It was love at first sight when I chanced upon @littleroguecoffee‘s Soft Scrambled Eggs with Truffle Cream & Ikura while mindlessly scrolling IG one day when it just opened. The temptation was so strong I went the following day 😅 (I could never say no to ikura 🐟🥚and eggs🥚) The Melbourne-inspired cafe had a relaxed and airy vibe which I liked, and I appreciated the thought put into making the place sustainable and neighbourhood-friendly. There’s a kids’ play area right in the middle of the cafe (currently closed - understandably), bicycle parking at the front (oogling at the ‘chio’ bikes) and a community library where people can exchange books. Furniture are upcycled from @hocksiong Grub-wise, it is definitely tasty and worth the price. My scrambled eggs were worth the trip, and dessert was beautifully presented. Staff were also friendly and polite. I could easily spend a few hours here, sipping on my coffee and thinking about nothing. It’s the kind of place that is made for the community in mind and made for comfort, unlike the avalanche of pretty cafes made for the gram and tastes meh. “Her Kiao”, or Teochew fish dumpling, usually plays a supporting role in a bowl of fishball noodles. At Lucky Her Kiao, these plump ingots of joy take centre stage with a variety of fillings (scallop, squid, salmon) apart from the traditional pork. I travelled all the way to the Balestier area to pick some up for my upcoming bowl of birthday mee sua 🍜 I was greeted by the chirpy owner James - barefoot and covered from head to toe in flour😁 James comes with solid credentials - his whole family run the branches of Song Kee fishball noodles around Singapore, and James decided to focus on just making her kiao after more than 10 years running his dad’s Toa Payoh stall. I could tell he has a lot of passion (he looked right at home covered in flour lol) and pride in his handmade her kiao, taking effort to explain to me how to store them, where to look for recipes on how to cook them - amidst answering the non-stop calls🤳, handing over deliveries and tallying up my purchases. James’ is the only standalone shop in Singapore selling handmade her kiao, and they really look different from the commercial ones - they look plump and tantalizing, to the point my mum was drooling at the sight of the raw dumplings. Apart from her kiao, James also offers fish noodles, meatballs, crab tau pok, etc. all perfect for the next hotpot dinner, or a bowl of home-cooked noodles. Thankful that we have local food heroes like James keeping our food heritage alive, true artisans in their craft. Came across @indocinfood on IG and was drawn to its attractive presentation and good reviews, especially for its @miebianbian handmade bakmie ( I can never resist anything with pork lard😆). And authentic Indonesian Chinese food isn't that common in SG, so we ordered their best dishes to try for lunch. I must say their delivery packaging and food presentation is one of the best I have come across. Their food got the thumbs up even from my fussy mum. One packet of bakmie is not enough - order two! Nice that it came with an onsen egg. The Nasi Campur Ayam portion is good enough for two, the chicken leg was huge and we enjoyed the side dishes. The sweet potato bobicin balls were crispy and addictive; prune lapis was moist and not too sweet - definitely a winner. Not only are @ahhuateochewnoodle fishballs and veggie rolls handmade, even the care message is hand-drawn by Ah Hua’s daughter Jean 😄 I would label the fishballs as artisanal, and they are about the only fishballs my fussy mum will eat. Ah Hua offers a variety of noodles from the usual mee pok, mee kia to their signature mee tai mak and my fave - dry mee sua. They always bring comfort to us during no dine-in periods, cos’ that is the only time when they offer delivery 😆 So getting a bowl of artisanal noodles all the way from the West is a treat for an Eastie. Dragon Boat Festival is one of my favourite events cos’ I absolutely lurrvvve rice dumplings😍 This year we went for @amelia_carrot_cake after I saw it on IG, and it’s one of the best dumplings we have had so far. A silver lining from the current no dine-in rule is that I get to have a preview tasting of Bistrot Étroit, a quaint Japanese-French diner that I am still trying to get a seat at. Owner-Chef Doi manages everything himself, from ordering, managing reservations, cooking, serving to cleaning. I had the red wine beef curry rice while mum went for the lobster bisque curry rice. Super happy I also managed to get a loaf of Chef's ultra-limited brioche (only 5 available daily and no reservations allowed). My first spoonful of the beef curry was a memorable surprise - I initially thought I was biting into a piece of well-stewed carrot, until I realised there is only meat (beef tongue) in Chef's curry. As a Japanese curry lover (I do set aside time every Japan trip to visit the best curry restaurants), it was one of the most tender and flavourful Japanese curry I have tasted. I could also feel the oil oozing out like wagyu between mouthfuls. I enjoyed it so much I clapped my hands just like at the end of a good performance when I finished my meal (mum thought I had gone bonkers lol). As for the brioche, I made mushroom soup and a humble egg mayonnaise to accompany the next morning. It was delish & satisfying. Beyond the food, I could taste the effort put in by and the pride of the chef, his dream of owning his own restaurant, and giving it his best to ensure his customers leave with happy bellies. It's definitely not easy to run a one-man show, hence a longer-than-usual post to show my appreciation and to remember this experience. Hopefully, I will finally snag a seat at Bistrot Étroit soon.
