you have enough frames for the gif.
Press CTRL + P to access the VLC menu and you should see something like this.
Tumblr media
You then want to click on VIDEO on the top and navigate to the BROWSE button as seen below.
Tumblr media
How VLC works is that every screencap that you take automatically goes into your pictures folder on your desktop. By clicking browse you can create the destination where you want the screencaps to go. I usually make a folder for each gifset and then a folder for each individual gif, mostly ‘cause I’m particular about that kind of thing. Here is what my folders look like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you have all the screencaps you need or desire then comes the fun part! Gif-ing!
GIF-ING
The first thing you want to do is open up whatever version of Photoshop you have. I use Photoshop CC 2018; yes, you have to pay for it, but I think it’s worth it since I can afford it (only $9 a month) and I use it so frequently I need a reliable version. I’m sure there are cracked versions out there but please do not ask me to look for them for you, you can do some googling to find them.
The most important thing is that the TIMELINE is on your set-up. I couldn’t find a way to cap it but if you go to the top underneath WINDOW, it will be near the bottom labeled TIMELINE.
Tumblr media
Now you need all your screencaps, right? Going under FILE (on the same line as WINDOW), there should be an option called SCRIPTS toward the bottom. Hover over that and then select LOAD FILES INTO STACK.... I have this put as a shortcut, and I would highly recommend making a shortcut for it as you will be using it very frequently!
This is what you should see at this point.
Tumblr media
Click on the BROWSE button and it will open up your file folders. Navigate to where you put all your screencaps for one specific gif, you can only make one at a time, and select them all using SHIFT + CLICK. With all the screencaps loaded it will look like this.
Tumblr media
And then you can select OK. You will have to wait a while for all the caps to load, on older computers or computers with less ram it takes a much longer time, but be patient. This is what it should look like now.
Tumblr media
Click on the button at the bottom of the screen labeled CREATE VIDEO TIMELINE. And then you will click on the three little squares button in the bottom left hand corner.
Tumblr media
Then you will click on the button of the three lines (a lot of button clicking at this point), and click on the option MAKE FRAMES FROM LAYERS.
Tumblr media
I can’t get it to screencap, but after you make the frames from layers all your frames are going to be backwards so you need to click on the same button again and click on REVERSE FRAMES. Once all the frames are in the correct order, select all of them using SHIFT + CLICK and click on the upside down arrow on any of the frames.
Tumblr media
This is where you can set your delay: basically how fast or slow you want your gif to be. I always set my delay to .05 seconds. As a rule of thumb, you never want a gif faster than .03 seconds, or slower than 1 second. After that you can close up the timeline by click the three squares again in the left hand corner and now your gif looks like this.
Tumblr media
You can press the PLAY button at this point to see your gif move and see if you messed up at any point and need to go back and delete frames or change the speed. But other than that, you know have a perfectly done gif!
SIZING
Tumblr’s dimensions are weird, they used to be 500px across for a single image but now they’ve decreased the gutter and single images across are 540px. Don’t worry if this doesn’t make much sense. A good guide is this,
Tumblr media
Basically what this means if that you want a gifset with a single gif across the whole post, make the canvas size 540px. If you want the gifset to have two gifs across the whole post make each gif 268px, and so on and so forth. Tumblr does not allow more than three gifs to be put in a single row, and no more than 10 gifs in a single post.
You can change the gif size by pressing a keyboard shortcut CTRL + ALT + I. Then change it to whatever you want it to be. For this tutorial, I will change it to 540px.
Tumblr media
After that your gif is ready to be seen by Tumblr! Or is it? Most gif-makers create PSDs for their gifs, settings for coloring and lighting that can make a gif look prettier. You can find lots of PSDs online by searching google or tumblr and there are many different types. After this tutorial, I will be making a coloring and sharpening tutorial as well so keep an eye out for that!
SAVING
To save your gif you want to press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + S.
Tumblr media
At this final stage you want to make sure that the number that is circle is LESS than 3.00M. Tumblr does not accept gifs larger than 3 megabytes and the gif will upload fine but it will not play. And that’s how you make a gif!
