We know that in addition to knocking on Sunny's door, Kel has also regularly tried to call him at home (and apparently talked to his mom from time to time).
We also know that Sunny's mom has an answering machine.
This made me imagine that sometimes, when his mom wasn't home, Sunny would sit in front of the answering machine and listen to Kel ramble a bit on the tape before hanging up.

because I've seen a couple posts like this recently:
Do not be discouraged if you see someone with the same idea for a fic as you! Because that's what we want--the same exact stories, over and over, through the unique lens of each writer! That's the beauty of fanfiction: you can read the same story, slightly to the left, as many times as possible!
So please, post that fic that has the same premise as someone else. Write your version of it, and rest assured knowing that at the very least, one person will be delighted to find the same kind of story as one they just finished!

I’m sad so I’m going to write some headcanons for what Mari and Hero’s life would’ve been like if nothing had gone wrong. This is going to be a series, because I have a lot of feelings about it lmao.
The Proposal:
They get married early. Like early early. Like still in college early. They’re still in their first year when Hero proposes
Hero and Mari ended up at different colleges and the distance between them started growing more and more. They were getting into fights, and it seemed nearly impossible to communicate
During their worst fight Mari in a moment of frustration says she doesn’t even know why they’re still together and hangs up to have a good cry
She feels awful about it of course she wants to take it back immediately after, but she thinks the damage is done
She’s been impossible to deal with recently and there’s no way Hero still loves her. She isn’t the girl he fell in love with anymore
Her roommates normally give her space during her after-fight emotional meltdowns, but this time they pull her out of the bed and to the window
Hero is standing in front of her dorm building staring up at her window. When Mari comes to it, he waves and she waves back
Going down the stairs she starts to build up the courage to get through the break up. She starts thinking about how they’re going to tell the others, how she’s going to try to have to live without her soulmate, but more than anything how she has no one to blame but herself for this mess
Mari isn’t able to walk out the door in the end She can’t bring herself to walk to the end of their relationship. It doesn’t matter, Hero meets her halfway and walks into the lobby
She starts talking before he has a chance, telling him that she understands and that it’s okay and on and on until he steps into her space
Mari struck silent unable to speak but unable to walk away
And then Hero starts talking
He tells her about the day they first met. When they were three years old and he had climbed over their shared fence into her backyard
He tells her about the day Sunny was brought home from the hospital, when she had sat very still on the couch with a squirming infant in her lap, and he had watched her smile.
Hero tells her of a thousand little moments of loving her, dozens of snapshots of a life they had shared together
Mari waits for it to end, for him to say that it was the end of that shared existence
And then he gets down on one knee. He doesn’t have a ring, but he still has love for her, and it’s more valuable than the Hope Diamond
Mari doesn’t answer with words, but she assumes he gets the answer from her throwing herself into his arms and kissing him until they’re both breathless

Okay so I was thinking about Sally the other day and her place in all of this.
So Hero and Kel's mom dies right after Sally is born. It's bad and it's messy. Their father is pretty distraught from the whole thing and Hero might just go off the rails a little bit right at first (Her murderer is another one of his three kills) so the people who end up taking care of Sally right at the start of her life are mostly Kel and Mari.
The other three are not to be trusted to take care of baby. Sunny would accidentally leave her somewhere, Aubrey would try to start training the infant to kill, and Basil, shockingly, would just get too anxious. Mari and Kel are the only choices
It's honestly a good trial run for when Mari eventually decides she's ready to have kids (She and Hero have already said that they never will, but no one else in their administration knows that) because she still manages to hold her power with an iron fist in one hand while also holding an infant sally in the other. She will sit in meetings with her capos and others to talk business, and anyone who stares too long at the little girl who is using Mari's family ring as a teething toy is demoted swiftly and silently.
Kel takes care of Sally in short bursts. He's still grieving his mother, but he feels like he's the only one that remembers Sally even exists. He doesn't really know how to take care of her though, so he mostly just watches what Mari does and copies her when Mari absolutely can't watch her. It's enough though that Sally starts to give gummy little smiles every time she sees Kel
After he's done getting his vengeance, Hero slips easily into the caretaker role like he always did. He's moving a little stiffer and he stares off into space a little more, but he dotes on Sally. Their father disappears shortly after this (Of his own volition, he left a note) so Hero and Mari unexpectedly sort of end up with a child of their own
They do make one distinction from how they were raised though- Sally isn't allowed to know about their actual business. Not at all. Anyone who even hints at it to her will be taking a long walk off a short pier (The one in the hidden part of the park that no one knows about )
Mari and Hero aren't entirely sure why they chose to make things that way. Maybe it was wanting to do better than what they had, maybe it was fear of Sally turning out the same way as them. Regardless, she is kept in the dark
Sally grows up in the bakery and beloved by her extensively large family, but she always feels like she's missing something. She's tried to investigate, to see if there's something no one is telling her, but Hero and Mari are always there to remind her that she doesn't need to know anything except that her family would do anything they had to when it comes to keeping her safe and happy. It's enough until the day it isn't.

Hunter wasn’t sure how long he ran.
He wasn’t even really thinking about running, he just knew he couldn’t breathe. Everything was just too close. The walls of the house, the pale hand of the owl lady, and above all that cape. That stupid cape that he had loved so much. He had run out of the house, not to get away, but because he had hoped that there would be air outside. There wasn’t. Running probably hadn’t helped, but when had Hunter ever helped himself? He could only make things worse.
