I think the obsession with having been “born this way” largely stems from the idea that you need to be “innocent” to be guiltless.
If something is weird then you need to have no control over it, otherwise it would be mandatory to fix it. If I said that I had control over my stimming and could stop it at any time, people would request I do so. Not for my comfort but for theirs. If I said that I had control over my gender and could be something binary or maybe even cis, people would request I do so. If I said that I have control over my sexuality and could make myself heterosexual, people would request I do so. If I said I could control my attraction and could make myself monogamous, people would request I do so. If I said that I could control my disability and could choose to stop a flair up in its tracks, people would request I do so. They would never ask out of the goodness of their hearts, they would always be asking because I was annoying, concerning, distracting, or inconveniencing them.
Diversity is sometimes only tolerated if you have no control. If you have control, rules will be made to stop it. Hair will be straightened, clothes will be standardized, languages will be shushed, interests will be squashed, weight will be lost, and so on and so on and so on. Proving that we were born this way replaces the more obvious, that we’re okay this way. I don’t need to be a helpless victim of my differences to be forgiven for them. My differences aren’t crimes.

I'm just considering human in this since to mean Homo sapiens sapiens, as my own vampire 'type (blutpir) is basically like a different species or genus of hominid--they don't reproduce in a normal sense so it's hard to classify them as a particular species or genus. So I chose option two.
I find myself curious, so - to my fellow vampires, whatever kind of vampire you may be, do you consider yourself-as-vampire to be human as well, or completely separate from humanity? Not in the sense of “I have a vampire kintype, but I’m also human,” but rather in the sense of “if I was physically my vampire self and not in my current body, I would/would not consider myself to be human”.
Please feel free to elaborate on your thoughts and feelings about this in tags/reblogs; I find it an interesting discussion in-source, and I’m curious if others have thoughts on the matter here.

Sometimes I feel like the coining of new terms and microlabels is more about wanting to be the originator of something and getting praise for it than about needing a simple way to express your identity.

I think I have the documents for Project Shift backed up as I intended to revive the site on my own domain (sonverrid.org) should it have happened to go down. So yeah, I might bring it back at some point, though I don't know when since I'm working full time now. At least it would take that responsibility off Aethyriek's shoulders.
Anyone know what happened to Project Shift and the Werelibrary? Both sites are coming up as suspended when I try to visit them.

Yeah I don't consider my phantom ears a shift since they are so constant and have been for most of my life.
fun little question for therian tumblr
Any of y'all have shifts that just, never go away? My phantom ears and tail never go away, unless I'm having a shift for one of my other theriotypes since they usually don't blend together. Them phantom ears and tail be going HARD all the time. Paws are also a near constant.

Angel energy with those thousands of eyes around it :P
Small, shelled, and unassuming, chitons have eyes unlike any other creature in the animal kingdom. Some of these marine mollusks have thousands of bulbous little peepers embedded in their segmented shells, all with lenses made of a mineral called aragonite. Although tiny and primitive, these sensory organs called ocelli are thought to be capable of true vision, distinguishing shapes as well as light.

So torn: inhuman eye color would be great but it would become mundane to me quickly; wings, fangs, & tail would be inconvenient in a human life for me (unless the fangs were retractable); retractable claws could be good; cats ears I would really like but I already have constant phantom cat ears, I just can't see them (and I think I would be weirded out by my appearance with my hair tied back & having cat ears instead of human ones); & gills would be wonderful as long as I could live on land extensively without a problem, & I would be able to finally swim & not fear drowning.
So with that I've decided on gills, despite me not having a 'kintype with gills, I've always been drawn to humans/humanoids with gills. Retractable fangs are a close second. If the gills would be a problem on land I'd go with fangs instead.
I put way too much thought into this.
You can choose *One* of these mildly non-human traits to have.

Though also, having pride in being a zoophile is concerning. I can understand that zoophiles have an attraction they can't control but they can control if they act out in pride of it even if they aren't bestialists.
Tumblr media
Zoo’s are using this flag to group zoophiles and therians together, DO NOT use this flag. Real therians WILL NEVER support zoophiles

For therians researching their identity! (and anyone looking up animals.)
There is a site, animalia.bio, that lets you not only check out animals you already know names of, but also search by habitat, genus etc.
It lists behavior, appearence, biomes in which the animal lives, shows distribution, climate zones and even lists characteristic traits (which you can click and find even more animals!!) like if the animal is nocturnal, nomadic, a predator, territorial, social or a migrant. You can also find diet, lifestyle habits and mating habits information.
Hope this'll help someone

