࿈ NEXT CHAPTER ▷ MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
You came like a hurricane, knocking Jake off his feet, making his knees weak and tearing him away from what he knew was solitude. He was no longer a lone boat in the middle of the sea, you're there with him— stirring up the waters and rocking his stronghold: a wall he's built to protect his heart from the ache that leaves a part of him chipped and broken.
How do you ever forget love like that? He found himself asking in his mind all too often before you, mostly when he's alone and it's just his late mate's memory that accompanies him. Now, all his thoughts are about you, flooding every nook and cranny of his mind, festering even in his feelings to the point he doesn't know what to do with himself. It is pathetic. He is pathetic for hanging on every single word you say and the little things you do like he's the young, playful and naive version of himself once again.
Initially, falling in love with you was out of the question. He was still grieving for his mate, the hurt still fresh in his memory but you were a hurricane— unpredictable and commanding without trying. He's sure that even the toughest of men would crumble when they behold you, when they see you. It was so easy to adore you but so hard to love you. Easy when you tuck his youngest to bed with a song, easy when you dote on Lo'ak despite the boy's tendencies of getting into trouble, easy when you boast about Neteyam to the other women among the clan, easy when you're the presence Kiri looks for when she's in doubt. Yet when it comes to him, you always close the door every time he tries to occupy even the littlest bit of space in your heart and mind, you snuff the fire in his resolve— it's so hard to love you because you never give him the chance to.
"Sa'nok, what is this flower for?" Innocent Tuk looks at you, head tilted to the side in pure curiosity, holding up a paywll in her small hand. She's sitting beside you on the mat, tinkering and inspecting every plant you've laid out across the drugget.
You smile at her eagerness to learn, bringing up a gentle hand to pat her head before answering, "That's a paywll, dear. It can help to soothe the skin if burned and—"
"And help speed up the healing process of a wound!" The little girl proudly intercepts, eyes bright upon remembering the plant's purpose: something she's learned from you.
You can't help but laugh, nodding your head in affirmation. "That's right!"
"Are you trying to be your ma's new apprentice?" Jake's voice fills your ears, light and teasing as he strides in towards yours and Tuk's place on the mat.
You don't know when it happened or how— you've gotten used to Tuk calling you mother despite not being her biological one, and somehow it fills your devoid heart with warmth every time you hear it from her, but when Jake addresses you as the mother of his children, that strange feeling bubbles up inside you so uncomfortably it makes you want to hide from him and from everything.
"I want to be like mama someday!" Tuktirey claims, a toothless grin present on her face.
Your eyes dart to Jake's face, gauging his facial expression like you always do when you think you're getting too close and diving in too deep— you never want to disrespect his late mate. Neytiri was a fearless woman, she made a name for herself and proved to be an amazing person through and through. But you don't see any trace of discomfort on the Olo'eyktan's face, there's nothing there but an adoring smile towards his daughter and a pensive glint in his eyes. "Yeah? Sa'nok's amazing, isn't she?"
Whether he meant you or Neytiri, you don't muse on it much. Under circumstances such as yours, things like that didn't matter.
"How did the hunt go?" You ask Jake without looking at him and despite that, you know his eyes are on you, watching your every move like a hawk. You feel his gaze on your skin, burning hot and always inquisitive like he wants to know something but never has the courage to ask.
"It went well. Näfol took down one of the biggest yerik in today's hunt." He tells you, the name of your younger brother falling past his lips so proudly it's like he's speaking of him like he was his blood relative.
Näfol has always been timid, often keeping to himself which only worsened when your parents died in battle, fighting valiantly against those wretched humans. It feels like yesterday when you were in your own village, your mother and father at your side and leading your people to enlightenment in Eywa's embrace.
"That's great." The elation in you is evident in the way you hum with a small smile, happy at the prospect of having your brother warm up to the Omaticaya people, especially their Olo'eyktan.
"Dad, I want to go outside." Tuk's voice rips you out of your thoughts and you look over at the duo sitting on your side, Tuk with her hand grasping her father's arm in a seemingly cute display of persuasion.
The sight makes you giggle a little before you turn away quickly, not wanting to invade the father and daughter's moment. You miss the way Jake's smile broadens at the sound of your laugh, hearing it in pleasant twinkling bells as he allows his daughter to take off to play with her siblings outside.
Tumblr media
Sleep has become a challenging task now, never knowing peace anymore when the constant fear of those demons returning gnaws at your sanity, but Jake makes it less of a burden when he holds you close to his chest as if you're dear to him, anchoring you back to reality in his arms, dwarfing your much smaller figure in his warmth.
"You're fine, darling. I'm here." He whispers against the skin of your forehead where he had pressed a kiss on just moments prior. His voice is groggy, a clear sign of exhaustion but just like always, he never lets you stay up all night alone, never leaves you to your own thoughts when it's most destructive.
You told him countless times— even before you consummated and made the sacred bond, that he didn't have to coddle you yet your words just seem to enter one of his ears and out the other because every night, he's always there waiting for when you come apart at the seams, showing him all your vulnerabilities.
