To Be Silent
The Witches Pyramid has four points: To Know, To Will, To Dare, To Be Silent.
Honestly, I think this is the most important point on the pyramid. It is also the one that is sorely the least adhered to.
To be silent is to keep your own counsel. It’s allowing the things you experience and connect with to hold a deep significance without allowing the opinions and feelings of others influence what you have experienced. There are a lot of people who have the sole purpose of naysaying, shaming, and trolling others. Trust me when I say this - it does matter, and it will effect your magic and workings.
This is the mystery of Mystery traditions - some things are oath bound, some things are private, some things are not meant to be spoken aloud. It is also minding your own business and not pressuring others to reveal what they are not comfortable doing.
To be silent is to respect that there are others who may work with you who do not wish their secrets and experiences shared with others. I have written at length before about the dissolution of covens and working groups - and the fact that your responsibility to hold the silence of others does not end with those broken bonds. There are experiences not meant to be shared. There are truths spoken in confidence when there is vulnerability - we have a responsibility to uphold that confidence. Even if your former coven mates are your bitter enemies, or jilted lovers, or dead - it doesn’t matter. The bond of silence is sacred, and permeates all we do. It protects us, grounds us, and nurtures us.
I have learned many lessons about silence in the past few years - this is now a point that is important and sacred to me.
To be silent is to honour your power.

when you cry to a person, they may not aid you. they might not even listen to you. they will do their best to comfort you, but they cannot understand what you want. that is love in a humanly capacity
when you cry to an ancient force, something beyond your earthly comprehension, you will feel their understanding surround you. you cry to hecate, you cry to isis, you know the arms of a celestial mother responsible for the very cradles of life as we know it.
just my two cents

Saint Muirgen (AKA St. Li Ban)
Tumblr media
Possibly one of the most underrated Saints of Ireland, Saint Muirgen is one of my favorite saints to work with.
Born to a wealthy Irish family in a small town St Li Ban grew up comfortably. She didn’t experience tragedy until her town flooded completely, killing everyone except for her. Trapped in an underground room of her families estate, Li Ban managed to survive an entire year of isolation before her first miracle occurred. St Li Ban became a mermaid. Spontaneously she had the tail of a salmon, and so she was free. She spent the next century haunting the loch that was once her town, visiting the buildings that had once belonged to her neighbors. It was not until a passing assistant to a Roman saint saw her, and bade her to come ashore, that she interacted with the living. Upon arrival she was converted to Christianity and baptized, which imediatly killed her. The magic that had once kept her immortal had broken and she rose up to Heaven. God saw her, and saw the isolation and pain she had experienced, and so he sanctified her. No relics remain of her, and her veneration is not widespread, but she is a caring Saint who will always protect a lonely traveler, or part the mists that can fog our paths.
For Muirgen I lay her altar up in blues and greens. Her feast day is January 27, and on that day I will bake Irish sweets and stews for her to thank her for all she has done for me and my clients.

unto you I sing, foremothers
unto you I sing, foremothers,
a song of praise and gratitude:
those whose suffering allowed me to exist,
those whose love gave me life.
(those who had to live in silence, longing swallowed by obedience,
tender hands weaving away their loneliness and fear;
and those who rejoiced by the hearth, who filled their houses with motherly hope,
their aching back and voices carrying lullabies)
(those who had to endure sleepless nights and bloodied thighs,
survive shame and pain, hunger and cold, banished and forgotten;
and those who fought, who screamed and cut,
those who were victorious and those who lost)
grandmothers, and mothers, and sisters,
those whose lives were long
and those who died younger than I am now:
may your wisdom and unyielding light guide me through my life,
through joys and hardships, through love and through grief,
so that once my time comes
to let my body rest under the willows,
I know I left this world a better place
for all the daughters to come.

here’s to all of the people whose names have been lost to time. the unmarked graves, the forgotten memories, the writers of anonymous scribbles on the walls, the ordinary people who made great men great, the people who perhaps did not impact as many lives but who nonetheless made a difference. your stories may never be told, but despite all that, you too are history.

I am a simple person. All I want is to wear ugly knit sweaters and walk in the forest. Maybe touch some moss. Toss some pebbles into a stream. Wear some leaves in my hair. Carve runes into stumps. Commune with the spirits I sought out. Wake ancient and feral magic. Lose all contact with civilization. Forget human speech. Turn into a local legend. Every girl's dream.
