summary: a snake beastman isn't very common. however, not many people understand the fact that there isn't just one type of snake.
notes: back to talking about my boys <333 i kinda ran out of ideas on what to write here though,,,

it wasn't often that kali yuhebi was called a freak to his face. it was rare, but there was always that small possibility that it would happen. that chance had gone down since entering night raven college, but it often peaked during the beginning of the school year when the freshman arrived.
"a snake beastman," they would gasp as kali slithered down the hall. "are they a cobra? maybe they're venomous!"
there was a time when kali would pause in his tracks. he would let the words of his fellow classmates ring in his ears because what else was he supposed to do?
he would accept their ideas of him. he would let them think the way they did because he had no real way of changing them.
but he was none of those things they thought he was.
he wasn't a cobra. just an indian python.
he wasn't venomous. no one in his family was, either.
even in the land of pyroxene he heard these words. he grew up with whispers of the snakes of the forest. he grew up with the foreboding tale of children disappearing into the forest, falling victim to the snakes that swallowed them whole.
his parents always told him to pay them no mind. "it will pass," they claimed, rubbing their hands along his back as he sobbed and sobbed. his little fangs poked at his lips as he babbled on about the words they endured.
"we don't do that!" he cried out all those nights ago.
"we know, we know," they would reply in earnest.
their words never did soothe him. maybe it was because, on those quiet nights when he was curled up in bed, he would hear his mother muffle her cries and his father mutter those same words he would say to him.
from then on, kali... didn't know how to feel anymore. he had grown numb to the words and, after witnessing his parents experience the very same feelings he used to have, he was obligated to be strong for them just as they were, right?
well, here he was, doing his damndest to be strong for his folks back home, and yet. he can't... he can't be strong like his father or put up a face all the time like his mother. every word he heard when he first arrived at NRC shot through him like a bullet, piercing through his heart and soul.
and it remained that way until he found himself entangled with the (soon-to-be) mighty duo of savanaclaw.
"i'm back," kali called as he slithered into leona's room. ruggie greeted them with a sly grin and a nod of his head before turning back to the piles upon piles of laundry he had been tasked with sorting out. leona merely let out a grumble, his eyes still shut tight and his body still curled up in bed.
"you can just put the bags over there," ruggie stated, nodding over to the table clear of trinkets. kali hummed in response, carefully maneuvering their tail around the clumps of clothes strewn about the floor.
"...the new freshmen are interesting, aren't they?" kali muttered under his breath, cursing the way their lisp made their words sound pathetic, and beginning to pull the contents of the bag out onto the desk. ruggie seemed to pause in his task, the sound of ruffling cloth stopping for a moment.
"are they?" he finally said after a brief moment of silence. "i haven't met them yet, so..."
"mhm," kali merely hummed.
"...they did it again, huh?" ruggie assumed, nodding to himself when kali only responded in silence. "honestly, kali, you gotta make a decision."
"about what?"
"either don't be bothered by them or do something to shut them up," leona chimed in suddenly. he had sat up from his bed, his eyes droopy as a light yawn escapes his lips. "you do this every year. complainin' about the little freshies but you don't bother to do anything about it. hearing you whine about them is gettin' pretty old."
"is it?" kali pauses for a moment, his hands clutching onto one of the shirts he had picked up from the ground.
"...you're a real piece of work, kali," ruggie huffed, catching a different shirt leona had tossed at him from the bed. "how can a cobra like you let everyone just step all over them?"
"it's pathetic," leona hissed, hiding under the covers when ruggie turned to glare at him.
while the two seemed to silently bicker with each other, kali couldn't help but smile. sure, the words were harsh and to the average person, they would be rather insulting. but to kali, someone who had only ever been told sugarcoated truths, their words were comforting. it was strange, but he appreciated the straightforwardness of leona and ruggie's advice.
and he knew, deep down, they were right. he was strong, he knew that much. why else would he be here in NRC, in savanaclaw, in a friend group consisting of a royal kingscholar?
why else would he still be here?

the sound of chattering heartslabyul students was one that jaki always looked forward to. despite being a "veteran member" of heartslabyul, as cater loved to deem him, he didn't have a spot amongst the rest of the dorm.
there was trey clover, the ever-reliable vice housewarden that the dorm turned to in times of need. also, his baking skills are unparalleled.
there was cater diamond, the approachable upperclassman that almost no one hated amongst the dorm. sure, his obsession of magical could get out of hand sometimes, but it was always part of his charm.
jaki... did not belong with them. he had a role, sure, but not one that painted him in the best light.
out of the three third years, he was seen as the last one you would want to talk to. he was seen as the most threatening member of heartslabyul, other than riddle, of course.
and at this point, he was used to it. hailing from the valley of thorns, he didn't fit the usual image the rest of heartslabyul has for the dorm's veterans.
"never be alone with tewolgu," he often heard in the halls. "you won't ever be the same if you do."
he could only guess where this rumor came from. he could only assume it was some first year that had found him eating once with trey and cater. he wouldn't doubt it.
his mask provided some protection, but it was only a matter of a time until he needed to take it off. he hated those moments. he hated it. he hated how he needed to be on edge every time he took it off because of the unpredictability of nrc students.
when trey and cater had invited him out that day, he thought he could make it quick. he thought it was just going to be an outing where they would pick up food and go somewhere else to eat. at least, that's what he hoped.
but when he was dragged into the cafeteria and into a table with the two third-years, he could only swallow his fears when they expected him to begin eating.
he tried to keep his mask on at first, slipping food into his mouth from underneath it. it didn't last long, though, when cater quickly pointed out the odd eating habit.
he doesn't even remember how his mask came off in the first place. maybe it was because cater was good at convincing him. or maybe it was trey who had a silver tongue. but in the end, it came off.
his cracked and torn lips were the first to be seen. then it was his oversized jagged teeth. his jaw ached but he paid no mind to it.
he heard the whispers first. then he heard trey and cater. whatever they said was beyond him until they helped place his mask back on his face. and soon after that, he was escorted back to heartslabyul, the two third-years apologizing each step of the way.
he was glad they didn't turn away from him after that. what he wasn't glad for was the way heartslabyul began to distance themselves from him until he found himself alone.
all alone at an unbirthday party because he didn't want to subject the others to his face.
"beware of tewolgu," he often heard. "else he devours every part of you until no trace is left behind."
but, hey, at least he got to admire the flowers his underclassmen so tenderly painted the day before.