"Jake, go back to sle—"
"I will in a moment. Just let me love on you." His arms around your waist tighten, his nose burying on top of your head, and you let him. Just like you always do because you're a hurricane: unyielding and formidable, but try as you might to dishearten a ferryman on a mission, you're but a storm that will pass— the turmoil in you will calm, maybe not so soon, but it will. Jake knows. He believes so.

࿈ PREVIOUS CHAPTER - NEXT CHAPTER ▷ MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Jake never really understood the notion of love before he came to Pandora. It's become so vague from how much the people on Earth used it so loosely to the point it's lost its true essence. It's overused, something the humans utilized as a tool to get what they want, and maybe at some point in his life, he did the same, but he's no longer who he used to be. He's Jake Sully of the Omaticaya, the one who fell in love and became one of the people.
Still, there are times when he finds it hard to grasp the reality of being in love with someone on an entirely different level, sharing a bond that goes as deep as seeing through them despite being mated once before. Don't get him wrong, he loved Neytiri with all his heart and he's certain that a part of him will always do, but it's foreign to him,  something he's only known after discovering the wonders of Eywa-eveng. A connection this deep is unfamiliar to him but that never was a hindrance. Sharing a love that amounts to everything and nothing all at once is something special that the thought of ever giving up on it never crosses his mind. Why would he give up on you?
When you and your people came to the Omaticaya, all he intended to do was help and provide you a new home. He was worried about the Tawkami people being defenseless due to their Olo'eyktan's death but you led them to him— strong and fierce yet compassionate and kind, a true leader at heart.
"We have given you aid when you came to us, now I ask of you to honor your words, Jake Sully— we lost everything we have ever known. We seek refuge."
In spite of your devastation, your voice held so much dignity, something only Jake had noticed. He was so taken and captivated without him even knowing it because at the time, he only thought he was intrigued by you, wanting to know what hides behind your resolute eyes and dignified heart.
"I want to do this."
He wasn't even surprised when you insisted to make Tsaheylu with him but not for the reason of you seeing him the way he does you, but for your people's peace of mind, for the departed and the ones still living with you. It's a sacred bond shared between those who love, the both of you know this, only your love wasn't for him while he was falling. Hard and fast.
It hurts him to see you so unhappy even when he knows it's not something he could ease with a mere "I am always with you" or tokens of appreciation simply for existing with him. Still, it never stopped him from trying to give you a life filled with joy.
"Ma'Jake… you didn't have to." You tell him, eyebrows scrunched up as you caress the exquisite trinket he gave you. It's warm against your palm, the ornament, decorated with colorful beads and only the finest ores he could find. There isn't anything special, not even any occasion to celebrate but Jake developed this habit of giving you presents any time he deems fit.
As usual, he only puts a hand on the side of your face, caressing the apple of your cheek with a fond smile. "How many times do I have to repeat myself, yawne? Just let me adore you."
The way you touch the ornament is careful, light, an action that doesn't go unnoticed by the Olo'eyktan. You sigh in defeat, looking deep into his eyes and searching for something that's not even there— something to stop you from letting him in, but it's only the image of your face that's there, only you that is present. "I am sorry… and thank you. I hope you know that I will always be grateful for the things you provide for me and my people. It's a debt I'll never be able to repay."
Jake shakes his head, a wistful smile to his lips and a sorrow-filled look in his eyes. "Your people stood with the Omaticaya against the sky people years ago, in turn, you lost your home and those who are dear to you. If anything, I am the one who's in debt, I'm only repaying all the kindness your people have given us."
You only smile at him, leaning on the hand placed against your cheek because there really isn't anything left to say— right then and there, you both understood, a mutual feeling of eternal gratefulness for the other.
Jake wants something more than that, you know he wants to be a bit closer, a little more intimate, to have at least a sliver of your heart to belong with him yet he never pushes. He's always just there, a permanent presence waiting for you to notice, but what he doesn't know is that you do.
For so long, you've always managed to convince yourself that it's the bond, just that and not the woman hiding beneath your unyielding front wanting to love and be loved. You said it was the bond when you started looking forward to every waking day beside him, the bond making its magic work when your heart starts thrumming in your chest when he looks at you and touches you so tenderly like he means it. And somehow, all through the moments you've gone on believing that there's no space for Jake in your heart, there has always been a part of you wishing to be seen by this man. He makes love seem so easy, every day less long and lonely, and the hopeless future you thought that awaits you looks more promising now that he's by your side. Perhaps, you've seen a glimpse of those too when you decided to bond with him that night— an ideal dream life you've always wanted to have since you were young.
"Jake." His name on your lips feels intoxicating yet so heavy on the heart. A dream life with Jake: unattainable and unreal, a dream. He is supposed to be the other half of you, your mate but there's no way you can ever call him yours, at least not in this lifetime. It feels wrong, like you're taking him away from where and who he truly belongs with.
Tumblr media
You squirm under the Tsahik's scrutiny but they don't bear any ill intent, just a pair of questioning eyes, full of curiosity as they jump between your eyes and your fidgeting hands. The giggles and hearty chatter of people outside the private home of Mo'at does nothing to ease your nerves, so tense in your seat and so unlike the Tsahik who looks so free and relaxed.
