Absolutely no offense to Sokka/Suki, but I think there should be AU content where Yue becomes the Moon but then she and Sokka just... keep dating. She uses her spirit powers to hang out with him somehow and, well, the one benefit of having given your life for your people is that at least you don't have to give up your love life for them now, right? Sokka adapts easily enough to having a spirit girlfriend, because it is frankly not the weirdest thing that's happened to him.
Potential futures, ranked from most to least angsty:
Sokka being the Moon's Husband until he dies, bringing the inevitable, tragic yet beautiful until-the-end-of-time parting that ends mortal/immortal relationships.
Avatar-world variant: Sokka dies but reincarnates, and the Moon shines more brightly on every one of his future selves, whether he knows why or not. (Sometimes he does.)
Sokka also ascends to spirithood at some point by virtue of Being The Moon's Husband, and basically becomes the Knowledge Owl Guy's nemesis because he A) is very involved in the mortal world and B) thinks that information should be free.
Variant: Sokka replaces the Ocean Spirit through some convoluted turn of events, making him and Yue the new yin-yang of Water.
Related, but different: Sokka just gets a nice house in a corner of the Spirit World where Yue stays between moonset and moonrise. If Iroh can, why not Sokka?
Anyway, this way you get the wholesomeness of these two finding happiness and love together even after everything; the comedy of Sokka actually DATING THE MOON and probably being very chill about the weirdness; and the incredible potential of an immortal spirit Sokka.

The Moon and the Sun (Zuko x Reader) part 6
Thank you so much for all of the positive feedback, I love you guys!! But anyway here is part 6 and just wanted to say that there is a small flashback in the story incase anyone was confused on that part. But hope you enjoy and I am working on part 7 so that should be up soon.
Part 1 Part 5
Masterlist
“The stars sure are beautiful tonight, too bad you can’t see them Toph.” Katara said in a tone loud enough for Toph to hear. You heard Toph grunt before Katara was launched into the air and onto Sokka.
“How’s a guy supposed to sleep with all this yelling and earth quaking?” Sokka asked as he sat up and threw Katara off of him.
“That thing is back.” Toph said as she reached out of her tent and you just let out a sigh as you stood up.
“Well, how far away is it?” Sokka asked as he grabbed the top of his sleeping back and pulled it over his head, laying back down. “Maybe we can close our eyes just for a few minutes.”
“I don’t think so Sokka.” Aang said as he looked over to see a line of smoke in the air.
“But I just want to sleep.” Sokka said with a groan and you just rolled your eyes at him as you bumped your foot against his side.
“We have to go.” You said, and he let out another loud groan before getting up. You all quickly put everything back on the saddle and before long you were all in the air again.
“Seriously what is that thing?” Katara asked as she rubbed her eyes.
“And how does it keep finding us?” Toph asked as the three of you were leaning against the back of the saddle looking at the trail of smoke in the air.
“I don’t know, but this time, I’m gonna make sure we lose them.” Aang said and Appa started to fly faster. You turned around and looked to see that Sokka was laying down and already asleep.
“Come on, you should try to get some sleep.” You said to Toph as you took her hand and helped guide her away from the back of the saddle and to an open spot by Sokka. Almost as soon as she laid her head down she was asleep and a smile came to your face as you turned to Katara. “You should try to get some sleep too.” “What about you?” She asked, and you just shook your head as you at her, exhaustion was all over her face and she looked like she was about to crash.
“I think we both know I don’t get much sleep.” You said as you sat down against the back of the saddle beside her.
“Nightmare?” She asked, and you nodded as you brought your knees to your chest, resting your chin on top. “Do you have them a lot?”
“Ever since I was a kid.” You said as you thought about all of the nights you had avoided sleep because you couldn’t handle having another nightmare.
“Do you want to talk about it?” She asked, and you could feel her eyes on you as you shook your head.
“We have more important things to worry about than my sleeping problems.” You said as you turned so that you could see behind Appa.
“Who do you think it is?” Katara asked as she glanced behind Appa.
“I don’t know but we have to figure out how they’re tracking us.” You said as the trail of smoke in the air was getting smaller and smaller as Appa got further away. Katara gave a small nod in agreement before she closed her eyes and laid her head back against the saddle. You did the same but instead of closing your eyes you looked up at the stars, it was something that you had done ever since you were a kid.
“Hey, it’s me again, I know you’re probably tired of hearing all of my questions about my parents, so I won’t ask about them, but I do want to ask if you could do something.” You said as you looked up at the moon. “You gave me my bending, so could you take it away? I know most people probably love being a bender, but I just wish I wasn’t. I just don’t want to be like you anymore, you’re able to be who you are and pull and push the water, but I can’t without being scared that someone is going to find out. So, is there any way that you could just take it away?” “Who are you talking to?” A voice asked from behind you and you knew it was Zuko before you even turned around. A smile came to your face as you looked away from the sky to see him standing a few feet behind you, a small piece of bread in his hands that you knew was for the turtleducks. “I was talking to the moon.” You said as you looked away from him and back up to the sky, a blush coming to your face as you realized how ridiculous you sounded.
“To the moon?” He asked as he sat down beside you and looked up at the moon, trying to figure out why you would be talking to the moon.
“Yeah, to the moon spirit.” You said, keeping your eyes on the sky.
“What were you asking it to take away?” He asked, and you could feel his eyes on you as he asked, but you kept your eyes on the sky, scared to look at him.
“My bending.” You said and even though you weren’t looking at him you knew that he would have a confused expression on his face. Zuko had always thought very highly of your bending, he had even told you that he liked water better than fire because it could heal instead of burn, so he couldn’t figure out why you would ever want it to be taken.
“Why would you want your bending to be taken away?” He asked, and you finally looked away from the sky to look over at him. It had been a few months since his mom left and this was the first time that you had seen him look almost okay, sure he looked tired but it was the middle of the night so that was normal.
“Because I don’t want it.” You said before you looked down at your hands. “You wouldn’t understand, you’re able to bend and it be okay but every time I bend I’m terrified that someone is going to see and we both know what would happen if your dad found out.” “When I’m Fire Lord, you can bend all you want and nothing will ever happen to you. I’ll keep you safe, I promise.” He said after a moment of silence, and the statement caused you to look over at him.
“Zuko you can’t promise that, the people would never accept me.” You said, and he just shook his head as he turned to fully face you.
“Yes, they will. I can tell them that you’re like the moon, and I’m like the sun.” He said, and you raised an eyebrow at him, letting him know that he needed to elaborate. “Uncle told me that the moon and the sun needed each other, they couldn’t exist without the other. I get my power from the Sun and you get yours from the Moon, so it’s kind of like we are the moon and the sun.”
“The moon and the sun.” You said as you looked back up at the sky. “But wouldn’t that make us complete opposites?”
“Yeah but Uncle says opposites are good.” He said, and you looked over at him to see he was looking at the water.
“One of my water scrolls says that opposites balance each other out, like Yin and Yang.” You said, and you watched as a small smile came to his face, the first smile that you had seen since his mom left. That was the first night of many that the two of you would spend sitting out by the pond, late at night when nightmares kept you from sleeping. And when you were banished you would spend your nights on the deck looking up at the stars and the moon, waiting for the sun to come up.
You were brought out of your thoughts as you felt Appa start to go down and you sat up to see that you were about to land, but as soon as you got there Appa just fell over, dumping you all on the ground and with how exhausted everyone was, you were the only one who seemed to be bothered by the sudden fall. You sat up and dusted yourself off as you looked to see everyone else just grabbing their sleeping bags.
“Okay, forget about setting up camp.” Sokka said as he crawled into his sleeping bag and started to crawl around. “I’m finding the softest pile of dirt and going to sleep.”
“That’s good because Toph wasn’t going to help anyway.” Katara said as she grabbed her sleeping bag and laid her head on it.
“Oh, I didn’t realize baby still needed someone to tuck her in bed.” Toph said as she laid on her back, eyes faced towards the sky. You tried your best to ignore the two of them as you unrolled your sleeping bag and laid on top of it.
“Come on guys, there’s something after us and we don’t even know what or who it is.” Aang said as he lifted his shirt to go over his head.
“It could be Zuko. We haven’t seen him since the North Pole.” Katara said and you knew that she was looking at you.
“Who’s Zuko?” Toph asked and you looked over at her confused for a moment before you remembered that she had just joined you guys.
“Y/Ns boyfriend.” Sokka said before anyone else could respond to her question.
“He isn’t my boyfriend.” You said as you sat up and leaned on your elbow to look over at Sokka, who rolled his eyes at you before looking at Toph.
“What I meant was, just some angry freak with a ponytail who’s tracked us all over the world.” Sokka said before he looked over at you, and even though he was tired you could see the sarcastic smile on his face as he said his next words. “And Y/N’s ex-boyfriend.”
“What’s wrong with ponytails, ponytail?” Katara asked in a sarcastic tone, trying to get the attention off of the boyfriend part and you sent her a small smile as Sokka laid his head against the ground.
“This is a warrior’s wolf tail.” Sokka said as he pointed to his ponytail.
“Well, it certainly tells the other warriors that you’re fun and perky.” She said, and you just rolled your eyes at Sokka before you laid back down.
