Hiiiiii!!! Since it’s back to school season you should write a blurb where Steve and Reader get emotional sending Avery to school for the first time in your KBD universe!!
thank you for your request ♡ kisses before dinner —you and steve have a tumultuous morning on avery's first day of school. mom!reader, 3k
"Oh, fuck," Steve mumbles into his pillow, cheek wet with drool. "Shit." He drags his face up to look at the alarm clock for the third time that morning, having slept on and off for hours. He can't believe he's awake again.
"I think you have to admit defeat," you say softly from the vanity. Steve turns, finds you sitting slouched with a brush in your hands, applying powder to your cheek carefully. "I couldn't sleep either."
Steve groans at his ever present back ache and sits up. The comforter falls down into his lap, his naked chest exposed. He scratches at his collarbone mindlessly. "You think it'll be really hard?" he asks, knowing you'll know what he's saying. You always do.
You put down the brush, turning a very sympathetic smile his way. "I think it will be awful. But you'll be okay, Steve. She needs to go. And she's excited!" You nod toward Avery's room. "Can't you hear her?"
Steve gets up without checking for himself. He slinks out of your bedroom and onto the landing, where Avery's door is ajar.
"Hey," he says, opening the door with his foot. "You okay?"
Ash blonde hair like a riot around her face and pyjamas in disarray, Avery sees Steve in the doorway and beams, doing a wiggly half dance by her dresser. "Daddy! It's my first day at school!"
"I know," he croons, or attempts to, his voice still hoarse from sleep. "I'm just gonna shower, and then we'll start getting ready. You hungry?"
"Are you still gonna do my hair like mommy's?" she asks.
"Yeah, just like mom's."
Steve's reassured by her smile even if he's feeling about as anxious as the day he found out you were pregnant the first time (ecstatic, terrified, in love and bricking it). He showers in three minutes, an expert in the art of wicked fast washing and in anticipation of Dove's imminent waking. Sure enough, he's crossing the landing back to the master bedroom with a towel around his waist when a cry sounds from behind him.
You appear in the doorway dressed for work and somehow prettier than you were yesterday. It doesn't fade no matter what people say, Steve still has a huge crush on you, and it feels like a gift to have you stroke a line down his tacky arm as you pass.
"I have it, handsome." You take a step back and he pauses on instinct. Your hand cups his face. "It won't be as bad as you're thinking. I promise." You stroke his cheek. "Yeah?"
"I'm fine," he lies.
Dove cries louder. You take your hand back. "Okay. Get dressed. I'll make breakfast."
Steve does as he's told. Bethie tries to barge into the bedroom while he's changing, and he laughs at her dejected sigh. "It's not opening," she says, nearly three and a half and sounding it, her voice still cutely disjointed.
"I'm just getting dressed, Beth. Mommy's making breakfast, you want waffles or something?"
"I can't get down the stairs," she mumbles. Steve almost misses it.
He throws a shirt on and yanks a comb through his hair. Bethie's standing expectantly by the door when he opens it, your image completely. Steve's seen the rare baby photo of you and he's surprised every time; you could switch it out with a photo of Bethie and he's sure he wouldn't notice, though her nose might look a little different.
"Hey, pretty girl. Trapped?"
"They'd left me up here with you," she says.
Talkative this morning, he thinks. "I can see that. Excuse me then, babe, and we'll get this gate open."
Steve hates the baby gates. He doesn't think they're necessary, but he knows he'd think that until the day one of his poor girls took a dive. You hate them too for being so finicky. Maybe in a couple of months when Dove's walking you'll take them down.
He opens the gate and takes a few steps, holding a hand out for Bethie. Fingers wrapped around hers, they descend the stairs and approached the second dreaded baby gate where Avery's waiting. She pinches the lock and pulls up the handle for them surprisingly easily.
"Thank you," he says to her, stepping over the lip of it and assisting Beth down those last few steps. She wobbles.
"Dad, when can we get ready?" Avery asks.
Steve checks his watch. "Uh, soon as you finish breakfast."
"I finished already."
"No you didn't!" you call. "Come on! Come and eat this egg before it goes cold."
"I wanted a waffle," Avery says.
"Don't tell me, tell your mom. I'm sure she'll make you something else."
Avery spirits away. Steve watches her go and decides maybe he can't do this after all, sweeping Bethie into his arms to hug close to his chest. "Don't grow up, Beth. Promise?"
She looks at him lovingly. "Promise." She offers her tiny pinky.
You're not so stressed in the kitchen. Or, Steve may not think so. Inside you're a ball of agony. You're acting as normal as you can, knowing Steve will take the change harder; he's spent almost every hour of every day with Avery for nearly six years, to suddenly have her gone will feel wrong, and strange, and achy.
He'll understand how you feel going to work every day. Missing your family becomes a second feeling that trails behind you, not always sad, but there nonetheless. You'll be sitting at your desk wishing a little back was pressed to your chest, or that there were a hand in your hair. Or, when things are especially boring, you long for a whiny shout, "Mommy!" said over and over.
It isn't his fault, of course, and it's not even the thing that's hurting. Just. Avery's getting older no matter how much you wish she'd stay the same, for a day, an hour. If you could just stop time and hold her for a bit, you'd feel better.
Time doesn't stop. You make her a waffle and eat her cold egg, Dove spits up on your blazer and you have to get changed. Steve struggles to get Avery ready in her bedroom while Bethie crowds his legs, and you can't help. Your second blazer has a peach juice stain and the third has been personalised with a blue marker. You can't find anything to wear.
You scrub the spit up off of the shoulder in the bathroom and trudge to Avery's room to ask Steve if he can tell.
Avery's standing in front of her mirror, and she looks perfect.
And she looks so old.
Surprise spreads like a bruise, like you've been winded, a flat palm pressing with force against the gentle structure of your diaphragm. You grip the blazer in your hands until the fabric squeaks, eyes on Avery's hair, her shoulders, her new dress and shoes. She spins on her heels when she sees you in the mirror and poses proudly.
"Doesn't it look nice, mommy?" she asks.
You frown at her. Your breath catches in your throat, your eyes turning warm, your whole face. "You look really nice, sweetheart," you say, blinking to dispel the moisture in your eyes before it can turn to tears."Daddy did a good job."
"Are you okay?" Avery asks.
You try to turn your frown to a smile, the expression one Avery isn't used to seeing. Panicked, she looks to Steve, who's already looking at you tenderly.
"I'm sorry," you say. It aches in your cheeks. Being a parent means hiding how you feel when it's bad, but you're grasping at the air for a reassurance that isn't there. She's never going to stop getting older. And this is a beautiful thing in reality.
Right now, it's terrifying.
"You look lovely," you say, swiping at tears as they tip. "I'm really sorry, Avery, I'm okay. You look so beautiful, honey."
Steve crouches down by Avery's side, hands on her waist. "This is going to sound silly, because you're so excited about going to school, but me and your mommy are just a little sad."
"You're sad because I'm going to school?" Avery asks.
You nod, shame-faced, "A bit."
"Well, I won't go," she says in confusion.
You close the distance between you and hold her chin in your hand. "You have to go! I want you to go, I promise. I want you to meet new friends, and learn new things. I can't wait for you to see the whole world."
"Then why are you crying?" she asks.
You push your thumb into the corner of her mouth and make her smile. "You'll understand when you're older," you say.
She groans. "Mom, I want to know now."
"I can't explain it." You kiss her soft forehead. "Sorry." You kiss her forehead again. "Sorry. You really look beautiful, and I know you're going to have a good day. They won't know what to do with you."
You arranged to start work late so you can see her off for her first day and help if drop off becomes too much for Steve to do alone. Now that Avery's old enough for school, she'll need to be dropped off and picked up everyday, and your working hours don't allow for you to do it. This means Steve will have to get all three girls ready every day. They can't wait in the car by themselves. It's a lot more than he's used to doing, which isn't to say he doesn't keep his girls clean and clothed in fresh jammies. He takes them grocery shopping and to the movies and Aunt Robin's house by himself all the time, it's not a difficult task (most of the time) but it takes work. It's going to be a lot for him.
He can do it, obviously. You just wish you could be more helpful. You tried to talk your boss into an earlier start time so you could finish in time to grab Avery and save him the trip, but it meant you'd start work at 6AM. Nobody would be there to let you in, and it was deemed 'unfeasible'.
You worry about it on the ride there. Three girls in car seats, you in the front, they're hard to handle. Avery's far away in the very back, the third row, while Dove whines in the second, Bethie behind you asking if she can come and sit in your lap.
"Sorry, lovely. Two minutes, okay? Two minutes and we'll be there."
Steve shouts over your placating, "How are you feeling, Avey-Bear?"
"I feel good, dad!"
"It's the left entrance, right?" Steve asks you.
"Yeah, with the big crayon mural. Dove, I know! I can see it! Is it too tight? Let mommy have a look."
You lean through the seats. Steve takes a hand from the wheel to hold your side up and stop you from collapsing forward as you fiddle with Dove's seat straps. This chaos cannot be a good sign, you think.
You pull into the lot. Kids are everywhere, hundreds of them flooding toward the elementary school like ants carving paths through grass and sidewalk. The air smells like pine trees as you step out of the car.
While grizzly, you're pleased to find that your girls look good. Smart, well-loved. You grab Bethie, her seat behind yours, and Steve takes Dove. Avery unclasps her own car seat and climbs over the second row to slide out by your legs.
"Nice job, babe," you say, holding up your hand. Avery high fives you.
Soon as Steve's ready, you take Avery's hand with Bethie perched as a heavy weight on your hip. She's too big to need carrying and you'll have to put her down sooner rather than later, but for now you hold her, mind racing as she asks, "Mommy, do I go with Avery?"
"No, sweetheart, I'm sorry. Avery's going by herself."
And what the fuck? you think, looking down at Avery where she squeezes your hand, the skirt of her dress swishing side to side as she skips. How can she be doing this by herself? She doesn't seem old enough. How can anybody expect her to do this?
Bethie rests her cheek on your shoulder. "That's OK. I want to be with you."
She's not going to be pleased in another half an hour, then, but that's a future problem.
Steve trudges behind you like a man walking to his death. You're not exaggerating when you think to yourself about how pale he's gone, his cheeks devoid of any colour.
You follow the path past the school gates and into its playground. Most kids stay waiting with their parents while younger ones crowd the jungle gym, though there are some you recognise from playgroups and the local playground. You've accidentally cut it a bit close, not expecting the girls to be as hard to get into the car as they'd been, and the bell rings to call everyone inside only thirty seconds later.
Children call goodbye to their parents. Avery had an orientation day a little while ago and knows where she has to go, but for the first time that morning, she hesitates.
"You okay?" Steve asks her.
She looks between you both and her sisters with a funny kind of smile. Altogether too grown up. "Will it be okay?" she asks.
"What, school?" he asks. "School is going to be awesome. You are going to have so much fun."
She licks her lips, thinking. You step forward ro fuss with her hair, every bit of it perfect. She looks up into your face and you plaster a smile over your worries. The longer you look at her, the more authentic it becomes.
"You make things amazing everywhere you go. School won't be any different," you promise.
"Quick, kiss before you go to the classroom," Steve says.
You get yours first. Avery goes on tiptoes to kiss you, then Bethie, who laughs. Steve crouches down to get his, stealing a too-long hug with her as Dove wriggles under his arm.
"Love you." Steve pats her shoulder. "See you in a couple of hours. We'll go get a treat for you being this brave."
Avery holds her lunchbox to her stomach and nods excitedly. "Okie dokie. I love you." She waves at Dove. "Bye-bye, Dove."
Dove looks at Avery like she's an alien. Her confusion lasts, lips puckering into a pout as Avery races toward the school door and disappears from view.
"Ready to go?" you ask Steve gently.
"I think I'll just… we'll just wait for a bit, in case she forgot something."
You fight another wave of heat as it gathers behind your eyes. Steve looks so sad that it's making you sad too. "Sure, honey. Let's wait a bit."
You aren't expecting Avery to have actually forgotten something, but she rockets from the door looking terrified. Steve seems surprised that she really needed something too, though he doesn't waver.
"We're still here," he calls as she runs up to you.
"Dad," she says, breathless, putting her hand on his knee, "what do I say?"
"To who?"
"To the other girls!"
Steve rubs her cheek with a forefinger fondly. "Hello is a good start. You could say… Hi, I'm Avery Harrington. I have two little sisters, a pet fish, and my favourite colour is lilac."
She nods like she thinks this is a great idea. "I'm Avery, and I have two sisters and my fish and my favourite colour is lilac," she repeats verbatim. "What about you and mom?"
Steve blinks, pleased. "Uh."
You grin, saying, "What about, my mom and dad are best friends?"
Avery nods again, little chin dipping severely. "My mom and dad are best friends. Okay. Okay, thank you, I'm going back now."
Steve steals another kiss before she can run off. "Have a good day, honey."
"I will!" she shouts, spinning on her heel. You listen to her leave, her lunchbox making a metallic clicking sound, her shoes squeaking on paving stones.
She's gone a full minute before either of you attempt to leave, a strange silence between you. Eventually Steve wraps his arm around your shoulders, and you make your way back to the car.
"You okay?" you ask him.
He's pink around the eyes, but he says, "I'm okay. She looked really excited, right?"
You kiss his cheek. "It'll be alright."
"I know. Just feel really fucking weird."
Bethie claps a hand over her mouth with a little pop. Steve imitates her, eyes glowing with bemusement. "Who said that?" he asks.
She giggles in that syrupy way kids do when they know they're doing something naughty. "That's a bad word."
"I'm allowed one bad word today, Bethie. They said so."
"Who?" Bethie asks.
Steve shrugs his shoulders. "I don't know. You expect me to know everything, little miss, how'm I supposed to know everything?"
Bethie wraps an arm behind your neck.
"What's he doing to you?" you ask, arms on fire from carrying her this long and with no intent to put her down. "Daddy's not being very nice, is he? Asking my little girl all these big questions."
Your soft crooning has her like jelly in your arms. Steve relaxes in turn looking at her, his hands petting at Dove's back. "They're ganging up on me," he says to her, in a similar sweet tone, searching Dove's face for some affection. "You're not going to pick their side, are you?"
Dove pouts for a kiss.
Steve is ecstatic, Dove never so generous. He kisses her gently, and rubs his forehead against hers to tickle her with his hair.
"Mommy's gotta go to work," you remind him.
"Do you?" he asks, not looking up from Dove's affection.
"Unfortunately."
"They're taking my girls from me one by one. I thought missing you every day was bad enough, now I don't get my Avery… I hate everything."
"I know. It doesn't feel this awful all the time, I promise."
He makes a grateful sound. "I'll take your word for it. Thanks, honey."
You squeeze his bicep. "You're welcome."

episode one: MADMAX
Steve is looking at Nancy so tenderly, and when he removes his sunglasses you see how much his eyes light up when she hits his shoulder and leans in close to him.  “I missed you,” Steve tells her, his voice soft and sensual.  It’s the way he says it that makes you want to run your hands through his hair, be the one in his arms as he kisses your neck and whispers how often he’s thought of you since you’ve been gone. You’ve felt his arms around you before, once. You know how securely he holds on, how his cologne lingers on your clothes long after he’s gone. You miss him, you miss everything.
Summary: what does steve fear more ? you or the plague ? currently it's you, some guy with an awful mullet stares you down in the parking lot (gross), nancy invites you to a party from your nightmares, and you become an official unlicensed therapist for will. yay for junior year !

