Yeah sure. I didn't mean that he wants to assert dominance or that he wants to make Langa his bitch. Quite the opposite. Like you mentioned he wants to share his "Paradise" with someone and wants to be free. I just highlighted that out of the two Eve would inherently be Adam's, she was made for him out of a part of him. Eve is not a servant or a little "bitch" but God expected her and made her tend to Adam's needs. Adam requested her, he was bored and lonely. Therefore, strictly speaking, she IS inferior to him, but she is very much his partner. Equal? Not so much, since there's ownership involved.

On religion. Since he is from a family of high status and lived overseas for a while, he was most likely very educated about the Bible and he must have liked the story because he chose that name, therefore to a certain degree he has to know the implications of it all and of course the story itself.

If you pay attention to how he skates, he doesn't really care about winning per se. He is way more preoccupied with what his partner makes him feel while they are skating. I think before he might have been really in love with skating, but it became like breathing and that was the time he needed a stimulus. This is why, as I see it, currently he is way more obsessed with what he's skating partner makes him feel and focused on them, rather than the love for skating itself. For Cherry, Joe, Miya and everyone else, winning is the main objective, but for Adam? No. Not anymore. He is over the competition part. He doesn't want rivalry he wants excitement and freedom and ecstasy. He doesn't want to defeat anyone, winning doesn't motivate him anymore. Winning is only natural. He needs Eve. Someone who can inspire him, tend to his needs, excite him. He wants to feel and share something with the person he is skating with. In that sense to me, it is much more about the skaters, but more than that, it is about what the skaters make Adam feel.

Something being romantic doesn't equal sexual and I think you used that term interchangeably. He does interpret his attraction to the skaters in a romantic way. I didn't say it had to necessarily be sexual, though it very well could be judging by his method of approaching an interest. By romantic, I literally mean romantic attraction. Yes. Adam and Eve were romantic partners in Paradise. Strictly speaking, they were instructed by God to procreate so they could have been sexual as well. Only the shame came after the apple like you said.

I am not sharing my interpretation so that you can drop what you think, I simply have a different way of looking at it and it is an agree-to-disagree topic.

Sk8 Analysis: Adam’s Search for “Eve”

I’m tired of seeing all the hate for Adam, so… here’s some more non-hating-Adam content in which I try to relieve some of the pressure of my latest obsession. This isn’t meant to be a justification of his behavior or anything, just my own thoughts and theories on his character.

To me, his driving force is his love for skating. I honestly believe that he loves skating more than anyone else does, and more than anything else: his speech when he’s starting the quarterfinals of the tournament seems to suggest that/be a bit of a “humble brag” when he says that he’s trying to figure out who loves skating the most… because pretty much everyone knows that he’s #1 and the likely champion. Then there’s also all the times when he’s put off work in order to skate or immediately gone to the course after returning from a trip. So when he’s skating, he wants to enjoy himself to the fullest, which means that he needs a real rival, someone for whom it is not a foregone conclusion that Adam will win if he goes all-out. Which is what he’s looking for in his search for “Eve.”

Adam and Eve - The Biblical Sense

I agree with several of these points, and all of this makes quite a lot of sense, but I also have my own thoughts and ideas on Ad*m as a villian. So prompted by your wonderful analysis I thought I'd jump into the conversation as well.

If you take his idea of searching for "Eve" literally, which the canon allows you easily to do. Due to his strict upbringing, he probably took religious studies or any type of education very seriously. Therefore, he knows every possible implication of the genesis of humanity and the first two beings. I would argue that Adam isn't looking for someone at the same level as he is at.

If you know the story well you may remember that there are two versions of the genesis story. In the first one, the first humans do not have a name at all and are created at the same time, from the same matters and equally.

"God created humankind in God's image and instructed them to multiply and to be stewards over everything else that God had made."

The second narrative, which is more well-known and generally accepted goes quite differently. In this version the two humans are named Adam and Eve, therefore we can fairly safely assume that this is the genesis story our villain got his main idea from.

"God fashions Adam from dust and places him in the Garden of Eden. Subsequently, Eve is created from one of Adam's ribs to be his companion."