Nice study, though it sucks it's behind a pay-wall :/.
Therian Study Alert
The Jackal in the City: An Empirical Phenomenological Study of Embodied Experience Among Therians and Otherkin
The result of FurScience's interviews and focus groups with therians at Anthrocon since 2016 is finally out. Tens, possibly hundreds of therians were interviewed one-on-one in close to hour-long sessions, their responses recorded, transcribed, and later analyzed anonymously. The study was published in The Humanistic Psychologist and is 20 pages long, detailing the experiences of therians and otherkin, along with associated analyses and a suggested re-terming of what we call "mental shifts," at least in the context of psychology.
While most therians will already be familiar with the what this study will reveal, I'd consider this the closest thing to a "therapist's guide" to therianthropy/otherkin that currently exists. It's accessible for $20 through the APA website linked above. For those who would not like to pay for it, I will summarize below:
The study analyzes the experiences of many therians and otherkin and seeks to "destigmatize and depathologize" our experiences. They provide well-structured examples of what we experience, as well as its psychosocial connotations starting from early childhood and into adult life.
They define a therian as "an individual who believes that they are not human—or at least not completely human. Instead, they identify as a species of non-human animal that either currently exists or has existed and is now extinct," and an otherkin as a person identifying "as a nonhuman being that is typically considered mythical or fantasy-based (e.g., fairy, elf, unicorn)."
They apply Sara Ahmed's work on the ideas of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation to alterhumanity. They dive into our preference for natural environments over manmade ones, our disconnect from other humans and our own bodies, species dysphoria (which they describe but do not explicitly name), and reorientation by means of our own personal image, shifting, seeking out community, and "ontological doubling" - "living [a] human life with its human demands, alongside a pervasive feeling of being out of place."
They suggest the "re-terming" of what we call "mental shifts" and "phantom shifts" and the like as embodied shifts instead, seeing as they involve more than just a shift in consciousness and can include physical sensations (such as phantom limbs) and can occur in response to the environment, by one's own volition, or spontaneously. While some may be against outside individuals coining terms for us, these are professional psychologists and this likely has more to do with their own understanding of us. Per the study:
"Therianthropy and otherkinship are often experienced as an attunement and orientation toward, and a belonging with, nonhuman animals and to the natural world. In connection with their environment, therians and otherkin experience profound changes in which they are less likely to be mindful of their humanness; instead they experience heightened sensations (especially those sensations that are sharp for their theriotype/kintype), increased spatial awareness, phantom limbs (feeling limbs and body parts belonging to their theriotype/kintype), and personality changes (e.g., from passivity to aggressiveness or assertiveness, from anxiety to calmness, introversion to extraversion, etc.). These changes were conceptualized as mental shifts by Grivell et al. (2014), but due to how this experience involves not just a shift in thoughts and emotion, but in the body and their relationship to their environment and to others, we here use the term embodied shifts. By conceptualizing shifting as an embodied experience, we reaffirm that affective [for the uninitiated, "affect" in psychology regards one's physical expression of emotions - gestures, postures, vocalizations, etc.] and behavioral changes, alongside altered states of consciousness, are not experiences located within the individual, but take place in the intersubjective field (e.g., as a reaction to changes in the environment, feeling threatened at work, or experiencing comfort in isolated spaces or with groups of accepting people). Although these experiences can be orienting in terms of the therian’s or otherkin’s experiences of self, allowing them to become reoriented to their environment or situation, it can also be disorienting for them and their social interlocutors."
The conclusion to the paper encourages professionals (therapists and such) to understand us through a lens of cultural humility and provides some hope in that "(perhaps ironically) humanistic psychotherapy..." can provide therians and otherkin some sense of wellbeing.
Overall, this is really good for us. If you are in therapy, do consider forwarding this study to your therapist.

This is a tribute to Peter Benchley, not the movie Jaws (1975)
The author of 'Jaws' dedicated the rest of his life to reversing the unexpected negative impact his book had on the image of sharks.
Not only were sharks supposedly killed to create props for the movie, but 'Jaws' ended up awakening a bloody sea of ignorance in people at the time, who, haunted by an irrational fear and lack of understanding about marine predators, felt motivated to take to their boats and kill thousands of great white sharks in the most feared ways.
Such as the promotion of great white shark hunting championships that targeted the biggest ones, which were mostly pregnant females who, after being displayed as a trophy, had their jaws ripped off and their bodies discarded in the garbage.
Fear spread widely to all shark species, creating a lack of sensitivity that made it convenient to exterminate entire shark populations around the world that for a long time remained invisible to people's perception.
And this has continued to resonate for a long time with the entertainment media perpetuating the portrayal of sharks as monsters, newspapers favoring sensationalism about shark incidents, governments promoting shark culls, the advance of the unregulated predatory fishing industry, scientists not being supported in their studies of marine predators, the destruction of their natural habitats and the pollution of the oceans.
For thousands of years, sharks have taken care of the health of our oceans, older than the dinosaurs or the first trees, they have gone through great mass extinctions, they have been worshipped and respected as gods and guardians by oceanic peoples and now we demonize them in our media and exterminate them by the millions every year, who is the real monster?
We are shark-eaters.
I hope you can also hear what Peter Benchley himself had to say about all this:
I finally finished this artwork! Hope you like it. At some point I will adapt it for my little Redbubble store.🛍️
I reduced the quality to try to prevent them from stealing. I hope it's enough! 🙁