I hope this helps people understand gif making better and please, if you have questions my ask box is always open!
gif tutorial
alright so i was asked for a tutorial on how i make my gifs, so here it is!! this one will focus mostly on how i make my live game gifs for baseball or hockey. as far as what i use, i use either obs studio or the xbox screenrecord function on my laptop for recording game clips. then i use photoshop, currently ps cc 2017, to actually make my gifs.
Tumblr media
how i made this gif from this gifset. this will be split into parts to make it easier if you only want to know about certain elements of the process!
screen recording:
i’m going to focus on obs studio, as it’s what i use more often, and as far as i know, anyone can download it, but i have no idea what’s up with the xbox software i use, lmao.
Tumblr media
this is what it looks like when i open it. currently, i use the display capture setting as my source, and i will show you how to add that, along with some other settings i use and shortcuts.
alright so at the bottom of the window, there’s the source panel, it looks like this:
Tumblr media
i already have a source added, the display capture. this means that it will record whatever i’m displaying on my screen currently, which is how i like it, as it makes it easy to know what i’m recording. i’ve never messed around with it much, to see what the other options do, because i’m lazy and this does what i need.
to add the source, click on the little plus icon at the bottom of the sources panel. a menu will pop up, and you can select any capture option, and as you can see above, i use display capture.
moving to the right, there’s the audio panel:
Tumblr media
my personal preference is to keep the desktop audio on, and turn the mic/aux audio off. this way if i need the clip later, especially if it’s a video of something especially cute or whatever, i’ll have it and be able to use it. if you have the mic/aux on, it will record whatever sounds you’re making on top of the desktop audio, leading to weird noises mixed in with the video audio.
and finally, moving to the right again, there’s the controls panel:
Tumblr media
this is pretty self explanatory, here is where you can start/stop a recording, access the settings, or exit the program. i don’t use these start/stop buttons, but that’s because of a shortcut i will show in a second.
this is pretty much everything i deal with on the main page. there’s a ton of other options/information/things, but i haven’t messed around with them too much, so i’m not sure what a lot of them do.
next i’ll show the setting i change/use. this is what the setting page looks like when you open it using the button on the control panel:
Tumblr media
now i ignore most of the tabs on the left, because i’m only using obs for screenrecording, and not for livestreaming. i do change things under ‘output’ and ‘hotkeys’.
output:
Tumblr media
here i’ve changed the recording path to go to a specific folder rather than the general one it will send it to. during the hockey season, when i’m possibly making gifs for 3 games at a time i change that folder to one for whatever the date is. during baseball season, i’m less likely to be doing as much so i put it in a general folder that i sort out later.
i don’t remember what the automatic settings are for recording format, but i believe i had to change it to mp4, which is what i need/use for my method of making gifs.
hotkeys:
Tumblr media
this is just a little short cut, but i added these hotkeys so i can start and stop recordings without needing to flip to the software, as long as it’s going in the background. i chose this key because it’s one i don’t need in my everyday life, thus minimizing the risk that i’ll ever accidentally record anything i don’t need, which isn’t a big deal, but can be annoying.
advanced:
Tumblr media
this isn’t really a setting change, but this is how i have my filenames formatted, at least until i manually change this if i want to, but i believe its the default and it’s honestly really helpful to keep the videos straight when you’re a disorganized mess like me.
i think that’s everything for the screenrecording part of the process. if you have any questions, just ask!
photoshop:
alright so i use the import frames to layers method to make gifs, it’s just how i learned initially, so i’m pretty stuck in my ways.
opening ps:
Tumblr media
this is what my screen looks like when i open photoshop. i have mine set to the lighter setting bc i like how it looks brighter, but its just a personal preference.
importing clips:
Tumblr media
select import and then video frames to layers. it will open your files.
selecting video:
Tumblr media
alright, so you can see the mess of videos i have, unsorted right now, lmao. anyway navigate to and select the video you want, and hit open.
selecting frames:
Tumblr media
this window will pop up after it loads, and here is where you select the frames you want to include in the gif. in order to do so, you slide the two sliders to frame either side of the clip. as far as the limit to every ___ frames, i try to not use it, or i use every 2 frames, just depending on the clip.
