Why we think Snow Maiden is an aro(ace) icon

First of all, we want to note that this is our personal opinion only. Feel free to share your thoughts!

(help with the image ID would be very appreciated, we’re too afraid that we’ll do something wrong)

Hello aspec tumblr! Let’s start from afar. Snow Maiden (”Snegurochka” in original) is a character in russian folklore, fairytales and New Year holiday tradition. But I'm mainly going to focus on the folklore-inspired play by Alexander Ostrovsky "The Snow Maiden: a Spring Fairytale". Because, you see, this is the BIG one. The main reason why we think Snow Maiden is an aro (and ace) icon. It most likely wasn't a 19th century author's intention, but this is simply how we, a couple of aroaces, see it. And it's basically "Amatonormativity sucks: the play". The english-speaking part of the Internet is likely unfamiliar with this piece of literature, and we couldn’t find any decent translations online, so we’re here to tell you all about it!

P.S. The reason we write "aro(ace)" is because we focus on the aromantic identity, since adult funtime (the s word) wasn't really discussed or common in the russian literature at the time (but it was implied).

Basically the plot: A mythical pretty girl who doesn't feel love goes to live with humans, gets amatonormatovity thrown in her face left and right, loses a couple of friends because of it, gets blamed for stuff out of her control, is sad because of all this and asks her mother to give her the ability to love, falls in love for like five minutes and dies because of said ability.

Now we know that Snow Maiden being not really human is a turn-off, but a) her parents are mythical too, and they do fall in love; b) aren't aspec people magical anyway?

Of course, we could add more details. Like how the supreme deity of the local people is Yarilo, who is not only the god of the sun here, but also the god of love, apparently. Love is protected by the king - basically by law. And love (or the lack of it) is the center of the plot, so potential aromanticism is as well, not on the sidelines. Aslo, Snow Maiden isn't depicted as an emotionless monster. She is very much a person, just without romantic feelings. The girl wanted to live with humans because she wanted to have fun with them and to hear Lel' sing. Lel' is a local pastor who charms girls with his songs and music. But even this casanova can't get Snow Maiden romantically interested.

Lel': I take payment for my songs in kind words~ Snow Maiden: But that's a lowly payment - I'm kind with everyone. Lel': Well, I also take payment in kisses~ Snow Maiden: ??? That's incredibly cheap and unfair to you, what. I won't kiss you. Lel': Uh... Then pick a flower and give it to me. Snow Maiden: What for? Lel': I'll wear it, and I'll gloat that it was your gift.

Aaand then he just runs off to other girls, who are "more compliant to kisses", throwing Snow Maiden's flower on the ground. "Why would I need your withered flower?". This makes our girl very sad. It's not the first time this happened to her. All the village guys surrounded her at first, but as soon as they understood that their efforts are going nowhere, they left her all alone.

The reason falling in love is such a danger to Snow Maiden is because the supreme deity of the locals hates her dad and/or is jealous of her mom. The ability to love that Snow Maiden was granted with looks like a flower crown - not inside of her, not a part of her, but an addition, an accessory. That's just our little note, but whatever.

As you can see, we have a lot to say about this topic, and even more, but we’re afraid that nobody’s going to read a post that long. In any case, it's not a perfect aspec story, as it most likely wasn’t intended to be one, but we believe we aros and aces should reclaim it and read it with our experiences in mind. In fact, we want to make a rewrite in the future with the focus on aromanticism (and some asexuality - I'm too repulsed to write much about it).

Anyway, this is taking long already, but we hope we interested you! We’ll continue writing about this and put links to future posts right here. Or you could follow the “aro(ace) Snow Maiden” tag, if this can be done. These posts will be much shorter, but we just don’t want to make this one any longer.

❄️🎅Жуткая история происхождения Деда Мороза и его внучки🎅❄️

Сказочных новогодних персонажей придумали давным-давно и не в России — подавляющее большинство светских обрядов и традиций имеют в основе своей древние зловещие ритуалы. К примеру, нарядные ёлки, ставшие символом нового года. У ранних кельтов ель считалась обиталищем лесного духа, требовавшего кровавых жертв — внутренностей людей и животных, которые друиды регулярно развешивали на ветвях дерева. Когда окрепшая христианская церковь запретила жертвоприношения, народы Европы заменили внутренние органы шарами из дерева, которые в дальнейшем стали стеклянными, а кишки — тряпочными и бумажными гирляндами. И вот она, нарядная, на праздник к нам пришла…

Добрый дедушка Мороза и его западный прототип Санта Клаус произошли от древнего и злобного кельтского божества, Великого Старца Севера, повелителя ледяного холода и пурги. Он тоже ходил по домам с холщовым мешком, но не раздавал подарки, а собирал жертвоприношения, которые ему недодали в течение года. Визит Старца с мешком не предвещал ничего хорошего: как правило, после его ухода в доме оставались только обледеневшие трупы. Для того чтобы оградить свой поселок от ужасного визита, друиды приносили свирепому божеству общую жертву — в мороз раздевали и привязывали к дереву юную девственницу. Именно ее замерзший, покрытый инеем труп и стал прообразом веселой Снегурочки, сопровождающей Деда Мороза.