October 29th, 1984
You originally gave Dustin the phone number to Bookstrordinary in case of any emergencies.
Now, you’re really starting to regret it.
For the fifth time this week, Dustin calls you at work to beg for money. Him and the boys recently started going to an arcade that’s opened up in town and have spent practically every day after school there this year. Sure, you don’t mind loaning your brother a few quarters, but at the rate he’s going he’s gonna drain your next paycheck.
Just as you’re thinking this, the phone rings.
Right on cue.
Alex, your coworker, smirks. “How much do you think he’ll ask for this time?”
“If I’m lucky, only a dollar.”
“Will asked me for three tonight, so I wouldn’t jinx anything.”
You gape at Jonathan, who has started hanging around your job after school just to have something to do. “No fucking way.”
“Way,” he laughs, pointing towards the phone on the counter. “Answer before Dustin sends a drone our way.”
You sigh and pick up the phone, which is on its second round of calling, and put on your best customer service voice. “You’ve reached Bookstrordinary, may I ask who is calling?”
“Don’t play dumb, Y/N.”
“Aw, I’m doing well tonight. Thanks for asking, Dustin.”
“I need five dollars.”
“Ya know, ‘please’ has such a nice ring to it.”
“... if I say please, will you give me the money?”
“No.”
Silence fills the other end. Alex and Jonathan are hunched together, trying to stifle their laughs. You send them a thumbs up, and they give you one back.
“You’re a horrible sister.”
“What!” You scoff at Dustin. “I think you owe me like, at least ten bucks now. Yet you don’t see me complaining.”
A loud groan, then an obnoxious scream. “I promise I’ll clean Mews’ litter box for a week straight if you just give me the money.”
“Tempting, and honestly I’d take you up on that offer, but I already spent my last paycheck on my Halloween costume. You’re outta luck.”
Dustin gasps. “You were gonna say no this whole time? You just wasted like, at least five minutes of my time! I could’ve been digging through the couch for coins by now!”
“Jesus,” you pull the phone away from your face as Dustin continues to shout. Jonathan lets out a loud cackle and Alex just shakes his head. “I can give you some money next week–”
The line cuts off. Dustin has hung up.
What a little shit.
“You remind me why I’m grateful I’m an only child.” Alex says, now walking from behind the counter to begin stacking some books. Technically your shift ended almost thirty minutes ago, but you and Jonathan prefer to hang around for a while. It’s rare to have some time with just the two of you (even if Alex is there as an unfortunate third wheel).
“Glad I can help.” You respond. Once he’s gone, you turn to Jonathan. “And you were right, Dustin indeed wanted more than Will’s measly three bucks.”
He laughs. “Figured as much. The look on your face was genuine disbelief when he asked.”
“Mhm, I’m scared these boys will turn into horrendous teens. The lack of gentlemen in Hawkins these days is astounding.”
“C’mon, I’d say I’m a gentleman. I mean, I’m riding on your bike pegs tonight to keep you safe.” Jonathan says, waving an arm in front of his body as if to present all his gentleman-ness to you.
“Sure, bee.” Although, he has a point. Joyce has the car tonight so she can drive Will to the arcade and Jonathan doesn’t like you biking home in the dark. After what happened last year, none of the Byers are particularly keen on letting their loved ones go off alone at night. So, to ensure your safety, Jonathan has started riding on your bike pegs all the way home.
It’s endearing really, wholly unnecessary, but endearing.
Jonathan flicks your nose. “Who else would be such a gentleman to you? Steve?”
Hearing Steve’s name sends a wave of varying emotions through you. Guilt, shame, remorse, longing. You miss him. You really, really miss him.
“I thought we agreed to stop talking about Steve.” You mumble, now busying yourself with a piece of paper on the counter.
After Will was found last year, you and Steve had gotten really close. He’d spend hours bugging you at work, he’d gotten you such a lovely Christmas gift that still hangs on your wall, and you’d grown close with him in a way you haven’t before with anyone else. He would’ve done anything for you, he cared about you with such genuineness, and you couldn’t handle it.
Summer came and the heat that came with it scared you.
You’d pushed Steve away, severed any connection you had to him. It was easier when you didn’t have to see him every day at school, but ever since junior year started, you’ve been in your own personal hell.
Steve walks past you in the halls without batting an eye. He doesn’t look your way, like the months you spent learning every inch of his wonderfully unique brain and the moles scattered along his face never happened; he doesn’t give you that smile that makes your knees weak. He’s avoided you like the fucking plague, which you can’t blame him for, but it’s only made things more awkward between him, Jonathan, Nancy, and you.
Jonathan sighs. “I’m sorry, bug. I just… he seemed good for you, ya know? I was actually starting to like the guy before you suddenly stopped hanging around him.”
You play with the piece of paper, hoping that if you don’t respond then Jonathan will just drop the subject, but a thought seems to cross his mind.
“Wait a minute. Steve didn’t like, hurt you or anything, right?” You don’t respond again and now he’s starting to get worried. “Y/N, I’m serious. Did he do something to you?”
The irony of the situation is so comical you want to laugh. Here Jonathan is, demanding to know if Steve hurt you and if that’s why you’ve stopped being his friend, when in reality it’d been Jonathan who hurt you. Jonathan, your oldest and dearest friend, is the reason you’re so fucking terrified of letting Steve in. Of falling in love with him.
You’re already in love with Jonathan, you can’t put yourself through any more hurt.
But fuck, you miss Steve. You’d come to rely on him and his obnoxious sense of humor that never failed to make you laugh. The way he so effortlessly filled the room with warmth.
“Relax, bee. He didn’t do anything. I just wanted to focus on Will and the boys more.” You lie through your teeth.
He gives you a funny look. “I know you care about the boys, but you know they’d want you to have some other friends.”
“I have you, that’s all I need.”
It’s all I can afford.
“Bug, I’m worried about you. You’ve all but thrown yourself into school, you work non stop here, and when you finally have some free time you’re spending it researching child psych for Will–”
“Just drop it, Jonathan!” You finally snap at your friend.
He stops, surprised by your outburst. He can see the angry flush in your cheeks now and the slight heavy breathing you do to try and calm yourself down. Jonathan drops his shoulders, defeated. He’s been worried about you ever since junior year started. You’re more withdrawn, you look like you haven’t slept at all, and now you don’t even feel comfortable telling him what’s been bothering you.
All Jonathan knows is that one day you were glowing while telling him a story about Steve and his stupid jokes, then the next day you looked frail and sickly as you told him that Steve was no longer visiting you at work.
Something happened between you two, he’s just not sure what or how to even help.
For once, Jonathan is at a loss.
“And then she chased Mike all the way down the street for her money! He got away!” Jonathan finishes his story with a grand flourish, laughing and hitting his steering wheel as if it’s the funniest thing in the world.
You let out a weak laugh, exhausted from the night before. It’s early morning and you’re in the school parking lot, hanging in Jonathan’s car as always, and you feel like utter shit. You stayed up late last night reading this journal you’d found in the school library about acute trauma in children. It had been fascinating and there were some things you thought could apply to Will. Before you knew it, it had been three in the morning and you needed to be up soon for school.
Which leads you to now: slouched in the passenger seat, sunglasses over your eyes to block out the annoying sun, tiredly listening to Jonathan’s recounting of his phone call with Nancy from last night. Apparently they’ve progressed to nightly phone calls now.
Lovely.
Without meaning to, your eyes start to drift shut. The car is the perfect cozy kind of warm and the late October air wraps around you as if to lull you to sleep. Jonathan notices you’ve gone quiet and pokes your cheek.
“If you fell asleep I’ll tell your mom and she’ll put you back on house arrest.”
You slap his hand away. “Don’t do that, then she’ll just ban me from your house.”
“You were up all night researching again, weren’t you.”
“If you have to ask, then that’s probably your answer.”
“Y/N–”
You put a finger up, using your other hand to rub at your temples. A headache is forming and you’re three seconds away from just skipping first period to nap in the car. “We aren’t doing this again. Drop it.”
Jonathan rolls his eyes. “I’m your best friend, it’s my job to worry about you–”
“And it’s my job to tell you to fuck off whenever you’re getting on my nerves–”
Suddenly a loud blue camaro comes speeding into the school parking lot, effectively drowning out whatever you’d been saying to Jonathan. The car revs its engine and almost hits a few students as it jerks its tires and then screeches to a halt, parking right next to you guys.
You and Jonathan look at each other.
“What the fuck?” You look out your window and are greeted with the sight of an attractive blond guy staring at you. His music is blasting so loud you can hear it through Jonathan’s windows.
“Jonathan,” you whisper, getting his attention. “Am I really tired or is there a guy with a god awful mullet staring at me right now?”
“He’s real.”
“Cool.” You continue to stare at the guy, unsure what to do. You’ve never seen him before, there’s no way you’d forget a face like that in Hawkins. He’s attractive, almost unappealingly attractive, and there’s a coldness to his beauty that makes you uncomfortable. He looks dangerous, like he knows how much power his beauty brings him.
The boy winks at you, a lit cigarette dangling from his mouth, and then gets out of the car, slamming his door rather harshly. It’s then that you notice the redhead girl, much younger than him, possibly around Dustin’s age, getting out of the car as well. She slams her own door and doesn’t even spare the guy a glance as she drops her skateboard down and rides towards the middle school across the parking lot.
Meanwhile the boy saunters inside, a lazy pace in his step that also holds immense confidence. He’s cocky, cool and collected, and he takes one last look around, as if to survey his new claimed battleground. You notice a few of your classmates gazing at him with interest, which you don’t really understand. He’s hot, but his attitude alone tells you everything you need to know about him.
Once he’s gone, Jonathan finally speaks. “Who was that guy?”
“No clue,” your eyes linger on the doors he’s just walked through. There’s something off about him. “But I don’t think we want to know… C’mon, if we don’t head in now we’ll be late for our first class.”
During your lunch period everyone’s buzzing about some upcoming Halloween party. As you’re walking towards your locker with Jonathan, you notice a few pieces of orange paper being passed around. You don’t pay much attention to them, but when Nancy joins you two she eagerly takes a few from the girl passing them out.
Nancy playfully shoves the papers at you and Jonathan. “You guys are totally coming to this.”
“We are?” You ask, eyeing the flyer wearily. You have nothing against parties, but the thought of being surrounded by a bunch of drunk teenagers in horrible costumes is frankly terrifying to you.
“You sure are, Y/N.”
“But Nancy–”
“‘Come and get sheet faced’.” Jonathan reads aloud. “Yeah, Nance. I think we’ll pass.”
Nancy groans. “I can’t let you guys sit all alone on Halloween. That’s just not acceptable.”
“Actually,” you correct her, annoyed by the assumption, “we have a tradition with the boys. We take them out every year to trick or treat and it’s always been fun. We won’t be ‘alone’.”
“No offense, Y/N, but spending Halloween with a bunch of middle schoolers isn’t much better.”
You make a face and look over at Jonathan for help, but he shrugs. “You gotta admit, it is kinda lame.”
“I can’t believe you’d betray me like this–”
Nancy smiles at this. “See? Plus, I doubt trick or treating with the boys will take all night. You’ll be home by 8:00, and Jonathan will be listening to the Talking Heads and reading Vonnegut or something, while you, my dear Y/N, will be baking a fresh batch of cookies and throwing away all the candy corn you find.”
“Sounds like a nice night.” Jonathan responds, and you nudge your shoulder with his. It does sound like a nice night, one you’re looking forward to.
“I forgive you for your earlier betrayal.”
“Guys!” Nancy stops at her locker now, slight frustration in her voice. “Just… Come on! I mean, who knows? You guys might meet someone and–”
Her words are cut off with a squeal as she’s suddenly lifted in the air and spun around, Steve having snuck up behind her. Nancy now puts all her attention on him, he has his arms wrapped low on her waist and he’s wearing sunglasses inside like some idiot, and your heart hurts. He looks good, too good.
Steve, as if sensing what you’re thinking, risks a look at you. Your eyes meet his and for a brief second no one else exists anymore. It’s just you and him in the small Hawkins high school hallway, where he’s yours again in a way that’s clouded with “almost” and “not enough”, and you want to tell him how lovely he is and how horrible you feel for hurting him, but then he diverts his gaze and focuses back on Nancy and you’re thrown back into reality.
He isn’t yours. Hell, he isn’t even your friend anymore, and you’re the one to blame.
Once Nancy and Steve start kissing, you share a disgusted look with Jonathan and silently agree to leave.
“Young love, huh?” Jonathan jokes bitterly when you’ve left them behind.
“I hate it.”
And you do.
You’re really starting to hate this whole “love” thing.
The only highlight so far this school year has been you and Will growing even closer. When Jonathan told you that Will started seeing the Hawkins Lab people for treatment and to see how he’s been recovering, you pulled Joyce aside later that night to ask if it’d be okay if you spoke with Will yourself. Since everything that happened last year, you’ve only become more interested in psychology, and you’d be lying if you said Will wasn’t an interesting case study.
You told Joyce that you’d been doing your own research, reading journals upon journals, and she made you a deal. You could help Will as long as you also took care of yourself, that you wouldn’t place an even heavier burden upon yourself. Of course you agreed, promising her you wouldn’t, and that’s how your weekly chats with Will began.
Jonathan had been against it at first, telling you that you didn’t have to worry about Will because you already do everything else for the kids. You told him you could handle it, and secretly you liked helping Will because you were able to pour all your anxiety and complex feelings for Steve into research and studying. It was a win-win in your eyes.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Waters had been extremely understanding when you asked for Wednesdays off. After all, you’d been working at Bookstrordinary for almost three years now, so she was quick to make the accommodation.
Now here you are, another Wednesday spent at the Byers’ home. You’re sitting with Will in his bed, the both of you quietly scribbling with his crayons. You’ve learned that he’s more receptive if you draw with him, if you take your time.
“How was Dr. Owens today?”
Will pauses mid-scribble. “Fine.”
“Just ‘fine’? Nothing else?” Your head is down so he doesn’t think you’re studying his reactions, but you keep an eye on him anyways.
“Yeah. I told him about my latest episode.”
“You had another one? Would you like to tell me when?”
Will thinks for a moment, and you tell him that he of course doesn’t have to say anything if he doesn’t want to.
“Last night. I was back in the Upside Down… and there was this… this thing.”
Now you stop drawing. “Like the monster we killed last year?”
“Different,” he shakes his head. “This thing was evil.”
Will’s eyes are darting everywhere around the room, and you can see his growing unease, so you decide to put the topic to rest for now. Clearly the episodes are getting worse, scaring him more, so you shift gears.
“Okay, I believe you. I’m sorry for the episodes, but besides them how have you been feeling? Is school getting any better?” Earlier this month Will had confessed to you about the kids in school calling him “zombie boy” and treating him like a freak. You did your best to comfort him, and once you finished your chat with the boy you’d gone to Joyce to let her know.
Will sighs. “School is… school.”
You reach out and move some hair out of Will’s face. “I’m sorry, little bee. Middle schoolers are idiots, they’ll never understand how much you went through. I mean, I had to face that monster for only about twenty minutes. You had to hide from it for days, so you’re honestly incredibly braver than me.”
This gets a smile out of Will, which you’re relieved by. He’s been quiet lately, more closed off, and you’re worried that with the one year anniversary coming up, his episodes will only get worse.
A knock on the door, and then Jonathan pokes his head in. “Hey, guys. Mind if I join?”
“Actually, I think I should go. Bob’s been begging me for my cookie recipe, so I’ll leave you two alone.” You send a look Will’s way, a you better talk to your brother about this look, and he weakly nods his head.
As you walk past Jonathan out the door, you lean in close to Jonathan and whisper, “he’s struggling at school. Be gentle, kids can be fucking awful.”
He nods and squeezes your hand, silently thanking you, and you close the door behind you. While you want to help Will, make sure he’s adapting well, you also recognize your limits. He’s not your brother, Jonathan is, and you know he’ll be more open with him.
Joyce is in the kitchen with Bob, making some popcorn over the stove. He’s filming her with his ridiculously large camera and you can’t help but smile as you watch them. Joyce looks so happy around the guy, laughing more than she’s laughed in the last five or so years you’ve known her. She deserves this, she deserves a guy like Bob. Sweet, slightly silly, but good.
When Joyce sees you lingering in the doorway, she waves you in. “Hey, honey. Any luck with Will tonight?”
“A bit, he told me some of what’s happening at school. He still seems… off, but at least he was opening up. It’s a good sign.”
Joyce hums, but you can sense that there’s more on her mind. You look around to make sure Bob isn’t near, he’s busy digging through a cabinet to find a clean bowl, so you move closer to the woman and lower your voice. “What did Dr. Owens say this time?”
“Claims we need to just pretend everything is okay, despite the fact that it’s getting worse.”
There’s an edge in Joyce’s voice, so you’re careful with your words. “Well… I think he’s right.”
“You do?” Joyce turns to you, her voice loud with surprise, before she quickly remembers Bob is near and lowers it again. “Why do you think that?”
“I was up late reading a new journal I found about acute trauma in children. It’s been almost a year since Will disappeared, he spent days in complete fear, almost died… I mean, it makes sense that his body is remembering those traumatic effects.”
“So you think we should just leave Will alone, let him suffer through his episodes without any help?” There’s more confusion and fear than anger in Joyce’s voice, and you rest your hand against her arm.
“I know it seems counterintuitive, but the best studies we have all show that we have to let those who suffer from post-traumatic stress adapt at their own pace, through their own ways. They hate feeling pitied, and I have a feeling Will is starting to as well.”
Joyce turns the stove off and shakes her head at you. “You sound like Hop. I thought you hated the guy.”
“I don’t hate him,” you chuckle, now helping the woman peel off the foil and sprinkle some salt onto the popcorn. “He just reminds me too much of my dad, and we all know how that ends.”
“Well if you ask me, I think it’s because you two are so similar.”
You gasp. “How dare you!”
Joyce laughs and the seriousness from the previous conversation dissipates. Bob finds a clean bowl and together you and him pour the fresh popcorn in as Joyce prepares the drinks. They’re having a movie night together, and you want to cry because of how adorable it all is. Joyce deserves this.
“You know you’re welcome to join us tonight, Y/N. It’s Will’s turn to choose the movie.” Joyce tells you, but you politely decline.
“Normally I’d love to, but I should get going. I have some homework and I promised Dustin I’d bake him some Halloween treats.”
“Oh!” Bob turns to you. “Speaking of, you promised you’d give me that recipe of yours!”
You and Joyce share an amused look. “You caught me, I did. I’ll write it down right now and you have to swear that no one else will look at this. Deal?”
Bob nods, ecstatic, and you grab a piece of paper and quickly scribble down all the ingredients he’ll need and how to make the cookies. Joyce watches fondly, and you fill with warmth having pleased her. When you’re done, you hand the paper over to Bob and make him cross his heart, just to be extra sure he won’t reveal all your secrets.
“Scout’s honor!”
“Very good then, soldier.” You salute him, and then pull Joyce into a hug. “I really gotta go now. Can you tell Jonathan I said goodbye?”
“Of course, bike home safe, alright?”
You wink at her. “Scout’s honor.”
Bob lets out a loud cackle and you can’t believe that this guy is real, but Joyce is laughing along with him and you’re pleased she’s found someone as endearing and kind as him.
As soon as you get home you throw down your backpack and bunker down at the kitchen table. Your mom isn’t back from work yet and Dustin seems to be off somewhere doing god knows what, so it’s just you and Mews for now.
Mews plops herself on the table next to an essay you’ve been working on and you scratch her head as you work. You get lost in your writing, humming softly to yourself, enjoying this small moment of peace.
You won’t admit this to Jonathan, but he’s right. You’ve been overworking yourself, your body aches and your eyes droop with exhaustion almost every day now. But keeping yourself busy is what’s helping you stay afloat. The more you pile onto yourself, the less time you have to think about Steve and his stupid smile and stupid hair and stupid face.
In the middle of one of your sentences, Dustin flings the front door open and scares you. “Jesus, dude!”
He doesn’t spare you a glance, but when he sees Mews on the table with you he suddenly looks a bit alarmed. “Mews is here?”
“Yeah…? She’s helping me with this english essay.” You respond, confused.
“Huh,” Dustin thinks for a second, but seems to shrug it off. “Anyways, I’m home.”
“I can see that.”
“Are you gonna ask about my day?”
“How was your day, my dear brother.”
Dustin hops onto the table and shimmies his shoulders. “I met a girl.”
“What?” You drop your pencil in shock and Mews scatters, your exclaim having frightened her.
“Don’t act too surprised, geesh.” Your brother rolls his eyes, but then he frowns. “Actually, technically speaking I haven’t met her yet, but–”
“You have a crush?” You’re in shock. In your eyes, Dustin is still a baby, no older than six years old. And yet here is he, thirteen and talking to you about a girl.
“Yes, Y/N. Her name is Max, she has red hair and is new, and she’s totally awesome.”
Red hair? You remember seeing that girl in the parking lot earlier today. “Was she with that weird new guy, the one with a mullet?”
Dustin nods, so you poke him in the stomach and ooh at him. “I saw her this morning, she was prettyyyy.”
He shoves your finger away and blushes, which you find adorable. Dustin’s first ever crush, you can’t believe how old he is now.
“Yeah, she’s pretty, but she’s also just awesome. I think she’s the one with the new high score on Dig Dug.”
“Dig Dug?”
Your brother scoffs. “The arcade game the party always plays? Honestly, do you not listen when I tell you about my days?”
“Alright, fine. If you can remember what I told you I did yesterday, then I’ll apologize for not listening better.”
Dustin closes his mouth, unable to recall a thing.
“Mhm, that’s what I thought.” You flick his hat. “Anyways, since you officially like girls now, I’ve been dying to give you some girl advice.”
“Y/N–” Dustin groans, but you shush him.
“First things first, always be a gentleman. Max does indeed seem cool, but I’m sure she’d appreciate a nice and polite young man like yourself.”
Dustin nods. “Okay, be kind. Got it.”
“Good. Now secondly, we Hendersons are charming people, so just be yourself.”
Duh,”
“Lastly, if she shows interest, tell her how you feel. Better you’re honest and true about how you feel rather than hide it and sulk.”
Dustin snorts. “Says you.”
You look away from him, slightly hurt. “I don’t know what you mean by that.”
“C’mon, Y/N. When are you gonna tell Jonathan you love him? I mean, everyone knows you do, it’s about time you confess.” Dustin drones on, unaware of your hurt feelings. “And he’s obviously in love with you, you guys are disgusting to be around–”
“He doesn’t love me back.” You whisper, looking down at your paper. You feel pathetic, confessing this to your little brother.
Dustin freezes, now realizing you’ve gone quiet. He can feel your mood darken and he feels like shit for not noticing it sooner. He’s upset you. “I’m sorry, Y/N. I thought he did, I mean the party and I all assumed…”
His words fade off, and you want to crawl into a hole and never come out. It’s embarrassing, you shouldn’t be pitied like this by your brother. “It’s okay, I know what you meant.”
“Y/N–”
You get up from the table and gather your things, shoving them into your backpack. “I’m gonna finish up this essay in my room, then I promise I’ll start baking those marshmallow puffs you like–”
Dustin jumps down from the table and blocks you from leaving the kitchen. “Jonathan is an ass–”
“Language–”
He doesn’t let you interrupt. “You’re cool, he’s stupid, and I’m here for you. Alright? Don’t make me pull a code blue on you.”
You wrap your brother into your arms, something he hadn’t been expecting, and allow yourself a small laugh. “No need for a code blue, I promise. Just, give me like an hour to sulk and then I’ll be as good as new. Okay?”
When you pull away, Dustin eyes you, but understands he won’t win this argument. The two of you handle your emotions the same way: alone, in solitude, away from prying eyes. He knows you just need some time to yourself, but he still feels like a jerk for upsetting you in the first place. “Fine, but if you’re sulking later I’ll flick your nose.”
You flick his nose and then quickly flee to your room, Dustin not far behind you. “Flicked you first!”
“Not fair!”
You slam your bedroom door and giggle as you lock it. Dustin bangs on the door, but you can hear the amusement in his voice. You tell him you’ll be out as soon as you’re done with your essay, and then go and sit down at your desk. Sighing, you dig into your bag and pull out what you need. Without meaning to, you look up and see your Spider-Man poster, your wonderful Christmas gift from Steve, hanging in front of you.
The small joy you’d been feeling vanishes.
The poster stares back at you, you can almost hear it calling you a pathetic coward, and you feel guilt claw at your throat. You close your eyes, remembering the cold from that winter day, and you can almost smell the cologne Steve had been wearing when you’d thrown yourself into his warmth. Sometimes, if you sit still enough, you think you can feel the ghost of his embrace.
You open your eyes.
Steve isn’t here.
Of course he isn’t here.
You exhale, feeling the familiar ache and exhaustion within you; junior year is looking quite grim.

