この光の群れの中で

人々は、地球の中で、そしてこの社会の多くの繋がりの中で生きている。

この巨大な都市「東京」も、個としての存在が集合することで「東京」ができています。それぞれの存在は個別に全てを把握することはできませんが、確かに存在する個が、この街の様々な表情をつくり、常に変化させ続けているのです。

この場所に漂う、一枚の板に切込みが入った金属の集合体は、それぞれ重力によって、つまり「地球にまかせる」ことでかたちづくられます。さらに、建物内の空気の流れや、ガラス一枚向こうの、時間帯や季節などによっても変化する光や風、昼夜で変わる街の灯や人々の様子など都市の刻々と変わる状況が、この立体をそれぞれを変化させ続けます。また、これら立体個々におこる動きや表情の変化は、集団の中で互いに影響し合いさらなる変化となるのです。これら取り巻く環境全てが立体をかたちつくり、その変化は都市の一部として互いに影響しながら、この場所の景色となるのです。それぞれの集団にとって、“個”の変化はとても小さなものかもしれません。ただ、“それぞれ”は確かに存在し、それぞれの変化の連鎖が、この場所の景色をつくっていくための大切な一つなのです。

“ある”小さなきっかけから大きな変化が生まれる。その関係の連鎖がみせる情景が、この都市の、この社会の、この世界の変わりゆく景色に向き合うための、きっかけになる作品になればと思います。

-この作品展示、場所にについて-

以前からこの東京駅周辺にある八重洲の区画をよく通りかかってました。開発やコロナ禍の2年の影響なのか少し雰囲気が変わりましたが、昼はビジネス街の顔、夜はビルの狭間に飲み屋の灯りや人の賑わいを見せ、そしてまた朝がきて、、っというように時間帯で様々に表情が変わる、生き物のような東京の熱量をここでも感じていました。

この街に立ち、日中、喫煙所にいってみたり、飲んでみたり深夜を歩いてみたりすると、俯瞰してみていた都市の表情から、ここにいる人々や店や建物一つ一つなど、“個”の存在に目がいく。この存在こそが、この場所の熱量を生み、これらが関わり影響し合うことで、この街の様々な表情をつくっているのだということが理解できます。

この“個”の存在について、他の“個”や周りとがどのように関わっているか、それがこれからどのように繋がっていくかを考えることが、最初の作業でした。

この展示では三面ガラスということもあり、そんな"個"が立ち入っては消えていく、また現れるように、ガラス面に映りこむ情景を意識し、会場自体が万華鏡になるように意識しました。

また、これまでのGravityシリーズでは、像を風景へ同化させるようしっかりとした反射面を持たせていましたが、このインスタレーションでは“個”存在を強くみせるよう、滲むようにぼやけて、周囲の光を吸収するような表面としています。

この社会、都市、国同士であっても、これら集合には”個々”の存在があります。例えば、戦争を国同士がしている場合でも、その土地に住む人や、国外にいてもお生まれた国に想いを馳せる人たちがいる。そこで生きて、子供を育てたり笑ったり泣いたり、それぞれの暮らしがある。誰かから見ればとても小さな存在かもしれない。ですが、その小さなそれぞれの繋がりの連鎖が、この景色をつくる大切な一つであることを今一度考えたいと思います。

People live within the earth and within the many connections of this society.

This huge city 'Tokyo' is also made by the aggregation of beings as individuals. Each individual existence cannot be grasped in its entirety individually, but the individuals that do indeed exist create the various faces of this city and keep it constantly changing.

Each of the metallic aggregates that float here, each cut into a single plate, is shaped by gravity, in other words, by 'letting the earth do the work'. Furthermore, the ever-changing conditions of the city, such as the flow of air inside the building, the light and wind behind a sheet of glass that changes depending on the time of day and season, and the lights and people in the city that change from day to night, cause each of these three-dimensional objects to continue to change. The changes in the movements and expressions of the individual sculptures also influence each other in the group, resulting in further changes. All of these surroundings shape the sculptures, and the changes they undergo become a part of the city, influencing each other and the landscape of this place. For each group, the changes in the "individual" may be very small. However, each "individual" certainly exists, and each chain of change is an important part of creating the landscape of this place.