В привычном для нас облике доброго и симпатичного старичка Дед Мороз появился лишь в 1840-м году в рассказе князя Владимира Одоевского «Мороз Иванович». Это была литературная обработка народной сказки «Морозко» — вот там-то как раз и шла речь о недобром старике, очень напоминавшем кельтского Великого северного старца, который не понравившуюся ему ленивую девушку насмерть заморозил (в смягченном варианте писателя ленивице достается не смерть, а всего лишь ожерелье из сосулек). Персонаж «Морозко» народ представлял также в виде старца, который своим посохом управлял кончиной всего живого. В зимние солнцестояния этого дедулю надо было умилостивить. Ублажали его все той же юной девственницей, которую привязывали к дереву (не обязательно к ели) и оставляли замерзать в дикий мороз.

Если за день «Снегурочка» застывала — значит, жертва принята. И мешок Деда Мороза тоже поначалу был предназначен для сбора подношений. А посохом своим мерзкий старик колотил непослушных детей или запугивал их страшными сказками. Если проанализировал сказку «Морозко» на соответствие древним языческим обрядам, то всё- всё подтверждается. При внимательном чтении, в этой небольшой сказке, можно узнать много интересного - сказка наглядно показывает обряд, сродни тому, что проводили кельты, принося в жертву девственниц Старцу Севера.

А вот герои сказки: «типовой набор» многих русских сказок. Дед, дочка, мачеха и сводная сестра. Почему мачеха, а не мать. Скорее это уже более поздняя трансформация, а вначале могла быть и мать. Дело в том, что исходя из христианского мировоззрения, сложно объяснить, как родная мать могла отправить свое дитё на смерть, а мачеха очень даже способна! И вот зима. Трескучие морозы. Время Старца Севера. Дед погоревал, но дочку повез, видать знал о подобных вещах, лишних вопросов не задавал. Привез он девушку в лес и оставил под елкой.

Ёлка… ну не спроста она в сюжет введена. Ель — священное дерево у кельтов. Вечнозеленое. Дерево, в котором живут духи или боги. Наша новогодняя ёлка — то самое жертвенное дерево, у которого кельты совершали и человеческие жертвоприношения. Итак, жертву оставили замерзать у священного дерева. А старик спокойно отправился домой. По поводу разговоров девушки и Морозко, это уже скорое литературные прикрасы, дабы как-то объяснить счастливое спасение. Интересно другое. Мачеха справляет тризну по жертвуемой девушке, с чего это вдруг, она же ее любила? Блины жарит, непременный атрибут поминок. И уж совсем нелогично выглядит приказ старику ехать во второй раз в лес, забирать «останки». Ну и путь себе валяются, дикие животные растащат и следов не останется. Значит нужно, причем обязательно.

Ответ у кельтов! Они навещали жертву, смотрели через какой-то промежуток времени, жива она или нет. Если еще жива — то бог жертву не принял и ему могли преподнести новую девушку. Что и мы видим в сказке Морозко, когда мачеха взамен падчерицы, отправляет свою дочь, которую бог уже принял. Конечно, народ придал некоторую литературность, объяснив спасение одной добротой, а гибель другой «неуважением к старшим». Но это уж спустя века, когда, наверное, и про обряд этот забыли, а сказка осталась.

Кстати, почему в роли подобного посланника выступает, как правило, девочка, это легко объяснимо. Земельный надел по традиции, отмерялся по количеству мужчин в семье, женский рот в лютую годину мог оказаться лишним, поэтому и жертвовали в первую очередь тем, кто для семьи представлял наименьшую ценность.

This is a continuation of this post about why we think Ostrovsky’s Snow Maiden is aro(ace)

Wooo! Happy Aromantic Visibility Day! For such an occasion, we (finally) made a new post about Snow Maiden. And look! We even made a little banner of sorts! :D :D

Now onto some lines and dialogues from the play that, in our opinion, simply SPEAK "aro". Now note (!) that this might have some internalized arophobia caused by living in a society that puts love on a pedestal.

Tsar: Snow Maiden, your time has come - look for a lover. Snow Maiden: Where should I look for him? I don't know. Tsar: Your heart will tell you. Snow Maiden: ... My heart is silent.
