I’m Coming Home (Breath of Life Sequel)
Tumblr media
Summary: There’s nothing like coming home to those who love you the most
Pairings: Bob x Female Reader (possibly a few OCs as well)
Phoenix woke up to the bright sunlight shining in through the window in the small house she shared with Cole, her phone vibrating twice before the screen lit  up with a notification. As soon as she saw it, she couldn’t help but smile. Today’s the day......she thought.
She looked at the calendar hanging from the door of the fridge in the kitchen, a small, yellow post-it note with Cole’s messy handwriting scrawled across it, before her eyes trailed to the date circled in red sharpie.......July 23rd.....she had to call Bob.
As soon as she had her coffee in her lucky mug, Phoenix dialed in on FaceTime, greeted by the sight of (y/n)’s face. “Today’s the day honey!!!” she said excitedly.
“I know right?!” (y/n) exclaimed excitedly. “Bob wouldn’t stop talking about it last night.”
“Where is he?”
“He’s right here, hang on one sec.”
(Y/n) turned the phone around for Phoenix who was soon met with the sight of Bob’s shirtless self, holding August. She couldn’t help but melt at the sight of her nephew nesting against Bob’s chest under the Indian blanket, still small, but perfect in everybody else’s eyes nonetheless.
“Mornin Daddy,” she chuckled.
Bob smiled a little, his eyes blinking open as he fixed his lopsided glasses hanging half off his face. “Oh God what time is it?” he yawned.
“It’s seven-fifteen,” Phoenix informed him. “Whose coming to get you guys?”
“Hangman and Fanboy,” Bob replied sleepily. “They wanna see Auggie before he’s discharged.”
“We’re all gonna see him when you guys get home so what’s the point?”
“I dunno but they insisted,” Bob slurred before he was suddenly awoken by a tiny coo from August. “I hate when he does that sometimes.”
“Oh c’mon it’s cute,” Phoenix told him.
“It’s cute until he scares me.”
“Alright,” Phoenix said. “I won’t keep you guys. I’m gonna finish my coffee and head down.”
“What about Cole?” (y/n) asked.
Natasha bit her lip, trying to conceal the urge to tell them where Cole had really gone to. “He ran out to go grab some extra supplies,” she told them. “He’ll be back when you guys get home.”
“Alright, we’ll see you when we see you.”
As soon as they had bidden their goodbyes, Phoenix laughed a little bit before sending her husband an impromptu text message. Bob and (y/n) were definitely gonna love the surprise when they got home.
 **************
Bob was beaming with pride as he stroked the dark gold tufts of hair on your son’s delicate little head. It didn’t matter that August was still small and could practically fit in Payback and Coyote’s hands perfectly. He would grow.
Another squeaky little coo came from August as his tiny fingers curled against the bare skin of Bob’s chest. He didn’t want to let him go or put him down anywhere, not after the scare that the two of you had received two weeks prior. Though the memory was still fresh with you both, Bob still  was proud. August, tiny little August, had fought like a wild animal against the odds and won.
“Hey little man,” Bob whispered. “You awake?”
August moved his head just a little, his eyes shutting as he went right to sleep again. Bob felt his heart jump as a wave of joy washed right over him, his finger stroking Auggie’s delicate little cheek.
“Smile guys.”
Bob looked up at you as you snapped a few pics on your phone, unable to control the smile that formed on his face. “You gonna keep doing that all day (y/n)? Or are we gonna get ready when for when the numbskulls arrive?”
“Hey I’m trying to capture the moment here.”
Bob laughed, trying as hard as he could not to wake August when the nurse poked her head in through the door and announced that you two had visitors. The last two weeks it had been nonstop, first Penny and Maverick had come by with Amelia and the boys and Rooster the very next day. Coyote had stayed with the two of you the day that August had been taken in for surgery to repair the weak part of his heard, never once leaving except to grab food or let the dog out.
“Hey, hey, hey!” Hangman announced proudly as he and Fanboy entered. “How’s our little bird doin?”
“Couldn’t be better,” you answered.
“Hey I brought you guys something,” Fanboy said, unzipping his backpack and pulling out a small blue bear that was the perfect size for August.
“Oh my God, Mickey,” you half gasped in surprise. “You didn’t have to do that!”
“Hey consider it a gift from both Abuela and I,” Fanboy said. “She saw it yesterday and she’s like ‘I gotta get it ‘.”
Never than in that moment were you so grateful for your family and extended family. Fanboy’s grandmother had always been one of the first to step forward and help, even when she didn’t have to. You gave him the biggest hug you had ever given, forever grateful for the support.
“Holy shit,” Hangman remarked. “He got a little bit bigger.”
“Oh really? You can tell?”
“You kidding?” Hangman remarked. “Last time I held Baby Bird, he almost fit perfectly in the palm of my hand.”
Bob rolled his eyes. He hadn’t seen much of it, but he just kept telling himself that in no time at all Auggie would grow.
The four of you talked a while longer before the nurse came in to look over August one more time. Finally, she handed you the discharge papers with everything he would need, including the tiny little heart monitor he would need to wear for the next month and a half. You didn’t care in the least. Besides, it would be barely noticeable under Auggie’s clothes. All you and Bob cared about was that he would be going home.
