Atem pursed his lips, biting back a smile at his partners words. The little sparrow hopped around the pond, its tiny feet splashing in the puddles that had accumulated around the waters edge. "I simply did what any person would have done in my position."

Yuugi had burst into his chambers a few days ago, a tiny broken bird cradled in his hands. It had fallen from one of the trees in the garden, and even though Atem hadn't had much hope for the little guy, he had very quickly found that saying no to those innocent eyes turned on him, pleading with him to do something was impossible. And so he had summoned Mahaad, and instructed him to do everything he could to save the bird.

"I am just happy that Mahaad was able to save it. He is the one you should be thanking."

The shade that appears to him takes the form of his young lover, his violet eyes backlit in red; the same color that flows freely from its lips and the wound in its chest. It stares at Atem coldly from its place near his bedside, and it whispers in the same thin, reedy, blood-garbled tone Heba had struggled to use mere moments before his death. "...You," it muses, blinking slowly. "You promised me forever. I waited for you... I suffered countless bloody lifetimes, waiting for you."

“Heba…” The name slips past his lips in a scratchy whisper, as if all the air had been stolen from his lungs. And indeed it had, the sight of his phantom lover standing before him hitting him harder than any weapon ever could.  

He looked the same as he did on that day, the day that still haunts Atem’s dreams.

There is a pain in his chest, as sharp and strong as if someone had taken the very knife he had taken to Heba and thrust in between his ribs.  He doesn’t know what to say, but the words that fall from Heba’s mouth feel like razor blades on his skin, cutting him in places he had forgotten could feel. “I couldn’t seek you. After you died, I used my body and my spirit to seal away the Darkness. I was trapped, I had no way to search for you...” He tries to explain himself, but even to his ears the speech sounds empty, forced. He had thought it countless times himself, hadn’t he? That he hadn’t looked hard enough. That he hadn’t tried hard enough. He knew it to be true, and this apparition before him only solidified that fact in his mind. Defeat hangs heavy on his shoulders, and drips into his words.

“Why are you here? Have the gods sent you to punish me?”
