god, this is so real. As previously stated, art is a skill, a skill that we as artists are constantly learning. Improvement requires exposing yourself to different kinds of art and techniques. In fact, the development of a "style" is usually a synthesis of all the cool shit you've learned how to do .
Realistic figure drawing and portraiture has helped me get better at development of value, lighting on people, and anatomy. Studying animators helped me break down the body into triangles and heavily improved my anatomy and posing, where line of action and using circles for joints never helped me. Painting, particularly abstract painting , gives me more insight into color and shape. I took a whole ass class on design where we studied composition from the fucking Renaissance. I learned how to draw the fucking fibonacci sequence by hand! That single course made my composition better by miles. I can't even count the amount of digital painting process tutorials I've watched and studied. Only two days ago, by studing say0ranart's process did I find a method of doing digital art I like!
Don't be afraid to make shit art. To make a good piece, you have to make a thousand shit ones first. Take the shit that works and keep doing it, and take the crap that doesn't and find ways to improve it. You're never going to find those ways though if you keep yourself from using half your toolbox.
okay hey wait art suggestion time. stop locking yourself in to an art style. especially if you're anyone whos still in/under highschool. but even then stop fucking doing that.
theres nothing wrong with having a preferred style to draw in (clearly as a guy writing a multi book comic i know. trust that i know) but if you catch yourself thinking 'i cant draw that its not my style' or 'i want to learn to draw like that but its not my style' you gotta knock that shit off
you are not a brand. you are not a company. you are a person learning a skill and how the hell do you know what 'your style' is without trying to learn to draw in different ones? please do style studies. please try drawing realism even if it looks like shit at first. try doing abstract works. you dont have to like them but im begging you at least to try, because the things you learn carry over into your main body of work. and youll see yourself grow in ways you didnt think you could 'in your style'.

How much money do I have to pay to hear more about Imanishi
nothing at all! I will ramble for free! Imanishi is a student at shujin and a member of its newspaper club. Running the rumour mill is his favourite pastime. His element is psy, and his persona is koschei.
I shove all art, asks, and rambles about him in the ocimanishi tag. So check that out. If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to answer! :D
ALSO MayorMimi wrote a wonderful fic for him.

i read this fic. its good! i read the majority of it without looking at the tags tho, so for the longest time I was convinced the ship was Akechi x Sumire. I only figured it out that its shuake like 40 chapters in lol
have you read faith for the second run by senblades? I think you’d really enjoy it—interesting sumi and haru characterization, Goro growing and having confidantes… it’s good and well-written
I havent actually! ill add it to my to read list

you bring up a really interesting point! i was really curious about this, so i did some digging through the script on my crap phone and I found the line.
He says 「やっぱりアンチテーゼがなきゃ、アウフヘーベンは起こらない⋯」 which translates to something to the effect of "still, without antithesis, aufheben won't happen." He's literally using the loan words for both aufheben and antithesis, which is pretty cool! Kinda funny that he straight up doesn't mention hegel in the original Japanese.
I've heard the hegelian dialectical process being a "negation of the negation" before, but didn't really get what that meant. Thank you for your explanation! I've only read up on marxist dialectics , so its interesting to hear all this. From what I understand, it seems that hegelian dialectics focuses on unity, and a fusion of the contradiction (where like you said the contradiction coexists with itself albeit maybe changed). aufheben reminds me of an addition my fiance made about marxist dialectics that i included in a separate reblog of this post. Ill include it again here
Tumblr media
but yeah, thanks again for pointing out the stuff about the original Japanese script!
Thinking about Akechi and philosophy again. Particularly his mention/very superficial glaze over hegelian dialectics. It's really weird to me that some people seem to go "he misquoted hegel sjjsjsjsjkaks" and then give an explanation of dialectics that shows that... they don't fuckin understand dialectics fully themselves.
Which is understandable considering Hegel was an idealist and idealism tends to require some weird logic to understand. (Akechi seems to in canon reference a lot of idealists which is hhhh, so I depict him as a materialist out of spite) I also haven't fuckin read Hegel myself, so I can't perfectly explain hegelian dialectics. However, I can sure explain dialectical materialism to an extent cause i've done my homework there at least. And like having an understanding of dialectics in general is a key part to understanding that crap. So I look at this quote right
Tumblr media
this one? and im like well, in explaining dialectics he aint fuckin wrong. Now did Hegel explicitly state this? Idk, i don't feel like cracking open the 300 pager that is The Phenomenology of the Spirit right now. It's 1AM. And if he didn't, that is okay. Look, Karl Marx didn't fuckin explicitly explain dialectical materialism either. We still credit it to him though, since it is the method he designed and used. Also if you're wondering where thesis and antithesis comes from, it's from Kant. Kant is one of the many that influenced Hegel.
Moving on to the actual paraphrase. Again, Akechi ain't wrong. Contradiction exists in all things, and yes to advance you must resolve the contradiction. This is where people who bring up the "Akechi forgot the synthesis!" get kind of on my nerves because he didn't. One cannot have advancement(synthesis), without resolving the preexisting contradiction (thesis and antithesis). Hell! even if you ditch the idea of synthesis, he could still be right about dialectics, just not hegelian dialectics. Akechi uses the term advancement, which allows us to play with the possibility that maybe his approach to dialectics is through marxist dialectics. A synthesis, in the constant motion of the dialectic, would become another thesis with it's own antithesis and then fuse into another synthesis. The pattern continues. In dialectical materialism, we see that 1) multiple contradictions can exist simultaneously, and 2) That change occurs not by fusion of the thesis and antithesis, but when the intensity and opposition of the contradiction grows until it bursts into a new contradiction. Although, Akechi is talking about hegel to paraphrase the general concept of the dialectic, and could be purposefully using "advancement" instead of synthesis to highlight the constant motion of the dialectic, but maybe to obfuscate what kind of dialectical method he puts more stock in. Dialectical materialism can kind of be like dirty word in philosophical spheres because it is marxist. I doubt the writers for the game could get away with it either, considering the kind of ending message the game was given.
But also like I doubt the writers did a super deep dive into dialectics. And it would be kind of weird to have a game where there is literally an immaterial world based entirely on thought, start using a materialist dialectical method instead of an idealist one. Even then for a simple throwaway comment about dialectics, it is still accurate enough.
Anyways, I'm not a philosopher. I'm a sociologist and an artist. My fiance is the philosopher, and I fully expect them to correct my ass on some parts in the replies if they see this post.

Do you have any favorite fic writers or genres you like to read?
I don't have any particular fav writers, and this is because i have the bad habit of not checking out other stuff that the authors of my fav fics have written. I wanna rectify that.
as far as genres.... I'm a sucker for mystery, action, and adventure. I don't like reading dedicated ship fics, so a lot of what I read is gen or with the ship as a romantic subplot.
I think these are more tropes than genres, but I really like time travel fics, theyre so cool. The first thing I end up looking for whenever I join a new fandom. I also like to read for want of a nail type fics. Stuff that alters one aspect of canon, that makes it go into a whole AU. My guilty pleasure is Self Insert/SI-OC. I just like the whole concept of “I know exactly what is going to happen and I need to stop it before it does” and I think that is what attracts me to time travel and SI. also the whole secret keeping of that they're from the future/another world. I also heavily enjoy angst. I like it when the fics are there to emotionally gutpunch me.
