Girl Slaves of Morgana Le Fey (1971) is more than meets the eye!
Tumblr media
🫦Mildly Erotic Eurotrash or film about life and death?💀
Tumblr media
🧛‍♀️Yes the atmosphere is similar to Lesbian vampire films but the Dwarf is not Renfield from Dracula he’s from King Arthur’s Court.
Tumblr media
🧚‍♀️Queen of Fairy is well known in Scotland (and even in the Scottish witch trials). This film resembles the great film Devil’s Widow (1970) with Ava Gardner - that is based on the Tam Lin, famous legend of the queen of fairy. 🇫🇷 has similar tales such as The Story of the Queen of the Flowery Isles - La Reine de l'isle des fleurs.
Tumblr media
🛶Of course the oldest story behind this film is about Morgan le Fay, fairy enchantress of Arthurian legend and romance & Avalon, an island (with the boat) to which Britain’s legendary king Arthur was conveyed for the healing of his wounds after his final battle. It is first mentioned in Historia regum Britanniae (c. 1136). The island of ruled by the enchantress Morgan le Fay and her eight sisters, all of them skilled in the healing arts.
Tumblr media
🎥 Morgan offers immortality and beauty; if the offer is not accepted, a life of abjection among a group of older women (crone) is the victim's lot. However the invitation is appealing.
Tumblr media
🪦Immortality appears within psychoanalysis: for an uncanny excess of life, an ‘undead’ urge that persists beyond the (biological) cycle of life and death, generation and corruption.
🦄Oblivion 🍪, in a fairytale can be like the unlimited satisfaction of needs. Often, however, the hero finds his way back cleverly, or with the help of others. (Bettelheim 1987.) So here too. But when fantasy covers up a trauma, e.g. the loss of a mother, it can be like an attempt to keep parts of the mother alive forever.
Tumblr media
🛋️Freud equates the death drive with the ‘so-called ‘compulsion-to-repeat’ an uncanny urge to repeat painful past experiences that seems to outgrow the natural limitations of the organism affected by it and to persist even beyond the organism’s death. (Žižek 2006, 62-63).

The Medium: ร่างทรง Rang Song, 2021 is a Thai-South Korean mockumentary
Tumblr media
✂️All in all, the movie was quite a mess, more than half of it could have been edited out.
Tumblr media
🇹🇭Interesting elements were the references to local deities and the exorcism of spirits, which eventually included more authentic Thai elements.
Tumblr media
🤮Unfortunately, before that, they were sprained by copying Western films. Originally, The Medium was scripted as a Korean flick about shamanism in South Korea. Further confusion was created by the ever-changing reason for the possession. The scary becomes unintentionally comic when everything is shown.
Tumblr media
👺Good acting and scenes were drowned in a clumsy script.
Tumblr media
🛕 Buddhism is the official religion of Thailand but other forms of spirit and other beliefs are found and are recognized as complementary to Buddhism. These beliefs range from spirit lords associated with places such as villages, mountains, or forests to spirits such as phii that can affect and afflict individuals.
Tumblr media
🏺One of the authentic Thai elements was when “the phii” was ritually trapped in the pot, and then covered. Shaman/monk/exorcist will then carry away and bury the pot at what he considers to be a suitable distance from the sick man and his village.
Tumblr media
🗡️Also symbolic stabbing in the head seems to be part ‘to expel an evil spirit’ in Thailand.
Tumblr media
🐍Phii (spirits) are believed to have dualistic characteristics they can help or harm and be placated by gifts, and they may also have temperaments such as jealousy.

⭐️Great News to my friends Of Fantasy Films & The Fox Demon Hulijing⭐️
Tumblr media
In my journey to China I stopped in Hong Kong and watched The Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (封神第一部:朝歌风云)
Tumblr media
The Film is directed by Wuershan
📚It is the first film in the Creation of the Gods trilogy, adapted from the 16th-century fantasy novel Investiture of the Gods written by the Ming dynasty author Xu Zhonglin.
Tumblr media
I was a bit scared to go because lately I have been so disappointed to all the computer tricks and thin storylines such as the House of the Dragon💩 This was made with big 💰and the story is great!
Tumblr media
Without any spoilers (🚨beware Of any trailers also that what I have liked) Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
🫀If you have followed me earlier you might know that I post about the witches, femme fatales, folklore, art and history from the psychological perspective or actually psychoanalysis. In this film such a character is the Fox demon. In Korea it is called Gumiho, in Japan Kitsune.
🎥In Chinese screen Hulijing has been seen for example in Painted Skin (Chinese: 畫皮) 2008. Typically fox spirits were seen as dangerous, but some of the stories are love stories between human & demon, like that one.
🦊Belief in fox spirits Is still alive & well in some areas of Asia. From the psychoanalytical view these castration fantasies are really interesting. However in China Demons are part of nature, even where there is no fox demon, no village can be established. It should be added that like in this movie the evil is in men and the human desire is the key point, Fox is just answering to that. Connection to witch believes is that this succubus-like character steals the male energy, can cause impotence or kills men (eats their hearts). A lot like in the witch lore & demonology.
Tumblr media
A young fox can appear as a young woman. An older one can take either form. The millennial fox becomes a celestial being. 💫