“Anyway, whoever’s chasing us, they couldn’t have followed us here, so now would everyone just shush?” Sokka said and you heard his move around before laying back down, followed by Momo making a few noises. “No, Momo. Shh. Sleepy time.”
“Aang please get Momo so that Sokka will be quiet.” You said but you sat up once you heard Momo start to make more noise.
“Oh, don’t tell me.” Sokka said as he put his head on the ground and you looked over at Aang, who was looking at Momo standing by the edge of the mountain you were on.
“That’s impossible. There’s no way they would have tracked us.” Aang said and you let out a sigh before you stood up and looked over at Toph.
“I can feel it with my own two feet.” Toph said, confirming that whoever it was found you. Aang ran over to the edge as the rest of you followed him and when you reached the edge you seen the familiar cloud of smoke.
“Let’s get out of here.” Katara said, already turning to go back to Appa.
“Maybe we should face them and find out who they are.” Aang said and you looked over at him. “Who knows, maybe they’re friendly.”
“Always the optimist.” Sokka said with a sigh. “I doubt anyone who has been following us like they have is friendly.” You said as you looked away from Aang and over to where the machine was now stopping. You watched as one of the doors opened up and when the dirt settled, you seen three figures that you did not want to see.
“It’s those three girls from Omashu.” Katara said and you looked at everyone to see that they were all getting in a fighting stance.
“We can take them, three on four.” Toph said as she planted her feet more firmly on the ground.
“Actually Toph, there’s five of us.” Sokka said as he raised his boomerang and looked over at her.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t count you. You know, no bending and all.” She said, and you watched as Sokka’s face dropped.
“I can still fight!” He yelled at her and you put a hand on his shoulder as you gave him a small smile.
“Of course, you can.” You said to him before looking over at Toph, waiting on her to correct herself.
“Okay, three on four plus Sokka.” She said and Sokka let out a frustrated yell as his face started to turn red.
“It’s okay Sokka, I count you.” You said with a smile as you turned back around to face the three girls that were getting closer to you.
You knew that with the exhausted state everyone was in that this fight wasn’t going to go the way you wanted it too, and you were starting to question how good of an idea it was to stay here when you could try to get away.
“Well, we wanted to find out who they were, and we found out. Now let’s get out of here.” Sokka said as he put his boomerang back on his back and turned around, running back to Appa. You watched as Toph raised a wall once you were on the saddle and as you heard the sound of lightening your heart sunk. No one was in a good enough state to fight, let alone fight against lightening. And you knew that one hit of lightening would kill any of you, so you took a deep breath before you looked over at Sokka.
“I have an idea, and you aren’t going to like it but you’re going to have to trust me. If she hits Appa with lightening it’s all over, and you guys have to get out of here.” You said to him and he raised an eyebrow at you. “What do you mean you guys have to get out of here? We have to get out of here, you included.” He asked as he looked at you. You turned to see Toph raise a rock to block arrows from Toph before she jumped on the saddle.
“I have to figure out how she’s tracking us.” You said as you looked up at Aang.
“Appa, yip yip.” Aang said and as he was starting to fly you looked back to Sokka.
“You’ll have to trust me.” You said as you stood up and before they could stop you, you jumped off of the saddle. Sokka yelled as he tried to grab you, but it was too late, you were already off the saddle and on the ground as Appa took off. And before Aang could think about turning around, Azula sent a line of fire his way, causing Appa to fly faster. You looked up to see Sokka and Katara leaning over the back of the saddle looking at you as they got further away.
“I had hoped we would get the chance to speak to each other.” Azula said from behind you. You took a deep breath before slowly turning around to look at her, seeing her signature smirk on her face. “Me too.” You said as you glanced over at Mai and Ty Lee to see confused looks on their faces.
“I assume you stayed behind to fight us off and give your friends a head start?” Azula asked as she raised an eyebrow at you.
“That’s what I told them.” You said as you looked at her. “But I really just wanted a chance to talk to an old friend.” “Oh really?” She asked, and you nodded. You knew what you were about to do would forever ruin your chance of being friends with them again, even after the war ended, but if you wanted to keep Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph safe you would have to do it.
“Yes.” You said as you slowly got down on your knees as you bowed to her. “It would be an honor to be able to fight alongside you, to help you capture the Avatar and bring glory to the Fire Nation.” “Oh Y/N, you never were a very good liar.” Azula said and you slowly stood up as you looked at her. “You seriously didn’t think I would be that gullible, did you? You chose the Avatar over my brother, so why would you choose me over the both of them?”
“Because you were my best friend.” You said as you looked at her, and you knew by the look on her face that she didn’t believe you.
“If you can betray poor Zuzu, I think you could betray me. But I would love having you with me while I capture the Avatar, I like the idea of having the two things my brother wanted.” She said, letting out a sigh before she sent a small line of fire out, catching your pouch of water on fire. You quickly took it off and let it fall to the ground before you looked at Azula. “Well, now that we know you won’t be bending, let’s go.”

Hey! I absolutely loved your Zuko x reader one host you wrote, and I was wondering if you could do one where Zuko and the reader barely talk, but she’s part of Azula’s friend group. At the beach some stuff happens, and Zuko finds out she’s not as crazy as he thought she was. Kind of angst. I totally understand if you can’t, or don’t feel like it! I hope you’re safe and healthy, and everything is going well. Thank you!

Author’s Note: Ok this request is P E R F E C T. I don’t think I need to tell anyone I love the psychology of this show, but I love the psychology of this show - especially with Zuko and his relationship with himself and others. And this episode??? Ohhhhhh I have some THINGS. TO. SAY. about this episode. I have been in this boy’s place and I feel 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 him 👏🏻 he 👏🏻 deserves 👏🏻 better 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I went in a sliiiiiiightly different direction, but I didn’t drastically change it (it turned out cute I think). Also, I named this “From Eden” because as I was writing it reminded me of the Hozier song. I’m such a sucker for a Broken Babe™, especially when the babe in question has a lot of personal growth and learns to love because of it. Thank you so much for this, anon, you’re absolutely gorgeous and I hope you’re keeping safe and healthy as well ❤

“Hey.”
Zuko sat on the porch of his family’s old vacation home, his mind miles away. Your greeting made him snap his head towards you, glowering down at where you stood at the base of the front steps. You crossed your arms, responding to his gaze with a defiant glare.
“What do you want?” he growled.
“To have normal friends,” you spat in reply. “Seems I’m stuck with you instead.”
A few hours ago, Zuko almost made a crater in the beach from the campfire you, his sister Azula, and your friends Mai and Ty Lee had started a screaming match around. Insults were flung, tears were shed, and skeletons were evicted from closets, all resulting in your realization that maybe political survival wasn’t worth the dysfunction of constantly being surrounded by a sociopath and her cronies. Pretending to have a super fun sleepover with them back at the guest house was proving to be too much for your fragile sense of self-containment, and you weren’t quite friendly enough with your newfound death wish to tell Azula how you really felt about her, so you went where you knew it would be quiet. You didn’t expect to find Zuko and his anger issues there a second time, but he honestly didn’t scare you - you’d take his obvious rage over Azula’s subtle calculations any day.
“I don’t know why you’re complaining,” Zuko jeered. “You’re just as emotionally fucked as the rest of them.”
“Ty Lee’s got herself pretty much under control, despite her gullibility,” you answered cooly. “Also, if you really wanna talk about emotionally fucked, I’m not the one who almost roasted my ex-girlfriend alive earlier.”
Zuko furrowed his brow at you, leaning forward as if to challenge you. You stayed exactly as you were, regarding him with a hard, unimpressed expression that revealed just how little he intimidated you. You couldn’t bend and weren’t a trained fighter - you knew he knew this, and that he wouldn’t actually attack you, despite how convincing he tried to make his empty threat appear. After a long, intense moment of wrinkled foreheads and competitive frowning, he backed off with a sigh, leaning back against the pillar behind him.
“So, what, you want to come and make peace? Talk it out or something?”
You shook your head, climbing the steps and lowering yourself onto the second highest; just below him, with a few feet between you as a courtesy.
“The last thing I want to do is talk about that dumpster fire on the beach,” you told him. “I just needed some time alone. But, since I found you, I guess it’s a good time to ask if you’re okay.”
Zuko looked you up and down, a confused and partially concerned look on his face. You half expected him to raise the back of his hand to your forehead to check for fever.
“What do you care if I’m okay or not?” he asked bitterly. “We’re not friends.”
“Zuko, I’ve known you since I was a toddler,” you said. “I’d say we’re friends. It’s not like anyone else really is.”
“Mai is my girlfriend,” Zuko snapped at you. “She’s the best friend I have!”
“Mai dumped you for being a possessive asshole,” you deadpanned, “then she let her best friend convince you to commit arson. Friends don’t let their friends’ sisters manipulate them into felonies.”
Zuko huffed, slumping back defeatedly.
“You can’t act like Azula’s never made you do anything you didn’t want to,” he grumbled.
“I don’t,” you replied shortly. “I’ve just stopped caring about making her like me, since she really doesn’t like anyone. She doesn't get under my skin like she used to when we were kids.”
You noticed Zuko’s lips curl upwards into the ghost of a smile. You mirrored him, leaning your arms atop your upright knees.
