I saw this flyer for an Isao Takahata (高畑勲) exhibit and I got excited that both the front and back featured anime relevant to my Showa magical girl project — The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (かぐや姫の物語) and Heidi, Girl of the Alps (アルプスの少女ハイジ).
10/10 movie, the way the movie's problem is fixed still stays with me.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya:
Unflinching story about depression that makes my heart ache every time. Ghibli's underrated best.
You ever watch a movie and are like "This is one of the best things I've ever seen but also I will never watch it again because it is too many feelings"? Yeah...
The animation is so beautiful, every frame is a masterpiece.
Here are some additional images from the children’s book of The Tale of Princess Kaguya (かぐや姫の伝説), one of the Japanese folktale antecedents for the Showa magical girl genre.
Choose your favorite between these two beautifully animated films: The heartbreaking retelling of a Japanese folktale, or the struggle of a boy to continue a legacy in troubled times.