Italian witch trials
Triora is a small village located in the region of Liguria in Italy, the town is known as the “Italian Salem” because of the famous Witch’s trial occurred there in the 16th century. It was 1587 when after two years of famine the village leaders and the elder’s council decided that such a tragedy was the result of the evil doing of a bunch of local women, all accused of mingling with the devil. The accused women were mainly prostitutes or poor women emarginated in the Cabotina, a district populated by meager people located outside the town walls. Nobody complained when a bunch of wretched women without a penny were accused of witchcraft, but things quickly changed when the accusations spread like oil and invested the wealthier women of Triora’s society.
Genoa sent over to Triora Giulio Scribani, a former local magistrate, nominated special commissioner for the case. Scribani sent thirteen women to the prison of Genoa and raged throughout the area opening new cases and causing innocent women to die. Genoa, the Inquisition, and the Church itself tried to intervene and to stop the trials but Scribani went ahead; in Triora and neighboring villages such as Andagna, Bajardo, and Montalto Ligure the deaths of many innocent people were recorded. In 1589 after two years of persecutions the trials were closed by the Inquisition, little is known about what happened to the women that were sent to Genoa, but dozens were the women imprisoned, and those who did not burn to death, died from the torture they endured. Historians agree in saying that the reasons behind the accusations, were possibly that local landowners wanted to rise food prices to increase their income causing people to become unable to buy food to sustain themselves and their families. Blaming the death of hunger-stricken people on witchcraft was a perfect way out.
Today the town honor the memory of the events with a museum dedicated to the witch hunt, trials and witchcraft, but the geographic area is still connected with its mysterious and magical past.
The heraldry symbol of the town is Cerberus, the infernal hound, the name Triora in fact comes from the Latin Tria Ora which means three mouths. Triora’s main church, the Collegiata it’s believed to be constructed on a previous pagan temple, a Fanum. Evidence of earlier pagan cults is also represented by an ancient menhir situated in the Mezzaluna Pass. But the area is full of places considered witching spots, natural spaces where it’s believed that withes organized their sabbaths, like the lake Lagodégnu, the field Ciàn der Préve, the fountain Campomavùe and the nearby walnut tree. These places, with the ancient Cabotina, can still be visited today and recall to the primeval traditions of Italian witchcraft. The village also organizes an annual festival dedicated to witchcraft and paganism.