In this, Adam and Eve are not equals. God created Eve for Adam so she can serve him. Eve was a part of Adam that God ripped out. Adam cannot be whole without his Eve, considering she was made from him. If she isn't around Adam is missing a piece. Eve, however, also cannot be without Adam. She is on a basic level inferior to him, an extension of him, made from part of him, but certainly not an equal. God expects her to be subservient. He made her for Adam, to tend to his needs. The reason? Adam was bored. Just like Ainosuke. As he got better and better like you stated, getting to a level of skating superior to everyone around him, he gradually became more and more aggressive, and just bored out of his mind. He must have gotten the Eve idea around here. He felt like something was missing, he just simply wasn't stimulated anymore, he wasn't pushed to his limit. What did God do when Adam got bored with what he gave him? That's right, God gave Adam an Eve. Since he feels like there is a part of him that no one could reach, he is looking for someone who was made out of the same matter as he was.

However, he isn't looking for someone who is on the same level, or a rival. No. If he wholeheartedly believes he has an "Eve" in the biblical sense, his companion is inherently inferior to him. In this case, he isn't looking for a rival, he doesn't want to beef with his "Eve". He mentioned in the show that wants to take her to "Paradise". He wants to be whole again. He wants to achieve harmony. All he's looking for is the stimulus that God gave him. He wants to own his 'Eve". He wants her to be by his side, to accompany him to paradise.

This isn't about loving skating anymore. It may have been in the past, he may have felt genuine emotion when he skated, but whatever happened snapped his mind in half. Now, to him, skating is life. Skating is breathing. He physically cannot get any better. He is bored, and when Langa arrives he feels like God finally gave him a skater who can make him whole. His "Eve", that was made for him to toy around. The one who was made from a missing part of him. His personal trophy. The way he approaches Langa makes this abundantly clear. He wants to play with him, he wants to be entertained. He wants ecstasy, not competition. Skating is about fun to him.

I believe he is incapable of feeling traditional romantic attraction or any normal human emotion as we do. However, to him, this upside-down way of love is taken IS the romantic sense. When he speaks to his colleagues, they ask him about marriage, something clearly not platonic. What does he say? That he is going on a date. While it is absolutely impossible that he is truly in love with anyone out of the people he skated with, he does perceive his emotions towards them as romantic interest.

This is the fucked up part, and the reason many people have a problem with Adam as a person. To him, this is romantic love, even if in reality, it isn't. The way I interpret it, his Eve is his subservient other, his stimulus, his entertainment, just like in the Bible. He needs her to feel alive, to not get bored, but Eve is someone who is, on a biological level incapable of defeating Adam, who can't go against him because she is inferior to him, but she is able to give him a run for his money.

If anything for Adam, this is about freedom, getting to paradise, letting go, but not specifically skating anymore. Like I said, skating is the tool, and through this tool, he is looking for an "Eve". A part of him, with a similar style of skating/love. When he saw the adrenaline and the excitement in Langa's eyes, he felt like he found his part that was missing and he can finally break out of boredom.

Sk8 The Infinity Board Primer (vers 2) the Tumblr Picture Version

So I did the board breakdown on twitter. Here’s the link to the thread in case you flat out don’t like the tumblr post for you. But I did everyone’s board in order of least to most complicated with a breakdown of hardware and style. If there’s a desire. This version is the plain text version for easier if screenshots dont work for your access.

I put my 1st board together & found pics so I’m going to do a quick breakdown by a beginner for beginners on the hardware specs of the #SK8THEINFINITY board setups for@MattShipmanVO @TheHowardWang @DamanMills @ImMrTransistor @DavidWald_VA @ChrisGuerreroVA @RyMcKeand’s characters

Ok so I’m really new to skateboarding - I did it a little bit in high school 15yrs ago and #SK8THEINFINITY got me back into it, bless so disclaimer - I am a noob and this is much for me to remind myself everything I’ve learned. And here we go.

Ok so a skateboard has a few basic parts. I’m gonna use my board prior to set up to illustrate. Feel free to refer back to it cuz I labeled everything :D

Wheels are the most self-explanatory. The deck is the board itself, what you stand on. Cross bolts are used to secure the trucks to the board, bearings are used to secure wheels to the trucks & you do all this w/a skate tool or regular garage tools. But it brings us to trucks.

