Chapter 17
We see Miyao fussing over her outfit in the Miyao household and wailing out loud amongst a pile of clothes, “Ah— What on earth should I wear—?! (I don’t know—ah)”
(She is going on a date for the first time with Kurose! Ganbatte, Mugi!)
Miyao wonders out loud to herself, “It doesn’t seem good to just dress the same as usual… If I want to go for a sweeter look… A white dress is the right choice, after all…?!”
“Ugh~~~ This is so difficult~~~ I've never worn a dress before… (even though I bought one…)”
Miyao thinks, ‘...But…’, but doesn’t complete her thought, as she continues pacing around her room and realizes that time is running out. She tells herself to start with her makeup and pulls out the lipstick that she bought with Riri, saying, “...I’ll use this lipstick to go on the date…”
Miyao continues thinking, ‘After all, even if it’s just a little, I want him to think that I’m cute…!’
She says to herself, “It’s a rare opportunity that the two of us are meeting up alone, too. (That’s right!!)”
When the thought that it’s going to be just the two of them registers in Miyao’s mind, she suddenly freezes. She recalls anxiously that she and Kurose had kissed before (even though it was an accident) and starts panicking in her head, thinking, ‘Uwah, this is bad, I’m suddenly remembering that…!!’
Miyao’s phone chimes with a text from Kurose. He says, “Let’s meet at the train station at 12pm. You like cafes, right?” Looking at the text message from Kurose, Miyao thinks to herself that it still feels surreal. Nevertheless, she tells herself to go for it bravely.
Arriving at their meeting point, Miyao peeks at Kurose from behind a pillar. She instantly swoons at Kurose’s appearance, thinking, ‘Ooh… uwah—!!! So… so handsome… He looks so good just standing there…!!’
Miyao’s mind is in a mess from her nervousness, thinking, ‘Eh? Is that person waiting for me…? For real?!’ - but she calms herself down by taking a few deep breaths.
Miyao then goes up to Kurose and calls out to him nervously (with a blush), "...Ku-Kurose-kun. Sorry… Did you wait long?”
Kurose’s eyes widen at the sight of Miyao and he remains silent. Meanwhile, Miyao’s heart is racing while she thinks, ‘What is it… Does he think that I look different from usual…?!’
The silence drags on while Kurose just stares, and Miyao starts panicking in her head, going, ‘That’s weird…? I- I can’t take it anymore, I have to say something!!!’
Miyao blurts out, “Uh, c-c-cafe?! Shall we go?!”, and Kurose then answers, “...Ah—”.
Kurose gazes at Miyao again silently. She asks, “Eh… what’s wrong?”
Kurose responds, “Since we’re already here, shall we go to Kamakura?”
The two of them arrive at Kamakura and Miyao notices that there are a lot of couples around them. She comments, “It-it’s surprisingly near– (I’ve never come here before-)”
Miyao happily thinks to herself, ‘This totally feels like a date… I’m so glad!!!’
Kurose walks by a display and goes, “What’s this?”. Miyao looks and suggests that it’s a Buddha cake (and that it looks interesting).
Kurose picks one up and places it next to Miyao’s face. She cooperates by imitating the expression on the Buddha cake, which causes Kurose to chuckle. He remarks with a smile, “You’re surprisingly cooperative.”
Miyao responds, “Kurose-kun, you should do it too.”
K: No.
M: Just once.
K: No.
Suddenly, someone goes, “Ah!”
It’s Musashi and two other guys from the Knight Cafe, who have spotted them. They go, “You two…! Ohooooo—”
Miyao freaks out while Kurose maintains a poker face when they realize that they have been spotted. Miyao tries to explain, going, “Thi, this is… Um…”, but the knights are busy talking among themselves, saying, “You see?! I said so before, they were being sus!” “Don’t be so pleased with yourself, I was the one who noticed first.” “Liar!”
Miyao again tries to explain, going, “Um! I…”, but Kurose taps her shoulder and tells her sneakily, “Let’s escape.”
Miyao follows Kurose without hesitation. Meanwhile, the knights notice that they’ve run off and call out, “...Ah! Don’t run away, you two—!!”
