Bradley had never been one for restless energy, but it seemed that it had followed him home, like a stray dog, tracking mud through the carpet, sitting in bed with him. He wonders if that has to do with having shared a near death experience with his godfather about a week and a half ago. These days he drifts off to sleep well past three, according to the old radio clock by his bed.

The faint knock on the door startles him, though. It’s day nine of not really being able to sleep and of course it can only be one person. As Bradley rolls off of his bed and groans, the radio clock marks 2:43 AM. He moves around barefoot to open the door and finds his father on the other side, wearing that usual expression of his, gentle but amused.

“Can’t sleep, Chickadee?”

The pet name always makes Bradley snort in return, as he stretches his back by arching backwards.

“How’d you even know?”

Somehow Nick Bradshaw, Goose, always knew everything. Even if he didn’t let others know that he knew. He always knows; something about having been a RIO and needing eyes everywhere.

“I think,” His father starts, arms folding over his chest. “If you rolled and tossed more, you’d jump out the window, kiddo. Floorboards are creaking under your bed.” It’s not an admonishment, but his way of bringing up the fact that he knows his son all-too-well, and that for the past week and a half he’s probably been listening to him toss and turn like an insomniac pancake.

“Well, why are you awake?” Rooster retorts playfully, instead of addressing his own thing, and Goose shoots back a bashful smile on the same wavelength. It turned out that two Navy men with their own share of issues living under the same roof had their own sort of understanding. But Goose and Rooster also happened to be father and son and very close friends, mind you.