Trucks are the part of the board that attach the wheels to the board. Trucks have multiple parts which allow for movement & control of the board itself(see pic) the axel is what the wheels spin on. The hangar encases the axel and when you grind, you grind on the hanger. The kingpin is what the hanger pivots on and the bushings determine how much give that turning has. The tightness of nuts and bearings changes how much resistance any given aspect mentioned - from the wheels to the kingpin to the trucks etc & determine amount of speed&stability.

Deck length and shape can affect this too. Longer boards tend to be for cruising or distance, short boards tend to be for tricks. A wider deck can provide more stability but be harder to flip etc. So that’s the basics. Now on to the fun part, who’s board is what :D

1st up we’ve got Reki’s( @MattShipmanVO) board fitting as he makes boards after all. His is the most traditional modern board, popsicle shape & standard size. The black on top is grip tape & given the patches, chances are he’s reapplied it himself after wear. There’s grind on the hanger&wear on the wheels but given the tricks he does that’s expected. There’s chipping on the nose & tail but he’s probably not heading towards razor tail(when the tail of a deck gets so worn it will literally cut you) cuz again Reki knows what he’s doing. It’s not anything specialized though. Smaller wheels for speed, harder wheels for impact, Reki’s board makes sense for Reki but, uh, it’s nothing spectacular.

Miya’s(@RyMcKeand)board! This is a penny board, so called cuz they’re “cheap” but they tend shorter & narrower & that’s what’s recommended for tricks which is Miya’s wheelhouse. Trucks can come in colors & his were originally orange but he’s done so much grinding the paint’s coming off. There’s significantly less chipping on the nose& tail & less wear to the wheels which makes sense considering that Miya trains inside & is trick focused rather than roaming like Reki.

His wheels are wider for more stability cuz speed probably isn’t his main focus Considering how many tricks use manuals - think about the start of the Love Hug right? That 1st part tipping back so the nose goes up, is literally the only tick I can do rn & it’s called a manual. It’s a fundamental & it makes sense that Miya’s is tail’s squared for more space.

NEXT the Old School Boys! So back in yon olden tymes folks would take the wheels off rollerskates & just hammered them to a piece of wood but that was 50 yrs ago. Modern skateboarding was created by surfers & couldnt cuz there were no waves & they made decks that felt like surfboards.

Shadow(@ChrisGuerreroVA) has the first old school deck & it’s pretty fucking cool. I was pinches fingers this close to getting an old school deck.Old school decks tend to be wider which is good for him cuz he’s a bigger guy.

His trucks are actually probably a little too big for the deck based on what I’ve been taught? Because if the wheels come outside the deck, when you do tricks or fall or anything, you’re gonna get wheelbite, which is when your wheels hit the board. His primary use is S skating tho so i doubt he cares. Interesting not a lot of wear on the board, the wheels or the trucks compared to Miya’s or Reki’s. Most of the strain is on the tail (remember what I said about manuals?). But really, for someone who prides himself on being a badass, our flower clown doesnt tear up his board too badly does he?

Joe(@ImMrTransistor) has our other old school board. The oldest, actually, very 80s. The font is even echoed in a brand you can buy at vans like right now. See the similarity? Pretty sure that’s intentional.

Joe’s board is so unbelievably JOE I literally can’t stand it. It’s sea-side #sk8 culture distilled into one object. The wheels are small for speed & while they’re fictionalized w/that texture which I’ve never seen IRL the sentiment of it being for terrain riding makes sense.(UPDATE: I’ve been informed they’re Shark Wheels which advertise as being designed for all-terrain riding but omg lol Joe with that water vibe tho). I also find this really interesting because old school hits this neat space between the economy of size provided by penny boards(tricks) & the ease of transportation provided long boards(cruising). It was the adaptation between #sk8 & surf boards and ya know?

Last of the traditional boards belongs to the man the myth the monster Adam(@DavidWald_VA)& oh boy. So long boards right? They look like this [the narrow at the tip, fat in the middle shape, click link to picture) cuz the goal is to get as much length as possible while still functioning like a normal. They’re also the most like surfboards practically.

