i'm so confused rn, can you explain the goncharov thing?? i get off tumblr for five minutes
Lmaoooo
Nah I getchu. So this post has been circulating for like a year:
Tumblr media
But yesterday, it had inspired someone to do this:
Tumblr media
Next thing I knew there were fake Letterboxed reviews.
Goncharov moodboards. Really good ones.
Tumblr media
Meta analysis. So many fake meta essays. Disturbingly good ones. And of course the memes.
As you can see, the myth just started to grow, characters and ships and tropes being added one after the other, almost bizzarely without contradiction, until there was enough of shape to the whole thing for people to start posting fanfic about it on AO3. "Ice-pick Joe" has already become a meme tag.
Tumblr media
It was hilarious in the beginning, but the way it's developed within less than a day, kind of like it's being willed into existence, is freaking me out a bit. We're toying with powers beyond our comprehension. 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
Of course, there could be an ulterior motive as well.

So like, Martian Manhunter is a telepath and he’s said several times in Justice League comics that he doesn’t like getting into Batman’s head because it’s really unpleasant in there, and I always kind of rolled my eyes because at the time it was said, Batman was in his toxic masculinity/I’m so edgy stage. I thought it was a cheap way of going “oooh look he’s so grim and dark and cool even telepaths can’t handle him”
But taken with the modern “Batman has PTSD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder” this suddenly makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE because if there is a way to get a telepath to go “um no thank you” to some mental shenanigans it would be someone with constant obsessive intrusive thought spirals and massive trauma.
Like Martian Manhunter hooking up a mental link between Justice League members trying to screen out how Batman’s brain is screaming at him for the entire 12 hour mission about how Nightwing hasn’t stopped by the cave to switch out his costume for the new improved kevlar weave so he has definitely already been killed by a rocket launcher and oh god what is Batman going to say at the funeral
so after the mission is over Martian Manhunter has like, a telepathic hangover and has to call Dick up on his Justice League reserve communicator going “I swear to god, if you don’t get your ass to Gotham to switch out your suit I will come down there, phase into your body and WALK YOU THERE MYSELF. Which incidentally, IS ALSO SOMETHING BATMAN WORRIES ABOUT” and then has to crawl into bed for 3 days

Because some people are evidently still obsessed with “critically consuming media” I would like to clarify that refusing to watch a movie or read a book or whatever and getting all your information about it secondhand is not equivalent to critical consumption because you are not doing the consumption part. Engaging with something “uncritically,” versus refusing to engage with it altogether... both of these positions are actually oppositional to critical thinking

No, I didn't forget about those WIPs, time just moves differently for me. For you, it's been years; for me, it's just been a few seconds, maybe a minute

Odysseus is such a powerful dividing factor in the Greek myth community because half of the people genuinely hate his guts and can’t stand him and the other half are like “ahahaha he’s the worst I love him so much”.

“I don’t know why all of my employees keep turning into supervillains! It’s like a curse!”
“I don’t know, bud, maybe it’s the fact that they’re constantly exposed to toxic waste, your company health insurance doesn’t cover therapy, and the pay doesn’t cover cost of living? Listen, the other corporations around here are unionized and they don’t have this problem.”

a favorite memory:
when i was in fifth grade, we read a book in school where a young girl in prehistory finds a dolphin skeleton. and i was so taken in by the description of the bones, how there were fingers in the fins, that i came home to my dad and told him “i think that when humans came out of the oceans, dolphins did, too, but they went back in.”
my dad went upstairs and came back with an issue of analog magazine, the sci-fi digest he read religiously, and handed it to me.
“here,” he said. “you’re ready for this.”

I will trust a thousand out-of-touch left-leaning southerners who don't know every piece of correct terminology before I trust one weird "feminist/LGBTQ+ ally" dude who couches his bigotry in pseudo-progressive language

Two identical infants lay in the cradle. “One you bore, the other is a Changeling. Choose wisely,” the Fae’s voice echoed from the shadows. “I’m taking both my children,” the mother said defiantly.

So “queer” isn’t just an identity that’s broadly inclusive because, I don’t know, we like big parties. There’s actually an underlying ethic, a queer theory, that has political implications.
Its name reclaims a slur because the point is to say, “I am different, but that’s not a bad thing.” The queer movement is about upholding the right of all people to deviate from an oppressive cisgender, heterosexual, patriarchal norm. Broadening the spectrum of acceptable diversity; questioning and dismantling the social pressures that police and punish deviance. Changing not just our own lives, but how our entire society thinks about sex and gender.
That’s why “queer” embraces so many different groups. It’s not trying to erase their differences, but to try to coherently understand the complex overlapping pressures that affect each of them, and to extend our reach beyond the LGBT+ community. It’s about the right of lesbians to live without men and the right of trans and nonbinary people to be who they are, the right of asexuals to define for themselves what’s significant in their lives, the right of straight men to be vulnerable and emotional and nonviolent. When the great queering project is done, you will see the changes everywhere, not just in small LGBT+ enclaves.
It’s recognizing that something that harms or oppresses one of us is pretty likely to harm all of us, so we all benefit from taking it down together.
