Summary: It’s 2001. Dean Winchester is a detective within the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department. Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” is on every radio of the country, the Cubs haven't won the World Series in almost a century, and Georges W. Bush just got elected President of the United States. Dean has been dating Cas, his high school sweetheart, for almost ten years and together they raise a daughter, Claire, who’s about to turn 1.

Life, all things considered, is good.

It’s 2021. Dean Winchester wakes up from 20 years in a coma after taking a bullet into the head on a case gone wrong. 9/11 happened almost 20 years ago, the world is on fire, the Cubs won the World Series five years ago, and Bon Jovi put out 6 albums since “It’s my Life”. Dean’s baby daughter just turned 21, his brother married an incredible woman and has two kids he doesn’t know, and his boyfriend... Well, Cas is still by his side, but there’s stuff he’s keeping from Dean.

Of course, this would be enough to fill Dean’s plate if he didn’t also have to figure out who put a bullet into his head, 20 years back.

Author’s note: I know I said I would take some time off once "Glory Hallelujah" was finished, but I stopped writing for 2 months straight and then my mind started wiring.

This story has been hugely inspired by a French tv show that started to air in 2013 and finished in 2016. Though I took some storylines and aspects from the show, there also are some stuff I changed or flat-out created for this story. If you're interested in watching the series, it's called "Falco" and is probably available to watch with English subtitles somewhere (though it's one of the small numbers of tv shows that completely tore me apart and made me cry like a baby when it ended).

Going from there, if you do enough research, you'll probably find out that (spoilers) Falco dies at the end of the show. That's one of the things I didn't want, so rest easy: Dean isn't going anywhere in this story.

Contrary to pretty much all of my previous stories, I don't have a fix schedule for this, and a weekly, fixed update day is very unlikely. I'll try to update at least once every two or three weeks, but you guys know I'll get to the finish line anyway.

In real life though, Castiel Novak and Dean Winchester are both professional soccer players with the same position in concurrent teams. It would be complicated enough as it is, but Dean and Cas have also been a couple for several years, hiding their relationship from the public and homophobia in the world of soccer while living in Europe away from their families. Can they make it through another season without cracking? Preview: “OFFSIDE?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘OFFSIDE’?!” Castiel yells as the linesman waves his stupid little flag, indicating that the goal he just scored doesn’t actually count. It was a fucking magnificent goal- the ball was coming from Balt on the left side and Cas managed to get rid of three defenders on his own before he put the ball right into the top corner. A Novak special, if you will. “It means we have one more chance to beat your ass,” a voice he knows too well fake-whisper next to him. Castiel turns around and immediately slams into the body of his opponent of the day- Atletico Madrid’s number 11, the one and only Dean Winchester. “Fuck off,” he says as he and Dean size each other up, both of their forehead coming to rest against the other. Dean wears a black jersey, indicating that he’s not playing home today- despite the Santiago-Bernabéu stadium and the Metropolitano only being 15 minutes away from each other. Cas is wearing his favorite jersey- the white and gold one, his home jersey, sporting number 7. Winchester flashes a smile at him, one of those cocky ones that make Cas’ blood boil. But right before he does something about it, the referee is standing next to them and firmly pushes Dean off Cas. “Take a breather, you two, or I’m carding you both!” Cas trots away, still fuming, but not wanting to add on to the pile and potentially ruin the night by getting a red card. Half an hour later and the referee’s whistle signals the end of the game, with the win going to Cas’ adversaries. 1-2, Atletico takes the win. Winchester scored twice. Cas goes back to the dressing room angry at himself and the team. It’s only two hours later when Dean and Cas, back in the apartment they’ve been sharing for several years in downtown Madrid, settle their dispute on the counter of their kitchen. “I wanted to- ahh- punch you in the face,” Cas whines as Dean puts both of his legs on his shoulder, allowing him to hit that sweet spot right there inside of Cas. “Fuck, Dean-” “Yeah, you did?” Dean smiles, that same cocky smile he did on the field. “I wanted to kiss you so bad, shame the ref interrupted us honestly.” Cas can’t help the laugh that escapes him, right until it transforms into a whine because goddammit, Dean is too damn good at finding all the right moves to drive him crazy. The sound his cock makes as he pushes and pulls into Cas shouldn’t sound so hot, but neither should the way Cas can feel Dean’s heavy balls slap against his hole. “I swear if you don’t bend me in half and fuck me like a man already I’m going to go insane,” Cas snarls, right before Dean kisses him sloppily, all tongues and teeth. “Mhm, is that a request or an order, Novak?” Dean smiles against Cas’ lips as he pistons his hips faster into the warmth of Cas’ ass. “I wanna feel it when I train tomorrow- ah holy shit,” Cas whines as Dean complies, folding him in half over the table and letting his cock drag in and out of Cas’ puffy asshole. It barely takes them both a minute to come after that. Dean carries a half-asleep Cas to the shower and takes care of them both, before they head to bed. Together, like they’ve been doing for four years since they both came to Europe to play soccer. Together, but not for the camera, for which they’re both playing the game of being enemies that hate each other. But tonight, right before Cas falls asleep, the only thing he can feel is Dean, all warm and here against him. He brushes a kiss underneath Cas’ earlobe, that secret spot he loves so much, and hums an “I love you”, that Cas sleepily answers with a “me too” that barely sounds like something. It’s been their lives for the past four years. But Cas wonders if they have it in them to go on like this for a fifth.