Longboards are for cruising & carving(traveling & turning) and so if if you stop, for a moment, & really think about Adam’s behavior at S? His board makes absolute perfect sense. He doesn’t do flips. He rarely grinds unless he has to. Even the airdrop is one extended ride if you stop&think about it. Setting aside spikes, horns & EP9 OH MY GOD (btw: the bottom of his his board says Til Death Do Us Part jfc #SK8THEINFINITY just says “ABUSE CAN CREATE ABUSERS” RIGHT OUT LOUD doesn’t it?) w/all his opponents, Adam’s big moves involve straightaways & sharp turns which makes perfect sense for this board, which is based on surfing, a sport about riding straight and then making sharp carving turns. I’d guess he rides insanely loose trucks to be able to do what he does & you can see the wheel bite & strain(abuse) he puts on the deck.

Ok. Time for our weirdos. I just. 🙏 I want to be clear here before we do these next 2? I am a beginner. These are my BEST GUESSES because I just…@TheHowardWang @DamanMills What the actual fuck even is going on with Langa and Cherry Blossom’s boards!?

Easier one first. @TheHowardWang The Reki-Langa-Special-Rolling-Slider sure is a board huh? I spent literal hours staring at the RL2S trying to figure out WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK is happening there. I’m not kidding. This board is… so much.

This is an insanely EXPENSIVE board. We know it’s custom deck - shape wise, length wise, width wise so thats ¥. The foot hold is a thing that doesn’t really exist so there’s more ¥. The art more ¥.Then. The trucks. Look. In the dub @MattShipmanVO says “I’m cooking up miracles” & that translation is way closer to what I see than the sub translation of “make your board something else” cuz what Reki is that he “remodeled the wheels” but that’s not right. The wheels are the same. I think he did w/the RL2S is something else entirely. Look @ the nose trucks.

Reki made what is in essence a 2nd base for a 2nd kingpin position so the truck base can move independently of the deck.allowing the trucks itself to pivot independently of the wheels, likely by using risers(a piece of plastic you put between your trucks & your deck)to connect the pieces. Instead of 1 hinge? Now there’s 2 by adding that extra piece.

I’ve labeled everything in this picture so yall can see wtf i’m talking about.

That metal piece between the black pieces? That’s a 2nd minideck that gives extra control but level of skill that it would require to be able to move the kingpin in the truck separately from the kingpin in the 2nedary deck would have to be so comprehensive I literally can’t image it. Hence why Langa is an anime hero. But srsly Reki is a genius, that cant be understated.

Last but FAR from least @DamanMills Cherry Blossom’s board. I…don’t understand this board. In any way. It’s got the old school style like Joe&Shadow but it can become a longboard. BUT THERE’S NO TRUCKS. NONE. How does she TURN, Cherry?

I gotta figure there’s..idk some independent kingping-pivot-and-bushing-like structures at the hinge of each wheels? Or inside the black box that we cant see? But this is… not set up like a board. At all. It’s set up more like a cart. I look at Carla &turn into a fucking meme but that’s v Cherry so

I see some of you bringing up this legendary inverted Matcha Blossom. (Which relates nicely to my previous essay post of them literally being exact opposites. So read that if you want a deeper insight) One can’t exist without the other huh.

But have you all seen this?

Now if Matcha Blossom are fucking soulmates does that make Renga twin flames? Just look at it. Langa’s hair inverted is Reiki’s eye color, his eyes are Reiki’s hair color. Reiki’s hair inverted is Langa’s eye color and Reiki’s eye is literally Langa’s hair.

If this isn’t a metaphor for them being the perfect match and the best partner for each other see as though they literally make each other whole I don’t know what is.

Sk8: The Infinity - A Take on Love

Because my six unfinished assignments can wait until I throw this into the void, scream for five hours and after my voice gets hoarse, I resort to watching the beach episode on loop until next Saturday.

This was entirely sparked by the recap episode, which really pressed the reak havoc and theorize button in my brain. I am truly losing my grip on reality. Help. I apologize in advance, creatures of Tumblr.

I saw people mention here and there screaming that “we need canon relationships and they will get trust issues if a romance isn’t confirmed by the end of the series”. I think that mindset is harmful to have in this case. You can’t really avoid being disappointed if you get into the series expecting it to deliver on your wishes of gay romances. So, this might be controversial, but stay with me please. The anime and manga are both confirmed to be based primarily about the characters themselves and of course the sport -skating. I was hoping to take a closer look at what the series intends to do with certain dynamics and relationships according to yours truly. I also want explain my reasoning behind it not being queerbaiting, though it being inherently queer-coded, through the current lense of the canon.

