The idea of Peeta and Katniss slowly becoming more socially disconnected with the people they had to pretend to be before and during the war.
A new generation of kids are born, and maybe theyâre taught something of what happened before their time, but maybe theyâre too young to have learned about it in school. Or maybe, they just didnât care too much to remember, maybe theyâve just never seen pictures of The Mockingjay. Or maybe Katniss has outgrown the image of that scared 17-year-old girl.
Whichever way it is, the kids donât know, and donât really care. When people come in from across the country, asking where they could meet âThe Mockingjayâ, the adults ignore them.
When they ask a kid, they just blink. âWho?â
âKatniss Everdeen.â They might try.
These kids have never heard of a Katniss Everdeen. And besides, their parents told them never to talk to weird strangers!! They run away, and go to tell Mrs. Mellark about the weird person they met.

Katniss and Peeta each willing to die so the other can have a future with someone else.
Katniss and Peeta each wanting the other to make a family even though they won't be a part of it.
Katniss and Peeta each finding happiness in the idea of the other being happy even if they won't be alive to see it.
Their love is so selfless.

I think that Peeta was onto something about us destroying one another and letting some decent species take over. Because something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its childrenâs lives to settle its differences. You can spin it any way you like. Snow thought the Hunger Games were an efficient means of control. Coin thought the parachutes would expedite the war. But in the end, who does it benefit? No one. The truth is, it benefits no one to live in a world where these things happen.
this quote is very seldomly mentioned but to me itâs one of the most significant of the whole series. in my opinion, this right here is katnissâ overall takeaway of the whole series.

Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head and close your eyes
And when they open, the sun will rise
Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you
Can't stop thinking how we almost lost both of them in Mockingjay ): I just want them to have peace.

I think itâs interesting to hypothesize their dynamic in the arena. I donât think the star crossed lovers would happen (0 chemistry and emotional pull), but they would most definitely form an alliance. And in Book 1 she reflected on that âwhat-ifâ more than once, which is natural, because the games and the arena are the dramatized and more harrowing version of what they experience in the woods. She always says misses her hunting partner though, not him. Which is interesting, because with Peeta Katniss doesnât want Peeta to live for strategic reasons. Even before he was wounded and they formed an alliance, she did not want the kind boy who saved her life to die.
And I honestly think in any reaping situation, Gale would make it far but wonât win. He would be the Foxface. And if it was Katniss and Gale in the arena, it would be like Haymitch and Mayslie and theyâd split up at some point because they donât want to come face-to-face. And if they come face-to-face, Katniss wouldnât feel the desperation for them both to live and pull out the berries like she did for Peeta.
iâve seen some people say that if Gale was in the arena with Katniss, and it got down to the two of them, that he would try to kill her. And although i donât like Gale, i have to defend him on this one because i feel like he would absolutely not kill her in that situation.
I donât think Gale actually loved Katniss in a romantic way, but he definitely cared for her a lot and did love her platonically, so in this situation i think he would let her be the one to go home. He knew Prim and her mother needed her, and yes his family also needed him, but Hazelle didnât have a breakdown (as far as we know) like Katnissâ mother, so she was still running the house, they wouldnt need Gale in the way Katnissâ family needs her. If Gale had died and Katniss went home, obviously Katniss would hunt and bring the Hawthorneâs game (and vice versa) but Prim and her mother COMPLETELY rely on Katniss, and Gale knows this. So no Gale would not kill her, he would let her go home.

gale is so insane for saying this with his whole chest. like itâs true that peeta was a threat to katnissâs life and katniss said that killing peeta would be like âshooting another of the capitolâs mutts,â but as readers we knew she was saying that from a place of hurt. and youâd think gale, being her best friend and closest confidant, would also see this, but instead he offers to kill peeta unprompted and unprovoked. peeta who is only deadly because of extreme psychological and physical torture.
and it just further reminds me that haymitch was the only person that was there for peeta in d13 đ„șđ (with no fault towards katniss, she was depressed and traumatized and thought she lost him forever)