Tumblr media
now i have the clip i want, so i hit ok, and let ps do its thing.
process:
Tumblr media
alright so after the frames are loaded, there’s multiple things i do to prepare my gifs. i have to crop them, remove extra frames (delete with the little trash can at the bottom left), change the time delay, and then do the actual editing of the gif. also, i use the motion preset layout, which can be found on the drop down menu in the top right corner.
cropping:
Tumblr media
these are the dimensions i use for most of my gifs. i range between 250-300 depending on the video, but 540 is almost always there, due to tumblr’s dimensions for photos/gifs. 268 x 268 is what i use for square gifs.
the cropping button is found on the left side menu, and it looks like that little symbol on the far left of the picture above.
Tumblr media
once i have the area i want selected, i doubleclick and it crops the frames.
time delay:
Tumblr media
to change the time delay, click the little symbol you can kind of see in the photo above, with the four or so lines. it’s above the frames along the bottom of the screen, at the right. when the menu pops up, click select all frames, so you can change the timing for all the frames. once all the frames are selected, click one of the little carrots next to the numbers at the bottom of the frames, as seen in the picture below.
Tumblr media
now you choose the time delay you want. when im not skipping any frames, i  run between 0.05 to 0.06. if i am skipping, it’s between 0.08 to 0.1. just kind of play with it, til you find what works for you.
editing:
i always sharpen my gifs, it’s the best way to make your gifs look as nice as possible. to do so i use a sharpening action, found here. there is also a tutorial here for loading and using the action, which is much better than anything i could say, so use that!! i literally ALWAYS use this action/method, i love it so much. also, that blog is a goldmine for gif/edit help.
coloring:
alright, honestly im not going to be any help here, im so bad at coloring. at this point i have the same kind of things i do depending on where the game im makes gifs for is, since 81 and 41 games(ish) are in the same place for my teams during their seasons and then i just kind of make it up as i go. for actual help, i recommend the blog w the tutorial from above, just looking around there, or messing around in photoshop itself.
exporting:
Tumblr media
follow these steps to save for tumblr. once the window opens and is ready, change the width to 540 for the best results for tumblr.
Tumblr media
make sure the gif is under 3mb, otherwise tumblr won’t play it and it will look like a photo. then just post! and be happy!! send any questions my way, always happy to help :-)
How do I do that giffing?
Basic gif tutorial
Note: English is not my native language, but I shall do my best to explain it. Also, this is my first time making a tutorial like this, so I hope ya’ll can follow it a bit.
I am tagging some people that were interested into this from me: @goramidiot @lithiumkatana17 @kidsofthekelvinhero @prynacle @moonlight-at-dawn
Summary: Here I’ll explain and show, the way how I make a basic gifset. I will talk about the way I start and what you should keep in mind when making gifs and post them on Tumblr. Again this is just a very basic tutorial. But I will cover all the basics that I start with, always.
What do you need?
- Photoshop CS6 or higher
Video footage of the scenes you want to gif (I always try and use my own captured footage via my ps4, that way the quality is much better then for example downloading a youtube video. But some video’s do come in HD)
A idea of a scene you want to gif
Some basic knowledge of how photoshop works (the way layers and frames work and adding adjustment layers for some neat effects.)
Creativity
Patience
Some good music
Beer or coffee >:D
Step 1: Preparation
Before I start making my gifs I always and mostly already have a idea in mind of what I want to gif. I am a very organised person and I keep most of my vids in separate folders on a external hard drive. (and to be honest there are also some chaos folders on my desktop)
bear in mind you don’t have to be in possession of such things but I am merely showing you again how I do it :P
Here a example of a map structure I have of my current FFXV footage folder:
Tumblr media
After that I usually just drag the vids I want, to my desktop. So I can easily select them from Photoshop later on, which I will explain later.
I decided to make a small gifset of older Noctis (surprise, I love him) so I’ll have that ending footage at the ready.
Alright then, next is to open Photoshop. Always be sure to have the timeline tab open: Window -> Timeline.
Step 2: Importing the footage into Photoshop and convert it into frames and layers
Well then, once we got our idea and scene, it is time to import it into Photoshop. Luckily this isn’t to much of a hassle with the latest versions of Photoshop CS6 +.