You hadn’t expected to be riding a bike when you woke up, but here you were, standing on the street outside your house, Eddie offering up his bike to you.
A few days prior, Eddie and you had been hanging out, nothing special just laying around in his room, each of you talking about your day. Eddie told you about Mike complaining that his parents are forcing him to teach his little sister Holly how to ride a bike, and you mentioned that you had never learned. Eddie had expressed a little bit of surprise, but then you had moved on to a different topic. But apparently it stuck with him that you hadn’t learned how to ride a bike. So, when he showed up to your house, he dragged you outside and threw the back of his van open to reveal his old bike haphazardly tossed inside.
“First things first,” Eddie reached into his van and pulled out a black helmet with some old, worn-out band stickers on it, “gotta be safe.”
“Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bike?” You asked, already knowing the answer.
Eddie gently placed the helmet on your head and snapped the chin strap in place, “Do as I say, not as I do.”
You rolled your eyes at him playfully, “If I had a dollar for every time you’ve said that.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Eddie removed the bike from the back of the van and motioned for you take hold of the handlebars, “let me adjust the seat. You should be able to sit and have your feet flat on the ground.”
“Okay.” You waited for him to adjust the seat before testing it out.
“Is that good?”
“Yup.”
“Alright, so theses are the breaks,” Eddie moved your hands so they rested on the brakes attached to the handles, “you just squeeze and that will stop the bike. Don’t press too quickly unless you want to go flying off of the bike…but if that happens, that’s why you’re wearing a helmet.” Eddie patted the helmet on your head.
“I could go flying off the bike?!”
“No, you won’t, because you won’t press down on the brakes too fast, and because I’m right here and will dive to catch need be.”
His reassurance calmed you down, “Okay.”
“The pedals are how you make the bike move, and you use the handlebars to steer. Okay, that’s all the mechanics, or at least all that you need to know. You ready to start?”
You stared at Eddie with wide, nervous eyes, “You’re just going to send me off?”
“I’m gonna hold on to the bike while you get the hang of pedaling and breaking.” He said assured.
“You promise you won’t let go?”
Eddie chuckled at the genuinely worried look on your face, “I promise.”
You waited for Eddie to take hold of the bike, one hand on the handlebar and the other on the back of the seat. He gave you a nod and you moved your feet onto the pedals. You slowly began to move, only accidentally hitting the breaks a couple of times, but Eddie was there to make sure you didn’t go flying off of the bike.
“There you go, you’re doing great,” Eddie complimented, “remember to keep you eyes forward though. Don’t look at your feet or your hands.”
You nodded and looked up. A smile spread across your face as you continued to pedal forward. You were doing it. You were riding a bike! Granted Eddie was still holding onto you, but it was a triumph, nonetheless.
“Okay, good. Why don’t you try stopping?”
You slowly squeezed the breaks and came to a stop, “Was that good?”
“Perfect!” Eddie smiled at you, “Okay, now why don’t we turn around?”
Eddie guided you through turning the bike around, the first time you were a little shaky, but Eddie helped you. You rode back to your house and turned around and rode back down the street again. You repeated this a few more times until you felt confident in your steering abilities.
“Great! Do you want to try on your own now?”
You thought about it for a moment and then nodded, “Yes.”
“Okay, I’m gonna let go, but I’ll be right next to you the whole time, okay?”
Eddie's constant reassurance made you feel at ease, “Okay.”
Eddie let go of the bike and as promised, walked alongside you as you slowly made your way down the street. You did a few laps again, you lost your balance at one point, but Eddie was right there to catch you.
You pulled up next to Eddie’s van and came to a stop, “How’d I do?”
“You’re a natural.” Eddie smiled at you and took the helmet off your head.
“You think so?”
“Of course! I mean I wouldn’t recommend signing up for a cycling race or anything, but if some snot-nosed toddler challenges you, you’ve got it in the bag.”
“Ha-ha, you’re so funny,” you said dryly before switching to a more sincere tone, “thank you for doing this.”
He walked up to you, putting his hands on the handlebars, “Anytime,” he leaned forward and kissed you, “how about next week you teach me how to do something?”
“What did you have in mind?” The corner of your lip turned up in a smile.
He thought about it for a moment, his face scrunching up in a comical, almost cartoon like expression that made you chuckle, “You know, I’ve always thought being able to levitate would be cool.”
“Eddie, I can’t teach you something that goes against the laws of physics.”
“Could you teach me the laws of physics then?”
You laughed, “I can try my best.”
He smiled at you and kissed the top of your head, "Great."

NOVEMBER
“Okay, honey, gonna need you to ease up on the—shit that was a stop. Break!”
You pressed down on the break gently, forcing the car into a stop at the side of the road. Frowning over at your boyfriend. “Can you please stop nagging my driving?”
“Nagging? Baby, you missed that stop sign!”
Glancing over your shoulder, you look back to the sign. “I did not!” You grumbled, shifting back to look at the road. “I just did a California pause.”
Steve scoffed a bit, trying to stop the smile that wanted to creep its way in.“Yeah, well, that California pause is gonna get us an Indiana ticket.”
“I wish the two of you would settle on who’s actually driving.” Robin said softly from the backseat. A glance in the rearview mirror showed you a very nervous Robin who was currently covering her face with her hands.
“I am driving! Steve is shutting up now.” You said with a roll to your eyes. The house of the party was only a couple blocks away now and Steve’s worrisome attitude would soon be over.
To be fair, the two of them had been a little on edge tonight. It had taken nearly all afternoon to convince the both of them to come out with you tonight. Jason Carver was hosting a party during fall break and you needed a mindless distraction from all the school work you’ve been diving into lately.
Naturally, they had good reasons to be so reluctant about going.
Robin for the fact that most of the people there did not like her due to her status in band. And also because no one she’d actually like to talk with would be there.
As for Steve, well, he wasn’t too keen on the idea of going to a party at former teammate's house. After the events that happened your first year here, it was clear he was pushed out of the team’s good graces after his fallout with Tommy.
But after promising that you’d make sure they had a good time in your group's own fun way, they finally gave in.
“You know, I really don’t mind driving us.” Steve said softly, trying again to gain back some control.
Holding in a tired sigh, you reached over and placed your hand on his thigh. Squeezing at the limb tenderly. “Honey,” you said, stealing his own nickname for you. “Just relax, and let me take care of us okay? We’re almost there.”
A quick glance showed you Steve slightly taken back by your slight dominance.
“Why did I like that so much?..” he asked himself, but sat back anyway, resting his hand on top of yours. Robin peeking out from her hands let out a small laugh as she leaned closer towards the two of you.
“I thought by now you’d have convinced your old man to send over another car. Didn’t you complain the other day that he just got a new car for himself?”
The bitter memory of your phone call back home brought a sour look to your face. It was supposed to be a regular end of the week check in but it turned into their big recent purchases.
“He’s pissed I’ve ruined another car.” You pouted. “I tried to convince him it was because of the mall fire but he said since I didn’t pick a safe enough parking spot, it was on me. Which means I’m unfortunately carless once again.”
“Not completely,” Steve butt in, squeezing at your hand again. “I’m willing to pick you up and drop you off anywhere.”
“And me too, right, dingus?” Robin asked, looking over at her friend. Steve waved his other hand side to side. Acting like was debating whether or not to agree with her. She settled for slapping him upside the head lightly.
“I’m still debating on that,” he grumbled, rubbing the back of his head. “Trouble here though, should know she’s set for life on rides.”
“Rides that I’ll occasionally get to drive on?” You said playfully, watching as he laughed hesitantly with a small head shake.
 “Still debating that too.”
“It makes sense to take rides from Steve anyway.” Robin pointed out. “You two are together for most things anyway.”
You turned the wheel down the next block, not really sure on how you should reply.  But honesty always seemed to be the best way to go most of the time. “I’ll need to drive on my own eventually.” you shrugged. “Especially if things are different next year..”
The weight of those last words hit the car instantly and you tried not to physically wince at the small silence that followed after it.
“Right.” Steve said soon after, squeezing at your hands. Almost reassuringly. “It will be different..next year.”
Glancing to your right, you watched as he gave you a small smile before looking out the front window. “Stop!” he said suddenly, making you slam on the break a bit. The three of you jerked forward before falling back against the seat.
From the passenger rear view mirror, you could see a golden looking cat strutting away from the car.
“Well that guy came out of nowhere.” you said sheepishly watching as both of their heads turned to look at you incredulously. Nervously, you adjusted the top of your jacket, looking back to the road. “Anyway, Steve was distracting me. So now that he’s stopped we can finally get back to business.”
“Back to business?” Robin asked as she settled back into her seat again. “You mean you back to carelessly driving while Steve tries not to go into a panic attack?”
“Yes, but only to the second part.” Turning on the left hand signal, you checked over your shoulder to the road before setting back to the party. “I am getting us to this party, in one piece, and you two will enjoy yourselves and thank me later for having such a good time.”
You glanced quickly at Steve, raising a brow at him. “Right, Steve?” you asked, looking for a little back up. His mouth opened and closed a couple of times before he finally nodded his head. Absently giving you a thumbs up as he glanced at the road.
 “Yeah, exactly.”
“Sure,” Robin agreed. “We’ll have a good time. If we don’t die on the way there.”
You ignore the jab and keep on with your positivity. “Again, in one piece and a good time!”
Steve thankfully sensing your slight distress held onto your hand. Rubbing at the back with his thumb. “Ease up, Buckley. Trouble’s right. Plus we’re not even that far from the place anyway.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure.” Robin waved off. “But if I could just say one more thing then I’ll keep quiet back here.”
“What is it?” You asked tiredly.
“You just missed our right turn.”
 “..Fuck.”
Tumblr media
Things thankfully did turn around the minute you guys entered inside the house.
Robin was first to set off in a different direction when she caught sight of an old friend from band that had graduated previously. Leaving you and Steve to mingle your way through the crowd of kids. Surprisingly, there were a couple of old faces that seemed to be pleased to see their former classmate again.
“So wait, the two of you were actually in the mall that night?” asked Anna Jacobi. Her Purdue sweater had a distracting splotch of beer on the front of it that kept catching your eyes.
“We were.” Steve answered casually, trying to downplay the actual events of the night. “It was pretty crazy. Things got pretty hectic after we got our friends out. Didn’t even have the chance to really see all the damage that had gone on.”
“I heard you guys had to be checked out by paramedics.” Said her date Mark Sutton next. “Did anyone get hurt?”
“Well, we inhaled a lot of smoke and fell a couple of times trying to get up the broken escalator. Some of us had to get patched up.” You waved off, trying not to think about the ‘simple’ patch work like El’s leg, Jonathan’s face, and almost the entirety of Steve’s body.
“I swore I saw Harrington with a shiner for like a week afterwards.” Said someone from the back, making you think you almost slipped up on that last part of your thoughts.
Instinctively, you turned your body closer to Steve’s. Almost attempting to shield him from their line of curious questions. To this day the sight of his bruised and battered body still haunted you. Reminding you that had it not been for Dustin or Erica, the three of you would have faced a lot worse than truth serum.
“Some guard inhaled too much smoke. Then attacked Steve when he thought he was trying to keep him inside.”
From the side you could see Steve gave you a small curious look while the group murmured in astonishment.
“I’m sure the guy won if he was up against Harrington.”
All of you snapped your head towards the source of the voice. Standing in his Indiana State sweater was Tommy Hagan. His legs wobbled a bit as he pushed his way through the small group of people around you guys. A clear sign of how inebriated he was.
“Tommy,” Steve said dryly. “You’re here.”
“Yeah,” he scoffed, crossing his arms. “Seeing as I was actually invited and not someone’s plus one.” he smirked as he perched at the edge of the armrest, giving him the chance to look down at you two.
“Speaking of being invited. I don’t remember inviting you over for this conversation. Why don’t you go do something useful like bothering someone else? Or going to take a swim with a slab of concrete?” you said simply, giving Tommy a glare. It’s been months since either one of you have had to put up with him and you weren’t too keen on that changing now.
His smile faltered a bit before he shook it off to smirk at you. “Lovely as ever, Henderson. I’m actually surprised to find you here. With Stevie boy of all people. Would have thought you were done playing guard dog to freaks when he graduated.” he finished, bringing his can of beer up to his lips.
The comment struck a nerve with Steve. He nearly shot up from his seat but seemed to hold back from giving Tommy the full reaction he was looking for. From his side you could see his hand clench up in a fist while the other wrapped around you pulled you in closer.
“Is there any reason why you’re here, Tommy?” Steve asked, not leaving room to humor his inquiries. “Or was bothering us part of your list of things to do tonight?”
The group around you guys slowly seemed to catch onto the animosity, pulling away a bit from the three of you, but not enough so that they’d miss out on the conversation.
“Ooh,” he cooed, smirking down at Steve. “Can’t a guy catch up with his old school chums?”
He looked around the room, trying to get someone to smile at him. “I just want to make my visit back home fun before I head back to school.” He turned back to the two of you, giving a sardonic smile. “That’s something Stevie boy will never have to worry about. He’ll always be here. Stuck in Hawkins, waiting to catch up with us.”
Steve’s face hardened. You started to see red.
“Wow, Tommy, after all this time you’re still so obsessed with what Steve is doing.” Getting up from the couch, you sized him up for a moment as you stood with your hands on your hips. You made sure to throw in a bright smile. “I would have figured you stopped keeping tabs on him a long time ago. Then again, I guess you must be bored and bitter now since Carol dumped you on her way to OSU.”
Finally the smile dropped from Tommy’s face as a scowl took over.
“Listen bitch,” he muttered, pointing a finger at you. “I don’t think you of all people here have room to talk about being dumped. Didn’t you get dumped by Billy after you wrecked his ca–”
The cup of beer is taken out of your hand quickly and thrown into Tommy’s face before you could even react. Steve was up now, moving you to stand behind him as he stepped up to Tommy. “Watch your mouth, asshole.”
“Wow,” he chuckled, wiping his face of any liquid. “Still got some fire in you, I see.” Standing up now, he adjusted his sweater before looking Steve in the eyes. “Why don’t you and I take this outside and settle things once and for all? That is unless you’ve gotten shittier since your fight with Byers..and Hargrove..and I guess we should count the mall security now.”
 “Fuck you.” Steve grunted.
The two looked like they were about to start fighting then and there when the sound of a hollering noise came up from behind them.
“Tommy! I’m so glad you made it, man!”
Jason Carver, the party host, pushed his way through the small audience that had formed around you guys to make his way and hug Tommy. He quickly realized the boy had been soaked up in beer and frowned at his shirt before looking between both boys. “Is everything cool here?” He looked more concerned about Tommy than the overall situation.
“Yeah,we’re cool” Steve said calmly, not giving room for the other boy to clue Jason in. “Tommy might need some help keeping dry, though.”
Turning around, he gently placed his hand into yours.
“Come on, let’s get some air.”
Without looking back, he led you out of the living room and out the back door of the house. The backyard was just as busy with buzzing kids, but at least had cool crisp air to give you guys some breathing room to relax from the tense moment.
It wasn’t until you were towards the back gate of the house that Steve let go to lean against the wood wall. Letting out a tired sigh while he kept his gaze down at the floor.
“Are you okay?” you asked softly.
 “No…I’m not okay.”
“Please don’t be upset.” Reaching out, you cupped the sides of his cheeks and tried to get him to look at you. “Tommy’s an asshole. He’s just trying to get a rise out of you. Out of both of us.”
“He’s right though..I’m still here. Stuck.”
You shook your head quickly, needing to get some sense into your boyfriend. “You’re not stuck here. Just because this asshole puts it like that doesn’t mean shit. He doesn’t know anything you’ve been through the past two yea–”
“Wasn’t it you just a few years ago, who told me I’d be nothing but the boy who used to be relevant?”
Hearing your words brought up felt like a bucket of ice water thrown to your face. Surprisingly, it stung more than you thought it would. At the time the words made sense, you wanted Steve to hurt as badly as you did.
 But things changed, he changed.
“Yeah, I said that. And I was wrong. Okay? I was wrong and a liar because at the end of the day I did like you. I liked you so much that I had to physically keep myself away from you.”
The very idea of Steve thinking so far back to what you said and it possibly being something that continued to hurt him made your stomach twist up.
“So yeah, you’re not in tech, or state, or wherever. But you’re here with me, and you’re my favorite person in all this stupid world. Who does stuff like sticking up for me when you know I can handle angry customers, or letting me drive your precious car to lame parties, or giving me crazy hot sex at the office at work that I still think about sometimes.”
Sighing, you make a point to take a step back from him. Giving him a small sad smile. “I said a lot of awful shit to you in the past..I’m sorry. I’d never say anything about the guy standing before me now. And you shouldn’t give two craps about your jealous ex best friend or anything he says. But I guess that’s just what I think.”
Feeling a little frustrated, you make a move to step off towards the gate door when you’re pulled back gently.
Steve wrapped one arm around your lower back while the other cupped at your cheek. “I’m sorry,” he sighed, resting his forehead against yours. “I shouldn’t have brought that up. That was another time for us. I just.. I just can’t get his words out of my head. If Tommy Hagan of all people is doing better off than me–”
“Tommy Hagan is currently throwing up on Jason’s couch,” said a voice suddenly.
Staggering from the side of the house was Robin. In her hands was a stolen bag of chips and an unopened six pack of beers. “I highly doubt he’s doing better than you right now.” she smirked as she came over.
The two of you pull apart, but keep each other’s hands linked together. Steve is still down, looking only at your hands while he sniffed to himself. You glanced over at Robin who gave you a small nod, seeming to already know what’s happened from inside the party. It brought back the twisting feeling in your gut when you remembered how much of a better mood he was earlier that day.
“This party blows.” you said nodding over to Robin. “Wanna go drink and watch scary movies?”
“I know a place where we can grab a quick flick.” Robin smiled, seeming to like the change of plans. She moved over to Steve’s side, nudging him in the shoulder lightly. “Waddya say, dingus? Wanna get buzzed and watch some masked guy chase a hottie?”
He picked his head up at that, giving Robin a slight pout before he turned to look at you. Leaning in, you gave a small kiss to the corner of his lips in effort to make him smile. “That is if you’re up for it.”
The two of you keep your focus on Steve, leaning in comically enough that he has to hold up his hands to push both away lightly.  “Fine,” he said, a smile cracking through his lips. “But I get to pick the movie.”
It’s weird to be ditching a party so early. This wouldn’t have happened last year. But something about leaving to go enjoy the rest of the night with Robin, Steve, and a cheesy horror movie felt right. And as the three of you made your way over to Steve’s car, you hope that he felt the same way.

