The general lore of GI Diaochan is a woman who did at one point fight. She fought a lot & watch people around her die, watched the ones she love die, watched innocent people die, & decided that, while yes fighting is at times unavoidable, it doesn’t always save lives.

Liyue already has plenty of people who can fight for it, so she doesn’t need to do that, & doesn’t want too. Her job is to keep the fighters healthy & alive, to heal them, to provide for them. Fighters are nothing without their providers, nothing without their support.

Which given how teams work is weirdly quite accurate.

Diaochan, a half-qilin, half-human Illuminated Beast, living somewhere in Liyue Harbor.

Like Ganyu, she has horns which show her illuminated blood, though they are small in comparation. Black & green in color. She usually hides her horns under two large flower ornamental hairpins. Besides this trait, she appears perfectly human.

Very young compared to other Illuminated Beasts, clocking only at 550 years old.

True to her nature as a qilin, she dislikes all fighting, even to the point of calling herself a pacifist. This holds true, as rather then fighting to protect Liyue & it’s people, she uses her words & dancing skills to inspired them, & practices medicine to heal them. 

‘While the Adepti & Qixing keep Liyue safe, I will keep it well & happy’, is a saying of hers.

Diao was present for the events of the cataclysm, at a very young age. Seeing it as a time of war, Diao took up a bow to defend Liyue from the creatures that poured out of The Chasm. She was supposedly an incredibly impressive marksmen & quick draw.

However, after witnessing so much horror & death at The Chasm left Diao horrifically mentally scared, which including witnessing the death of her qilin mother & human father. After the events of the cataclysm, she never took up her bow again & swore off all manners of violence.

Diao now instead chooses to aid Liyue through non-violent methods, & does not consider herself to be a adeptus. She is just merely ‘another citizen of Liyue, choosing to help it through her own means & methods’.

Granted Diaochan is not the same levels of Nahida in terms of being able to support others, cause you know, Nahida is a god, but Diao will try her little heart out.

Diao more then likely gets called a spineless coward everyday by other Adepti(COUGHCOUGHLOOKSATXIAOCOUGHCOUGH), so some new person coming along doing that isn’t gonna phase her.

She doesn’t need to raise her fist to get rid of evil. Other people are around for that. She literally gets other people to do it, that’s in her damn roots, from her main verse to all her aus, she gets stronger people to do the fighting she can’t do, cause she is not that powerful.

Ivy & Diao are kind of the same, in that they are both great hostesses & servers. Ivy however, does it out of enjoyment, serving others is her greatest joy, while Diao, she learned it just because it was expected of women of her time.

Diao Chan is a brave woman that deserve better then what she got in her anime. Another reason I like her DW version more, because instead of dying right after Dong Zhou and/or Lu Bu’s deaths, she just kinda disappears from the story. Which means it’s possible she lived the rest of her life in happiness.

Diao Chan, one of the Four Great Beauties of Ancient China & the original woman who crushed a kingdom with nothing but her looks & her cries.

Skilled in the arts, like music, song & dance like no other woman was. So beautiful, many debate if she ever even existed.

In the original novel, she has a romance with the great warrior Lu Bu & causes him to betray & kill his foster father, the tyrannical warlord Dong Zhuo. She was praised in tales as woman of uneven beauty who did what no other hero in China was able to accomplish, put an end to a tyrant’s regime of terror & started the eventual end of the greatest warrior of ancient times.

Diao Chan is undoubtly based on Chinese historical records that indicate Lu Bu had a secret affair with one of Dong Zhuo's maids, & he constantly feared that Dong Zhuo would find out. This was one of the reasons why he betrayed & assassinated Dong Zhuo in 192. The maid's name was not recorded in history, however, the name ‘Diao Chan’, which literally means "sable cicada", is believed to have been derived from the sable tails & jade decorations in the shape of cicadas which adorned the hats of high-ranking officials in the Eastern Han dynasty.

Wang Yun using his adopted daughter as a means to put diplomats at ease with her charm, beauty & delightful hostess skills is basically canon.