“What?” you asked.
Zuko chuckled faintly, shaking his head.
“Nothing,” he responded. “You just… Do you remember when you were eight, and Azula teased Ty Lee about being too slow climbing the trees in our courtyard?”
Your eyes widened in realization, your mouth parting into a wide smile as you let out a gasp of hysterical laughter.
“Oh, that was awful!” you cried, though the memory only brought more fits of giggles to your gut. “I was such a little brat!”
Zuko was laughing with you too now, arms wrapped over his stomach as he tried to speak between breaths.
“It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen!” he exclaimed. “Watching her fall out of the tree like that, the shock on her face, and then I caught you with the knife and saw where you cut the branch... She deserved it. You should give her a taste of her own medicine like that more often.”
You blushed, looking away from him as your laughter died down.
“Now she could kill me if she wanted,” you said. “I try not to say or do anything around her if I can help it.”
“... Is that why you’ve been so quiet since then?”
You nodded.
“She beat me up when she found out what I did,” you explained.
You stood, pulling down the waist of your sarong to reveal the burn scar on your right hip. Zuko’s eyes burst with shock at first, wondering exactly why you’d be disrobing in front of him, his expression softening when he saw the mark Azula left.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “Most brothers feel like they should protect their little sisters. I always felt like I should’ve protected all of you from her.”
“You did,” you assured him. You sat back down beside him, closer this time, so that your hips almost touched. “I remember you jumped in front of her once when she threatened us. And that time…”
Your voice faded, the memory almost bringing tears to your eyes. You couldn’t figure out why.
“You hid from her,” Zuko finished your thought.
You nodded.
“You let me hide in your room,” you recalled. “Remember? Azula punched me. I ran to the first quiet place I could find and accidentally went to your room.”
Zuko hummed.
“You were crying,” he added, “and your eye was all red and swollen.”
“You held me.”
Zuko’s eyes fixed on you. He didn’t say anything, though he remembered; you burst through his half open door, sniffling, tears and spittle running down your cheeks and chin. It was the first time Azula had actually, physically hurt you, and you were terrified and confused. He asked if you were okay, and you shook your head. Being so young, the only thing he could think to do was hug you, since that’s what his mother did to make him feel better, and you clung to him, sobbing into his shirt and using his much bigger body for protection. After that day, he let you use his bedroom as a hiding place whenever Azula got to be too much - until she found out about it and started teasing you about wedding dresses and baby names.
“We were friends,” you breathed. “I wish we still were.”
There was a long silence in which the two of you stared out at the horizon, down the steep hill leading to the vacation house and into the ocean. The moon hung in a small sliver, barely flickering across the calm waters that rocked below; you could hear the gentle rush of waves as they crawled over the sand and shrunk back into themselves, creating a calming din that echoed up to where you sat.
“... I still remember your favorite game to play with me,” Zuko said into the warm air between you. “Those times you hid in my room. You used to pretend to be a Kyoshi warrior. My mom gave you one of her old fans and we’d jump on and off my bed, trying to catch each other.”
You grinned.
“I would wrap myself around your legs to keep you from walking,” you recalled.
Zuko laughed.
“I loved that,” he admitted. “It used to make me laugh so hard when we were kids.”
He looked over to you, and you turned to face him as well. The anger in his eyes was gone completely, in its place a warm, steady sadness that made you ache.
“I miss you,” he whispered.
You reached cautiously for his hand, relieved when he slid his fingers between yours and gripped your palm tightly.
“I miss you, too,” you replied. “I’m sorry I let Azula drive me away from you.”
Zuko wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tender embrace. Your hands latched together on either side of his back, gripping into his shirt a little bit as you buried your face in his shoulder. He felt and smelled the same as he did when you were little; hard like the walls of a sturdy house and sweet like the last embers in a fireplace.
You didn’t know how long you held each other, but when you broke apart, you sat together for ages, existing in silence on the steps of his childhood house and beside one another. You felt small again, but in the best way - you felt like the girl who was brave enough to cut through the branches of a maple tree so your tormenter would fall out of them.
“I want to run away,” you blurted. “I could be someone totally different if I weren’t stuck here.”
“If you do, I’ll go with you,” Zuko said. “We can be different people together.”
You grinned, leaning your shoulder against his.
“We could move to Kyoshi Island,” you suggested. “I’m too old to start warrior training now, but we could start a business. Open an inn or something.”
Zuko chuckled at the thought.
“I’ll call myself Lee,” he mused, “and you can go by Izumi.”
“Maybe we could be married. And we could adopt orphan children and cats.”
“Just cats. You can’t emotionally destroy a cat like you can with a kid.”
You glanced over at him, noticing the hard gleam in his eye. You wrapped your arms around his bicep, holding him close to you.
“You’re not your father, Zuko,” you whispered. “You don’t want to be.”
Zuko nodded. He reached for one of your hands, curling his own around it.
“... I feel like I am going to leave,” he said, “at some point. When I do… will you stay? So that I have at least one friendly face to come home to someday?”
You nodded, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
“I will,” you promised. “And when you do, I’ll give you Azula’s severed head as a homecoming present.”
Zuko laughed at that.

When Calum was little, his two favourite things to watch were Grease and Happy days; so it came as no surprise to anyone when he wanted to be a mechanic.  Calum also may have cited a time or two that The Fonz and Danny Zuko are who opened his eyes to the fact that he was attracted to men.
The slicked back, leather jacket look was something Calum was into; and while he was well aware that no proper mechanic actually dressed like that, it didn’t stop him from wearing such a getup to his interview at Irwin’s Auto- his curly hair perfectly messy, white t-shirt fitted against his torso with his worn-in leather jacket over it.
Calum had hoped the man who did his pre-interview over the phone would be the one interviewing him, because based on voices alone Calum thought he sounded extremely attractive, and he was only rewarded when a young man who looked roughly his age came walking through the door.
The man wasn’t dressed like he would have expected, which only served to make him even more attractive.  He was dressed in a torn-up black Led Zeppelin t-shirt, dark ripped jeans that hugged his thighs, and his black hair pushed off of his forehead - Calum had to give his head a small shake to get himself out of the headspace of checking out his potential boss.
“Don’t mind my outfit, I didn’t get much sleep and this is the first thing I found.  I’m Ashton, I own this shop,” Ashton spoke, reaching out his hand for Calum to shake.
Standing to shake the man - Ashton’s - hand, Calum couldn’t help but to admire the blood moon tattoos on his forearms, “Not to worry, happens to all of us.  M’Calum, I’m… interviewing to work here.”
Oh, so he was in the business of telling people things they already knew now, that’s good.  The grin Calum received in response made him grin as well.
“My ex is an ass.  I went to go get the last of my stuff and he wanted to start another fight… I don’t honestly know why I blurted that out, I’m sorry.  That was unprof--”
“He?” Calum blurted out before he had the chance to rethink it.  Maybe he did have a chance after all, if he didn’t get the job maybe he could follow up another time and ask him on a date.
Ashton’s frown made Calum’s breath seize in his throat though, immediately rethinking his choices, “Mate if you have an issue with gay people, you can get the fuck out.”
“No!” Calum sputtered, burying his face in his hands, “I was just surprised because I’m gay too.  Well… Half gay, bisexual really.  Fuck m’sorry, that was a horrible way to say that.  I’m bi.  I don’t have an issue with gay people.”
The grin returned to Ashton’s lips in an instant, leaning back into the chair opposite from him and crossing one leg over the other, “I think we’re going to get along just great.”
Calum was hired by the end of the interview, despite only being an apprentice at one other shop for three months before it went belly-up.  He liked to think that maybe the fact that him and Ashton seemed to get along great had something to do with it, or maybe he just saw potential in Calum.
His first day hadn’t gone as well as he expected; he knocked over a tray of tools, and somehow managed to drop numerous items onto Ashton’s foot.
“You’re so lucky you’re pretty,” Ashton muttered under his breath, and it made Calum pause for a minute - had he just said he was pretty? No one had referred to him as pretty before.
It was all Calum could think of the rest of the day, doing his best to avoid dropping more things onto Ashton in hopes of not getting fired. After his first day of stumbling about, the rest of the week seemed to go smoothly; that was until he slipped on a small patch of oil on the ground, landing on his ass. Thankfully, it wasn’t a painful fall, but it was enough to have Ashton rushing to his aid, barking out a laugh when he realize Calum was okay.
“You’ve had a tough start and end to the week, wanna go for drinks after work?” Ashton asked, patting Calum on the forehead.
Calum agreed a little too quickly, a blush creeping up on his cheeks when Ashton held his hand out to help him up.  They had brushed past each other before, but Calum had forgotten how warm Ashton’s hands were, and how nice the man’s calloused fingers felt against his own. Realizing he was holding on for a little too long, he quickly pulled his hand away to run his fingers through his hair, messing up his curls a little more and tugging on the ends in his embarrassment.
Ashton’s eyes lingered for longer than he’d care to admit on Calum’s fingers in his hair, silently wishing they were his own. The more he got to know Calum, the more attracted he was to him; he struggled of course, because he was supposed to be his boss, and it would be completely out of line. Ashton had thought more than once about how Calum’s lips would feel against his own, or how many more tattoos the man had.