  DECEMBER
It was early one Saturday morning when the sound of a boy’s boisterous laugh woke you up. A dangerous move on the stranger’s part considering you were still in your beauty.
Grabbing onto your robe, you emerged out of your room. Brushing off the early sleep from your eyes to find the source of the noise pollution. Dustin, who didn’t have anyone over as far as you know, was standing in the living room surrounded by a small group of boys you recognized from school.
“Who’s the guy who can’t control the volume of his voice?” you muttered, giving the group a small glare.
Two boys in matching shirts jumped in place, not seeing you behind them. A third boy, who looked like he had seen a ghost, spat out the water he had been drinking. “D-Dustin,” he stuttered, shakily pointing over at you. “You didn’t tell us a girl lived here.”
“Girl?” Dustin snorted as he piled in books and snacks into his backpack. “You mean Medusa? Could’ve sworn that she was a Gorgon.”
“Oh you’re so funny!” You said, faking a hard laugh. “Wanna know what else is gonna be funny? Aunt Claudia’s face when I tell her it was you and your little troop of dungeoneers who dragged dirt onto her clean carpet.”
Dustin scoffed at the threat, getting up from the floor to cross his arms at you. “Please. There’s barely anything.”
“There is something, right here.” you insisted.
He huffed a bit before he joined you at your side. Peering down at the floor. You waited until he was distracted enough before putting him in a chokehold. Instantly he fought back, trying to get out of your vice like grip. The two of you ignored the anxious other boys as you struggled against each other.
“Let me go!” Dustin cried out, slapping at your arms.
“Say you’re sorry for the Medusa comment or else your ass is grass!” you hissed, pinching at his sides. It only caused the boy to become more erratic. Flailing in your arms until he was able to release himself out of your hold. He quickly stepped back and held up his hands defensively.
“If you tell my Mom about any of this, I’ll let slip about seeing Steve’s little morning exit from your window last Sunday!” he yelled back.
You let out a loud gasp. Shocked that he not only knew about last week’s rendezvous, but was brave enough to use as a threat against you. At any other time you’d be pretty impressed about it. But since he was doing it in front of his little friends, you could only scowl at your cousin.
“You little shit!” you growled, moving over to begin slapping at him. He instantly fought back, slapping at your hands and arms while leaning his face as far back from your assault. The other guys in the room are slightly gaping at the childish fight in front of them. It isn’t until Mike Wheeler came barreling through the front door that you two stopped.
“Sorry!” Mike apologized, panting out huffs of air. “We had to drop Holly off at her friend's house before my Mom could get me here. I’m ready to go.”
Dustin made sure to jump around you in order to get around the room to his bag again. The only thing you did was grumble as you made your way back towards the kitchen to get something to drink.
Thankfully the other boys followed Mike back out the door, calling out how they’re all ready to go while Dustin made his way over to you. His face was red from the one slap you got in on him, but he looked more sheepish than angry.
“Look, sorry about the comment..please don’t tell Mom about today? She’d only freak out.”
You crossed your arms over your chest, wanting to take the petty route for this. But considering he still had something to hold over you, you settled with nodding your head. “So long as you don’t bring up last Sunday. EVER.”
“Deal.” he laughed, adjusting the strap of his bag on his shoulder. “Wouldn’t do me any good anyway.”
 “Why do you say that?”
“Because if she grounds you from seeing Steve, then that means I don’t get to see him either.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at that, nodding your head again before waving him off. He turned around and made his way towards the door to join his friends outside. But not without throwing one more bit of information over his shoulder.
“You’ve got mail by the way. Something from California!” he called out before closing it up behind him. You rush over to the kitchen table and find an envelope with your name on it. The address you had memorized by now looked up at you tauntingly.
“California. Seems important.” Said a voice from behind you. Eddie, who was coming out of the bathroom apparently, sauntered over to your side. Peering down at the envelope.
“This is important, Ed.” You mumbled, ignoring the fact that he was inside your house. The nerves of what the letter could say inside was far too distracting at this point.
“What’s so special about this Stanford? It’s just some cushy college, right?”
You sighed softly, checking the weight of the envelope as if that were enough to give you any indication of what could be written inside. “It’s a law school, Eddie. It’s the law school that my family and I have been anticipating for since I was a kid.”
“Wait,” he said, leaning in carefully. “Just how important are these results to you?”
“Like my whole future sort of relies on this saying I’m accepted.”
He whistled at that, crossing his arms as he looked at the paper suspiciously. “You think I should bring the boys back in and do a prayer circle or something?”
You looked over him weirdly before chuckling at how serious he actually was. “As sweet as that is, I think I can settle with you just keeping me company.”
Flipping the envelope over, you carefully tore off the tip of the paper. Getting the glued tab to come off cleanly before freeing up the contents inside. It was a minute of silence as you scanned your eyes over the page.
 “Holy shit.” you whispered.
“Congratulations! You have been admitted to the Stanford Class of 1990!” Eddie read out before he looked back at you. “That’s good, right?” You didn’t speak as you slowly faced him. Shocked to have the words read aloud for you.
“I’ve been accepted to Stanford University.” you said finally.
“You’ve been accepted.” he confirmed slowly. “Woo?”
Finally the excitement took over and you let out a happy scream. Jumping up and down gleefully. Eddie caught on with your happiness and let out a little laugh as he clapped his hands.
With how happy you felt inside, you didn’t even stop to think about sharing some of the joy you had and threw your arms around Eddie.
He huffed a bit from the air being pushed out of him before gingerly hugging back. “Way to go, Princess.” he said into your ear. Sounding genuinely happy. You can’t help but let out a small cheerful laugh and press a kiss to his cheek.
Pulling back, you’re about to thank Eddie for the moral support when the phone suddenly rang. Dashing into the kitchen, you pick up the landline and bring the phone up to your ear.
“Tell me you got yours!” said Nancy on the other line.
“I just opened it! What did yours say?”
 “I GOT IN!”
“ME TOO!” you cried out, making the other girl on the line scream out.
Eddie was still standing by the table, hand over his cheek as he stared down at the letter. From outside you could hear Dustin call out his name. Nancy on the other end calls to your attention too. Making you and Eddie only have a brief moment where you both make eye contact.
“Thanks.” you mouthed, feeling a little bad about ditching him for the phone call.  He didn't say anything but smiled and waved goodbye. Casually stealing one more glance as he made his way out the door.
You find yourself still smiling even after he leaves.

 LATER THAT WEEK
“Steve if you don’t get your hands off of me..”
“I’m helping keep you steady.” he chuckled from beneath you.
You were currently at the top of the ladder above the romance section. Attempting to use a pin and string to hang up the mistletoe you bought off a Christmas tree lot yesterday morning. Steve had just clocked in five minutes ago before he made his way over to you. Letting his roaming hands go around the sides of your hips while you were distracted.
 “You’re actually tickling me.”
He snorted at that before moving around so he could stand at the other side of the ladder, holding onto the sides to keep it in place better. You quickly pushed the pin into the roof of the store, holding a hand beneath it to catch the object. When it didn’t fall you stepped down, smiling up at the sight.
Not missing the chance, Steve stepped forward just a bit so that he stood right beneath it. “Looks like we’re under the mistletoe.” he hummed, moving to wrap an arm around your back.
“Would you look at that?” you laughed, pretending to be shocked. “It seems we are.”
He smirked down at you before reaching up with his other hand to use the tip of your chin to angle you up to him. Bringing you in close enough so that your lips could meet in the middle. It was a sweet, simple kiss that still took your breath away by the time he pulled back.
“Missed ya today.” he said softly, looking at you with such a warmth that it has you feeling flushed all over.
“I missed you too. Did you enjoy the morning off?” you asked, biting your lip in an attempt to control the grin that wanted to plaster all over your face. It was hard to keep your cool composure around him sometimes.
He shrugged a bit, bringing a hand up to casually pull at your bottom lip. Caressing at the plump tender skin before he leaned in to quickly sneak in another peck. “Got to take care of a few things. Including stocking up for our little weekend.”
The two of you recently planned for a private little getaway the moment you both found out you had the weekend off. It took some convincing and switching for Robin, plus some shifts covered to make Keith happy. But you guys managed to get away with it.
“Oh?” you hummed, blinking a little bit. You were still a bit stunned from his little bits of affection.  “Someone’s excited. I guess I should say thank you for taking care of everything.”
“I think I know a way you can thank me.” Steve said, sounding a little too excited. “I believe last month you showed me a pretty good way to thank me.”
Laughing, you rolled your eyes and stepped away from Steve and his workplace temptations again in order to put away the ladder. “As much as I’d love to entertain that idea, I switched shifts with Robin. I have a test I need to study for.”
“What?” he pouted. “You didn’t have to switch her, I could have helped you with that!”
Again you can’t help but laugh. “As much as I’m sure you mean that, I know your method of studying..not exactly the type of thing I need for History.”
He followed after you, grabbing the ladder quickly to help put it away in the stock room in the back. You waited until he was done setting it against the wall before draping your arms around his neck, pulling him close now that you guys had some privacy.
“Now if it was Chemistry..that’d be a whole other thing.” you smirked watching as his pout slowly turned into a smile. “Tonight the store gets a break from our sexual escapades, this weekend however, will not.” You curled your fingers into the back ends of his hair, giving it a light tug as you looked up at him. “I’ll be all yours for forty-eight hours.”
Steve grunted a bit at the tugging, pressing himself close to your front while he rubbed his hands around the sides of your waist affectionately. “All mine?” he mused softly. “Just for the weekend?”
“Well no, I’m always yours. But this weekend will be..extra special.”
That piqued his interest even more. Making his eyes turn dark as he leaned his face down to your neck. “Define special.” he purred, letting his breath fan against your skin before he brought his lips close to yours.
Laughing a bit at his unbothered public flirting, you gave in to his tempting looks and gave him a kiss quickly before your mind thought about the letter in the back of your jeans. You were still debating on whether to share this news with Steve now or later on. Unsure if you could hold back the exciting secret anymore.
 “So there was this letter–”
 “There she is!”
The sudden waving over from the front counter quickly distracted you. Making you pull back from Steve enough to peek out and see Eddie over at the front. Raising a brow, you stepped over towards him, giving him a small smile as you moved to stand beside him.
“What are you doing here, Eddie?”
“Well, I was actually here to check out Sleepaway Camp.” he said, patting the tape on the counter. “But, it turns out I owe you guys money that I already paid.”
Robin, who was looking at Eddie curiously nodded her head in agreement. “There’s a three day late fee, dude. The system says it was returned but never paid for.” she said pointing to the screen. Steve came to join her at the register, frowning over at Eddie briefly before he looked at the screen himself.
“You owe us for Dune.” he said curtly, crossing his arms. “It’s a three dollar late fee.”
Momentarily, you ignore your boyfriend’s uncalled for attitude in order to sort out some of the mess your new friend had gotten himself into. “Geez Ed, you do know this is only for rent, right?”
Eddie looked over to you slightly exasperated before he leaned in.“Dune turned out to be a lot harder to watch than I thought. But it was only late by a day.” he said softly. “Think you can help me out with your friends?”
“You know we can hear you, right?” Robin asked, becoming less amused by the boy. Steve on the other hand looked a little more on the angrier side.
Holding a hand up, you lean over the counter and look at the screen carefully. “What day did you come in to return it?”
“Uhh, Monday. Night time. Probably when you guys were closing.”
You quickly thought back to earlier this week. That night had been slow, and it took you nearly an hour to convince Keith to let you off early to get an extra bit of time with Steve before he had to drive you home.
“Keith.” you said simply. “He was the only one here that night and we all know what he’s like the last hour here.” Steve pursed his lips, ready to rebut that but you raised a brow at him. “This mess wouldn’t have happened if I had been here. But seeing as I had plans..I wasn’t.”
That seemed to shut him up but didn’t quite take away the frown from his face.
Robin clicked the mouse over the screen, deleting the charge before shrugging her shoulders to Steve. “Keith does hate checking movies back in. He probably waited for one of us to do it the next day and forgot about the charge.”
Steve looked over the three of you with a small glare before shaking his head, moving to restack the pile of tapes over by the return counter. “Whatever, I guess.”
Pushing the tape towards Robin, you turned to face Eddie. Pointing a finger sternly at him. “This is the last time I will help you with a late fee problem. Next time bring your movie on time, whether you understand it or not.”
“Yes, ma’am.” he chuckled, giving Robin the money for his new rental. “Gotta say, if that’s how you work as a defense lawyer before Law school, then I can’t wait to see you after. Might have to find a way to contact you in California.”
 “California?” Steve asked quickly.
You couldn’t help but freeze into place. Silently cursing Eddie for spilling the secret about your recent plans in front of Steve without you getting the chance to. “Uh,” you laughed nervously. “California..it’s where I’ll be starting school next year.”
“Wait, when did this happen?” asked Steve as he came around the counter to go over to your side. “You got into a school in California?”
“Pfft,” Eddie snorted, grabbing his tape from the counter. “She didn’t get into just any California school. She got into Stanford.”
Robin gasped softly, looking over astonished before she clapped. “Holy shit, Henderson. You got in?!”
Steve beside you is slightly taken back. Brown eyes shifting between looking between you and Eddie. Was he happy, worried, mad? For once your boyfriend seemed to be completely unreadable to you.
“I just found out the other day.” you explained looking between the group.
Eddie nudged his elbow gently into your arm, giving you a small smirk. “Hell yeah you did. And because of that bit of news, I know just the person to help me out with my many upcoming parking tickets.” he teased, throwing a quick wink. “Catch you later, big shot.”
The three of you quietly watched as Eddie left the store. For a moment there was a bit of awkward silence before Robin cleared her throat, causing your eyes to return over to her. She looked a bit worried at Steve but quickly shot you a wide grin.
“Congratulations, kid. All that law nonsense you’re always bringing up is finally gonna come in handy.”
Despite the teasing in her tone, her smile is genuine. Making you feel a little at ease about how awkward it seemed to be.
“Thanks, Robin.” you laughed a little bit before turning to Steve.
He was looking at you with such a forlorn look before he blinked into realization. “C’mere.” he whispered, pulling you into a tight hug. “I’m so proud of you, honey.”
The warmth and love behind the hug is so genuine that you can’t help but melt into his arms. Feeling Steve press a kiss to the side of your head. But even with the affection, you can’t help but still feel like something was off.
“Is everything okay? You looked a little sick a second ago..”
He let out a small huff of amusement before leaning forward to kiss at your forehead. “I am, I promise. This is just..this is big news.”
Reaching into your pocket, you pulled out the acceptance letter, opening it up for Steve to have a look at.
Carefully, he took the paper into his hands and scanned his eyes over the page. A small smile tugging at his face before he glanced up at you. “This is amazing but..how come you were keeping this a secret? This is good news.”
“It wasn’t supposed to be.” you said honestly. “I was going to tell you this weekend as a surprise but Eddie’s mouth is too fast for his brain to catch up and he gave it away.”
“How did Eddie know anyway?” he asked, slightly hesitant. Robin, who was still watching the awkward scene play out, waved the two of you off and went to the back to distract herself with work. Leaving the two of you alone.
“He was picking up Dustin the other day for some sort of game night and saw me with the letter. It was only by chance that he found out first.”
Steve looked a little bit unsure of your answer, but didn’t seem to go against it. Only giving you back the letter. For a moment you’re worried that he might still be upset about things, but he quickly turned to make things back to how it was before. Wrapping an arm around your waist as he pulled you closer.
“So I’m guessing the letter was that extra special thing you were mentioning earlier.”
Happy to have him back in a playful mood again, you can’t help but grin up at him. Despite wanting to play cool and coy. “Yes..and no.” you hummed, pressing your hand to rest against the front of his chest. The beat of his heart was thumping heavy through his shirt. “The actual special bit is the fact that a certain set of clothes I found in Vanity Fair last month arrived in the mail for me today.”
“Clothes?” he asked, face scrunching up in confusion. “What’s so special about clothes?”
Tracing your hand from his chest up to the side of his neck, you watch as his throat bobbed a bit. “Well for starters they’re in red. Your favorite color.”
 “Red is nice.”
 “Yeah, so is lace.”
His eyes widened at the reveal and you felt a big surge of pride in knowing that Steve was already enthralled with the outfit without having seen you in it yet. But his shock quickly turned back into a frown, making you worried he might be upset again.
“That’s not good.” he said with a shake to his head.
 “What’s wrong?”
“We’re gonna need a lot more than forty-eight hours now if I’m gonna see you walking around in lace.”
Now it’s your turn to stare at him with a stunned look. But with the sound of Robin calling out to Steve, there’s no time  for you to even think of a response to that. Meanwhile Steve has completely soaked in the sight of you taken back for once, giving you a kiss to your cheek before he patted your behind.
“Duty calls, Trouble.” he winked, giving you one last look over. “I’ll call you later.”
And just like that you’re left at the counter, both excited and anxious for the weekend to come.

