15th May 2013 is the 70 year anniversary of Somalia's first political party the Somali Youth League. It played a key role in the nation's quest for independence. Its aims included uniting all Somalis, giving children a modern education, and promoting the use of the Somali language by creating a indigenous alphabet.

Somali Airlines - The White Star Service
Founded in March 1964 as the flag carrier of Somalia, the White Star Service connected Mogadishu with Rome, Frankfurt, Doha, Cairo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, Djibouti and Nairobi.
With almost 800 employees, 51% of the company was initially owned by the national government while Alitalia owned 49%. The airline was then fully nationalised in 1977.
It ceased operations in 1991 following the outbreak of civil war.