Sk8: The Infinity is unquestionably a love story.

We need to state the genres this series is in, because some of us tend to forget. It is in fact not a shounen-ai, not a yaoi, not a romance, not even a josei. Say it with me it is a series in: COMEDY and SPORTS.

(Source is the official US Sk8 website.) The spotlight is udoubtedly on skating and what it means. Another important highlight of the show is how the definition of the sport relates to the characters, and how vastly different they are from what we expect. For example, when we see Shadow first, we pigeonhole him into this vulgar indecent rock and roll persona, only to find out later that he is actually a stweetheart at a flower shop. Joe is another very good case study. When we first see him we think of him as a womanizer muscle-head, later we find out he has a heart of gold and is very emotionally intelligent. We’re also quick to judge Miya as the cold, unfeeling prodigy then we discover how lonely and normal he is on the inside. And so on and so on.

The show continues to defy our expectations of what each character should be like. In a way it is about breaking the conventional stereotypical roles we subconsciously assign to certain looks. We see that even in anime, multifaceted characters can exist without distrupting or damaging the delicate dynamics of a traditional sports anime. We successfully established the second focal point of the series as disproving stereotypes and presenting strong, diverse and unexpected personalities.

How about the defition of skating? What does it mean in the context of Sk8: The Infinity then? Where does a love story come into the picture? Skating is repeatedly described as a ritual of love within the anime, an idea that our villian, Ad*m, is obessed with. In a sense skating is a language of love canonically.

Then skating itself is love. Throughout the series we see varied styles of skating therefore different ways of expressing love, affection. We get to experience several metaphorical ways of “being in love” through characters skating with each other. Each dynamic shows us a type of love. Healthy, disfunctional, outright abusive.

The way Reiki teaches Langa to skate can be interpreted as a direct metaphor for someone learning to love again after losing a person close to them. Langa’s father has died and Reiki literally brings him out of his shell again. It can also be interpreted as a queer kid’s experience of a world of romance that feels similar to his previous one, that being snowboarding, yet it still being new and different. Skateboarding. When due to Reiki Langa’s potential is discovered and his hunger for more and more develops, especially next to Ad*m, Reiki’s main frustration stems from them not being well-matched or on equal footing anymore. He feels like he cannot give Langa what he needs anymore. Which would obviously go againts the literal description of a healthy romance. Two people with mutual respect who both bring equal assets to the table. He feels like he needs to catch-up to be with Langa again. The only thing he doesn’t consider is Langa’s deep appreciation of him and the fact that literally he was the one who helped Langa experince the feeling of love again.

Kojiro and Kaoru’s relationships, to me, is very much representative of two people wanting to be in each other’s presence, but due to their different language of love, miscommunicating horribly. Them bantering and insulting each other is the only way they know what to do with the other. The only way they can ensure the other’s attention and eyes are on them. This has worked so far. They are literal opposites, but both have a very clear definition of their form of love. To Joe skating, or love itself, is about the feeling and going with the flow. Being spontaneous. Whereas for Cherry, every move needs to be calculated and executed perfectly in order to be “efficient”. Their frustration comes from both wanting different things from the other, but not communicating their need properly. Despite this, they stick together due to a magnetic pull they obviously feel towards the other. The attraction is there, the trust is there, they are even well-matched in skill as we see them neck-to-neck constantly. They could give each other what the other wants. Only if they could express themselves well... This is why Joe pushes Reiki towards reconciling with Langa. he wants them to not fall into the same trap of not stating their needs and thoughts properly.

Now Ad*m and Langa are obviously problematic and I don’t really want to have to explain, honestly guys. I really don’t (since I have trauma regarding this subject), but I need to go into this a little bit. This is a textbook toxic predatory relationship. Where the older, twisted, damaged person, has an obsession with a young, outstading child. He wants to lead him into “Paradise” and show his “Eve” what love is really about. (Ain’t that disgusting you guys...) His form of love is inflicting pain, so I really can’t imagine a scenario where he and his “Eve” live happily ever after and everything is fine and dandy. He needs someone who he can torture. He literally is looking for someone who can handle his way of expressing affection, his “love hug”, who has the same type of crazy eyes for adrenaline and danger. His Eve. In his distorted mind, this all makes sense and Langa is that someone he was looking for thoughout the years. The problem is, he disregards Langa’s side where the relationship becomes problematic.