 TWO DAYS LATER
There were a couple of things you learned since the start of the getaway weekend. The first thing was the fact that you and Steve were doomed to either order take out the rest of your lives, or sign up for cooking classes.
The second was that Steve Harrington really loved red lace.
 “Fuck, I’m so close.”
The two of you had been going at this all night. Taking breaks from eating, talking, and watching tv in order to make out or mess around. Despite the fact that you two had a very healthy sex life for two working teens, you both took every opportunity that this weekend could bring.
“Me too.” you whimpered, rolling your hips again. Steve had you on his lap by the fireplace. Letting the heat of the fire keep your bare skin warm since the only thing left of the lace was the bra you managed to keep on.
The palm of his hands gripped tightly to your hips, helping you keep the rhythm that was getting the both of you closer to your third climax of the night. At this point the way you two were going it was like you were trying to start a new record.
“God, you’re beautiful.” Steve grunted, trying hard not to grip tightly to the soft skin of your hips. His eyes were looking everywhere from your face down to your bouncing breasts. You couldn’t help but feel a heat go over your face.
Leaning close, you pressed your lips against his. Trying to capture his heavy breath so that you could soak him in completely. But at the same time he’s thrusting upward to keep up with you and his cock is hitting at just the right spot. Making you throw your head back in a gasp.
Steve wrapped you in his strong arms. Making sure to maintain the deep thrusts and keep you situated on his lap. Your hands reached out to grip against his shoulders. Sharp nails slightly digging into his skin when he thrusted into the right spot again. It caused him to grunt softly, face scrunching up in concentration.
He relentlessly slammed into you next, giving his everything into your pussy as he repeatedly bucked his hips up. Beads of sweat started to fall down the side of his face and you paused your bouncing to brush back the sweaty hair from his face. “Your perfect pussy is gripping on me so tight,” he growled. “I’m gonna lose it.”
His dirty words affect you like usual, making you not only moan, but squirm even more in his hold. “Please, baby. I’m almost there.” you whined, rolling your hips a bit. There’s a good amount of arousal that’s slicked up between you and Steve can’t help but smirk down at the sight before he glanced at you again.
“Don’t worry, honey. I’m gonna make you feel real good again.”
With one hand still around your waist, keeping your body pressed to his, he used the other to cup at the side of your neck. Keeping you perfectly still to drill into you in a brutally fast sequence. One thrust, two, three, and with one hard final push, he’s hitting the right spot that has you seeing white spots.
Your weak body collapsed fully on top of him, falling into the ecstasy like bliss it always does while Steve rode out his orgasm. Between you two, the remnants of his orgasm started to slowly seep out, coating the upper part of your thighs.
“So good.” you murmured into his skin. Lips lazily peppering his neck with kisses. He pressed his lips to your forehead, gently stopping his thrusting so that the two of you could slowly fall backwards into the pile of pillows on the floor.
It wasn’t until a second later that the two of you pulled apart completely. Falling on your backs as you tried to gasp back some air into your lungs. But with the fire beside you still alive and spreading its warmth into the room, you couldn’t quite cool off right away.
But that didn’t matter, not when Steve was pressing loving kisses over your neck and shoulders as he came down from his high. He was murmuring sweet words into your skin, almost silently to himself before he settled for resting his face against your shoulder. Close to your side.
It’s a peaceful, intimate kind of cuddling. Something you guys don’t get to have often since most of the time you’re having sex in the heat of the moment or some place you aren’t supposed to. But this was different. This was almost like playing make believe that you lived this kind of way.
“Your thinking face is on.” Steve said softly, pulling you out of your thoughts. His hand was gently running up and down the side of your arm as he looked over at you. “Mind sharing with me?”
“It’s nothing.” you sighed, trying to avert your gaze down. The curls on his chest were slightly slick from the heat of everything. “Just admiring the day we got to have.”
“Oh,” he chuckled. “So you’re thinking about it too?”
For some reason that has you turning shy, hiding your face away from his knowing eyes and hiding in the crook of his neck. The skin there smelled like his cologne and something musky, making you take a deep inhale before you placed a kiss there.
“I think I could live everyday like this.”
“What? Burnt steaks and sex every night by the fireside?” you asked, pulling away to gage his reaction. He looked very pleased with the question, nodding his head quickly.
“Who the hell wouldn’t?” he said as a matter of fact. The palm of his hand wandered from your side down to your bare backside. “Do you think they have that lace in more colors?” he said a second later, cupping at the cheek of your ass
“Steve!” you chided, trying to hold in a laugh. But too quickly is that failing and he’s dragging you back close. Letting his lips land on yours while he kneaded at your behind. You melt into the moment, letting yourself give into Steve completely.
“We can have that you know.” you said against his lips. He hummed in question, not pulling back from you so that he could continue the grazing over your skin. “Live like this every day.”
“I know,” he agreed. “Someday right?”
While he was right about that, there was something you had in mind. It came to you the day before when you were packing for the weekend. A small spark of an idea really. No matter what you did throughout the day, the idea of sharing an apartment in the bright sunny California with Steve kept bringing a smile to your face.
“Well, it could be someday..or it could be next fall?”
He pulled away confused before you sat up to look down on him. If there was anyone that you’d want to share a room with, a home with, a life with; it was Steve.
“Stanford starts early next fall. And my parents want  me to live off campus so I can have a better place to stay. Meaning that I’d probably get an apartment close by. But it’d be just me alone in a new place with no friends..no you.”
“Right.” he said slowly, not exactly sounding like he understood where you were going with this
“But, if we work things out early..it doesn’t have to be that way.” He still looked up at you perplexed with unsurety in his gaze. You take it as a sign just to be straightforward with this now.
“Do you think maybe you’d come with me and live together?”
His brows furrowed together, lips pouting as he took in your formal words finally. “Live together? Like together? In California?”
“Yes, like us in a place back home.”
“I thought that you’d want something long distance.” he asked, eyes shifting.
“What, you expected the two of us to just be together almost three thousand miles apart in a completely different timezone?”
“Wait, you actually did the math?”
  “Steve..”
He held his hands up defensively, licking his lips as he nervously stuttered out his next words. “Baby, look, I don’t think I can just leave home. I-I can’t just uproot my whole life for..” he cut himself off, frowning over his own words before he looked at you nervously.
It’s safe to say the words still hurt you to your core without being said. Enough to almost make you physically flinch inside. But the part of you that tries to hide, aka the venomous bitch, is festering off this conversation.
For the first time in a while, you let her out a bit. “Finish it.” you said sternly. “Finish the sentence.”
Steve quickly shook his head, not wanting to steer anywhere near that kind of talk. “No, no, honey. You know I didn’t mean it like that.” he pleaded, trying to reach for you. But you already reeled yourself back, getting some space as you felt the anger heat up your face.
“Say the rest of the damn sentence, Steve. Say how you don’t think I’m worth changing your life for.”
He moved to sitting up now. Looking at you the most serious since he’s been in a while. “I’m not gonna finish it because I don’t believe that. You’re one of the few people in my life that’s helped me for the better. I just meant that I didn’t want to uproot my life for nothing. I need to do something in order to do that.”
“Starting a life with me is nothing?”
He sputtered a bit. Trying to say multiple rebuttals to that at once. “Don’t twist my words!”
“Then what is it you’re trying to say, Steve? Because as far as I know you’re not doing anything here but working at family video.” Looking at your hands you try to control the word vomit coming out but the pain in your chest is making that hard to do. “You’re still on this weird sabbatical since you didn’t make it into tech. And FYI, you could do something in California. There’s tech schools, community colleges, christ, even video rental stores. Why can’t you just do that over there where you can be with me?”
“What, like some love sick boy following around his girlfriend while she’s off becoming a lawyer and he’s stuck renting tapes out to jerk offs?” Steve scoffed lightly, not really pleased with your suggestion.
“No, like a man who wants to be with the supposed woman he’s in love with. Or did that mindset only have a lifespan of one school year?”
“Stop..stop acting like it’s just that. You know it wouldn’t be an easy change! Not to mention there’s other factors.”
 “Like what?”
“Like the fact that I have other people in my life that are important too. Not just you!”
You look over at him shocked. Mind instantly scrambling to put together if you had even insinuated that at all in the conversation. “I never said there wasn’t.” you frowned, wondering where this conversation was going to. “You mean the world to Dustin and I know Robin is your best friend. But..I wouldn’t expect Jonathan to stick around just to wait around for me. I’d..I’d want him to venture out and find something good for him.”
“I want that for you too. Okay? I want you to have all that..”
“And what about you? Why don’t you want that for yourself, Steve?” You almost reached out to shake him. Wanting to make him see that this move would be so much more than just moving in with you. It’d be a whole new world, a whole new life that you believed the two of you deserved.
 Why wasn’t he getting that?
“What I want and what I need are different things. I need to stay and check on my friends and make sure they’re safe in this hell hole. What I want is..you.” He reached up and gripped at your hand, bringing it down to press against his chest. The beat of his heart was fast beneath the tips of your fingers. Whatever he was feeling, it was enough to make his heart panic. “All I’ve ever wanted is you because I love you..”
“Just not enough to come with me..”
His mouth slacked a bit and he quickly shook his head. Seemingly stumped by your words. You sniffled a bit, holding back the tears you felt pinching at your eyes. Quickly, you pulled away from his hold. Reaching over for the robe you had been wearing earlier and slipping it on before you got up from the floor. “I think I should go home.” you said softly, averting your eyes.
“No. Wait, please.” Steve said, quickly reaching for his sweats. “You can’t just leave. Besides, it's snowing. You don’t have a car and could get hurt.”
“I’ll risk it.” You said bitterly, making your way up to go upstairs to where your stuff was. Steve caught up in time to stop you from taking the bag from the floor in his room. You tried to pry it out of his hands but he wouldn’t let go of the bag. You settled for letting go, moving over to stand in front of his window now.
This wasn’t how the night is supposed to be going. The two of you were supposed to have carefree fun. But because of your big mouth, the real world was coming in and tearing it all down. “I don’t want to be here right now.” you said honestly.
“Please,” he said, letting out a sigh. The tip of his fingers curled over your shoulders as he slowly dragged you back to press against his front. Crossing his arms over your chest like a blanket. “This isn’t how I wanted things to go.”
“I know, me neither.” you said softly, voice sounding small and unfamiliar. This sudden weak feeling was still so unfamiliar to you. Especially with Steve of all people. He was the only one for a while other than Jonthan that you felt you could be vulnerable with. But at the moment, it’s the furthest you wanted to be.
He pressed a kiss to your neck, soft and loving. But didn’t push for you to turn around. You kept your gaze out of his window the pool, letting the light distract you from the eyes you know would instantly pull you in.
“Take my room tonight..I’ll..take you home in the morning if you still want to leave.”
You nodded your head, staying in place, frozen. He gave you just one more kiss to your shoulder before he fully let go. His steps dragged as he slowly made his way to the door. As if he were waiting to see if you’d change your mind. But you knew you couldn’t.
The wood creaked softly as he tugged it close, but not before he softly said one more message.
“I love you, don’t forget that.”
With that he closed up the door, officially ending the conversation and the night. The distant sound of him heading back downstairs followed along with the heavy beats of your hearts.  It was all that beat in your head as you made your way over to Steve’s bed.
The familiar comforting smell of his fabric softener hitting your senses instantly. It wasn’t until you dragged the covers over your body that you felt the tears break through. Reaching out, you turned off the lamp by his bed. Letting yourself be engulfed in the darkness so that you could mull over what could very much be more than just a bad night.
Tumblr media
The following morning, you wake up curled in the comforter of Steve’s bed. He kept his distance throughout the night. Leaving you tossing and turning with a mixture of anxiety and anger coursing through you. Glancing at the watch on your wrist, you note how early in the day it really was. Too early for a heavy sleeper like Steve. It’d be at least a good hour or two before he stirred awake on his own.
Glancing at his nightstand, you hesitantly reached over for the phone. Fingers twitching just about the receiver. It didn’t feel right to do this. It felt cowardly. But if you stayed the morning and continued to talk the way you both did last night…well, you weren’t sure where things would head.
The dial tone only rang twice before the person on the other end finally picked up.
 “Hello?”
 “Nancy, it’s me.”
“Hey! Are you okay?” asked the girl with concern.
“No, I’m not okay.” There’s a tremble to your voice and you silently curse yourself for already feeling like breaking down at the comforting tone of your friend. “Do you think you can pick me up? I’m over at–”
“I know where you are. I’m on my way.”
It only took Nancy about ten minutes to arrive outside the driveway of Steve’s house. The moment you saw her familiar car, you quickly moved out the door. Carefully shutting it behind you as you walked down the pathway.
Her regular curls were tied up messily on the top of her head. Sleepiness was still heavy on her face along with the remnants of her makeup from yesterday. But her blue eyes, however, were filled with a familiar worry that had you slightly relieved.
Guilt quickly engulfed you. Not only were you ditching Steve with nothing but a note saying you’d call him later. But you had your friend up early with no other information as to if you were okay or not.
It felt like nothing about this weekend was ever going to go right.
You quickly entered the car. Allowing the heater to warm you up as you buckled into your seat. It wasn’t until you were settled in that you were brave enough to look over at Nancy. A small smile tugging at your lips when you noticed she had driven over in her plaid pajama set. The only thing fit for the weather was her jacket and the heavy snow boots she had.
“Thanks.” you said softly, rubbing your cold hands together. “I know it’s early and you weren’t really expecting to hear from me. But we uh…” the argument suddenly returned to your mind. Making your voice die down and water prickle at the rim of your eyes.
“It’s okay.” she cut in softly, reaching out to grab at your hands. “We don’t have to talk about it yet.”
Nodding your head thankfully, you look out onto the dashboard. Trying to focus on anything to control the moisture that’s trying to leak out. Nancy let out a small sigh before suddenly turning to face you.
“Wanna get some breakfast?” she asked, causing you to look over at her. Her smile was big and she had a small look of determination on her face. While a part of you really wanted to go back home and cry into your pillow for the rest of the weekend, something about maybe dishing out your current problems over a hot plate of food sounded oddly comforting.
“Know a place that has good waffles?”
Smirking a bit, she changed the gear on the car. “I know just the place.”
The low hum of music was the only noise after that. You couldn’t help but steal a longing glance in your rearview mirror. Taking in one last look at Steve’s house, and for the weekend that it could have been.
A regretful choice unfortunately. Because as the view of the house began to grow smaller, so did the sight of Steve standing at the front of his door. Alone. With nothing but a note in his hands.

A/N: Please don’t hate me! I wanted to make sure this chapter had enough fluff, smut, drama, and set up for the future of the season.

You keep your eyes steadfastly on the horizon, scanning for any sign of land. The water gleams blue-black in the moonlight, and you’re not sure if you could make out a landmass even if there was one, but you don’t have anything better to do.
“You gonna stay there the whole time?” The boy drawls from his hammock. It’s the same one who’d helped you onto the ship earlier with long-fingered, calloused hands. “You sea sick or something?”
“No,” you huff. “Just thinking of making a swim for it.”
The pirate snorts. “How far are you thinking you can swim, sweetheart? The closest land is the island we picked you up on.” You turn to him, and you must look as ferocious as you feel, because he raises his hands in a lazy don’t-shoot gesture. “Hey, you’re welcome to go back if that’s what you want. Since apparently being rescued doesn’t suit you.”
“But rescued by whom?” you spit. “Being stuck with pirates doesn't seem like a very good alternative to being stranded.”
His mouth curls up on the right side. “You make us sound so nefarious, gorgeous. We’re trying to make ends meet, just like everyone else.”
“Everyone else seems capable of staying within the law.”
“But whose law?” You make no answer, and after a minute, he climbs out of his hammock. You stiffen as he comes towards you but don’t allow yourself to move away, even when he leans against the edge of the ship, barely a foot from you. “I think we got off on the wrong foot,” he says, and the gentleness of his tone surprises you. “What’s your name?”
You narrow your eyes. Isn’t that sort of thing valuable information to a pirate? What if they think to hold you for ransom?
If he’s put out by your silence, he doesn’t show it. “Fair enough. Mine’s Eddie.”
He sticks out a hand, and you shake it warily, eyeing the knife at his belt all the while.
“Listen,” he goes on, undeterred by your hostility. “I know you probably have lots of ideas about pirates, and how we’re all wild, evil brutes, but no one here is going to hurt you.” He looks you in the eye, raising his eyebrows imploringly. “I promise, okay? We’re hoping to make land by the end of the week, and then you can run if you want, or I can help you figure out how to get wherever you wanna go. Sound good?”
You look at him, the contrast between the warm brown of his eyes and the cold steel of his knife confusing you. You don’t know if you can trust him, but you suppose you don’t have much choice.
“Okay,” you say finally. “Why would you do that, though? Why even bother taking me with you?”
Eddie shrugs, relaxing a bit now that you no longer look like you’re going to take a dive over the edge of the ship. “Why not? We’ve got enough food to feed an extra mouth, and we’re still making money whether we help people out or not.”
Making money…”Through robbery, you mean.”
Eddie doesn’t bristle like you expect him to. “Depends on who you ask. If one group of people takes money from another and we intercept it somewhere in the middle, is it any more stolen than it already was?”
You go quiet again, and Eddie gives you a soft sort of smile. “I’m not trying to lecture you, sweetheart, I just want you to understand that we’re not bad guys. At least,” he allows, “we don’t see ourselves that way. You’re safe here.”
“Alright,” you say quietly, finding yourself closer and closer to believing him. “Thank you.”
Eddie’s grin looks almost goofy. “No thanks necessary,” he assures you. “Think you might be able to sleep now, though? I find being stuck on a ship with the same people every day does not mix well with sleep deprivation. Don’t need you getting snappy with the Captain tomorrow.”
You gnaw on your lip, looking warily around the ship for a safe corner to curl up in. You don’t want to go below deck with the rest of the men, but you don’t like the idea of one of them stumbling upon you up here in the morning either.
Eddie seems to wisen to your dilemma, nodding pensively. “You can have my hammock, if you want. I’ve got an extra few blankets, I could make myself a bed right next to it so nobody bothers you.”
You look at him hopefully, too exhausted and on edge to feel guilty. “Really?”
He chuckles, nudging you in the direction of the hammock. “Sure, sweetheart. We’ll figure out something better in the morning.”
You climb into the hammock, shifting around awkwardly until you find a comfortable position. You watch over the edge as Eddie folds the blankets he’s stored nearby, making a little sleeping pad for himself. You try to imagine this boy holding his knife to a sailor’s throat, laughing at bloodshed, burning villages to the ground. He looks up at you as he gets settled, flashing you a smile and a dorky thumbs-up. You can’t picture it.
“Goodnight,” you say quietly, letting your body relax into its fabric cradle.
“Sleep tight,” Eddie sing-songs, and with that last reassurance, you let the shushing of the waves lull you to sleep.

Hey, how are you doing? I hope you’re alright. 💕 I’ve been reading your status updates on Constellations and the Epilogue, and I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re amazing. Your writing is incredible and I love it. Your stories are so well thought out and the characters are ✨on point✨, and the plot is complex and detailed and aaahhh! It has me hooked! 🤩
And I understand how it hurts when you put so much effort and love into a story, only to post it and not see others be anywhere near as excited or invested as you are. I know how discouraging it can be. And it may be a little silly, but I do want to apologize for not commenting lately—life took some difficult turns for me healthwise around the end of last year and I haven’t been able to catch up! I’m still on Chapter 4 of Constellations! 😭 BUT Chapter 5 is open on my phone, and I am READY to read it as soon as I have the time (and mental energy, but that’s a whole ‘nother issue 😩). Don’t worry that your writing isn’t enough, or be discouraged if some readers don’t catch hints while others are figuring it all out seemingly too easily. Everybody reads and comprehends stuff differently, and it’s not a sign that your writing is bad if they don’t catch it! Honestly, I’m pretty bad at catching hints the first time I read a story unless they’re pretty darn obvious. I don’t usually notice subtle hints until the second, or third, or even seventh read-through, haha! (on the bright side, rereading stories and rewatching TV shows is always fun!) 😅
I guess what I really wanted to say is… don’t give up hope. Don’t lose your love and enthusiasm for your works, or feel like they aren’t worth writing because others don’t seem interested in them. At the heart of it all… at the end of the day… write because you love to. Because it makes you happy. And know that it doesn’t have to be “perfect”—the main goal should be that you enjoy it. That’s something I’m trying to teach myself, too. 💕
Thank you for taking the time to write this message and send it. I appreciate you're very kind words 💕I'm doing okay, I just had to take a step back for a bit from socials and stuff. I'm gonna keep that up for a while.
Please don't apologize for not commenting or taking your time reading. Your health always comes first, and I'm sorry if I came off as childish or needy, that wasn't my intention. Two things just happened that set me off and the timing of it was incredibly poor 😓
Please take your time reading; none of it is going anywhere, and don't feel obligated to leave comments either. i'm realizing that, even if chapters are short or long, finding the time to finish things is difficult, and everyone lives different lives. And I'm sorry about all the spoilers on this blog, I'll tag that better from now on.
But I really do think I got confused or disjointed in my perceptions; everyone here knows so much because i've been asked questions and given answers and people have interacted, so people following me here have more context than the average ao3 user. But I've kinda been expecting everyone to be on the same page, which will never be true.
I'm also the same way where it takes me a while to pick up on hints. I actually changed my writing style to prevent this. I got tired of reading books in college where you had to dive into every little thing. the hints and clues weren't obvious to me. I decided then that, when I wrote, I wanted things to be bold, obvious, but beautiful. I didn't want to make readers feel like they're missing something. I wanted them to trust that every answer, every clue would be answered in time. I made that promise to myself a decade ago, and being reminded of how different people interpret things just...made me remember.
I take writing really seriously, probably too seriously, but I've been doing it for so long and I love doing it. I want to be good at it. When it feels like I've gone back on that promise to myself, I get frustrated. I think of ways I could've fixed things. But I also remember that those books and those writing styles just weren't for me. I wasn't the target audience.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I wanted to explain why I got upset. I still love Constellations and I'm posting it on ao3 out of convenience, really. It's easier to reference and search there in one "Entire Work" than to have 5 documents open. The fact that others can see and read and have fun is a bonus. But I'm committed to telling this story, and I'm gonna finish with a bang.
Thank you, I won't forget why I'm doing this and that my thoughts/feelings come first! 😤I hope your health concerns are taken care of soon. Take it easy, and thanks again! 💕