One of my favorite fics of all time is Evangelist by @valleydean. It's really enemies to friends to lovers but the enemies part becomes friends pretty quickly because they are deeply obsessed with each other. One of the classics if you haven't read it is To Build a Home. Childhood friends who broke up and find themselves back in each other’s life. It is very angsty but they have a lifelong friendship so you get a lot of childhood and teenage friendship moments. If I may self recommend, I just wrote Can't Fight the Moonlight in which they are in this post canon partnership and both want to add sexual intimacy but the partnership is soft so you get some really fun platonic intimacy. It's not AU, obviously, but may have something of what you want. Seraph by @dothraki-shieldmaiden is a superhero au where they are friends and roommates to lovers. It has great world building. More than Kisses by @friendofcarlotta is a friends to lovers epistolary romance. Dean and Cas are pen pals and they share an absolutely gorgeous emotional intimacy. Tiamatv has a few that fit the bill. I'm gonna mention Marchen because I love the world built in that one. Dean Winchester is a prince locked in a tower. So, I read a lot of fic. And I’ve been wanting to make rec lists but a problem with reading a lot of fic is that after a while I tend to forget what happened and fics blend together in my mind RIP. But I want to start at least rec’ing my “recent reads” so that’s what this is: stuff I’ve read throughout this month. Okay, let's do this! Divided into two sections, canon-verse and AUs, and listed by word count.

About Five Times The Distance by KelpietheThundergod [ 70k, rated E ] - It's been months since Michael unexpectedly let Dean go, but he's still dealing with the mental and physical repercussions, some of which have turned out to be permanent. This case fic follows Dean and Cas as they develop their relationship and establish intimacy. Dean is so clingy. I cried a lot.  

Darkest Roads verse by chaoticdean [ 63k, rated E ] - Dean and Cas go undercover as a couple going through therapy, in order to catch a monster that specifically targets couples dealing with issues, feeding on their distress, anger, and pain. Feelings left untold come to the surface, as they do. 

It's safe to sleep inside his skin by kathscradle [ 13k, rated E ] - Dean just really wants to get inside Cas, like burrow under his ribs and make a home there. Close is never close enough, etc, etc. 

The Council Of Charlie Bradbury by FallenAngelOfThursday [ 13k, rated T ] - Cas is back from the Empty, and Dean is struggling to accept that there's finally peace in the world. watching the camera footage of the dungeon scene on repeat probably isn't helping. Cas gives Dean space to heal, but is lonely. Sam decides to bring Charlie in to help these two finally get together. 

a sparrow with broken wings by Anonymous [ 11k, rated T ] - Cas dies, and Dean stops eating, and he keeps on dreaming. Dean’s grief over Cas’s death manifests as a severe eating disorder. It’s heavy but it ends happy.

3 hr 33 min (221 miles) by NightChanghes [ 3k, rated G ] - A little over a year ago, the Empty took Castiel. Nearly 5 months ago, it spit him back out. Dean is still mourning.

Chasing Feathers by junkyardheart [ 2k, rated G ] - The missing scene from Faith 1x12. Dean learns that he's dying, and ruminates on life, death and everything he wishes he had the time to fix. Faith!dean feels. Dying boy I love youu!

million reasons by casdoms [ 2k, rated M ] - oh dean’s mommy issues<3 anyway, set in s12, Dean’s feeling a lot about Mary coming back, and Cas comforts him. 

Time for a gay wedding by fellshish [ 2k, rated M ] - thee 30k dean fic ! Is Cas gay? Clearly there’s only one way to find out. Dean proposes. Truly chaotic dean energy that only @fellshish can capture.  

Sex Should Be Fun by things_renew_themselves [ 2k, rated M ] - Castiel and Dean speak about April and Castiel's sexual encounter. Years later, they speak about having sex with each other. 

hug-o-meter by Emeraldcas [ 1k, rated G ] - Dean wants to hug Cas because of course he does, so maybe he'll just ask him and see what happens.

until my darkness goes by CherryBlossomSprings [ 1k, rated G ] - Dean has been sober before. He was clean for a whole year in purgatory. Not that he had that much choice, liquor is unsurprisingly hard to come by in monster heaven. And he managed a few weeks when The Mark was at its worst. He can do it again. No, he has to do it again.

A Cat in Hell’s Chance by thesebrokenwings [ 1k, rated T ] - Dean adopts a cat and Cas has a hard time adjusting. Fellas, are you ever jealous of the cat?!

Meathead by ValandraWrites [ 92k, rated E ] - Professor Cas and body-builder Dean meet at a gym. Dating and BDSM shenanigans ensue. **There’s one kink in the tags that might scare some off, it almost did for me but, it’s only in one scene and very minor. The story overall is really good.  

sons and daughters by foolondahill17 [ 77k, rated M ] - the sequel to Silver Linings, so you’ll have to read that first. Silver Linings follows a year in the life of Dean Winchester. Dean’s bi: sexual and polar. He’s got a string of hospitalizations under his belt. He’s a felon. He’s got a secret. 

A Judicious Application of Free Will by Annie D [ 57k, rated E ] - Dean lives the simple life in Lawrence, running the family business at Winchester Hardware. When Castiel moves into the neighborhood, they strike up a friendship that has the chance to become something more. But before that can run its course, the secrets of Castiel’s past catch up with them both, and their whole world changes. Truly a wild ride!