“You okay?” Calum asked, “I was the one who slipped, mate. You look like you’re going to be ill.”
Ashton shook his head, laughing softly, “Just thinkin’ bout the damages you woulda cost me if you cracked that thick skull of yours on the concrete.”
With that, the two returned to work- Calum placing the tires back onto a car, Ashton trying not to watch the way his muscles moved underneath his jumpsuit. And Ashton replacing someone’s rear brakes, Calum definitely not watching the way his stomach muscles would tense on a particularly hard tug. The day seemed to pass slowly, the anticipation creeping up making Calum sweat for more reasons than just the heat.
“Ready to go?” Ashton grinned, wiping the sweat off his brow with the rag that had been hanging out of his pocket.
“Uh, yeah. Just gotta get outta my grease monkey clothes, y’know,” Calum chuckled before he turned to head for the bathroom to get changed.
By the time he had cleaned up the sweat from his face, and changed into mostly decent clothes, Ashton was already ready, leaning against his car waiting for him.  As if Calum couldn’t be any more attracted to the man, seeing him sitting against the hood of a black 1969 Ford Mustang made him practically salivate at the sight.
Ashton simply grinned when he saw him, pulling the sunglasses onto his face and pushing himself off the car, “Ever been in a car like this? S’a beaut.”
Calum hummed, shaking his head, “I’ve only ever seen cars like this, oldest car I think I’ve been in was a 1995 impala ss, I think?”
Ashton nodded, allowing the engine to roar to life, “Well then you’re in for a treat, mate.  Maybe we’ll go for a drive and I’ll let you take the wheel.  You’ve driven stick before, yeah?”
“I’ve handled a few sticks in my time,” Calum smirked, watching a look of realization cross over Ashton’s features that his meaning may not be entirely innocent, sporting a matching smirk all the way to their destination.
Walking into the bar, Calum relaxed at the familiar warmth of the bar enveloping him; the smells invading his nostrils, and the music had him humming along quietly as he followed Ashton to a table in the back corner.
Once they settled in and had their drinks, conversation flowed easily between the two men.  Talking about where one another grew up, favourite hobbies, foods, and the like.  It wasn’t until the subject of relationships came up that Calum grew more quiet and withdrawn, which Ashton took notice of as he spoke of his ex boyfriend.
“What about you, any horrible first date or relationship stories to share?”
Calum shrugged, taking a long sip of his beer before he spoke, “I’ve only had one boyfriend, and it wasn’t the best experience.  He wasn’t out to his family yet, so he had to keep me hidden.  I didn’t so much mind that he wasn’t ready to come out, of course, what I minded was that his shame lead me to being treated pretty shitty by him.  Needless to say that relationship didn’t last very long, and I’ve been single ever since.”
Ashton listened intently, leaning his elbows onto the table so he could listen to Calum better, “I’m so sorry you experienced that.  It’s like you said it would be fine if he wasn’t prepared to come out, but the way he treated you is inexcusable.”
Calum nodded, draining the rest of his beer and setting the glass down, “It’s fine, m’doing better now.  Trying to go on some dates, but each one has been pretty shitty.”
“Hm, well the goal I’d say is to be a little less shitty every time no?”
Chuckling, Calum nodded, “Yeah, well, I don’t know if you can tell but I have no idea what I’m doing.  I almost never do.”
Ashton quirked a brow, smiling around the rim of his glass before draining his as well, “My big toe would have to agree,” he paused, looking towards the window to see if it was dark.  Seemingly pleased that the sun was beginning to set, he looked back to Calum, “Wanna go for that drive? I got the tab while you were in the bathroom.”
Calum frowned, agreeing to heading out, but not before promising Ashton that he’d pick up the tab the next time.
When they walked out to the car, Ashton spun to face him, walking backwards while he spoke, “I was gonna let you drive, but there was somewhere I wanted to show you first.”
The question didn’t leave Calum’s lips of if he was about to get murdered, simply letting Ashton drive.  Classic rock played in the background softly, Calum enjoying the feeling of the wind through his hair as he realized Ashton was driving towards the beaches.
“Why would you want to go to the beach at night?”
“Not technically night yet, Cal, we’re going to watch the sunset on the beach.  Well not on, but on the hood of my car!” Ashton smiled brightly over at Calum when he pulled into the parking lot.  Ashton seemed like he was driving to the furthest spot away from the entrance, and all the other cars, and it made Calum pause for a moment - maybe he really was being murdered.  “Stop looking so worried, I just like to play music and I don’t wanna disturb people around us.”
Once he had parked, Ashton encouraged Calum to get out so they could sit on the hood, leaning back against the windshield to watch the sunset.  Calum thought of how crazy that within a week his life had drastically changed; he got his dream career, made a new friend, and started to feel more like himself than he ever had.
“You okay?” Ashton asked, tilting his head in Calum’s direction, “What’s goin’ on in that head of yours?”
“Just thinkin’...” He trailed off, feeling Ashton bump his shoulder so he would continue.  “My life has improved so much just in the last week, and I have you to thank for that.  I went from this dorky dude who was stuck in the past, still hurt over his ex, to a passably cool mechanic who’s only looking forward to the future.”
Ashton smiled, shifting to move closer to Calum, their thighs touching, “Good.  I meant what I said before, the way he treated you was inexcusable.  You’re such a smart, funny, and talented man, it’s part of the reason I hired you, and you didn’t deserve to be treated like that.”
Calum’s breath caught in his throat when he turned his head to find Ashton inches away from his face.  Swallowing thickly, his eyes searched the man’s hazel ones, watching as they cast down to his lips, “What was the other part that you hired me for?”
The man licked his lips, slowly dragging his eyes back up to meet Calum’s, “Say the word and I won’t.  But I hired you because I didn’t want anyone else to have you.”
His words were true, that ever since he met Calum he knew he had to have him; on his staff, and just in his life in general.  Ashtons’ words were all it took for Calum to close the gap, his soft lips meeting Ashtons’ own.  Calum’s fingers tangled in the white shirt the man was wearing, pulling him closer.
Their kiss was heated, needy, and it didn’t take long to realize where these kisses were going to lead.  Ashton’s lips trailed along Calum’s jaw, his fingers gently coming to rest on Calum’s crotch and toying with the zipper.
“Ash, we’re in public--” “And?” “And? What if someone sees us and calls the cops?” Calum nervously glanced over his head to see if anyone was looking at them, only to be relieved that a majority of the pairings had dissipated, few cars left in the parking lot.
“Fuck ‘em, want you,” Ashton hummed, pressing kisses along Calum’s neck.  “Do you want this? Because we can stop.”
Calum knew it shouldn’t be sexy, but Ashton reassuring that it was okay seemed to only turn him on more, nodding feverishly, “Yes.  I want you, please.”
Ashton didn’t need to be told twice, his fingers working at the button of his jeans, sliding the zipper down soon after.  Reconnecting their lips, Calum moaned as Ashton palmed his clothed cock.  The friction of Ashton’s hand combined with the fabric of his boxers could have been enough for Calum, not having been touched in such a way in a while, but he wanted to hold off as long as he could to see what Ashton had in mind.
Leaving hot, open-mouthed kisses along his chest, Calum gasped when Ashton finally reached the waistband of his boxers, tugging them down with ease.  He could see the man lick his lips once more, which made him let out a quiet moan.
Ashton leaned forward and began to tease the head with his tongue, hand wrapping around Calum’s length to keep it in place. A few more teasing licks, and Ashton dipped his head, taking as much of Calum in his mouth that he could all at once.  Gasping at the feeling, Calum’s eyes quickly darted around to see if anyone was watching before he tangled his fingers in Ashton’s hair.  The older man expertly bobbed his head, hollowing out his cheeks and flattening his tongue against the underside of Calum’s cock.
“Fuck.  Your mouth feels so good,” Calum whined, biting his lip to keep from being too loud, though he so wanted to.
Ashton picked up his speed, using his hand to make up the rest that he couldn’t take into his mouth.  Calum nearly came then and there when the tip hit the back of Ashton’s throat, causing him to gag slightly.  Though he wanted to, Calum knew he wouldn’t be able to hold on much longer, especially with the way Ashton was moving his tongue against him.
“Ash, m’gonna cum,” Calum whispered, just loud enough for Ashton to hear.  The final push for Calum was when Ashton took him into his mouth again, allowing the tip to hit the back of his throat despite the gagging it caused him, the sensation sending Calum over the edge.  With a whimper of Ashton’s name, and a final tug on the older man’s hair as he came, Ashton working him through it.
Once Calum had come down, he pulled Ashton in for a kiss, smirking against his lips, “Definitely wasn’t the way I was expecting my first week to go.”
Ashton chuckled, helping Calum get redressed, “Well, welcome to the team Fonzi.”
“Fonzi?” “Dunno, when you came in you kinda reminded me of Fonzi from Happy Days,” Ashton said with a small giggle, pressing his lips to Calum’s once again.
“Please, you’re more like Fonzi.  I’m like… the b-list Fonzi, a Bonzi if you will.”
“Bonzi and Fonzi? I could get used to that.”

Marriage AU Part 2
Here is the second in a series of vignettes centered around an arranged Zutara marriage.