Stay - a.shelby
Tumblr media
This is my fic. Please do not repost this (reblogs are good). Do not copy my writing. Do not steal my writing. All rights are reserved for my writing and my original character(s).
(warnings: swear words, mentions of killing, PTSD)
(pairing: Arthur Shelby x f!reader)
(gif credit to @/becomeablade)
(word count without lyrics: 772)
(a/n: this fic is based on the song 'stay' by post malone. this is my second fic for @runnning-outof-time's halfway to 2K writing challenge! congrats again!)
It's true
That all that you know is all that you are
You said that it's all that you want and more
Fuck off, and pour another drink
And tell me what you think
You know that I'm too drunk to talk right now
You put your cigarette out on my face
So beautiful, please, woman
Don't break your back for me
I'll put you out of your misery
It all began when the members of the Shelby family had gone separate ways after the (almost) lynching incident. Arthur and (y/n) had moved out to the country, wanting the simple life. (y/n) knew Arthur hadn't been the same since then, as his PTSD was nearly taking over. He had been working on coping with it, and for that (y/n) was proud of him.
The next day, Ada came to visit. However, her visit wasn't on good terms. She'd informed Arthur about the black hand the entire family had received in the mail.
He was torn. Should he ignore it all and remove himself from the situation completely? Or should he dive right back into what he knows best?
He still debated the topic overnight while (y/n) slept peacefully next to him. Half of him wanted to lock his past in a box and send it to the bottom of the ocean, but the other half wanted to fight this war.
Arthur had gotten himself so worked up, that he decided he needed a good drink. He quietly left in the middle of the night and drove out to Small Heath.
Tell me that it's all okay (Tell me that it's all okay)
I've been waitin' on this all damn day (Waitin' on this all damn day)
Call me in the mornin', tell me how last night went
I'm here
But don't count on me to
Stay a little longer, if you convince me
And tell me all the things that you have against me
Every time we make up, the truth is fadin'
Everybody's blind when the view's amazin'
(y/n) woke up the next morning, only to find an empty spot on the bed next to her. She rushed to get up, not finding a note or any indication anywhere that Arthur mentioned he was leaving.
She began calling his relatives, starting with Ada, then Tommy, John, and Polly. She even phoned the betting shop, and received yet another “I haven't seen him.”
By early afternoon, her head felt like it was spinning. She'd been asking the same questions all day and always received the same answer.
“Have you heard from Arthur?”
“No, sorry.”
“Have you seen Arthur?”
“No, sorry.”
“I'm calling about Arthur, do you know where he is?”
“No, sorry.”
“Have you spoken to Arthur within the past day or so?”
“No, sorry.”
After hours of uneasiness, tiredness, and anxiety, (y/n) ultimately broke. She sat on the couch, letting the tears fall. There was nothing promised with Arthur when she first met him, but she was prepared for that. Now that their lifestyle had changed? She wasn't sure she was ready to go through that again.
Damn, who are we right now?
Can we have a little conversation?
Figure it out with no intoxication
We carry on, what is our motivation?
We're never wrong, how the hell we gonna make it?
Arthur finally came home later that night. He entered the house, finding (y/n) asleep on the couch. He noticed the phone and a list of crossed-out names on the coffee table. He assumed she must've called everyone in search of him. He faintly smiled at the thought of her being so worried about him, but at the same time, that's what brought him home.
He moved the things aside and sat on the coffee table across from her. He placed a hand on her arm, and she immediately woke up.
“Where the hell have you been? I've been worried sick about you! What were you doing? How could you up and leave like that? Is that blood?”
Arthur breathed before answering all her questions, “It's alright, love. I went into Small Heath, down to the Garrison. I needed to clear my head, so I went and got a drink. I'm sorry to leave like that, but I'll explain everything to ya once this is over. And yes, it's blood. No, it's not mine.”
(y/n) sat still for a moment, soaking in his words.
“Who are we right now?”
“I'm a mess of a man who's married to a woman who worries about him.”
“Arthur…”
“It's alright, I mean that in a good way. Ya worry about me a lot more than I do. I appreciate that. I need that.”
Maybe we're used to this
Tell me, what are we to do?
It's like we only play to lose
Chasin' pain with an excuse
I love that shit and so do you
But don't break your back for me
I'll put you out of your misery
Arthur and (y/n) had both finally calmed down from the dreary day they'd had. The two lay in bed, (y/n) simply resting in her lover's arms.
“What happened that made you disappear?”
“When Ada came over, she told me the family'd been served a black hand. I was torn between throwing that part of my life away and diving straight into it.”
“I don't advise chasing pain with an excuse.”
“I'm not, love. All I know is, you're the lighthouse in my raging ocean. This time, I followed the light. I'm done with that part of my life.”
“I'm honored, Arthur.”
Tell me that it's all okay (Tell me that it's all okay)
I've been waitin' on this all damn day (Waitin' on this all damn day)
Call me in the mornin', tell me how last night went
I'm here
But don't count on me to stay
The couple finally settled, turning their bedside lights off and finding a comfortable position. Arthur held (y/n) close to him, her head resting on his chest. Before the two drifted off, Arthur still had one more thing on his mind.
“Tell me that it's all okay.”
“It's all okay, my love,” she affirmed, placing a small, tender kiss on his chest.

With a large thud a human fell out of the portal landing on their behind, they rose to their feet dusting themself off “ouch what the hell,” he stood in a large dimly lit courtroom with six other figures “ Oh no, no no no,” he whispered.
The human's eyes widened “SEND ME BACK, SEND ME BACK RIGHT NOW!” he yelled to the court
The man who sat at the center of the judge's desk cleared his throat “Fear not Liam for this is the exchange program you signed up for-” Liam cuts him off
“You don’t understand,” he runs his shaky hands through his black scruffy hair “I was in the middle of cooking before you popped me over here, THE STOVE IS ON AND I’M GONNA LOSE THE SECURITY DEPOSIT ON THE HOUSE TO STIR-FRY!”
Another man with raven hair and crimson eyes stood from his seat “Lord Diavolo with your permission, I’ll escort Liam home to fix this mess and we’ll be back shortly for proper introductions after,” with his arms crossed he was lightly tapping on his bicep.
Diavolo nodes “Alright, come back soon.” He raises a brow when his dear old friend walks at an unusually fast pace towards Liam who's bouncing from one foot to the other. Lucifer raises his hand as a large glowing portal opens, and the human dives straight in.
Lucifer sighed, massaging his incoming headache “your grandmother is going to kill me.” he hissed under his breath.
------------------------------------------
Popping out the other side of the portal Liam scrambles through the living room to the smoky room. After saving the kitchen and cracking open the windows allowing the smoke to escape appeasing the fire alarm.
“Phew,” wiping his forehead with the sleeve of his hoodie and looking at the partially charred chicken and veggies “It’s salvageable at least. '' he pants.
Popping his head into the living room finding Lucifer looking at the wall of family photos “I know you promised to bring me back as soon as possible but,” he pauses, “ could I finish cooking this, it’s supposed to be dinner for my family, It won’t take long and I could grab my bags while we’re still here.”
Sighing Lucifer folds his arms “Fine but, no more than 30 minutes understood? You still need to introduce yourself properly to Diavolo and the others as well.”
Liam beams at him and salutes him ”Got it, thank you mister ummm…” scratching the top of his head with his finger.
Lucifer’s brows furrow, “You don’t remember my name?” his lips press into a thin line.
“I-I’m sorry,” rubbing the back of his head, “I’ve never met a high-ranking demon before today, and the books never do anyone justice,” he lets out a stiff laugh.
The demon scoffs “Of course they don’t, those old relics are past their prime,” Lucifer straightens his back raising his chin “I’m Lucifer, the Avatar of Pride.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Avatar of Pride, I’m Liam Ward, but you already know that cause of the admission papers,” letting out a cough, “well I should go finish dinner now.” vanishing behind the door frame. Before popping his head right back out the door frame “I’m sorry I forgot to ask earlier, would you like something to drink?”
“Tsk, no thank you, now hurry up we mustn’t keep the prince waiting”
“R-right!” Liam scurries back into the kitchen.
Lucifer turns back to the photos as his shoulders drop “ I suppose it has been a long time for you humans since I last visited,” he spots a group photo of three younger humans one resembling Liam, and two adults seated surrounding an old lady in a wheelchair, “how is Sen doing these days, better I hope.”
------------------------------------------
Liam returns back to the living room juggling a suitcase in each hand. To the sight of Lucifer standing in front of the family mantle, staring at a photo of an older gentleman. He stands beside Lucifer “that's my grandfather, he passed away a few years ago,” Liam’s grip on the luggage handle tightens.
Lucifer slowly nods, still facing the photo.
Taking a deep breath Liam counts off his fingers “Alright, foods done and put away, I wrote a note for them,” a grin forms across his face “and bags are ready to go.”
Lucifer once more waves his hand revealing a portal “I assume you’ll need help with your bags”
‘No no I’m fine I swear” dragging one of the sagging suitcases
Lucifer snatches the visibly heavier bag from Liam’s grasp “we’ll be late at this rate, come along now,” as he disappears into the portal.
Liam hurries over with the suitcase in tow. before stopping short of the portal and looking back to his grandpa’s photo, smiles wide “see ya later gramps.”

Exodus 8:1-9:35, Matthew 19:13-30, Psalms 24:1-10, Proverbs 6:1-5
Today is the 29th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is fantastic to be here with you today and to be here together to greet a brand-new sparkly week together and step into it together. It's all out there friends, the whole week. We’re gonna live into it and it's gonna tell a story and whatever story it tells us where we are or what we’re doing. And, so, may we choose the path of wisdom as we navigate this week. And a wise move is to be around the Global Campfire taking the next step forward together and just allowing the Scriptures to speak for themselves and wash their way into our lives and seep into our hearts. And, so, let’s dive in. We will read from the New English Translation this week, picking up the story where we left off yesterday in the book of Exodus, where it seems as if quite a confrontation is brewing. Moses and Aaron are telling Pharaoh, the Pharaoh of Egypt, the supreme power of Egypt, the one who believes he’s descended from deity to let his people go. And Pharaoh's like, I don't know who this God is, I don't care who this God is, I don't know this God and I'm not letting these people go. And there's been some little skirmishes, some little dialogue back and forth and some signs and wonders that have been replicated by the...by the Egyptian magicians, but things are moving to a whole new level. And, so, let's pick up that story. Exodus, chapters 8 and 9 today.
Prayer:
Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for a brand-new shiny sparkly week out in front of us to engage with the Scriptures. We thank you for life itself, moment by moment, a gift given from you. Each inhale an inspiration, a gift of life. Each exhale trust knowing that the next breath will be given to us. We love you. We thank you for your love and involvement in our lives and we thank you for the power of the Scriptures in our hearts to transform us. And, so, as we begin this week we look to the Psalms and we see characteristics of those who dwell in your presence, those whose deeds are blameless, whose motives are pure, who do not lie, who do not make promises and have no intention of keeping them. Such people are rewarded by the Lord and vindicated by the God who delivers them we are told. Make us these people. Make us like this. Make us blameless and pure and true and honest, we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hey DAB family this is Jonathan from Denver it is 5:43 on Tuesday January 24th 24and today I'm actually calling in to ask for some prayer for myself. I am a student. I'm a college getting a music education degree and this semester. I am student teaching in a choir classroom, a high school choir classroom which is fantastic, and I really am enjoying it but I am just so tired and I have so much stuff I need to do and so many things that are pulling and vying for my attention and it's just…oh…I feel like I can't even think straight right now. So, I'm just asking please that you would send up your prayers for focus, for energy, for good priorities and smart time management just so that I can do all the things that I need to do, that I can do them well, and that I can make a difference in the classroom and in all the places I find myself. Thank you, family. Thank you for your support and your prayer. I'm praying for all of you along with you. Yeah. Thank you all very much. I love you. Hope you have a great day. See you next time.
Hey fam it's Sparky. I just wanted to give some encouragement. Anybody who's struggling. Lord, I ask that you help me to guide this. You're looking at a kid that was troubled all the way through his childhood who never had a sense of who he was or we were he was gonna be. You’re looking at somebody that was having a baby at 20 who had the girlfriend at 18 who was about to graduate high school. She already had one which is now my oldest. You're looking at somebody that was in and out of jail constantly. And Bruce, Clarence, Sampson I pray for you because I should have been there. You’re…you're looking at somebody who just constantly seemed to fall and mud every turn he took, but you're also looking at somebody that has defeated all of the negative thoughts of people that they thought of them or thought in God. There's people that I meet every day that think I'm a really good person and then there's people that I run into that they new me what I really wasn't. No matter what you're going through God is right there. He just wants you to talk to Him no matter what you're going through. It's not all daisies and roses when you invite God into your life but there is a Father that you get to lay with and He helps you make your decisions. I just want you to know it gets better with God and I love you and I'm thinking about all of y'all tonight.
Hey DAB brothers and sisters this is Byron out in Florida. I am calling for my beloved daughter Ashley. Ashley I heard your call and you're asking to be called what Naomi wanted herself to be called when she came back from being away and she wanted to call herself Mara which means bitter because she had lost so much and it hurt so much. And it seems you too have lost a lot and have hurt a lot in your 51 years and my heart just goes out to you. I know you already know this because you know Naomi, but her story doesn't end with her being called bitter. It ends with her being called blessed. We know her in the Bible because her story ends with blessing and not just blessing for her but blessing for all of us who through her line comes our savior the Lord Jesus. And the reason Naomi in the end was able to call herself blessed was because she did not lose faith in her kinsman redeemer, that she knew that he was going to do the right thing once he saw what the problem was. And, so, my prayer for you is that your ending is as Naomi, that while you may be called bitter now you'll be called blessed in the end because your kinsman Redeemer sees you and will take care of you, will finish what he started in you. Blessings over you sister.
Good morning DAB family this is Bridget from New York City today is new January 25th and I wanna pray for some of the DABbers that have lost children that shared yesterday on just their brokenness, your brokenness. My God Lord I just lift up every person Lord that hears my voice God that has lost a loved one that has lost a child. My God those that You have blessed us with Lord whether it was to drugs to alcohol to disease to trauma to, you know, whatever method my God. Lord, I know that You are greater God than these situations, great enough to help us carry these burdens Lord So, Father as I think about Jesus. I think about how He walked wounded in His heart knowing that the very creation that loved Him would be…I mean the very creation that He created that instead of loving Him would crucify Him God. And yet, you know. He still walked in a love that was beyond our understanding. And I just pray that these people that are hurting because of loss from their children God that Lord, You will fill them up with love, with a love that is deeper than the love for their own children God, with Your love Jesus, the love that You have for us my God. I just ask You to overwhelm them with comfort and to give them the exact words and the scriptures that they need that will help them to continue to walk this path my God. And bless them all I pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen. I love you guys. God bless you.
Hello DAB family this is Texas Grandma calling to encourage you. I've been part of this family since 2010 and you've encouraged me so much every year. And, so, I'm here today because the beginning of this year I just realized this heavy spirit of sadness was settling over me and I hear that from so many of you. Now family, we know that's not from our loving Father. So, let's say no to the enemy who came to steal and kill our joy and cover up our light. And every day let's read some scriptures out loud. Even though we love to hear Brian read them, say them out loud. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. And then sings praise songs because the enemy scatters when we sing praises to our God. Why don't you…why don't you just sing along with me right now some little praise songs. [singing starts] Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong we are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so. This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine. This light of mine I'm gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine [singing stops]. I love you family. Now have a blessed day and let's claim victory over this enemy. We have that victory. Thank you Jesus.

Hi! Can I ask for headcanons of Senkus reaction when he depretrifies his s/o ? Like would he hug right away or wait , how would he present her to the rest of the people etc.. just what you think I love how you write him 😁😁
OMG YESS, I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE REQUEST FROM ME! ASK ALL YOU WANT! This is gonna be long, but most of my H/C’s are because theres so much that i wanna dive into, i want the characters to feel real as if they could jump out of the screen and hug you and say “its gonna be ok, i’m here”.this prompt was a real challenging one, as i had so many things that i could do with it, however i ended up on this :)
Anyway....
Tumblr media
Ishigami Senku x S/O!F!reader : Depretrification.
It had been hundreds of thousands of years since Senku had heard your voice, seen your eyes light up and touch your hands. your lips touching him, your hands around his body, his around yours for a tight hug, he practically fantasized about the moment he would finally meet you again.
when he was petrified, he had so much in his mind, like he was counting and making strategies left and right and his mind was going in circles trying, hoping, to see the light of day.
but whenever he was close to giving up, the thought of you gave him hope and made him keep going.
he swears that at some point, he heard your voice calling out to him, like an outstretched hand awaiting for someone or something to just grab it and take ahold of it, give it a sign that it wasn’t alone.
‘when i get out of here, i’m gonna do everything to save them! 10 billion percent!’
he counted, made plans and tried to theorize everything he could, often pushing himself to the point of being so worn out that-even if he knew death would take him into his grasp if he lost the battle of consciousness- he could just rest.
and then he woke up...
and the sun, the clouds and even the nature around made him take a breath at how new and exciting this world was.
but it also made him to start the long process of work-
of course, he had to survive first and make sure he wasn’t just dancing into deaths hands by being vulnerable.
in between everything, he had to save Taiju and Yuzuriha, defeat Tsukasa, etc of course... but he never forgot you.
everyday that you weren’t with him was another day you couldn’t be together, to hold and cry and laugh, just to be together.
it got to the point that at night, he would wake up and cry out for you, often sending Chrome into a panicked state, like WTF was wrong with Senku?
(of course, when Chrome brought it up to him, Senku made him promise to keep it a secret as there was no way in hell that the information of him having night terrors or looking weak when he was in a position of having to look strong could haunt him in the future.)
after he spent a few months figuring everything out, he went out to try and find you.
Chrome, Kohaku and Gen wanted to help, but it was obvious to anyone that he needed to do it himself- he needed that private time to be vulnerable and loved once he found you.
of course, by this point he needed to get the miracle water from Tsukasa, distracted the guards with a small explosion near by them. when they turned away to investigate, Senku had scooped up all the Nitric acid he needed and fucking bolted.
it took a bit, but through his calculating and observation skills, he found your petrified body.
and that's when he stopped and thought about what he would say, what he would do, and he knew what to do.
It was all a game of chance, to see if your we're awake and waiting for him.
Your body laid on the ground on a small hill, with flowers bursting around your body, as well as moss covering you up 😉
When you asked Senku later, he would reply that he thought time illogically stopped as he looked at the person he had been dreaming and hoping for- the person who encouraged him to never give up.
It was time...
He went over, bent down and poured the Nitric Acid on your face, hoping that the first thing he saw was your eyes meeting his so he can see the love in them again.
And that is exactly what happened.
The stone cracked and suddenly you were free from your prison of stone bolting into his arms, disregarding (or rather, not noticing) your state of undress.
“SENKU!” you cried as you both pulled each other closer to the other one, trying to impossibly get closer to the other more then they already had, their heartbeats mixed into one as they both started crying. “Y/N... I’m sorry I made you wait!” he buckled down and learned onto your shoulder, feeling all the stress and the night terrors melt from his body like wax.
You somehow managed to lift his head up from your shoulder and cup his cheeks, your eyes meeting together, both spilling like over filled cups onto the ground below as the wind swept the leaves and petals around.
“I’m here now, aren’t I?”
And then you leaned in for a kiss and if he had any doubts that it was a dream melted away in the kiss.
Of course, senku didn’t forget to bring a change of clothes, so once Y/N changed, the headed off.
Senku had no more Nightmares, his stress died down and if he had any doubts for the future, you were here with him, so it didn't matter...
Everyone loved you, especially when they saw how close you two were and how different senku seemed to be.
“I love you, Senku”
“I love you too, you silly girl... Y/N.”

