“This is ridiculous...” he shook his head, motion barely visible because every gesture costed and they didn’t have money in the world to pay for a full reaction for him. Val found this joke of a Reaping a waste of time since his narrative had nothing to do with the Hunger Games and his presence was a waste of time and exposure for free with no point. He insisted on not going, but his agent shook her head, as patient and firm as ever, as she fought his idea. The public needed to see support, as Val needed to care about the social aspects of the community they were living in. Whoever died this year, he had to show compassion. Instead, at this explanation, he showed an eye roll before putting on the golden blazer with a dragon of black beads embedded on it. This year, he was wearing gold and black shades, because this year, indifference was fashionable and his pink sweaters not so much anymore.
The car stopped by the city hall, where thousands of sparkly children aligned proudly to take their place, secretly hoping to hear their neighbor’s name being shouted from up the stage. Val didn’t even care who would represent the Capitol that year. He just took the phone out of the pocket of his blazer and snapped a boomerang of the chaos before him.
“Welcome, welcome,” the escort started out, with no mentors to introduce as the Capitol had none of those, but with two trainers who were supposed to make up for the lack of victory in the most victorious city of Panem. As she kept talking, Valentine did the only thing he was good at and lip-synced the entire speech with his characteristic lack of amusement. The agent was meant to be amused by the little trick, and she was, smiling under her breath at the boy’s arrogance with almost pride. He was proud that he memorized the dreadful words too, but his mind flew too soon at the latest script he’d gotten in mail, not yet having accepted the role offer. The only thing in the world that could have taken his mind away from the projects he had in plan happened. Murphy’s law already told him that if something could go wrong, it would, eventually, and the wrong took form in the two words he hated most.
“Valentine Carter.” The escort read, almost confused, as she didn’t even recognize the magnitude of the name she recited. They never realized when his full name was replacing the stage one. Val waited, took his time, never hurrying to appear onstage. It was his moment - but he had so many of those that it didn’t seem to matter to linger and let it sink in. The crowd started whispering as the escort repeated the name, too blonde to understand any of it.
“Is that me?” he leaned slowly towards the agent, nonchalant as if he wasn’t realizing. Despite the oblivious question, he knew too well what it meant. It just hadn’t managed to reach him. The woman seemed to have frozen. He didn’t. With an understanding nod, Val just gave out his calmest “Okay,” yet and walked out of the crowd on the silver carpet that wasn’t red, but at least wasn’t pink either. It could have been worse.
Disinterested, he walked to the stage under the gazes of shocked Capitolites, finally recognizing him. Finally putting two and two together. He raised his hand to greet them - no wave, but a short, calculated gesture that awoke applause so loud that even he was stunned for a moment - and with that, he sauntered to the levitating microphone as if he owned it. The escort, naturally, stepped aside, astonished as well. The Capitol tended to appreciate him. It would have been cute if he could care any less. Val didn’t clear his throat. His voice was always perfect. “It’s Val Karter with a K, to the staff of the Games,” he started out with a milimetric joke people laughed too much at. Too much for his taste. He preferred silence to that annoying, obnoxious noise of crazy fans.
People were probably crying, but he didn’t care and neither did he pay attention to check for it. It was just what the press would write later on. “Thank you for the shout-out. See you all in this year’s Games,” he ended the pathetic speech on a low note, unexcited and apathetic, although not stepping back from the challenge either. It was all the same to him, after all.
The Capitol female tribute didn’t matter one bit to anybody but herself after such a big blow in the film industry of the city.
Nobody ever saw anybody famous in the Games. It was strange. People didn’t even know that celebrities could get Reaped. Val didn’t know either, to that point, and he was better in oblivion, but he wasn’t going to regret it now. Whatever would happen, would happen. He withdrew himself with applause in background, the way he was used to leave, and prepared himself to tell everybody to calm the fuck down. There were two more weeks until the funeral plannings. It was ‘whatever’. A small bit of curiosity in him wondered if his mother would cry. She did - but, to the actor, it felt like crocodile tears, refusing to open up to the woman’s sadness. She didn’t care so far so she had no excuse to care now. At least, soon, he’d never have to see any of them again.