Zuko was pleasantly surprised to find that Katara was able to keep up with him with little problem. She got onto the rooftop without his help. Once they reached the top, Katara took off the balaclava Zuko had given her. She must have felt Zuko’s consternation because she put her hands on her hips.
“No one can see us,” she said defensively. “And it’s stuffy in there!” Behind his mask, Zuko raised an eyebrow. But after a moment, he conceded she was right on both counts. He reached up and undid his own mask.
“Your mask is so much cooler than mine,” Katara sighed, taking the mask from Zuko. She held it up to her face and growled. Zuko let out a snort of laughter as he took down his hood.
“It was the best I could do on such short notice,” he told her with an apologetic shrug. “I’ll get you a different one for next time.” Katara lowered the mask and regarded Zuko archly.
“So, there’s going to be a next time?”  she asked. Zuko folded his arms, his eyes narrowed pointedly.
“I don’t know. Is there?” Katara’s cheeks flushed and she mumbled something as she handed Zuko back his mask,  ignoring his knowing smirk. She went to the edge of the roof, careful to stay in the shadows. She watched the activity in the street below with a longing sigh.
“I’m sorry we can’t go down.” Zuko stood in the space beside her, and Katara thought she recognized the same craving for the press and flow of the crowd in his eyes. It surprised her. She hadn’t taken him for a people person.
“This is nice, though,”  she said, suddenly needing to reassure him. Then she laughed nervously. “You know, it...it kind of feels like a date.”  Zuko turned to her sharply, eyes widened in shock.
“Wha…?”  Katara felt her cheeks bloom in what she was sure as a spectacular blush.
“I - I mean,  I’m not saying it actually is one,” she stammered. “It just...I don’t know… kind of feels like one.” Zuko was blushing now, too.
“I guess it does,” he admitted. They couldn’t meet each other’s eyes now, and Katara mentally kicked herself for making things awkward when they were getting along for once.
“I wouldn’t know anyway,” Katara continued, unable to catch a hold of her tongue. “I’ve never been on a date.” That caught Zuko off guard.
“Never?” he repeated incredulously. Katara pressed her lips together and shook her head.
“I didn’t really have the chance when we were...travelling. And after the- the betrothal,  there just didn’t seem to be much of a point, you know?” Zuko wasn’t expecting the tide of sympathy  that rose in him. Suddenly he understood what Katara had sacrificed in the name of peace. She had gone from war orphan, to child warrior, to political bride. Had she ever experienced any of the normal things a young woman was supposed to? Zuko felt unworthy  of everything she’d given up.  He wished that he could go back to the peace talks and assure the Water Tribes that he was done with his family’s war, and they were safe from the Fire Nation, marriage treaty or no.
“We...we could  call this a date,” he offered shyly. Surprise was evident in Katara’s wide eyes. Zuko lowered his gaze and mumbled, “ If you want to.” Katara looked back down at the street and fiddled with the edge of her shirt. Just as Zuko was contemplating finding an earthbender and asking them to bury him, Katara cleared her throat.
“It...it wouldn’t be a bad thing,” she said. “We are married, after all. We should at least try to...to be friends?” Zuko glanced up to find Katara watching him with wide, hopeful eyes. They  looked impossibly blue in the light of the crescent moon. Zuko’s mouth went dry, and his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. He swallowed hard and nodded. Katara smiled at Zuko then, wide and bright. She had never smiled at him like that. He had barely seen her smile at all since she arrived. Zuko felt overwhelmed.  To his relief, she looked away a moment later, and he could breathe again.
“So,” she chuckled, “my first date ever is with the man I’m already married to.”
“It’s kind of lame. I’m sorry.”  Iroh, Zuko thought, would be disappointed. He should have given Katara flowers, and they should have gone to a nice restaurant in nice clothes. Instead, he had her scrambling up on the roof of an abandoned, and probably condemned building in a mask.
“I’m having a good time.” Katara sounded as surprised as Zuko felt. “Besides, it’s not like I have anything to compare it to.”
“I- I’m having a good time, too,” Zuko admitted. Katara smiled at him again, and his heart sped up in the strangest way.
“What about you?” Katara asked.
“Huh?”  Zuko replied intelligently. Katara chuckled.
“Is this your first date?” she clarified.
“Oh!” Zuko blushed slightly. “Well...no.  I- I had a girlfriend before…”
“Oh!” Katara took a step backwards. “I didn’t know that. Wait...you didn’t  break up because of me, did you?’  Zuko’s mouth opened and closed a few times as he tried to form a coherent answer. His hesitation spoke volumes, though. Katara took another step back, and Zuko panicked. He could see the warmth that had been building between him and his new wife was crumbling.
“It’s… complicated,” Zuko told Katara. “But I chose this with my eyes open. It’s not your fault we broke up.”  There was a suspicious shine in Katara’s eyes. She blinked hard, and it was gone. Zuko reached out hesitantly, taking Katara’s hand. “We both gave up a lot for this. For what it’s worth…” Zuko trailed off, uncertain of how to finish. Katara smiled weakly and turned her hand to hold his.
“Yeah,” she murmured, agreeing to neither of them really knew what.
“Besides, I think Mai and I-”
“Mai?” Katara snatched her hand back, sputtering. “Mai is your ex? No one told me I was having lunch with your ex!”  Zuko hit his face with his palm. Now he knew why his uncle always said not to discuss past relationships on the first date.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to spring that on you.”
“Why wouldn’t you tell me that sooner?”Katara buried her face in her hands and groaned. Her face was once again blazing in her humiliation. No wonder Mai had seemed so cold towards her, and Ty Lee so awkward. And Azula so...eager to have them all share a meal together.
“I didn’t think it would matter,” Zuko said. “And we weren’t really talking before.  I just...I’m really, really sorry.” Katara laughed mirthlessly.
“She must hate me,” she muttered. “You both must.”
“I...I don’t hate you,” Zuko took Katara’s wrists and gently pulled her hands from her face. Katara didn’t fight him, but she was clearly distraught. Her bright smile was long gone.
“Did you...do you love her?” she asked. Zuko felt a prick of guilt. His last conversation with Mai before his betrothal was announced flashed in  his mind. He remembered the hurt in her eyes when he told her what he had decided.
“It’s...it’s complicated,” he said again. “It’s also the past. You’re my wife. We’re partners now.”
“But you loved her,” Katara gestured towards the palace where Mai was sleeping in Azula’s apartments. “And I came along and-”
“And gave up everything to make sure the world has a chance for lasting peace,” Zuko cut in earnestly. “And I made a vow to you. Maybe this isn’t the marriage either of us planned on having, but what you’ve done is incredibly brave.”
“Well, you did it, too, “ Katara pointed out.
“You gave up your home,” Zuko said. “Your family. Your first date. I haven’t done much of anything by comparison.”
“Zuko-” Katara looked down at his hands still closed around her wrists.
“I’m going to do everything I can to be worthy of that,” Zuko promised. “You’re the most important woman in my life now. The only woman in my life.”
“But you were in love,” Katara’s eyes were so full of compassion. It fell on Zuko like a weight, and he had to turn away.
“I told you,” he murmured. “It’s complicated.” Katara’s brows knitted together in confusion. Zuko sighed.  “It’s for me to deal with, okay? It’s not your fault.”
“I-” Katara started.
“It’s not your fault,” Zuko pressed. “Say it.”
“I-it’s not my fault,” Katara repeated.
“Good.” The corner of Zuko’s mouth lifted in a half smile. Katara returned it hesitantly. Then she freed her hands from Zuko’s and wrapped her arms around herself.
“Do you mind  if we go home?” Katara asked after a moment.
“Huh?” They had only been gone about an hour and a half. Katara looked up at Zuko apologetically.
“It’s getting chilly,”  she explained. “I didn’t think to bring a sweater.”
“Oh…” Zuko couldn’t hide his disappointment.
“I’ll remember next time,” she promised.
“Of course,” Zuko said quickly. “Next time.”
They made their way back to the palace without being spotted. Zuko led Katara to a trellis near their rooms, and Katara was certain he had done this before.
“Should we be worried that security is this lax?” she questioned as Zuko helped her onto the balcony.
“I’ll talk to Uncle about it tomorrow,” Zuko promised. He looked over the balcony railing and frowned. Katara was right. With the assassination threats against them both, it should not have been quite so easy for them to sneak onto the palace grounds.
Katara opened the door into their sitting room. Zuko followed close behind and lit the sconces on the walls. Katara handed him back the mask he had loaned her.
“I had fun,” she told him. Then she hesitated a second before she stood on tip toe and gave Zuko a peck on the cheek. Zuko stared after her, too stunned to move, as she practically fled the sitting room, and shut the door to her bedroom behind her.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6
Authors note: I just had to include that smirk, since technically this chapter happens after they get back from Boiling Rock lol
Zuko and Sokka returned a few days later, riding in on a Fire Nation blimp instead of Zuko’s war balloon. It turns out they snuck into a Fire Nation prison because Sokka wanted to find his father. They returned with Hakoda, a Kyoshi Warrior named Suki and another prisoner who just so happened to hear about their plan.
We were all sitting around a fire that night as everyone caught up, the air light. I got up from my spot next to Toph and walked over to where Zuko was sitting alone. He smiled at me as I sat down next to him and I gave him a playful swat on his arm.