Chapter 13: An Understatement
Warnings: blaster fire and descriptions of battle, mentions of injuries, Mando gets pretty hurt and the reader is a wreck (as usual)
Author’s Note: Enjoy Chapter 13!
Tumblr media
Mando’s POV
All Mando could think about was you.
Did you protect the child? There’s no way you leaked their info to the Empire and betrayed them, right? Were you dead?
Somehow, the third option scared him the most.
As if this could not get any worse, Moff Gideon opened his mouth yet again.
“I have just received word that you seem to have a very valuable asset on your side,” he said, and Mando knew exactly what he was getting at.
He was referring to you.
Mando’s mind raced a million miles a minute. The Empire were after you, and they had to know you had the child with them. You could hold your own, he knew that, but against an entire regime of soldiers?
Mando knew you would rather die than get the child caught, he would do the same thing, but he wanted you alive. That’s all he wanted.
“It’s ironic, really,” Moff continued. “You put your trust in the Empire to get away from the Empire.”
Moff Gideon could insult Mando all he wanted. He could insult his religion, his creed, his past, but something about him referring to you as “the Empire” when you had worked so hard to get away from it rubbed him in all the wrong ways.
You had helped Mando start to put his violent ways aside, but you weren’t here now, and Mando wanted to kill the Moff where he stood.
“It’s time you face the fact that she will return to where she belongs. My side. I hope her betrayal does not hurt your feelings too bad,” Moff said, and Cara scoffed.
Mando’s last button had been pushed.
“She didn’t betray us, Cara,” he said sternly, and Cara rolled her eyes.
“Oh, so you’re on her side? The Empire’s side?,” she responded, and Mando tried to keep his cool.
It wasn’t really working.
“We are on the same side,” Mando snapped back. “It’s time you realized that.”
You would not betray him. If you were any other person in the galaxy, Mando would start to give up now. But you showed him, in the very brief time you were together, that even people with the worst pasts can still have good hearts.
You made him feel like an idiot. Like a joke. He hadn’t genuinely cared for a person since his parents, but then the kid came along, and then you came along. It’s like the galaxy was showing him perfect prizes, but the game was impossible to win.
But the very worst part of it all, was that Mando was willing to try.
What had you done to him?
Your POV
To say this day did not go as planned was an understatement.
One second you are running for your life, the next you are being scooped up by a metal hand. It happened so fast you barely even had time to register you were lifted off the ground and placed onto a speeder bike.
Once you finally did register what had happened, you immediately thought it was the Empire’s doing, so you turned around and aimed your longspear at the driver.
“Please don’t,” the droid responded. “Me being dead would make this much worse for you.”
The nurse droid, you thought to yourself. From Kuiil’s house!
You were in such a haze of mourning and sadness those couple of days, you barely remembered meeting the droid. You even forgot it rode on the ship to this planet!
You relaxed a bit and lowered your longspear, smiling internally at the thought that a piece of Kuiil was still alive, but you didn’t put your guard down.
You hadn’t put your guard down in days, so it’s not like your overall body language changed that much.
You made sure the child was ok, and once your head finally cleared, you realized Mando was trying to reach you again.
“Kuiil, Y/N, somebody come in.”
The droid picked up the comm device before you could get it, and responded in a very monotoned voice.
“Kuiil has been terminated.”
That ought to make Mando feel better, won’t it, you thought to yourself.
You were going to take the comm device out of the droid’s hand, but you froze when you heard Mando’s tone of voice speaking through the comms again.
“What did you do?” he asked, and you swore you could hear the venom dripping from his mouth.
It always surprised you how scary Mando could really be when he tried.
“I am fulfilling my basic function,” the droid responded.
“Which is?” Mando asked.
“To nourish and protect.”
With that statement, the droid sped up the bike, and you held the child in your lap. He looked up at you with confused eyes, and you could tell he was asking why you weren’t going home.
“We are going to save him little guy,” you said with a stroke to his ear. “We will be home before you know it.”
You smiled lightly to yourself, and before you knew it, the speeder bike was roaring through the town and taking out every trooper in sight.
Blaster fire surrounded you and you tried to focus on what was ahead.
Mando was trapped…. But where?
Finally, you squinted your eyes and saw a regiment of soldiers ahead, and you knew Mando and the rest of the team were trapped inside the building.
“There!” you yelled, pointing to Mando’s cage, and the droid turned you and the child around for protection while he continued to fire.
It was slightly disorienting at first, because you honestly didn’t expect that to happen, but you felt better about the child’s safety.
This droid is no dummy, you thought to yourself. Kuiil did a good job.
Your heart pulled slightly at the thought of Kuiil, still laying out in the desert, but he would get his proper burial.
You just had to make sure Mando didn’t get one of those first.
The droid finally slowed down, and you took the opportunity to jump off the speeder bike and dive behind a pillar.
You got the child situated in your arms well enough so he could be protected, and started making your way out of your hiding spot.
You knew you couldn’t fight with the child in your arms, that’s just stupid, but you did reflect blaster shots from the troopers and took as many out as you could.
You had to start making your way to Mando somehow, but out of the corner of your eye, it seemed Mando was coming to you.
Mando charged out into the open with Karga on his tail, and he fired at will. He kicked and punched the troopers who were close enough to him, and you couldn’t help the smile that graced over your face at the sight of him.
You couldn’t see it, but Mando was smiling too.
You stuck close to the buildings surrounding you, slowly making your way around to where Karga was, but the chaos was insane. You could barely see where the shots were coming from, let alone where you were sending them.
You looked around to find some other way, but what you did see was way better.
Mando was running to a huge cannon, and you watched him rip it off the tripod and start firing it at the stormtroopers.
Your hopes were on the rise.
You saw a dark black death trooper place a detonator on the wall of Mando’s former cage, and you panicked when you realized Cara was still in there.
You started to make your way over there when the explosion hit, but you were far enough away so that you didn’t feel any wave from it.
You continued to make your way over to her.
Your senses were going so crazy, that you didn’t even feel Moff Gideon enter the scene.
What you did feel, however, was the pain Mando felt when the Moff fired a shot directly into his helmet.
It hurt like hell, and you heard Mando cry out in pain.
You turned back to where Mando was, and you saw him take aim at Moff with his canon.
This is it, you thought. Moff Gideon is dead.
You wish you hadn’t been trained in the force so well, because the very next thing you felt was the pride in Moff’s chest when he realized how to take Mando out.
Your eyes widened and panic struck you like lighting.
Moff is gonna kill him.
“Mando,” you screamed, but it was too late.
Moff Gideon had already fired at the generator next to Mando, and you had no choice but to dive for cover. You shielded the child with your body, and you were lucky enough to not feel the effects of the explosion.
But Mando felt it all.
When the dust cleared, you saw Cara dragging, his body back inside while Karga and IG-11 followed her in.
You didn’t care about anything in that moment. And if you would have known merely weeks ago that you would run across a battle field with no armour and a child in your arms, you would have smacked yourself silly.
But you did it anyways.
You made it to the door right before it closed, and you stopped in your tracks when you almost ran right into Cara’s gun.
It was pointed right at you.
“Get out,” she said, and you raised the hand not holding the child in surrender.
“Cara please,” you plead. You could see Mando laying on the floor behind her, and your heart was breaking.
He was badly injured. You could feel it.
“You can kick me out as soon as you’d like. I promise. Just let me see him,” you ask.
The tears were starting to cloud your vision and you tried not to let your voice crack. You didn’t want Cara to think you were trying to manipulate her.
But your Mandalorian was dying behind her.
“I promise,” you say, and she finally lowers your blaster.
“Thank you,” you respond, letting a breath out of your mouth as you do it, and you run to kneel beside Mando.
Of all the pain you’ve experienced in your life, you had learned a lot about it. You had learned that you personally deal better with pain when you have something to squeeze in your hand, like a pillow or the arm of a chair. You’ve learned that there are people in the world who enjoy making others feel pain, and no matter how many times you try, you just can’t understand why. You’ve learned that bacta shots work wonders for physical pain, but mental pain is almost impossible to numb.
But worse of all, you’ve learned that watching people you care for in pain is the worst pain in the world.
And this one hurt.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this was a popular request LMAO :D
here’s the first part
The ringing of her communicator wakes Lizzie up late in the night. Blinking herself awake, she quickly answers it, speaking quietly so as to not awaken her sleeping fiance next to her. “Hello?”
“Lizzie, it’s Pixl,” comes the familiar British voice. “I’m so sorry to wake you.”
“It’s okay,” Lizzie says. “Is something wrong?”
“Something’s happened with Jimmy.”
Lizzie’s heart skips a beat. “Is he okay?”
“I’ll explain everything later but I could really use your help right now. Are you able to come to the Cod Empire?”
Momentarily forgetting that Pixl can’t see her, Lizzie nods. “Of course, I’ll come over right away.”
“Thanks so much, Lizzie,” says Pixl gratefully. “See you soon.”
“See you.”
Lizzie puts down her communicator and gets out of bed. Just as she’s finished changing, her fiance stirs in his bed and murmurs, “What’s going on? Who was that?”
“Pixl,” replies Lizzie softly, secretly glad he’s awake; she wouldn’t have woken him first. “Something’s happened to Jimmy, and Pixl needs me. You okay to come over to the Cod Empire with me?”
Joel sits up in his bed, immediately more awake. “Of course, of course. Let me get dressed.”
The two fly straight over to the Cod Empire and land outside Jimmy’s house. Pixl answers the door on the first knock. “Queen Lizzie, thank you for coming,” he says gratefully. “And King Joel.”
He leads them inside. Lizzie and Joel both gasp simultaneously as they spot Jimmy lying on the bed.
Joel freezes but Lizzie dashes to his side and grasps his hand, staring down in horror at the bruises covering Jimmy’s face. “Oh my goodness! What happened to him?! Is he okay?!”
Pixl joins her on Jimmy’s other side. “He’s recovering,” he responds grimly. “You know the demon Xornoth that’s shown their face around the server lately?”
“Heard of them.”
“fWhip and Sausage seem to be around the epicentre of the whole thing. They captured Jimmy, kept him in a cell for a whole day, beat him several times, then tried to sacrifice him to Xornoth. Scott and I managed to save him but he almost died from his injuries before Scott was able to heal him somewhat with magic.”
Lizzie gazes down at Jimmy with a worried expression, gently touching his face. He stirs slightly under her touch.
After a moment, she speaks again, her tone low and dangerous. “fWhip and Sausage, you said?”
Pixl nods. “Yeah. Scott and I chased them off but I’m a little worried about them returning to finish the job. That’s why I asked you over; I could do with some help protecting him. If that’s okay.”
“Of course it’s okay.” Lizzie retracts her hand and presses her fist into her palm. “Hell, if either of them show their faces around here, I’ll rip them apart with my bare hands.”
Now Joel moves closer to the bed, his expression uncharacteristically serious. “Poor Jimmy… I can’t imagine how terrified he must’ve been.”
As Pixl opens his mouth to respond, another knock at the door sounds. The three frown at each other, trying to work out who could possibly be at the door.
After a moment, Pixl heads back over to the door and answers it. His gaze darkens when he sees who’s standing there. “You’re not welcome here.”
Lizzie stiffens as she hears MythicalSausage’s voice: “I just wanted to ask how Jimmy is. And to… apologise.”
“Apologise?!” Lizzie bursts out.
Joel draws Pixl out of the way as Lizzie storms to the door and shoves Sausage backwards. “You TORTURED my friend and you think you can just walk over here and APOLOGISE?!”
Sausage scrambles back as a furious Lizzie bears down on him. “I had nothing to do with hurting him! That was all fWhip!”
“YOU THINK THAT MAKES IT BETTER?!” Lizzie bellows.
She flings out her arms and manipulates the ocean water into grabbing hold of Sausage and bringing him closer to her. “ACK!” Sausage chokes, struggling uselessly. “LIZZIE!”
“I’m going to kill you, Sausage,” growls Lizzie. “Would you rather be flung high into the air and fall to your death or drowned in salty ocean water?”
“N-Neither!”
A dark smile appears on Lizzie’s face. “Too bad. I’ve decided I’m gonna drown you.”
She lifts the water higher. His scream is abruptly cut off as the water envelopes his head, stopping him from breathing. She watches with satisfaction as his air slowly runs out.
But then Pixl’s voice comes from behind her: “Lizzie, he’s calling for you. He needs you.”
Lizzie pauses, weighing up her options. Eventually, she releases Sausage onto the dock, taking grim pleasure in the way he splutters and coughs up water. “You’re lucky this time, Sausage,” she says. She kneels down beside him and pushes her face close to Sausage’s with a menacing glare. “But if you ever, and I mean EVER, come near Jimmy again, you’re gonna wish you were never born. Do I make myself clear?”
“Y-Y-Yes!” gasps Sausage.
Lizzie steps back and lets Sausage flee, before rushing back inside and back to Jimmy’s side. Her ally is stirring, his eyelids fluttering. “L-Lizz...ie…”
“I’m here,” whispers Lizzie softly, holding his hand against her cheek to reassure him of her presence. “I’m here, Jimmy. Are you okay?”
Jimmy coughs weakly. “M-My wrists hurt.”
Frowning, Lizzie pushes down Jimmy’s sleeve, revealing the thick red marks. “Wh-What is this?!” she gasps. “Pixl?”
“It’s…” Pixl hesitates, knowing what his next words will likely cause. “They’re burn marks. He had his hands tied behind his back for most of the day in that cell.”
Joel glances sharply at his fiancee. “Uh oh.”
Thunder sounds overhead as dark clouds rapidly slide across the sky. Lizzie’s expression remains steady, but lightning flashes in her eyes. “I’ll be right back, Jimmy,” she says, her voice as steady as her expression. But it’s just an act for Jimmy’s benefit and both Pixl and Joel know it.
Neither Pixl nor Joel stop her as she storms out of the hut and takes off flying towards the Grimlands. She lands atop the outer wall, rain starting to fall from the sky.
“FWHIP!” she bellows, her voice rolling through the clouds and echoing across the land.
Seconds later, the count himself appears atop his tower, within audible distance despite the increasingly loud thunder overhead. “Queen Lizzie!” He spreads his arms wide. “How may I help you?”
A bolt of lightning strikes the very top of fWhip’s tower.
“Aha, what have I done to invoke the wrath of the Ocean Queen?” fWhip laughs.
Instead of replying verbally, Lizzie lifts her arms and summons a giant wave of water from the river, sending it crashing down like a tsunami over the Grimlands.
“NO!” fWhip yells. “My villagers! You’re gonna drown my villagers!”
“MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE YOU TORTURED JIMMY AND TRIED TO MURDER HIM!” roars Lizzie.
fWhip stares at her for a moment as he finally remembers that Lizzie is one of Jimmy’s closest allies. “...oh…”
Shaking himself into action, fWhip dives down into his flooded village. Lizzie watches him, taking grim satisfaction in watching him flounder around in desperation. She doesn’t even realise how close he is to death until-
fWhip drowned
Lizzie quickly dissipates the flood and jumps down to look for fWhip’s items. As she’s starting to pick them up, fWhip reappears, so she retreats back to a safe distance.
“I’ll get my revenge for this, Ocean Queen,” growls fWhip. “I will not take the attempted murder of my villagers lying down.”
“I don’t give a crap,” Lizzie snaps back. “Don’t you dare think about going near Jimmy ever again, because if you do, I can promise you I will wipe your goddamn empire off the face of the world and I will NOT regret doing it.”
fWhip narrows his eyes. “You’re messing with the wrong empire. I too have the power to wipe an empire out of existence.”
“I live in the ocean. The bulk of my empire is underwater now. Your TNT will make a scratch at most.”
fWhip’s mouth opens, then closes again. After a moment, he looks away. “Fine.”
Lizzie raises an eyebrow. “Really? You’re backing down that easily?”
“I’m being smart. You’ve no idea what’s coming, Lizzie. I do. I need to prepare. I can’t afford to be dragged into another war right now.”
As fWhip turns, he finds Lizzie extremely close to him. She grabs the collar of his shirt and pulls him close so that their faces are inches apart. “Then don’t start one,” she snarls. “Stay away from my allies.”
She shoves fWhip away and takes off again, flying back to the swamp. Part of her feels bad at the attack on fWhip’s innocent villagers but she pushes it aside. fWhip tortured Jimmy and was perfectly willing to slaughter him when he was tied up and defenceless.
Lizzie has no sympathy or mercy for a person like that.
When she gets back, Joel meets her at the door. “Lizzie, you’re back!” he gasps. “I saw the death message in chat.”
“Yes. fWhip needed to be told that I won’t tolerate him hurting my Jimmy.” Her gaze flickers from Joel to Pixl and back again. “Or any of you.”
Joel gazes at her with almost visible hearts in his eyes. “I love you so much, Lizzie.”
Lizzie can’t help a chuckle. “I love you too.”
“Guys, guys, come quick!” Pixl calls suddenly. “Guys!”
The two quickly rush to Jimmy’s beside but stop dead simultaneously when they see what Pixl is so panicked about.
A mark has appeared on Jimmy’s neck. It looks like some kind of rune, but what’s worrying about it is the fact that it’s glowing red.
“What is this?” Lizzie gasps. “What’s happening?”
“I don’t know! It just appeared!”
After a few seconds, the glowing dies down, leaving only the clear black mark.
“This has got to be something to do with the demon,” says Pixl shakily. “I don’t know what or how or why, but somehow, fWhip and Sausage’s attempted sacrifice of Jimmy must’ve caused this.”
“But what can we do about it?” Joel asks. “What can we do to help?”
Pixl has no answer to this.
Nobody does.