ITALY became a nation-state in the 19th century.Perhaps the most striking aspect of it’s witchcraft trials is that their bloodiest phase occurred in the Renaissance. Only 5 complete archives of the original 45 provincial tribunals in Italy proper have survived intact. (Herzig 2013.)
Tumblr media
🇮🇹From the late fourteenth until the mid-fifteenth century, witchcraft scares ending with capital punishment broke out in Milan in 1385 and 1390, and in 1457 and 1472, And in 1515 and 1519.
Tumblr media
As well as in the region of Como in 1456, 1460–82, 1487, and in 1512–17 and 1519–22.
Tumblr media
🏔️Witch trials in Como had begun in the 1480s, with the burning of perhaps as many as forty-one witches. Prosecutions were renewed three decades later. The records of their proceedings were burned in 1782, when Emperor Joseph II suspended the inquisitorial tribunal in Como. One sixteenth-century chronicler describes the burning of three hundred women in Como in 1514.
Tumblr media
The discrepancies among the sources are too great to arrive at any consensus, and estimates of the number of executions, range from about thirty to several hundreds.
Tumblr media
Carlo Ginzburg's theory helped to understand the shamanistic roots of witchcraft beliefs. In addition, he shed light on how the theories of the elite filtered the narratives of the people and transformed them into Sabbath beliefs.
Tumblr media
According Duni (2021) there were 650-750 executions in All Italy region  -trials, between the 14th-18th centuries. Total number of trials was estimated to be 22000-33000.
Tumblr media
😇In Milano & Como Cardinal Borromeo was directly involved with 7 of executions and indirectly in 64-100 cases.
🔥In 1569, the more moderate cardinal-inquisitors had the upper hand, when the Congregation refused to confirm the death sentences of seven women from Lecco who had confessed to participating in the witches’ sabbath and causing the death of children. One of the accused died as a result of her incarceration, but the Congregation prevented the execution of six others, notwithstanding pressure from Borromeo (1538–1584), archbishop of Milan, who wished to secure their death. ☠️
Tumblr media
🛐St Borromeo (1538-84) was one of very few saints with the responsibility for holding a significant number of witchcraft trials. He was as relentless in his determination to punish anything related to magic and superstition as he was against Protestants.⛪️
Tumblr media
In the Ancient Rome the other two types were: erotic curse tablets & circus curse tablets - for chariot races & gladiators.
”It was also rather normal for prostitutes to be practitioners of magic themselves. Their livelihood depended on their capacity to retain clients at all costs.” (Moretti 2019)
Tumblr media
The Judical curse was seen in the Devil’s Advocate. Santeria priest binds the prosecutor’s fluent speach by using cow’s tongue and nails.
This long tradition of folk beliefs was more common in Italian witch trials also in the Early-Modern era - Sabbatical beliefs were more rare - usually the accused was on trial for the crime of heresy. Devil was more uncommon than other older gods in the court records.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974)
Tumblr media
👩‍🦳The focus of the film is a young woman who is traumatized by the death of her parents.
Tumblr media
⛲️The film location Quartiere Coppedè area’s unusual and whimsical appearance has inspired several movies, such as “Inferno” and “The perfume of the lady in black” More recently, House of Gucci with Lady Gaga. The film progresses slowly, but you can admire its colors and staging.
Tumblr media
🎨“On the The Perfume of the Lady in Black DVD special feature Barilli admits that the idea for the film came from one of his paintings of the titular lady in black, seated with her back against the viewer, a painting seen in the film and which cuts the subject as a sad, lonely figure, a theme which is also established across many of the key characters.”1
Tumblr media
After the clairvoyant session, more and more real memories start to come to her mind.
Tumblr media
🛖“Francesco Barilli: Well, first of all the basic idea for the film came when I was in Africa, watching a black magic ceremony in Belgian Congo. My mother-in-law passed away during the shooting, then the old man who played the concierge in the film died, too. Well, better not to mess up with black magic…”2
Tumblr media
The plot shouldn't be revealed too much, but not everything is as it seems.
Tumblr media
🐦‍⬛“FB:Look at Hitchcock’s films! I think every director should keep him in mind when making a giallo. I don’t mean to copy him, De Palma-style: you have to study the way he builds up every scene, every single shot, the way he dresses actors and makes them move…”2
Tumblr media
🍖“Francesco Barilli: Well, I really loved Polanski films, especially Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby. Anyway, The Perfume of the Lady in Black was born in quite a unique way, because, you see, there were these two scripts I’d written: one was the story of a schizophrenic woman, while the other was about a cannibal sect in Geneva…”2
Tumblr media
An interesting trip down the rabbit hole⭐️⭐️⭐️

📝The BWP causes us to interrogate our assumptions around the relationship of Truth to narrative and to scientific methodology. It borrows from histories and myths that are already half known. The audience is not given a story, it is given evidence, and out of that evidence the audience itself makes the narrative; the facts seem to speak for themselves. (1)
Tumblr media
🪞Foucault uses the term "heterotopia" to describe spaces that have more layers of meaning or relationships to other places than immediately meet the eye.The students occupy a real standpoint in the Black Hill Forest, but like the case of the mirror, they cannot pass through the virtual point and detect the witch. There is a connection between the witch as the monstrous-feminine and the woods as the regenerative womb. (2)
Tumblr media
🏚️If masochism is the dominant perversion here, the audience shares the fearful yet pleasurable passivity and helplessness of Mike, Heather and Josh as their debasement is performed before us. (3)
Tumblr media
⚫️The Blair Witch Project uses and manipulates public history continually and cleverly throughout. The history that a community develops, not through a conscious, adult study of academic history, but through exposure to films, television, primary-school history lessons, popular literature and folklore. But instead of comforting the public through a celebration of shared myths of the past, the project produces unease, like a dark-mirror image, a doppelgänger. It redirects the historical imagination to less comfortable ends. (1)
Tumblr media
📹The source of horror actually conceals itself from the characters via their own technological dependency, an effect amplified in the final scene inside the house.(3)

On a rainy day, it's nice to remember where I went on August 7-11, 22. Along the way, there were several objects that interested those interested in the history of witchcraft.
Tumblr media
Paisley is a small town near Glasgow, known for the so-called The case of the Bargarran Witches.
Tumblr media
Helen Duncan, the last person to be sentenced for witchcraft, was born in Callader. She was accused in an espionage case, where it was assumed that she was somehow involved in the sinking of a British warship with her clairvoyant abilities.
Tumblr media
Bessie Stevenson was sentenced to death in Stirling in the 17th century for performing magic by washing clothes at St. Ninian's Spring. Probably older folklore believes was behind Bessie’s magic than this Christian saint (Ninian). She used magic in her healing more than any herbs. Stevenson was executed outside the city and her body was probably burned at the sight.
Tumblr media
King James VI was born in Stirling Castle, whose mother was Mary Queen of Scots. James later became famous for the great witch persecutions in Scotland. He influenced both Edinburgh and Glasgow witch hunts. There was a peculiar case in Glasgow where a woman was thought to recognize witches by their eyes. James was also excited about this. It is known as The Great Witch of Balwearie -case.