“Ow! What was that for?” He asked chuckling, rubbing the spot I just hit.
“What was that for?! I asked if Sokka was okay, you told me he was, and then you guys just disappear for days after leaving a weird note behind. Which, by the way, was not believable.” He shrugged with a small smile on his face.
“I knew Sokka was going to try and do something reckless, I had to go with him. No one deserves to fight alone.” I smiled at him before looking away, feeling the blush creep on my face, hoping he wouldn’t see.
“I’m glad Sokka has you.” I motioned to Suki, who was sitting cozily next to Sokka. If it weren’t so dark, I’m sure we’d all see Sokka’s pink cheeks as he fawned over her. “Of course, Sokka would run into an old flame, even in a Fire Nation prison.” I shook my head with amusement and saw a shift in Zuko’s demeanor. “Did you run into anyone?” I asked, not sure what made him tense up. All I got was a shrug.
“Azula was there, that blimp was hers actually. She brought… her friends with her to fight. I haven’t seen my sister since the day of Black Sun.” He said, his hesitation when mentioning his sisters’ helpers obvious. Unsure what to make of it, I reached out and gave his upper arm a reassuring squeeze.
“It must have been hard to see your sister, I’m glad everyone made it out okay.” He smiled at me after sighing, relief clear on his face.
“I’m just happy to be back here, with you.” I looked down at my lap, blushing at his words. If this wasn’t a clear sign that Katara was right, and Zuko has feelings for me too, then I’d never understand boys. I knew I had to tell him how I feel, just to get it off my chest. I decided to wait until he got some rest; I’m sure sneaking into a Fire Nation prison is exhausting.
Sokka insisted we relax for a few days, to balance out the few days they were in the prison, saying how it was the “only way” to get “back into fighting shape”. I knew he just wanted to catch up with Suki after not seeing her for months, and I get it. It didn’t stop me from feeling annoyed though, knowing Sozin’s comet was getting closer.
“When are we going to get back to training and, oh I don’t know, planning what we’re going to do when Aang has to face the Firelord?” I finally decided to ask one day, annoyance clear in my voice. Sokka and Suki were sitting up against the fountain in the courtyard as the others milled around, all content with doing their own thing for a bit. Sokka turned away from Suki, giving me the strangest version of what I think was supposed to be a sympathetic look.
“Draya, relax. With Suki and-“
“Yes, we know that your girlfriend is an incredible warrior, and I would love to learn from her, which is why I’m wondering when we’re going to start training and planning again. Your dad is here Sokka, we could have half of our plan thought through already!” I didn’t realize how animated I became while I spoke, having to catch my breath when I was done.
“Maybe she’s right, Sokka. We should be doing something more… productive.” Suki said, offering me a soft smile. I returned it along with a soft nod, thankful she agrees.
“No Suki, it’s okay. I know what this is really about.” Sokka said, turning his attention to me. At this point, the others were quiet and listening to our conversation. I could see Katara glancing between her brother and I, waiting to put out any fire (real or metaphorical). Zuko walked closer to us, having missed the beginning part of the conversation but obviously noticing my aggravation, confusion clear on his face. A mischievous smile crept on my face as I crossed my arms over my chest, ready to hear what Sokka said next.
“Oh really? You mean it’s not about me wanting to do something more productive then sit around and flirt all day?” I asked, directing all my attention to Sokka, hoping Suki would know I wasn’t intending to insult her. He stood up and walked over to me, amusement dripping in his laughter.
“Oh Draya. Draya, Draya, Draya. This is clearly because you’re jealous. You’re jealous that you and your firebending prince boyfriend can’t sit around ‘flirting’ all day because you think he still might have feelings for his Fire Nation ex.” As soon as the words escaped his mouth, my smug expression dropped, being replaced by confusion. I saw Sokka recoil as he realized what he said, after Suki smacked his leg. I looked back at Zuko, hoping I didn’t look as hurt as I felt. His eyes, for once, weren’t already looking back at me; instead, they searched the floor beneath him. I felt my face contort into anger, turning to face Sokka again.
“For the last time Sokka, he is not my boyfriend.” A burst of flames escaped my palms as I spoke, emphasizing my anger. “Even if he was, at least he didn’t turn into the moon.” Sokka’s expression quickly became pained, making me regret the words as soon as I said them. It was a low blow, and I knew it. I turned around and, before marching away, I said “I knew I should have left when I had the chance.” I held my head up while I grabbed my bag, shoving my sleeping bag messily inside, and started to run off without a plan.
I had found an empty staircase in the temple after running for what felt like forever, and it seemed to crawl up the side of the mountain. I looked up the never-ending steps and sighed. I sat down on the bottom step, finally allowing my shoulders to drop and the tears to spill out of my eyes. It was almost infuriating how miserable Sokka’s words made me feel; I mean it’s not like there was anything to be jealous about. Zuko and I, we’d only ever just be friends and I knew that.
The thing was, in all the conversations we’ve had since the day in the alcove, Zuko never mentioned having an ex-girlfriend. Not once. He told me about his family; his mother, the way his father and sister treated him, how wonderful of a man his uncle is. But never a mention of an ex-girlfriend, or even an ex-flame. I rolled my eyes with a laugh as I wiped at my tears with the back of my hand. It had to have been one of Azula’s friends, his weird pause from our previous conversation finally making sense. He probably grew up with her, having long history together that I could never compete with. I was so lost in my spiral of thoughts that I didn’t hear Zuko walk up until he cleared his throat. I looked up at him, mustering the best neutral expression I could with tears streaking my cheeks.
“Draya, I-“, Zuko started as he stepped closer, the cold daggers in my gaze making him stop in his tracks. “I’m sorry. I should have been the one to tell you about my ex-girlfriend.” His words made me laugh, dripping with more cynicism than amusement.
“There’s nothing you have to tell me Zuko. We’re just friends, you don’t owe me an explanation.” My wave of sadness has been consumed by anger, not knowing who exactly I was angry at. Zuko? Sokka? Myself? I turned my body away from him, and I could hear his quick movements getting closer. He gave out a huff as he sat on the steps near me, staying quiet for a long time. I was about to stand up and leave when he decided to speak.
“Her name is Mai, she’s friends with Azula. Her and another one of their friends, Ty Lee, used to hang out at the palace a lot when we were young. I really thought I liked her, and I do. I’ll always care about Mai as a friend.” He kept his tone even, voice soft, as he spoke. I hesitated before turning my body to face him, his head hanging while his fluffy black hair covered his face. He was gripping his hands so hard; his knuckles were starting to turn white. I could tell how nervous he was to open up, I knew I had to say something.
“Zuko, thank you for telling me about her. You really don’t have to explain yourself, though. My anger back there was… dramatic. And mainly directed towards Sokka’s big mouth.” My gaze never left his face as I spoke, hoping he would look up at me. His grip loosened and he shifted his body, so he was completely facing me before looking up. I felt my heart jump to my throat at the sight of his gentle eyes, giving him a soft smile. He held my gaze, the sincerity clear on his face. He sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“After Azula tricked me into thinking my father had changed his mind, Mai and I reconnected. We soon became close and it felt comfortable having someone I was so familiar with around, someone that didn’t hate me. Before I left, I knew I had to break things off with her. Everyone thought I was a traitor; I couldn’t drag her into it. While in the prison, I was caught and given my own cell as an actual prisoner. Her uncle is the warden, so she found me. She was upset that I only left a letter-”
“A letter Zuko? Really? You cannot make this a habit.” I say, trying not to laugh. He smiled slightly.
“I know, I know. Anyway, I told her I was sorry, and how great it was to have her around when I returned to the Fire Nation. She was probably the best friend I had there, really. She told me I was betraying my country; she didn’t understand that when I broke up with her it was so that I could leave to help save the Fire Nation, not to hurt her. I knew she would never be able to understand, and I told her that things would never work between her and I.” His free hand hovered up to my face, his palm getting close enough that I could feel the heat coming from it before he dropped it to grab my hand instead. We just stared at each other for a few beats, savoring every bit of this moment. The sun was hitting his golden eyes, the color dancing the same way a breathing flame does. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Mai.”
“Zuko. Really. It’s okay. I’m not mad at you. I’m… not even mad at Sokka. I should be the one apologizing to him right now. It’s just… when you disappeared with Sokka, I was so worried that I’d never see you again and it broke my heart knowing that I never told you how I feel out of fear… fear that I’d lose the one person who’s helped me realize what actually belonging feels like. I care about you Zuko, in a way that I’ve never cared about anyone else, and that scares me. Everyone I’ve ever known is gone, anyone I cared about…” I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, preparing myself for what I was going to tell him next. Zuko noticed how nervous I was, squeezing my hand.
“Take your time Draya, it’s okay.” His soft smile gave me the courage to go on. I gave a soft nod, shifting my gaze from Zuko to a small, stray tree swaying on the cliffside.