"Dear child, you must eat." Mo'at urges, gesturing towards the untouched food placed on a leaf plate in front of you.
You nod, clammy fingers reaching for the protein the Tsahik so gracefully cut up for you herself, taking a small bite, careful not to overwhelm your already queasy stomach. You internally thank both the Tsahik and Eywa as soon as you feel your worries ease a bit, finally having something to focus on and lessening the constant nagging insecurities in your head.
It's not like Tsahik Mo'at did anything hostile towards you or was ever unkind to you in any way but the guilt constantly reminds you that it should be her daughter in your place. It should be Neytiri who she's fretting over to eat and Neytiri who should be enjoying the life you have with Jake and their children.
The Tsahik's gentle hand hovers over your clenched fist, squeezing it lightly in hers and somehow, the comforting warmth from the tips of her fingers travels within you, loosening your nerves and soothing your thoughts to an almost clean slate— reminding you of how your mother used to ease your worries. "You need not be nervous around me, child." She says, a gentle smile on her lips.
"I— forgive me, Tsahik." You only notice the stinging pain on your bottom lip after releasing it from being bitten, and instantly, your shoulders lower in relaxation and your heart finally settles into a calm beat.
Sensing that you're finally starting to ease around her presence, Mo'at pats your hand before fully letting go so you can go back to eating. "An apology is not needed." She responds but there's something about the way she keeps looking at you, like she wants to know something but doesn't know how to word it out without it coming off as meddling.
"Is there… something you'd like to know, Tsahik?"
As soon as the words are out of your mouth, Mo'at sighs a heavy breath, sad and disappointed. For what reason, you don't know. "Y/N… your heart longs for him. You know that, don't you?"
The sudden question sends you at a standstill, the banging on your chest picks up where it left off, erratic and wild. You don't know what to say, and maybe you're thankful you don't have to say anything because she speaks again. This time, her words bear a message that weighs heavy upon your heart, one not to be ignored. "You defy her— you have, many times now. You and Jake, it was Eywa's will that brought you to us, she makes no mistake."
"Ma'Moat, I…" You find yourself empty of words still, clearly having no excuse. You have asked Eywa for signs and each time, her answers through your dreams remain the same: yellow and green colored feathers dancing along with the wind, circling a tall tawtsngal in the middle of a lush forest. The plant, tawtsngal, is familiar to you— it almost symbolizes your home as your village was once centralized by it, and although the feathers are an odd addition, they've never brought anything heavy but the lightness of their mass getting carried in the gentle wisps of air.
"You keep ignoring the signs she gives you— your eyes are open but you do not see. Tell me, child, what is it that holds you back? Why do you fear?"
Tumblr media
Why do you fear? Why do you fear? Why do you fear? Why do you—
The question lingers even after hours have passed since you left Mo'at's home. You couldn't give her an answer and she didn't pressure you into giving her one. You refused to give her an excuse without truly thinking about what you might say. She let you off, urging you to finish your food so both you and her could go back to what's left of your tasks.
Thinking about it now, you don't think you even can give her an answer without feeling guilty. You feel like a thief— it's always been about where you stand with Jake and his family, and it doesn't feel right for Neytiri's name to leave your mouth, especially in the presence of her mother.
There's a certain glint in your eyes whenever you're thinking too deeply, a slight twitch in the brow and the downward slopes of your lips when you catch yourself thinking of something daunting, are something Jake observed for a while since meeting you. To him, you're an open book, only there's a barrier that curtains between you and him which leads to never fully understanding, but Jake is not one to give up.
He approaches your lone figure sitting by the river, the gentle pats of his feet along the leaf-covered ground sounding so out of place within the pleasant noise of the forest, making you look over your shoulder. He can see the way your eyes fire up in alertness, and he can't help but feel bad for the things you had to go through in the hands of his former comrades. Yet he doesn't say anything to address it, he knows you're not fond of recalling those memories.
"Oel ngati kameie." You beam up at him, following his figure as he sits by the rock on your left side, dipping his foot into the water and disrupting the calm flow of the river— much like how he had disrupted your resting heart just a moment ago.
"Hey, beautiful." He greets you back with a playful tilt of his head and an obvious smirk. He's gotten more comfortable where he's sitting, comfortable enough to wrap a strong arm around your shoulders and bring you to his warmth. "What's going on in your head?
"I'm afraid, Jake. So, so afraid." You figured you can be honest with him, move the curtain aside to show him a glimpse of what's inside. "I am trying to decipher the answer to this one thing that bothers my heart and mind… but it's so different when you're just looking than seeing. I'm struggling with my own thoughts."
He places a hand under your chin, guiding your eyes towards his own and then you notice it— you see it. You finally see it. The yellow and green waving at you, dangling just below your mate's chin. Hiding in the shadow, there hangs a single feather as decoration to his necklace that resembles one just like in your dreams.
"Jake… that— that feather, does it hold any significant sentiment to you?"
