your blog is ok but the whole 'the original' and thinking your influence is all over social media thing is annoying. Being into cannibalism/theology/medieval mysticism/weil/bataille is not original. It was just slightly more original in the early days of tumblr. People were posting about these exact same topics on their blogs in 2013. Even then people probably copied this from earlier social media. You didn't come up with being into these topics and even these specific authors and it is deeply unlikely people are copying you specifically. There were now deleted blogs run by a girls making art about god eating catholicism and so on years ago. Often roughly the same topics, same quoted authors. Older film and literature blogs again the same... because it is an incredibly tired thing to be obsessed by. You can still write an interesting thesis about it but nah. Even with your amount of followers you are not the reason for any of this showing up in gross little meme form. Stereotypical 20s online issues girl interests go through fluctuations in popularity.
i love that you took this much time to write an anonymous ask to me on this. i love that you feel this strongly about it. i also love that you think i feel i invented the concept of theophagy when im writing a thesis on how its existed since the middle ages. please give yourself a round of applause for having zero concept of post irony (assuming you’re here from instagram- the bio “original catholic mystic waif blogger” is ironic. like clearly its ironic since im neither a waif nor catholic. omg).
i've also never claimed that my "influence" is all over social media, what ive said is that me and a bunch of my mutuals were perceived as having started a trend on tumblr in late 2020 that got absorbed into other "aesthetic" trends and that became mainstream. specifically side wound theology was 100% something that me, rotgospels, memesofheresy (that is their instagram handle and not their blog name but their blog is fully escaping me rn), and a couple of other people working/studying theology started posting about in 2021, and suddenly you had blogs posting about woundfucking and side wound summer with 0 idea what it meant. obviously i didnt invent theophagy lmfao holy shit dude

hello, your blog's vibes are absolutely impeccable! I was wondering if you could recommend me some nonfiction reading on eroticism, religion or fear? I'd love to read about any of these topics, but I never really know where to start looking for good theory books or essays, so I usually end up reading fiction instead. any nonfiction recs would be deeply appreciated (and on other topics too if you have particular favorites). have a nice day!
hello! thank you for the kind words♡
hm! some reading might be: - Erotism: Death and Sensuality + Visions of Excess, Bataille - Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs, Deleuze - The Sadeian Woman: And the Ideology of Pornography, Angela Carter - Hurts So Good: The Science and Culture of Pain on Purpose, Leigh Cowart - Eros the Bittersweet, Anne Carson - A Lover's Discourse, Roland Barthes - Uses of the Erotic, Audre Lorde - A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller, 1932-1953 - Foucault's Histor[ies] of Sexuality - Being and Nothingness, Sartre - The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson - Aesthetic Sexuality: A Literary History of Sadomasochism, Romana Byrne - Pleasure Principles: An Interview with Carmen Maria Machado - "The Aesthetics of Fear", Joyce Carol Oates - Recreational Terror: Women and the Pleasures of Horror Film Viewing, Isabel Cristina Pinedo - "On Fear", Mary Ruefle - "In Search of Fear", Philippe Petit - Female Masochism in Film: Sexuality, Ethics and Aesthetics, Ruth Mcphee - Powers of Horror, Julia Kristeva - Hélène Cixous' Stigmata (i am thinking esp of "Love of the Wolf") - Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis - anything from Caroline Walker Bynum.... Wonderful Blood, Fragmentation and Redemption, Holy Feast and Holy Fast - excerpts of Letter From a Region in my Mind, James Baldwin - Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche (re: Christian morality, death of God) - Waiting for God, Simone Weil - The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus - Modern Man in Search of a Soul, Carl Jung - "The Genesis of Blame", Anne Enright
do know as well that Lapham's Quarterly has issues dedicated entirely to these subjects you've mentioned: eros, religion, fear ! there's also this wonderful ask from @rotgospels on biblical horror theory
other non-fic i will always rec: - "On Self-Respect", Joan Didion - Illness as Metaphor + Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag - The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning, Maggie Nelson - "The Laugh of the Medusa", Hélène Cixous - Ways of Seeing, John Berger - The Faraway Nearby, Rebecca Solnit - The Body in Pain, Elaine Scarry some non-fic things i've read lately: - "Mary Shelley's Obsession with the Cemetery", Bess Lovejoy - "Horror Lives in the Body", Megan Pillow - "The Cruel Myth of the Suffering Artist", Patrick Nathan - "The Rub of Rough Sex", Chelsea G. Summers - "The Lost Art of Memorizing Poetry", Nina Kang - "The problem with English", Mario Saraceni

where should i start with reading about female mystics?
@rotgospels made this post with some recs for books about medieval women mystics, and she knows a lot more about the topic than i do. @givemearmstopraywith probably has some cool resources as well, if you can find them.

this article says all the things i was worried would be true about the green knight. i will only grab one quote from it:
“This is what we lose when we decide that a medieval text does not do a good enough job of interrogating its own themes.”

This is a weird question but do you have a favorite book /about/ the Bible? Idk I've been really into reading different interpretations of religious stories and you have the vibes of someone with an interesting religious reading list
hi dear! not a weird question and i'm honored you came to me, and honored that i have those vibes. but alas i cannot be of much help with this as i've not read any books about the bible.
i'm gonna refer you to some of my mutuals who i think might potentially be able to answer this better (hope u guys don't mind the tag + of course no need to answer!<3) @rotgospels @sidewounds @cithaerons i also just generally recommend them for theology-esque blogs!
also, i wont tag them as they aren't a mutual but @/beguines posts a lot of passages from books/writings about the bible i believe, and religion as a whole. i also recommend them in general for theology!
also, any other mutuals or followers of mine, if you happen to have a book to recommend please feel free to do so!

do u have any book suggestions that focus on mary magdalene? <3
I'm going to redirect you to @hymnsofheresy and @rotgospels for this one (if neither of them mind!) as off the top of my head I believe both are more well-read than I am concerning Mary Magdalene.
