i also HATE the 'twists'. the creepy man in the basement is actually a nice guy, the older man who invited her into his hotel room alone actually just wants to write an article, the highschool boys she meets at night actually just wanna play chess. it's intentionally framed as 'you thought!', even showing beth having similar thoughts at what's going to happen/uneasiness. since it's men who wrote the show, it feels almost like a mocking of our fears and experiences. they just don't understand that fear and caution. like, actually sickening stomach drop when she walked into that basement and there was the old janitor, and ominous music played.
How strange it's for males to question whether the world would "progress" without them and to believe that they could survive without women, when they literally only had the time to study and work because a woman carried the rest.
They wouldn't exist without their mother, who provided them with food, their sister, their wife, and all the other women relatives who carried out household chores while the males did nothing.
the fact that for most of history, women were forced to stay home and take care of everything so their husbands could go out and participate in intellectual pursuits, with any ideas she had being immediately dismissed (and then secretly stolen, if they were good) makes it impossible for me to listen to any discussion about the genius of X Y & Z famous influential male philosopher, writer, scientist, etc from decades and centuries past without being filled with rage, especially when you can’t even bring this fact up without being branded as a crazy feminist with a screw loose who can’t shut up about the silly little side topic of women’s oppression even though that silly little side topic is literally relevant to almost every single thing you could possibly talk about because it is the history of 50% of all the people who have ever lived!!!!!!!!!
