MXTX really said: if you write a villian who has suffered abuse and trauma but also does cruel and evil things, the audience is going to divide into people who either say his trauma means his actions were 100% justified or people who say he deserved his trauma because of his later evil actions. When the truth is the villian is both a traumatised victim and guilty of their very evil crimes in equal measure. In fact I'm giving you a specific example so you understand what I'm talking about

Xue Yang does the third person reference when speaking to Wen Ruohan, a very high ranking cultivator, and a very insightful statement about the meaning and transitional nature of life that Netflix subs simply translated as 'i'm not afraid of death only boredom [YOLO i guess?]'

i don't know much about his other lines in Chinese but i've noticed he tends to exaggerate expressions of respect and hierarchy ['i'm only a tiny little cultivator', 'senior Wei', etc] usually downplaying himself for mocking purposes. i wonder if the conotations are the same in the original lines...
all right guys, letās have a conversation about linguistic register, Lan Wangji, and I guess Wei Wuxian can come too
(and I do genuinely mean conversation, Iād love to hear other peopleās input on this, because I did just write a long-ass post about the subjectivity of interpretation in translations)
So when I started interacting with the fandom and reading peopleās fics, I got really confused by the way some folks were writing dialogue for Lan Wangji; he often sounded super awkward, spoke in fragments, and sometimes exclusively in third person. To be fair, all of thoseĀ are elements of his speech at various times, but like, seeing it in English-language material felt like a really heavy-handed way of rendering it in translation?
I guess when you use third person within the first three episodes of the show, it makes a pretty big impression on the audience
This is not at all intended to be a criticism of people who are 1000% writing and creating wonderful work, which is more than I can say for myself, but I want to poke and prod and tease at some linguistic nuance here.
Take a deep breath, grab a pot of tea (thisāll take more than a cup), because weāre going to take the scenic route on this oneā

i have so many thoughts about Xue Yangās fucked up psychological development like, speaking from the POV of another highly traumatised person, iām no therapist or wtv
his mental age is all over the place, heās like 24h a day horny and seeing any chance of being brutally mauled as an opportunity to have messy kinky sex, flirting with anyone who wants to kill him. something happened that made him associate sex to violence in a 1 to 1 basis and iām afraid i know very well what.
he also associates violence to fun, and itās a bit uncanny bc the way he talks about murder and such, the expressions, the voice tone, if you exchanged the actor for a child and gave a context of those acts being just make-believe, it would look SO naturalā¦Ā he talks about crimes like a kid talks about his play. he might KNOW what he does is wrong and yadda yadda but it doesnt matter, he FEELS like a boy shoving sticks in the anthill and its just so SIMPLE and FUN for him!
i feel thereās this part of him that wants to reconnect with his lost childhood in the only way heās ever known, that is violence, especially involving mutilating the body. playing with toys or doing littlespace stuff would do nothing for him as it was never part of his childhood. he keeps reenacting his own trauma all the time, tho instead of fingers he decided he likes to remove eyes and tongues [what is a bit symbolic too: its about severing oneās communication with the world], and when he does that he gets that thrill of just playing aroundā¦
i firmly believe, tho, that he could benefit an AWFUL lot from doing more ātraditionalā age play with people he felt truly comfortable with in an environment he felt safe. to just have someone to play with him, teach him how to play in less bloody ways, encourage actual childish behaviour, even more aggressive childish behaviour like fake wrestling or hair pulling y'know?
heās emotionally challenged and very playful by nature, it wouldnāt be too hard to get him into littlespace and guide him towards safer ways of being a kid, to let him create a childhood experience where no one is brutally mutilated by ugly rich people, he just gets to pull someoneās hair, pinch or scratch them and then be tickled until curling into a little ballā¦

i imagine he would be VERY enthusiastic about being a little with the right caregiver, even if they were doing it in an intuitive way w/o knowing of ageplay, letās say in their canon setting
his ācaregiverā could just be cuddling with him and decide to do stuff to him one would do to a child like pinching his nose or cheeks, tickling, giving gentle kisses on the cheeks or foreheadā¦ heād be like 'lol wtfā but it would FEEL so good he wouldnāt resist
i can imagine it could turn even a bit addictive like. him purposefully seeking his bf/'caregiverā and demanding him to spend some time just being silly together away from the sight of everyone. absolutely NO sex, just play and care.

-he misbehaves a lot and enjoys being 'punishedā like getting tickled, getting a blanket thrown over him while heās on the bed [making him a bit disoriented and trying to dig his way out], if thereās a strong enough caregiver or a fierce corpse being held upside down by his ankles. itās all play, it doesnāt hurt or scare him
-YangYang is clingy af and if you try to leave before heās done with you he grabs you by the waist or climbs your shoulders so you canāt move š
-he finds it specially soothing being tucked in and put to sleep. to fall asleep knowing someone he trusts is aroundā¦š
-if he has space enough, he really likes to run. just run. he doesnāt like too much if you try to catch himāheās had enough of being persecuted for a lifetimeĀ
-he doesnāt like playing with toys too much. if you give him some heāll play a little and then just destroy them lol
-actually he LIKES toysā¦ but 'girlā toys? he likes to set up a fake table and invite people to 'dineā with him. he enjoys the whole process of tidying up his 'homeā and receiving visitors. heāll serve real food for him, and dirt for you. maybe bc he never had food or a home :āāā)
-i do believe thereās a chance heād enjoy pretending to be a girl sometimes during his play. not bc of any hidden desire or anything, just bcā¦ curiosity. its probably not something he could even think about experimenting bc of strict gender roles yadda yadda