Tumblr media
July.
You’ve come to dread Fourth of July weekend ever since you became a lifeguard. Although it’s a fun celebration, the pool stayed open much later than normal for the whole weekend, which meant that you had to work longer hours.
Sure, you liked cashing the overtime paycheck, and you always managed to get a few free meals out of the deal thanks to community members, but it was hard work.
Luckily, this year, you had Charlie to help you through the long days. You couldn’t actually see him, not properly anyway, but he did come over and chat with you a few times for a bit while Nicole watched with a suspicious glare.
Rain clouds have shrouded the sun’s warm glow and a bolt of lightening streaks across the gray sky, followed by a clap of thunder that rumbles the Earth. Everyone is forced to get out of the pool and sit under the covered patios until the rain and storm have passed over.
You’re making your way towards the lifeguard’s lounge when a large hand holds your shoulder, effectively stopping you in your tracks. When you turn to look at who the hand is connected to, you smile.
“Mr. Barber.” You say, politely.
He nods. “Coach. Do you need to, uh...check on anything in the storage area?”
The breath catches in your throat as he looks into your eyes, sending a chill down your spine. You know what that look means...
“Now that you mention it, the manager asked me to check on the cleaning supply stock...” You say, a lopsided smirk tugging at the corner of your mouth. “You’re more than welcome to join me, if you’d like.”
He looks over his shoulder, happy to see that Nicole is deep in conversation with a group of other moms.
“You had me at ‘now that you mention it’, coach.”
The two of you scurry off to the back storage area, which is basically just a cage with a roof, and Charlie immediately pins you against the wall. He kisses your neck while he grinds his pelvis against your lower stomach.
You move to jump up and wrap your legs around his waist, but he stops you. You look up at him with a furrowed brow.
“Wanna fuck your thighs today, coach.” He breathes against your neck. “Turn around and keep your legs together for me, alright?”
Nodding, you flip yourself around so that your front is now pressed up against the cage, making sure to keep your thighs together. You look over your shoulder as he begins untying his swim trunks.
“No peeking, Y/N. You know the rules: you’re not allowed to see me until I spread your legs and take your virginity.”
Your head turns back to its normal position and you hear him stroking himself behind you. You want nothing more than to see his cock, touch it, appreciate it; but alas, he won’t allow it.
His small grunts and groans are more erotic than they ought to be and you can feel the slick beginning to dampen your folds. He's standing at full attention, now, and he takes a step forward to press himself up against you.
Your breath hitches as his thick length slides between your thighs, earning a small breathy grunt from the large man behind you. He lets out a shaky sigh before drawing back, then snapping his hips forward again.
“O-Oh, coach.” He breathes into your ear, hands planting next to the top of your head on either side. “Thaaaaaat’s good, so good.”
His little grunts and groans are music to your ears and, mixed with the smack-smack-smack of his skin colliding with yours, it’s an erotic symphony.
“We’ve gotta h-hurry. Storm’s gonna pass over s-soon.” You whisper.
Charlie nods, increasing his thrusting rhythm two-fold. He pants into your ear, one hand sliding down from the wall to wrap around your throat.
“I’m gonna fuck your little virgin cunt so hard.” He growls, reaching down to grab your hip. “Gonna f-fuck you just like this, coach. Right after your pussy stretches out around my cock, I’m gonna fuck you nice and h-hard, make you cum.”
You moan, biting your lip. “C-Charlie...fuck.”
“Ohhhhhhhhh, Y/N, I’m c-close. Gonna cum--” His hips come to an abrupt halt and he buries his face in the crook of your neck as he cums, a low groan muffled against your skin.
Your head tilts down just in time to see the liquid ropes erupt from between your legs and you can feel the way his length pulses before each rope shoots out.
He’s panting against your neck, planting the occasional open-mouthed kisses on your skin as he catches his breath. Once he regains control of his breathing, he tucks himself back into his swim trunks and turns you around, holding your hips.
“Sorry I didn’t have time to make you cum, coach. I’ll make it up to you next time, I promise.”
You shake your head, smiling up at him. “No apology necessary, Charlie. I still had a good time, regardless. You know I like helping you get off.”
Charlie bends down and presses a kiss to the tip of your nose, laughing softly when your face crinkles up. “You’re the best. Now, you should probably get back out there before anyone gets suspicious. I’ll hang back for a bit, have a cigarette or something.”
“See you soon, C.” You say before heading towards the door.
“You’ve never used that one before, coach.” He says, causing you to turn around.
“Oh, uh, yeah. It just sorta slipped out. Sorry.”
“No need.” His lips tug up into a smile. “I kinda like it.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The union between Charlie and Nicole has been noticeably shaken and strained as of late, you’ve noticed. You wonder if she somehow found out about you and Charlie.
Ever since the first private swim lesson, you and Charlie have been rendezvousing under the starlight on a weekly basis. Sure, there’s been some swimming involved, but it usually doesn’t last very long. He can’t keep his hands off you for more than about fifteen minutes at a time when you’re together.
It’s not just the physical connection; you and Charlie have incredibly compatible personalities, too. You get along really well and there’s a lot of natural chemistry between the two of you. You find yourself counting the minutes until the pool closes on lesson days, count the seconds until Charlie walks through the gate.
Tonight, you’re already in the pool when Charlie arrives, practicing your own technique. He sets his bag down on one of the loungers and watches as you make your way back down the lane in backstroke. He can’t help but look at your breasts, he’s got the perfect angle to look down your suit...
You flip back over and pull the goggles up over your head, smiling as you swim up and pull yourself onto the side of the pool.
“Hey, C.”
He smirks, walking over and jumping into the pool, swimming up to you with just his eyes above the surface. You giggle as he grabs hold of your ankles and lifts them up, forcing your upper body to fall back against the pool deck.
“Good evening, coach.”
His lips kiss and nibble at your ankle bones before trailing up your leg. Your skin erupts in goosebumps as his kisses draw closer and closer to your clothed center, which has already begun to heat up from his actions.
Your eyes never break away from his as he sucks at the tender flesh of your inner thighs, just at the hem of your bathing suit bottoms. You suck in a sharp breath when his nose lightly drags across your crotch, and his eyebrows raise.
“What was that, coach?” He asks, grinning to himself. “Did you...like something that I did, in particular?”
You’ve always sort of had a thing for Charlie’s nose, you have no idea why you found something so not traditionally sexy attractive, but now all you’re thinking about is how lovely it’d feel to have his nose bumping against your clit as he eats you out.
“Um, w-well, I--”
His nose swipes back over your crotch, cutting you off and replacing the rest of your response with a gasp. He grins wickedly.
“Oh, so that’s what you like.” A low chuckle escapes his lips.
He does it again, and again, nose dragging against your damp crotch. You’re practically dripping by now, the feeling and sight of him rubbing against you is simultaneously too much and not enough.
“Charlie...” You breathe, chewing your lip.
His finger comes up and teases your entrance over your suit, pushing some of the fabric in before letting it snap back into place. Your legs instinctively fall open further at his movements, eyes fluttering shut as his mouth hovers over your clothed crotch.
He looks up at you, then. “You’re gonna cum just like this, coach, or you’re not gonna cum at all. Understood?”
You nod. “Y-Yes, Mr. Barber.”
The formality, the seeming innocence of that name always seems to drive him crazy and he grunts, quickly diving in. The tip of his aquiline nose swipes all around your covered folds while his lips and hot breath teases your center.
You’re embarrassingly close already, both the sights and sensations being created between your legs impossible to resist. You simply can’t bring yourself to peel your eyes away as he continues to bring you closer and closer to a soft release.
“Are you close already?” He asks with a smirk, eyes meeting yours.
Before you can respond, his finger presses up against your entrance, pushing in just a little bit and swirling around. You gasp at the feeling, hips naturally pushing down against him in an attempt to encourage him deeper inside.
“Mmm, look at that. You want to be filled so badly, don’t you, coach?” Charlie says, voice low. “You’re so fucking desperate, trying to impale your little virgin cunt further on my finger. You want someone else’s fingers shoved up your pussy, want to cum on fingers other than your own, isn’t that right?”
You nod, chewing your lip while your hips gyrate against his touch. “Y-Yeah, I want i-it.”
His finger pushes up just a little bit more, bathing suit fabric stretching as it’s shoved up inside your quivering arousal. Your back arches and your breath catches in your throat at his movement, suddenly thrust to the edge of climax.
“Charlie...” You breathe. “Please.”
He grins cockily, circling his fingertip inside you while he mouths at your clit and scrapes his teeth across the clothed bud. You cum only a few moments later, groaning shakily as your hips jerk erratically.
Once you’ve ridden it out completely, Charlie pulls away and covers your inner thighs in kisses. You sit up and run your hands through his hair, smiling down at him.
“You’re incredible.”
Charlie smiles, tugging your legs, encouraging you into the shallow water. “C’mere, let me kiss you.”
You allow yourself to slide down into the water, reaching up to wrap your arms around the back of his neck as his lips crash down onto yours. His hands grab your ass and pull you against him, a small growl rumbling through his chest when his erection rubs against your lower stomach.
“Let me touch you, C-Charlie.”
His eyebrows raise and he pulls away, looking into your eyes. “You know the rules, kid...”
“I don’t have to see you to make you feel good. I promise I won’t look, I just...I want to t-touch you. I want to make you cum.”
He inhales sharply, biting his lip as he thinks it over. He can’t pretend that he hasn’t wanted this since he first met you, but the thought of not allowing you to see or touch him until he’s ready to take your virginity is incredibly arousing...
“Alright, but you can’t pull me out of my shorts. Got it?”
You nod eagerly, pressing your lips onto his once again. He scoops you up and walks you over to the underwater bench, setting you down gently. His hand cradles the back of your head, cushioning it from the harsh pool ledge as you pull at the tie of his swim trunks.
His jaw clenches tightly and his eyebrows knit when your hand wraps around the base, a shaky breath leaving his flared nostrils. He keeps his forehead pressed against yours as you begin to stroke him slowly, breath hot on your lips.
“I-Is this okay?” You ask quietly.
He simply nods, back hunching and buttocks clenching as his hips begin to thrust forward in time with your pumps. His eyes squeeze shut, growling and mewling softly with each flick of your wrist.
“Ohhhhh god, Y/N, I...it’s b-been a while since someone’s tttttouched me like this. Your little h-hand ffffeels so nice.”
Your lips pull up into a small smile, flattered that he likes your touch so much. You reach up with your spare hand, spreading it out across the back of his head, pulling him down for another kiss.
Charlie fulfills your silent wish, moving his lips against yours. He disconnects a minute later, a line of sweat gathering at his hairline as his thrusts become more and more desperate and full of need.
“J-Jesus, I’m gonna cum s-soon, can’t last a-any longer.” He groans shakily, reaching down to grab your wrist, halting your touches. “Quick, l-lay back on the d-deck.”
You nod, hopping up out of the water and laying back, allowing enough room for him to get on top of you. His hand moves quickly on his cock as he climbs up and positions himself on top of you.
His hand grips your jaw, tilting your head up while he tugs his shorts down enough to expose his pulsing length. He begins grinding his bare cock against the fabric covering your stomach.
“Look at me, Y/N. I’m gonna--fuuuck--gonna c-cover your belly in m-my hot cum, s-stain your fuuucking b-bathing ssssuit. Are y-you ready?”
Right after you nod, his hips suddenly rut roughly against your stomach and he groans loudly, spurts of warm milky seed spreading across your torso. He snarls, grip tightening around your jaw as he cums all over you. His eyes never close or break your gaze, pupils blown wide with lust and arousal.
Seeing Charlie coming undone above you is a sight you make sure to commit to memory, not wanting to forget the way his face contorted in pleasure, the way his hips bucked against you, the sounds that fell from his pillowy lips.
You’re convinced that there are little other sights more beautiful and erotic than the one you’ve just witnessed.
He lets go of your jaw and tucks himself back into his trunks while his lips leave open-mouthed kisses all over your face and throat. You sigh softly when he pulls away and stands up, already missing his presence on top of you.
“Sorry about the stain.” His eyes dart down to the dark red stain on your suit.
You shake your head, sitting up. “No worries. The chlorine will help.”
Charlie’s eyebrows furrow and you chuckle, standing up in front of him.
“You heard me right, Mr. Barber. I’m swimming along with you tonight. We’ll see how you hold up against a competitor.”
He smirks, reaching around to land a playful swat on your ass. “Try to catch me, coach.”
You gasp as he quickly turns around and leaps into the water, beginning to swim towards the lanes. You laugh, following behind.
“Oh, it is so on!”

You sit alone on a park bench, wearing a heavy black backpack filled with Hammer’s latest invention. He’s here too, more than a mile away, watching you from the shadows. Your task is to do all the talking and distracting; Hammer wants to take the kill shot. You don’t really care, as long as Tony Stark dies for what he did to Natasha.
At midnight exactly, Tony walks up to you, wearing a hoodie, jeans, and his signature sunglasses. However, you know from experience that Jarvis is inside the sunglasses, providing him with information about you and his surroundings.
“It’s a little late to be wearing sunglasses, isn’t it, Stark?” you say, standing up. Hammer lined your backpack with lead so Jarvis can’t see into it, but you’re still nervous.
“You know I have astigmatism,” he says.
“I don’t really care,” you respond. “Take them off.”
He doesn’t need a second warning.
“So, what’s up with you, Y/N?” Tony pockets the sunglasses. “Where have you been lurking all this time?” He stops about ten feet in front of you.
“Just…working through some things,” you reply.
“For six months?” Tony scoffs. “We waited for you to come back.”
“You know I couldn’t do that.” Your jaw clenches. “But for you, Stark? I’d make an exception any day of the week.”
“What’s up with all the theatrics tonight, huh? Would’ve been a lot simpler to have this chat at the Tower,” Tony says.
“I’m not an Avenger anymore.”
“Says who?”
“Says me,” you snap, trying not to let your impatience show. You’re waiting for Hammer’s signal, but he seems to want to take his time. Your eyes drift to the glowing blue arc reactor in the center of Tony’s chest and you put your right hand in your pocket casually.
“Just spit it out, Y/N. Why am I here?”
“You’re here to die, Stark.”
“Well, have at it.” He opens his arms tauntingly and you tense, ready to tackle him to the ground and beat his head inside out.
“You killed Natasha,” you snarl, and his expression changes. But you don’t have time to process it, because suddenly, the watch on your wrist vibrates.
Hammer’s signal.
You take your hand out of your pocket, now holding onto a tiny sensor disk, which you throw at Tony’s chest. It latches onto his arc reactor and powers it down instantly, preventing him from activating his Iron Man suit.
Then you dive to the ground, because Hammer starts blasting away with his rifle.
Tony catches a few bullets in his chest and legs, unable to react to both threats at the same time. He falls onto his back, blood pooling around his body as he gasps for air. You activate Hammer’s suit, which tears out of your backpack, covering your torso and limbs in a thin layer of metal armor.
You climb to your feet, your helmet snapping over your head, and charge towards Tony. But something—or someone—completely blindsides you, sending you skidding in the direction of the carousel.
It looks like a variation of Iron Man, although the suit is smaller and more feminine. The colors are black and red, evoking a pang of familiarity in your chest. You stand again, an eight-inch blade shooting out of your right wrist, and you beckon the Iron Woman (?) to come at you.
She does, but when you swing your blade at her, she blocks it and punches you so hard in the chest you fly back into the carousel and knock a horse completely off its pole. You’re pretty sure you cracked a rib as your breathing sends a stabbing pain up your side. You hang onto a bench to get up, and suddenly the carousel comes to life, lights flashing and music crackling through the speakers.
You’re transported back to the day you were last here with Natasha, when you asked her to be your girlfriend.
Both of your horses are out of sync. When she goes up, you go down, and neither of you can stop laughing. You’re pretty sure you’re the oldest adults on the carousel without kids, but you don’t care.
The way her hair effortlessly blows in the wind and the way her eyes crinkle when she laughs lights up your heart, and you still can’t believe she chose you over everyone else in the world. You’ve never been so in love with another human being before, and you don’t think there will ever be another like her.
When the rides end, you take her hand and lead her to an empty patch of grass in the shade of a tree.
“Natasha, will you go out with me?” you ask, your voice trembling. She nods and brushes her fingers over your cheek. “I promise to keep you safe and love you every day for the rest of my life—”
“Calm down, it’s not a marriage proposal.” Natasha laughs as you sweep her off her feet. “Not yet, anyway.”
“Just preparing.” You kiss her and feel her smile against your lips. You’ve never been happier.
You’re so stuck in your head you don’t even notice the Iron Woman coming after you until she punches you in the face. You stagger back, stunned, as she punches you several more times. The face of your helmet snaps off and you feel your nose bleeding. You slash out with your blade wildly, forcing the Iron Woman to back off.
“Y/N,” the Iron Woman says, and you don’t even care how she knows your name, “You need to stop.”
“Get out of my way.” When you leap towards her, she lifts her foot and kicks you in the chest. You somersault backwards, head over heels, as she retreats. The rotating platform of the carousel does nothing to help your balance and the lights and noise distract your focus. You crouch behind a stationary horse, searching for her amongst the painted animals.
You break the blade off your wrist, poised to throw like a javelin. When the Iron Woman pops out from behind a black horse, you bring your arm back to throw the blade, but she fires from her gun before you can. The bullet bounces off a pole and buries itself in your left cheek.
The pain is like a branding iron as you scream and fall to your knees, the blade slipping out of your fingers. Blood pours out of your mouth, the taste of metal coating your tongue as you gingerly reach in to swipe the burning chunk of lead over your teeth. You finally spit the bullet out, but the pain persists.
The Iron Woman holsters her gun and approaches you, thinking you’re too distracted to notice. But you do, another blade flicking out of your left wrist and you ram it into her thigh as hard as you can. The blade crunches through the plates of her armor, but she elicits no reaction to being stabbed.
“Y/N,” the Iron Woman repeats.
“Just die already!” you scream, withdrawing the blade and trying to stab her again.
The Iron Woman’s helmet slides back and you freeze when you see her face.
It’s Natasha.
Immediately, your anger melts into confusion and happiness.
“H-How…How is this possible?” you stammer, more blood spilling from your lips. “T-They…They told me you died.”
“No.” Natasha shakes her head, kneeling to your level. “But you never came back for me.”
“Because I hurt you—” Hammer had said she was dead, and that Tony—no—you—had killed her.
“I forgive you, Y/N. For all of it.”
“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.” You stumble back, tears and blood mixing on your face.
“Please come back to me, Y/N,” Natasha begs, as your head spins from the turn of events. “I still love you.”
Suddenly, it’s like all of Hammer’s training reverses. Tony was never the one responsible for harming Natasha—you were. And now Tony’s bleeding to death, which was again, your fault. You won’t let this rest on your conscience. You’ve done enough damage and now it’s time to redeem yourself, as little as you can.
“This is all Justin Hammer’s doing,” you say, letting Natasha pull you to your feet. “He’s had me kidnapped for the past six months. He thought I would be able to help him kill Tony, but he’s not going to be successful anymore. Because you weren’t part of the plan.”
Natasha smiles and you feel your heart melt. Whether or not she’ll take you back, you owe this to her.
“He’s about a mile out, west from here. He has no guards—arrogant bastard—it’s just him and his rifle. You go get him and I’ll get Tony,” you say. Natasha nods and flies off. For a moment, you’re filled with jealousy over her suit. How come Tony never made you one?
You make your way off the carousel and find Tony still on the ground. You check his pulse. It’s weak, but there.
“Tony, I’m so sorry,” you say, as a spray of bullet rips through the ground. You grab his arms and pull him to take cover under a bench.
“Y/N?” he mumbles.
“Yeah. I’m sorry. This is all my fault.”
“No…” Tony says, grabbing your hand. “I’m sorry, Y/N. I was a complete asshole to you that day—”
“No, I’m the one who tried to shoot you, for God’s sake—” You rip his shirt into ribbons to wad up against the wounds in his chest and legs. “You’re gonna be okay,” you promise. “It’s Justin Hammer who’s behind all of this.”
“I recognized his work from your suit,” Tony gasps. “It looks like shit.”
“You can tell him that yourself.” You find yourself smiling despite the circumstances. “He wanted my help to end his ultimate rival. He manipulated me into thinking that Natasha was dead and that you were the reason for it—” You pause. “Thank you for taking care of her.”
“It was the least I could do for you.”
“I know she probably won’t want me anyway after all this, but it was good to see her again.”
“She only wants you. It was always you or no one.”
You throw yourself onto Tony when the bullets start again and you feel them bounce off your back and legs. Fortunately, when Hammer made your suit bulletproof, he probably didn’t think it would have to bulletproof against his bullets.
Suddenly, the gunshots stop and the silence is deafening.
When you finally look up, you see Natasha flying over, holding Hammer by the collar.
You don’t even mind when your face splits into a painful smile. “That’s my girl.”
***********************************************************************
Two weeks after Hammer is arrested, Natasha convinces you to come by the Avengers Tower. It’s a strange feeling as you walk in for the first time in over six months. When you left, you’d never thought you’d be back, but here you are. Your only belongings are a single duffel bag with some clothes stuffed inside.
You ride the elevator up to the Avengers’ quarters. You’re a little more wary of the SHIELD agents that pass you, wondering if anyone will double-cross you again, but you remain courteous. You punch in your code to see if it still works and it does, the doors opening.
“Look who’s finally come home.” Tony’s there to greet you and he hugs you tightly.
“How are you feeling?” you ask, still guilty you almost got him killed.
“Good, no thanks to you.”
“Sorry again.”
He waves you off.
“Where’s—” you start, but then you see her. She comes around the corner in a wheelchair. Your heart drops to your feet.
“Things have been a little different since you left,” she says. So that’s why she had no reaction when you had stabbed her at the carousel. She has no feeling left in her legs after your bullet pierced her spine.
“Natasha, I’m…I didn’t know. Shit, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be here.” You turn around, but she rolls into your legs and grabs your hand.
“Please stay,” she says. “Like I told you before, I’m not mad.”
“But you have every right to be.”
“Can we talk?”
You nod numbly and let her lead you back to where your shared bedroom with her was. Nothing inside has changed. In fact, your clothes are still hanging in the closet like you’d never left. You sit on your side of the bed.
“What do you want me to say, Y/N?” Natasha asks.
You shrug. “Call me an asshole for what I did. Tell me you’d never want me back.”
“Okay. You’re an asshole for shooting me and leaving me,” Natasha says without hesitation, and you flinch. But somehow, you find solace in hearing her say the words you’ve played over and over in your head for months. “And yeah, after the whole thing happened, I didn’t think I could ever take you back. But I couldn’t stop thinking about you and told myself if I ever saw you again, I wanted you to know that I forgive you.”
“But I don’t know if I could forgive myself,” you whisper.
“Well, I forgive you, and I think if I can do that, you can, too.” It hurts her to see how much you’ve changed in the past six months. Your face and body are thin from malnourishment and Hammer’s torture. Your eyes are dull and permanently swollen from basically crying every day for six months. Some of your fingers are crooked from not healing correctly and you have scars running up your arms.
She reaches out and touches the puckered mark on your cheek from the bullet. “Besides, we’re kind of even now.”
“Hardly.” You chuckle.
“We can start slow,” Natasha says, putting her hands on your shoulders. “Because I’m not sure what still works down there, anyway.”
You smile, and her heart warms at the sight.
“Can I lie with you?” she asks and you nod, scooping her up and carrying her to the bed. You put her down gently and lie next to her. She pulls you close until your foreheads touch and you close your eyes as you breathe in her familiar scent. “Why did you pick the carousel as the meeting place?” she asks.
“I…I don’t know,” you mumble. “For some weird reason, I thought I’d see you again, at least in my memory. But then I did in real life, too.”
“I’m so glad you came back,” Natasha hums, brushing her lips against yours.
“I’m so glad I did, too.”

AN: The end! :) Fun facts:
-Part 1 was inspired by the scene in X-Men: First Class where Magneto accidentally deflects a bullet into Charles’s spine (which resulted in Charles’s paralysis). -Part 2’s Iron Black Widow suit was inspired by a concept art photo I saw that was cut from Avengers: Endgame. Here’s the link to that post. -Part 3’s carousel scene was inspired by the season 1 finale of Netflix’s Punisher.