After a while, Miyao and Kurose rest on a bench and Miyao huffs, “Hooo— That gave me a big fright— I never imagined that we’d run into them…”. Kurose answers, “It’s going to be troublesome the next time we meet them.” Chuckling, Miyao says, “You’re right–”.
Kurose notices something on Miyao. He takes out his handkerchief and wipes Miyao’s lips, startling her a little. He says that there was an eyelash on her lips.
Miyao’s heart skips a beat and she is suddenly reminded of their “kiss”. She begins, “......Um, I… Ah, about what happened in the cabinet… I’m really sorry!”
“I keep on… I’ve been thinking about apologizing…”
“I never intended for it to happen…”
Kurose answers, “...Ah– It didn’t bother me. It was an accident after all.”
Miyao seems somewhat disappointed when she hears Kurose’s reply, and she says, “...I, I see…!”, while thinking, ‘So I was the only one who was bothered by it, huh…’
Kurose suddenly mutters, “...The sea.”
When Miyao asks, “...Eh?”, Kurose says that the sea is nearby, and asks if she wants to go. Miyao’s eyes immediately light up at the thought of the sea.
In the next scene, the two of them are at the beach. Miyao is extremely excited, and she thinks, ‘We actually came to the beach together… It’d be a waste if I continue wallowing in self-pity!!!’ She enthusiastically asks if Kurose wants to compete in sandcastle building, to which Kurose gives a flat, “No.”
Miyao then notices some people nearby going, “There! A little to the left!”
A lady is posing in the water while her boyfriend (?) is giving her instructions while helping to take a photo of her.
Miyao asks Kurose what they are doing, and Kurose replies that they are taking an optical illusion photograph using forced perspective. Fascinated, Miyao exclaims that she would like to do it too. Kurose looks bored but replies, “...Just one picture, then. (How troublesome.)”
Miyao gets very pumped up, thinking that the photograph will be a good memento for today. She runs towards the sea, telling Kurose that she will pose as a mermaid in the water, while Kurose will need to use his hand to create the forced perspective and take the picture.
Miyao is shin-deep in the water and she remarks to herself that the water is cold, but she says that she will be fine since it’s a hot day. Meanwhile, Kurose goes, “A little more to the right.”
M: Here–?
K: Okay.
K: Is it too deep? (Are you able to jump?)
M: It’s fine!
M: Are you gonna take the picture? One, two-
As Miyao says, “Cheese!” for the photo, a huge wave crashes into her from behind, startling her and making her drenched (Kurose snaps the photo at this instant).
Miyao is stunned from the wave, dripping wet, with a few pieces of seaweed hanging from her arm. Kurose is equally stunned, going, “...Seaweed…”
Miyao hunches over in despair, as she thinks that her makeup (which she put in effort to do) has been destroyed. She despondently collapses into the seawater, but Kurose calls out, “Hey! Don’t just sit down there! Hurry up and come back…”
Kurose glances at the picture of Miyao that he took, and it looks hilarious. He bursts out laughing, startling Miyao. Kurose says, “This picture is the bomb. Isn’t it like, 100 times better than anybody’s?”
Miyao indignantly cries out, “Don’t… don’t kid with me—!!! Geez…”. She thinks to herself sadly, ‘This is terrible. I wanted to show him an adorable side of myself, but it completely backfired…’
Kurose steps into the water towards Miyao. She’s surprised, going, “Eh…”
Kurose does something to Miyao’s hair, telling her not to move and to stay in that position.
Miyao moves her hand towards the spot where Kurose touched her and asks what he did, but Kurose simply replies, “Just like that, look towards the sea.”, while pointing the camera at her.
Following Kurose’s instructions, Miyao goes, “? Okay…” and looks towards the sea. She thinks to herself that the waves are beautiful.
After a moment, Kurose hands his phone to Miyao, going, “There.”
When Miyao checks the picture, she finds that it’s a beautiful shot of her - and there’s a seashell in her hair. She is surprised at the seashell, and when she looks at Kurose, he is smiling warmly back at her, saying,
“It suits you very well, y’know.”
Miyao blushes, thinking, ‘You’re too sly. You’re being way too sly. I already…’
Miyao clenches her dress and begins to say, “Kurose-kun, um…”