Cherry and Ad*m during their younger years seems to be a very innocent infatuation on Kaoru’s end. It is a one-sided relationship where someone is in love with the idea of a person long gone. They were discovering the world of skating, or the world of love together with Ad*m taking the lead. Cherry immediately became infatuated with him, wanted to learn his love language, wanted to be at the same level he was. It probably started very innocent. At first, Ad*m being gentle, because that’s how Tadashi was with him too, then after whatever happened between those two, Ad*m, disappointed in the way of love, or skating, Tadashi showed him, returned to what his aunts taught him. Maybe after injuring Kaoru with the “love hug”, therefore eliminating him from being his potential partner, started looking for his “Eve”, gradually became more agressive in love as in skating. Kaoru was distraught and wanted the Ad*m he originally learned love from back. Holding out some hope even years after. Trained to get used to his “love hug”, to literally condition himself to be able to get close to him. Ad*m, however showed Cherry brutally that he truly cannot handle his way of love.

Ad*m and Tadashi. *sighs* As of this post, I don’t really have enough information to give you a good overview of what I see this relationship representing. As far as I can tell Ad*m was abused horribly and to ease the pain and make him forget, Tadashi showed his another way of expressing affection. Skating or love. Basically a first love gone horrible bad, scarring an already abused child and turning them into a monster. Tadashi himself reinstates this during one of the episodes. It was his fault that Ad*m turned out the way he did. Their love slowly became strongly abusive throughout the years. Tadashi is stuck in it because he feels like he deserves it. This is a metaphor for dangers of an emotionally and physically abusive relationship, where one person feels responsible and the other is using power. Tadashi’s guilt keeps him next to his master and he even endures abuse, now he is trying to break out and show Ad*m he messed up and I think this could potentially be a good representation of how difficult that process truly is.

As far as Reiki’s, Miya’s, Shadow’s skating goes. Their main arc relating to love is first and foremost learning to accept themselves and aprecciating their uniqe way and style of skating. Only after can they become people who can truly be accomplished in love/skating (in Miya’s case I’m obviously talking about platonic feelings). Each of them had a preconception of their persona in love/skating, which gets questioned heavily throughout the series. Miya gets defeated, Shadow’s soft side gets discovered, Reiki... well. I get sad. :c Even though he taught someone to love again, to appreciate life again, he ended up discovering how dissatisfied he truly is with himself... These three all need to learn to love every aspect of themselves to reach fulfillment and to really experience healthy human relationships.

Sk8: The Infinity is unquestionably a love story, without explicitly being a romance, meaning that it is a tale about love, both romantic, platonic and everything inbetween through a queer-coded lens, showing both dysfunctional, abusive and healthy relationships, ways to express emotions and even delves into self-love and the idea of nature versus nurture in the villian’s case.

That is why I, personally don’t scream for a canon couple. To me, the show gets its main point about affection and love across, without making any of these relationships explicitly stated. Not to mention that it does justice to both of its assigned genres. Comedy and Sports as well. Yeah sure, I wouldn’t complain, but I think these dynamics are more than satisfying to watch, and much deeper than bishounens wanting to bang each other, which is, in my opinion, inherently sexualized. If they want, yeah they can confirm, make it canon without forcing it to be a center storyline. Hell, I would even be happy about it. I would clap with all of us. BUT, as the series currently is, I really see it taking the other route because of the above. This way audiences who want a yaoi or ikemen going at it, won’t be disappointed with the series when they find doesn’t revolve around that, straight viewers will just find it flamboyant, and people who look for subtext and want to read between the lines will certainly do that with the amount of crumbs and hints the writers gave us.

We don’t need outright, written in black and white gay representation in Sk8 to experience very real types of love. The queer theme is secondary to me, just like queerness is, in most people’s lives. Yeah sure, it is a big thing, but not the only attribute a person has. My life doesn’t revolve around my queerness. I rarely talk about it. If I was a main character this would be a side-arc. Just like Sk8 doesn’t revolve around the characters coming out. It’s just them living their lives and possibly being queer while doing so. If you look at it this way, it is almost normalizing attraction between same-sex people by just showing it as regular love. If you can, why not interpret it this way, so it can be a liberating experience instead of a disappointing one.