A "certain" small trigger can lead to a big change. I hope that the scenes shown by this chain of relationships will be a catalyst for facing the changing landscape of this city, this society and this world.

-About the exhibition and location

I have often passed by this section of Yaesu around Tokyo Station before. The atmosphere has changed a little, perhaps due to the two years of development and the Corona disaster, but I have always felt the heat of Tokyo, which is like a living creature, changing its expression at different times of the day: the face of the business district during the day, the lights of bars and the bustle of people between the buildings at night, then morning comes again, and so on.

Standing in this city, going to a smoking place, having a drink or walking around late at night during the day, I was drawn away from the bird's eye view of the city to the presence of the individual people, shops and buildings here. It is this presence that creates the heat of the place, and it is the interaction and influence of these elements that creates the various faces of the city.

The first task was to think about how these "individuals" relate to other "individuals" and their surroundings, and how they will be connected in the future.

As this exhibition is made of three sides of glass, I was conscious of the scene reflected on the glass surface, as if such "individuals" were entering, disappearing and reappearing, so that the venue itself becomes a kaleidoscope.

In the Gravity series, the images have a firm reflective surface to assimilate them into the landscape, but in this installation, the surface is blurred and absorbs the ambient light, so that the "individual" presence can be seen more strongly. Even between societies, cities and countries, there are "individuals" in these sets. From someone else's point of view, they may be very small. However, I would like to consider once again that the chain of these small individual connections is one of the most important factors in creating this landscape.

【長文です8】 ※これより以前の話は　#長文ですシリーズ　からご覧下さい。前回の宇野さんが担当した住宅の話の続き。現場が始まり、先輩の宇野さんの従兄弟にあたる大工の(宇野)公さんが現場を担当した。大学を出たばかりの僕にとって職人さんはどこか怖い存在だった。現場で技術を習得した職人に比べたら当時の僕などはまだ何も知らないも同然だと自分でも感じていたからかもしれない。そしてその公さんは後々、独立した後の僕の現場をいくつか請負っていただくご縁につながるのですが、その時はそんな事は当然のことながら全く予想もしなかった。その住宅は登り梁構造で、屋根には表しで登り梁がかなり細かい間隔で掛けられている設計だった。しかもその登り梁が半分くらい二重に掛かっている事もあり、その数はかなりの量だった。現場ではその登り梁を建て方の時に組む前に事前に木材保護塗料を塗る事になり、宇野さんと先輩のTさんと僕の3人で事務所が休みの土日で塗る事になった。土曜日の朝、確か先輩のTさんに事務所の車(←当時所員用の車が1台事務所にあった)で岡崎の僕の実家まで迎えに来てもらい、そのまま西尾市にある加工場まで行った。山積みしてある大量の登り梁(確か5〜6mくらいの長さ)を1本1本手で下ろして並べて、転がしながら4面に塗料を刷毛で塗っていく作業でした。 1日目の夕方、半分くらいを塗り終えて帰り支度をしていると、宇野さんが「明日は用事で来れないから、明日はTちゃんと青木君の2人に任せた。」と。ええ〜！これ明日2人でやるの？翌日の日曜日の朝、再びT先輩に実家まで事務所の車で迎えに来てもらい作業再開。塗装まみれになりながら日が暮れる頃にようやく作業完了。 T先輩に実家まで送ってもらい、塗料まみれになった僕らの姿を見た母親が顔や手を拭く濡れたタオルを用意して、夕飯も一緒に食べていきなというのでTさんと一緒に夕食を食べた。普段マルシンハンバーグしか食べてない一人暮らしのT先輩(←言い過ぎw)は「美味しい！美味しい！」と言いながら食べてました。続く #長文ですシリーズ #宇野さん #T先輩 #公さん #現場 #塗装 #修行時代 #薄給時代 #青木昌則建築研究所 #マイホーム #一戸建て #新築 #家づくり #建築家 #建築家と建てる家 #設計事務所 #設計事務所愛知 #設計事務所岐阜 #設計事務所三重 #建築士 #建築 #設計 #住宅設計 #木の家 #自然素材 #丁寧な暮らし https://www.instagram.com/p/CiKjwd_rwuL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.