You were practically screaming inside from excitement as Bob carefully placed August in his carseat. “Jeez little dude,” Fanboy chuckled as he snapped a picture on his phone. “You look like you’re gonna get all swallowed up in there.”
Finally he was ready, almost fast asleep and gripping his bear for dear life in with his arms. When you left, the four of you were proudly striding down the hall, ready to go home and see the rest of the family, hoping with all your might that they would be waiting. Hangman said a quick goodbye to his wife, Gretchen, on the way out, the doors opening into the bright July sunlight outside the Navy hospital. A plane roared overhead before zooming off in another direction, disappearing as it rounded the corner near the parking garage.
“See that buddy?” Hangman said to Auggie. “Your uncle Jakey’s gonna teach you how to fly someday.”
You and Bob looked at each other with a look that practically screamed “God help us all”. They knew exactly what would happen the minute Jake took him up in the plane when he was big enough.
At last they found Hangman’s truck, the black Silverado that was plastered with decals that showed Navy pride and a few that were lewd, crude and funny all at once. “You wanna give him to me and I’ll put him in?” Hangman asked.
“Just know that if you wake him, you’re putting him back to sleep,” Bob retorted.
“I make no such promises,” Hangman joked.
You and Bob were pleasantly surprised at how well Hangman was able to fit the carseat into the center of the back, leaving plenty of room for you and Bob to sit on either side of your son. Fanboy jumped into the front passenger seat, leaving Hangman as the designated driver.
“Let’s get this baby on the road!!!!” Hangman announced.
As soon as everyone was ready, Jake started up the truck, pulling out of the garage and out onto the road, the air conditioning blasting away to keep everyone cool. The drive was almost perfect as the truck sped down the open road past the beach and the airfield, the best forty five minutes in a car the two of you had in a long time. Only once did Hangman have to stick his middle finger out the window and scream at a pair of girls texting on their phones.
“GET OFF YOUR PHONES HOEBAGS!!!!” he bellowed, sticking his middle finger out the window.
“Jake! Little ears are present,” you chuckled, trying to chide him while everybody laughed.
“C’mon,” Jake said. “He’s gotta learn it from somewhere.”
You continued along until you saw the house pull into view.....the house where your greatest memories had begun. The garden was in full bloom, the sea close by roaring as the waves crashed onto the shores while several other vehicles had been parked in the drive and along the sidewalk. God, everybody had turned out to welcome August home.
“Ok children, everybody get the fuck off my bus,” Hangman said, doing his best Mr. Garrison impression.
None of you could help but laugh. Carefully, you and Bob unloaded Auggie’s carseat from the truck, your hearts racing wildly as you made your way up the steps to the house. Penny was the first to greet you, trying her damndest not to scream.
“Oh my God!!! He’s home!!!” she exclaimed as Amelia joined her.
“He’s so little too,” Amelia observed. “Can I hold him later?”
“Maybe later,” you told her. “Let’s get him in the house before it gets too hot out here.”
Maverick and Rooster were the next two to greet you along with Rooster and his wife, Rusty, Coyote, Payback and the rest of the clan. Their sons came barreling down the hall, screaming for their favorite aunt and uncle. “Ssssh, boys you need to be quiet,” you told them. “Auggie’s asleep.”
“Hey you two go wash your hands first,” Rooster ordered. “You’ve been playing in the sandbox all day.”
Nicky and Pete disappeared, leaving just the grown ups in the living room with the baby. Not a single person in the room could get over how adorable August was or how much he looked like Bob. You carefully picked him up and cradled him in the crook of your arms, letting everybody get a good look at him.
“Hey Mom I think someone’s here,” Amelia said, peering out the window.
Everyone was a bit perturbed at the thought of who it might be until two familiar figures emerged......Phoenix and Cole.
“Who the hell is it?” Amelia mused.
A third unrecognizable figure emerged, his jeans faded with large rips and holes in the knees, his white t-shirt and olive green shirt covered in smudgings of dust with a navy blue backpack slung over one shoulder.
“Hey guys, did we miss the homecoming?” Phoenix teased as she and Cole made their way in.
“Yeah, who the hell did you bring with you?” you laughed.
The figure emerged from the doorway, yours and Bob’s jaws nearly dropping to the floor, his own blue eyes lighting up and going wide with shocked surprise. “Bobby you miss me?”
“Dad?!” Bob exclaimed.
Joe dropped his backpack on the sofa beneath the window as Bob and his father caught each other in a tight hug. “How you doin Daddy?” Joe chuckled.
Bob was caught somewhere between laughing and crying, overwhelmed with joy that his father had come in to see him. “How the hell did you get here?’ he asked.
“Took the first flight out of Oklahoma City when I heard,” Joe explained. “Spent a layover roasting on a hot, shitty tarmac at McCarron.”
Bob laughed, fixing his glasses as soon as he and his father pulled away from each other. Joe couldn’t believe how small August was at first, but just as it had been with the two of you, it was love at first sight.
“Holy shit,” Joe chuckled. “Bobby I remember when you weren’t much bigger.”
A few laughs erupted throughout the room. So many pictures and even short videos were taken.....memories that you would have for the rest of your days and with the family who meant everything to you.