To import footage, select: File -> Import -> video frames to layers.
Then choose the footage file, and you should see this window pop up now:
Tumblr media
You can select which part you want of the whole video with those two black bottom arrows, be sure to have checked ‘Selected range only’. If you don’t, Photoshop will import your entire video and then it becomes Photodrama.
Hit ‘ok’ once you got the part you wanted and Photoshop does the magic now for you. sometimes you will have frames that snooped through so you want to delete those.
Important note, also be sure to delete the very same layers. Frames and layers are obviously connected to each other.
Tumblr media
Congrats! We have imported our desired scene, and deleted the unwanted frames and layers.
This is my setup now at the moment.
Step 3: Choose your size
Next up is setting up the right size for our gif, our current one is waaaaay to big, tumblr sure is going to freak out when you post it like this (and Photoshop too) Now Tumblr comes with some standard sizes that you should be aware of (for the best quality). I will cover the sizes I myself use the most, the width is the most important, you can use whatever height you want:
Tumblr media
I am going to make this gif 540 px wide and 270 px in height. You do this with the crop tool:
Tumblr media
Now hit the accept button or that check button. Your gif is now turning into the right size. And once you did that also make sure to always have your view at 100%, that way you will see it sharp and clearly. There we re-sized it!
ps You can always hit the play button to see what your gif looks like so far.
Step 4: Adding adjustment layers aka MAKE IT PRETTY!
Now we arrived at the fun part, which is to make that gif stand out and make it come to life and get rid of this dull look.
You can make a huge difference already with the adjustment layer: ‘Levels’. Be sure to have the adjustment layers tab open, which you can see at my top right view (all these small pictograms.)
Select ‘levels’.
Tumblr media
Like this. The black arrow causes our gif to get dark, while the white one will turn it brighter. Go ahead and play around with the settings to see for yourself how it pans out.
Tumblr media
Adjust the levels in this panel not the lower one in the image above  ;)
You can add as much adjustment layers as you want. I decided that I want to add a black and white adjustment layer too.
Tumblr media
My result at the moment
Step 5: finishing up your gif
So, once you are satisfied by the way your gif looks, it is time to check out how big file it is. Tumblr will only play your gif when it is under 3 MB (and before it was under 2 MB… good lord)
Let’s check how big mine is atm: Go to file -> save for web:
Tumblr media
This screen pops up. It looks like my gif is too big: 3,01M to be exact.That means I will have to delete some frames, and then repeat this process until your are under 3 MB, preferably having something like: 2, 700 or 2,6 just to be safe. And do not save the gif just yet, this is just for checking.
Once you got your gif under 3 MB it is time to determine the pacing of your gif (how fast or slow you want it to play)
Tumblr media
Under each frame you would have noticed the 0,03 sec. That function determines how fast or slow it goes. Select all frame and hit the arrow. Choose ‘other’ and set it to 0,06. That is my standard pacing. Yo can select whatever you want of course, I recommend to play around a bit.
Step 6: Sharpen your gif
I always sharpen my gifs, they will look crispy and Tumblr has the tendency to reduce your quality a little bit. To start sharpening your gifs you must first make the timeline as one:
Tumblr media
The left button, next to forever.
Your frames will turn into a timeline. Now you will notice all those eye icons left of your layers. Those are the frames included into the timeline. You want to select all the layers with the eye icon. then go to: Filter -> convert to smart filters. All of your layers have been converted into one smart object. Now go to filter -> sharpen -> smart sharpen:
Tumblr media
I always use these settings.
Now click ok and save your gif for the web, again check if it is under 3MB as sharping does add up some space. IMPORTANT always select loop ‘forever’.
Congrats!! you made your first gif. Now you can post it on Tumblr and share your piece of art with the world:
Tumblr media
I hope this tutorial helps you on your way with your gifmaking skills. You have to begin somewhere, but be patient and always keep practicing! :D And I really hope you could kinda follow this... phew.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask me.
There are so many other people who have covered basic gif making tutorials. The best thing to do is to practice, practice, practice. Here is a blog page that covers tons of other tutorials, where I get my info from as well: http://chaoticresources.tumblr.com/tutorials