“I didn’t just lose my mother the day my village was raided. She married a farmer when I was a baby, and not soon after… I had a younger brother; his name was Kin. He was only 2 years younger than me. Growing up, all I’d hear is how much my mother loved the fact that Kin was ‘just like her’, that she finally had a ‘good’ child, a child who didn’t bend fire. It made me resent him, even when he proved that he was nothing like our mother. Kin was kind, sweet, and so funny.” I laughed, surprised when I felt tears I hadn’t known were there fall from my eyes. I wiped at them with the back of my hand, shaking my head. “The morning of the raid, we had gotten into a stupid argument. I told him that I wished he were never born. I hurt him so much that he ran out of the house, and I didn’t go looking for him. That was the last thing I said to him before… I was hoping I’d see him with the other children, praying to the spirits that he was kidnapped too. Maybe then I could protect him, make up for all the times I wasn’t there for him before. Tell him that it wasn’t true, I was so happy he was my little brother.” I looked down at my hand that was still being held by Zuko, not bothering to wipe at the tears that were now steadily falling. He dropped my hand to wrap his arms around me, using one hand to cradle the back of my head. I wrapped my arms around his torso and laid my head on his chest.
“Draya, I am so sorry you’ve been carrying that with you. You don’t have to say it out loud; I feel it in the way you speak, how you act. I haven’t known you nearly as long as your brother did, and if I can see how clearly you care for others, I know he felt it. You can’t hold on to that forever Draya, it’ll eat you alive.”  Both of his arms were wrapped tightly around me, his head now resting on top of mine.
“I was awful to him Zuko. I knew the years of pain I endured was karma for how I treated him. All he wanted was for his big sister to play with him, to plant in the garden with him, to love him. And I always refused. I should have been there for him. I should have looked for him. Not even for my baby brother could I stand up to my mom, if only to her words already in my head.” I buried my face into the front of his robe, hating the fact that I was opening up so much. I couldn’t stop.
“What you went through was cruel, and nobody’s fault but my fathers, not karma. You’re one of the most brave, resilient, and caring people I know. Your past doesn’t define you, or your future.” His tone was kind, sincere.
“It sounds like someone has been listening to their uncle’s advice.” I mumbled into his chest, refusing to move from our embrace. I felt a light rumble in his chest as he chuckled, leaning back to look at me. He grabbed my face with both of his hands, palms resting on my cheeks and thumbs gently wiping away my tears. “Thank you for always listening, Zuko. I’m happy I met you.” I smiled, placing my right hand on top of his, leaning my face into his warm palm.
“I will always be here for you. I care about you, Draya.” He smiled, dropping his hands and wrapping one around my shoulders. We sat there for a while before Zuko stood up. “Ready to go back with the others?” He asked, and I sighed as he held out a hand. I took it, standing up next to him and grabbing my bag that was still sitting on the stairs. We walked silently back to the courtyard where the others were now sitting in front of a fire. As soon as he saw me, Sokka stood up and ran over to me, throwing his arms around my body. I stumbled back a bit from the impact, but that didn’t seem to faze him as he hugged me tight.
“Draya! Thank the spirits Zuko found you. I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. I’ll stop calling him your boyfriend, just please don’t leave! We can’t afford to lose anyone else.” He leaned away; his face covered in a sad apology. I just smiled at him.
“It’s okay, Sokka. I’m the one who should be saying sorry, I shouldn’t have said… what I said. You know I respect her, and you. I’m sorry.” He shrugged in response before smiling and wrapping an arm around me, leading us back to the others. We enjoyed the rest of the night around the fire, Sokka promising we’d get back to serious business tomorrow. I absorbed the feeling of being surrounded by my friends and smiled. I knew that no matter how much we planned, we’d probably never be ready for the future. I shake the thought away, not wanting the thought of Sozin’s comet to ruin an already salvaged night once again.

Mutilated Mannequin (Part 3)
Azula feels as though she has signed away her soul. She supposes in some more flowery and figurative manner of speaking, that she has. At the very least, she has signed away a portion of her body.
She directs her thoughts elsewhere and begins working out a speech for the class elections; a list of promises and choice words. Perhaps she'd pass out some sort of food since monetary bribes are prohibited by the school.
Her plans thus far included a push for  a better reward system for those on the honor roll and for better funding for the non-athletic extra curriculars. She taps her pen against her lips as she thinks it over. The first formal lunchroom debate is to occur in three days time and she best have some dialogue prepared. Granted, she finds it hard to come up with anything when the student council hasn’t even told her of the questions to be asked and topics to be discussed.
TyLee drops into the seat next to her. “How’d your...uh...thing go?”
Azula shrugged. “It was an event and it...occurred.” She wishes that she could say that it isn’t still occurring. “How did your tryouts go?”
“Fantastic!” TyLee claps her hands together. “You know, varsity is only for upperclassmen, like juniors and seniors…”
“I know what an upperclassmen is, TyLee.”
“Well, coach Rangi says that she might put me on varsity anyways.” She is beaming from ear to ear and Azula tries to muster up some enthusiasm, but she hasn’t been able to shake her own dread since the night prior.
It keeps re-emerging in her mind, the image of her altered face. If she can’t even get used to the mental image of it, how the hell is she supposed to cope with seeing it in a mirror?
“Are you still planning on attending the astronomy club?” TyLee asks. “I think Yue said that she was going, she really likes the moon or something.” The girl gives a shrug.
“Yes, I’m going.” Azula confirms. Between running for student presidency, maintaining her spot on the honor roll list, and astronomy, she is going to have her hands full. Perhaps it is a good thing, it doesn’t leave much room for dwelling on her nerves. If she is lucky, she might be able to keep herself busy enough to avoid a second appointment. But she knows that she will only be delaying the inevitable.
She knows that her father will cancel her plans to drag her to the clinic. She just hopes that these appointments won’t conflict with the astronomy club.
“Are you going to join Yue and I? Mai can’t because she has to watch Tom-Tom on Tuesdays.”
TyLee bites her cheek. “I can probably come later in the year, but Coach Rangi says that most of our competitions are going to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, sometimes Saturdays for the big ones.”
Azula nod, she has an overwhelming desire to guilt her into dropping gymnastics. Instead she lightly bites down on her pen.
“Are you mad?”
Azula shakes her head.
She isn’t mad.
She is scared.
Scared and somehow she feels alone.
.oOo.
She finds herself in the lunchroom again, bracing herself for another conversation that she couldn't get invested in.
"Hey, can I copy your history homework?" Chan asks. "Kyoshi is going ham with these assignments."
"I suppose that it looks that way to someone who hadn’t turned his assignments in, in over a week." Azula shrugs.
"So that's a no?" Chan asks.
"Chan, I threw out that worksheet a week ago." She pushes another away, and I already turned this packet in."
"Well shit..." he mutters.
"I heard you're thinking of joining the astronomy club, Toph." Azula hears Suki say as the pair breezed by.
"That's right!" Toph replies boldly. "I'm going to be Agni High's first blind stargazer! Principal Pathik is going to be so proud."
"You just want to discuss extra terrestrial conspiracy theories." Katara mumbles.
“God, they are such dorks.” Yue comments.
Azula shrugs but she isn’t going to disagree. Though she does wonder exactly what warranted the comment this time. She tests the waters, “if you think astronomy is for dorks then why are you going to the club?”
“First of all, it’s cool when we do it. Second of all, I promised Katty that I’d be better than her at everything.”
“Pretty sure that I made Zuzu the same promise.” Azula flicks her bangs. She fills in one last answer on her worksheet and puts it away.
“Done already?” Jet asks.
“Did you expect anything less?” Mai asks. “How long have you been sitting with us now?”
“Much longer than any of us can tolerate.” Azula mutters, drawing a cheerful laugh from TyLee.
“And here I was going to share my cookie with you.” He shuffles around in his paper bag and fishes out an absurdly large chocolate chip cookie.
Azula holds her hand out. “I suppose that we can tolerate your presence a bit longer.”
He chuckles and breaks the cookie in half.
“What about the rest of us?” Yue asks.
“Yeah, you jackass!” Chan adds.
Azula exhales, it is refreshing to be talking about things unrelated to relationships and homecoming dances, and other matters that remind of her of what’s to come. She tries to immerse herself in the conversation. Tries to remind herself to just think about the first astronomy club meeting.
.oOo.
“I bet that you can’t even work a child friendly telescope.” Yue drums her fingers on the table.
“I’ve been stargazing longer than you have.” Katara counters.
Azula finds herself a seat, next to Yue. She gives the room a once over. Other than Yue and Katara, she knows no one. She finds herself somewhat disappointed that Toph had only been jesting about joining the club. She supposes that she doesn’t mind some time to herself. The stars are supposed to be serene anyways. Serene and quiet and a steady constant when she needs some sort of stability.
“You’re just mad because my daddy bought me the last StareScape model 10.” Yue declares.
“Just because you have an overpriced telescope, doesn’t mean that you have the brains to use it.”
Azula rolls her eyes, she has an itch to inform Yue that it is a StarScope model 9, but she doesn’t fancy agreeing with the brother of her competition. She would rather observe the squabble than part-take. She isn’t quite in the mood for petty games these days, if she ever had been at all.
The more she ponders it, the more she begins to consider that, perhaps, she is only with the in crowd because her family has money. That’s the only reason Zuko isn’t harassed. It’s the only reason that the girls flock to him, or so he claims.
“Tell her, Azula!” Yue pulls her back into the present.”
Azula rolls her eyes. “Tell her what.”
“That she’s not allowed to be here. No nerds in the astronomy club.”
“I’m fairly certain that the astronomy club was founded by a gaggle of nerds.”
“Whose side are you on?” Yue asks.
“Whichever side has more brain cells at the time.” She shrugs. Sure the girl’s brother is competition, but at least the girl doesn’t make Azula feel like her IQ points are dwindling with every passing second spent in her company. Resentfully, she recalls that her IQ points are really the only advantages she has. “Besides, this is your age old rivalry. Not mine.”
“Thank you!” Katara throws her hands up.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. You’re brother is a nuisance and I have a feeling that it runs in the family.” She folds her arms over her chest. She has to remind them every now and again, has to remind herself of why she has a higher place on the social ladder. She has to maintain it somehow. And since she can’t flash a gorgeous smile or flaunt an enticing body, she’d just have to settle for asserting her dominance and pick friends carefully. Not that she really particularly trusts anyone in these halls save for Mai and TyLee.
Katara scowls but folds her arms with a ‘humph’.
If the banter were to continue it would have been cut short anyhow. Mr. Zhao appears in the room with a stack of books and star charts. She hopes to God that he is less humdrum and sour after school hours. “Where is Pathik?” Asks a boy from the other side of the room. “Usually principal Pathik runs the club.”
“Pathik is busy with final back to school matters.” Zhao replied. “I will be filling in for him for the time being.”
“Hoo-ray.” Yue slouches in her chair, puffs out her cheeks, and blows at a strand of her hair. Azula can’t help but think that, somehow, that expression is still more attractive than whatever she has going on with her own face at any given moment. She grips her pencil more firmly.
“I have a rather special announcement. Exciting news.” Zhao drawls.
His monotonous demeanor certainly drove his words home.
“This year, we are offering a chance to visit the NIR&Ex...”
“Isn’t that a designer brand?” Yue asks.
“It’s the National Interstellar Research and Exploration Institute, you dolt.” Katara hisses.
“As well as a chance to earn a scholarship to Laogai Lake University. Many astronomers have graduated from there like…” Zhao peers down at his paper. “Wan, Sozin, and Agni High’s own Yangchen.”
“Isn’t Sozin, like, your uncle or something? The one who always talks like a poetry book.”
“He’s my great-grandfather, Yue. You’re thinking of Iroh.”
“I’m trying to hear this!” Katara shushes through gritted teeth. “Maybe your daddies can bribe you in, but I actually need this.”
Yue rolls her eyes. “Listen to that. I hear that she gets wears secondhand socks from her brother. That’s why they call him Sokka, because he keeps giving her his socks.”
“They call him Sokka because that’s. His Name.”
Azula pinches the bridge of her nose, she doesn’t know just how long she can tolerate this for. She came here for solace and at least a fraction of a moment of peace.
“Sure it is…” Yue replies.
Azula groans softly before getting up and going to sit next to the boy on the other side of the room.

My mother’s reactions to ATLA
1. The Boy in the Iceberg: Why is Ponytail Boy so mean and sexist? Also, I like the uncle already, because he likes roasted duck.
4. The Warriors of Kyoshi: I can’t believe Sokka likes getting his butt kicked. And that Suki likes Sokka. I mean, I didn’t expect some badass warrior girl to have a crush on *Sokka* of all people.
5. The King of Omashu: Isn’t he like 100? How is he so buff? Also, I can’t believe he almost killed Aang.
6. Imprisoned: Haru is so good-looking! Are all Earthbender boys this good-looking or is it just him?
9. The Waterbending Scroll: Why is Katara suddenly such a bitch? I get you’re jealous of Aang, but come on, he’s the *Avatar.* He’s going to be naturally skilled, obviously.
10. Jet: Okay, I’m really confused. Haru is way more handsome than this Freedom Fighter dude. Why is Katara falling for him? She should get back with Haru.
12. The Storm: …Zuko’s father is the biggest dickhead ever. No wonder Zuko is emo and mean all the time. And that girl who was smiling at him: is she his sister or something? She seems like a misguided bitch child.
13. The Blue Spirit: (Zuko as the Blue Spirit appears on screen for the first time) It’s Zuko. I don’t know how I know, but I know.
14. The Fortuneteller: Aang has a crush on Katara? Sorry, Aang, but you’re like 12. Also, how did Katara sparkle when she put the necklace on?
15. Bato of the Water Tribe: Aang! Why! Did! You! Hide! The! Map! I’m starting to lose hope in Aang. Also, that goth chick is *way* too young for Iroh.
16. The Deserter: Aang was dumb, again. How am I not surprised? At least he made Zhao burn down his own ships.
18. The Waterbending Master: (about Pakku at the end of the episode) What a sour old man. I still don’t like him.
19 & 20. The Siege of the North (Part 1 & 2): Yue is *so* dramatic. I still like her, though. Too bad she died and became the moon, I guess. Also, I can’t believe the entire ocean drowned Admiral Monkey Dude.
21. The Avatar State: I was right! That girl was his sister. And she is so mean. That line about the tides was funny, though.
22. The Cave of Two Lovers: Aang, you’re never gonna get a girlfriend if you keep misspeaking like that.
23. Return to Omashu: I don’t like Mai. She’s too sour and typical; a classic edgy teenage girl. Ty Lee is also kind of weird, but at least she’s nice… I guess.
26. The Blind Bandit: (talking to me) I can see why Toph is your favorite character, honey, but Sokka is still my favorite.
27. Zuko Alone: Well, that was depressing.
28. The Chase: Zuko is not really good at communication, is he?
29. Bitter Work: Katara, stop telling Toph what to do. Let her do her job.
30. The Library: Appa is gone? What? For how long? When is he coming back? Also, the sandbender guys were so ugly and creepy.
32. The Serpent’s Pass: “Sorry, samurai girl, I can’t kiss you right now, my ex is watching me.” And now begins the transition of Aang being an edgy teenager.
33. The Drill: I’m surprised Azula didn’t zap Mai right away when the battle was over.
34. City of Walls and Secrets: I did not expect Ba Sing Se to be like that… at all. Also, the Chinese characters for Ba Sing Se aren’t even accurate. I’m confused.
35-B. The Tale of Iroh: (crying) He sure… loves singing a lot.
35-C. The Tale of Aang: (animal jumps at Aang through its cage) Oh no! I got so scared that I dropped my meat bun onto my lap.
36. Appa’s Lost Days: (crying on the bed)
37. Lake Laogai: I don’t like Jet, but I feel bad that he died. He made mistakes but he had a rough childhood. Also, Long Feng is the worst. He’s a coward.
38. The Earth King: Finally, that guy got arrested. Sokka’s jokes are still funny.
40. The Crossroads of Destiny: Zuko! What the fuck! I hate this scumbag. I feel so bad for Iroh. He spent so much time mentoring Zuko and he just betrays him. And, Aang, if you opened all your chuck-ras (she’s used to Aang’s pronunciation) or whatever they’re called, you wouldn’t have almost died and you could smack Azula into the wall.
41. The Awakening: Ew. It’s Zuko. I hate him. I wonder how he’ll get redeemed. + Aang, stop being an idiot! I know you’re 12, but still! (P.S. Katara and Hakoda’s talk made her cry)
44. Sokka’s Master: Yes! Sokka! I love him! Did you write that down, honey?
45. The Beach: Even after this episode, I don’t hate Zuko any less. Also, Azula, it’s just volleyball. Chill out a bit.
46. The Avatar and the Firelord: So Sozin and Roku’s friendship is foreshadowing Aang and Zuko’s future friendship… how is Zuko even gonna get in the group?
47. The Runaway: Katara… you kind of are a mother. A bitter one. But everyone likes you, including Sokka, so it’s okay.
48. The Puppetmaster: Why is it that every time Katara meets another waterbender that they’re evil or something? I mean, I didn’t even expect Hama to be malicious, especially to that extent. Bloodbending is creepy.
50 & 51. The Day of Black Sun (Part 1 & 2): I guess I’m gonna have to like Zuko soon, since he’s gonna join Aang, Katara, and the others.
52. The Western Air Temple: Zuko is actually really good at impressions. Especially the Azula one. I completely agree with Katara about Zuko, though.
54 & 55. The Boiling Rock (Part 1 & 2): I can’t believe Sokka broke his father and girlfriend out of prison. And that Mai quit being *as* bitter.
56. The Southern Raiders: Katara, oh my goodness. Don’t use bloodbending. Sigh. (She later cried when Katara forgave Zuko)
57. The Ember Island Players: Aang, it’s a play. I know you’re still a kid, but come on.
Sozin’s Comet: The Final Battle (Part 1 & 2) - I cannot understand a thing that turtle guy was saying. I think he gave Aang special powers, though. I’m not surprised Iroh instantly forgave Zuko, but he definitely doesn’t deserve it yet. Whatever, though, he’s Zuko.
Sozin’s Comet: The Final Battle (Part 3 & 4) - Finally! Azula got put in her place! I kind of pity her, but she’s still mean when she’s crazy, right? (She later cried when Aang and Zuko hugged and when the show ended, for like, a really long time; maybe 10 minutes)
Verdict - I give it a 10/10. The show was really fun to watch and the characters and plot were very interesting. I guess I like Zuko now, even if he’s still an idiot sometimes. Sokka is still my favorite.
